Got in the van with the dragon couple of weeks ago, no destination in the sat nav just drove. Ended up stopping at a campsite 5 minutes away. Glad we did great little traditional pub, great locals, a very very warm welcome considering I was wearing a cap and trainers 😂. Just goes to show in a positive way dont judge a book by the cover. Loved the pork pies hopefully back soon 👌 Jack and rachel

This is one of my favourite pubs ,as soon as you walk in ,it's like going back in a time warp . Stone flagged floor and old fire range . No sky tv or music , just people sat chatting and enjoying a drink . Food is a bit limited to pork pies , but very tasty, excellent cask beer but if your a lager drinker it's a bottle or nothing .

I've walked past this gem of a pub numerous times with the wife on hikes. Not quite sure how I've missed it for so long. Visited on Saturday night with a pal, what an absolute gem of a pub. A slice of English pub heritage preserved. The ale kept immaculately, the locals friendly and a very warm welcome from Andy & Cathy who are rightly proud of a terrific pub.

Fantastic old school pub ,no frills just good beer good atmosphere and good service. That's all you need.Oh and very dog friendly

Had the best time ever Cracking place!

One of the best little pubs I've ever visited. Good selection of local ales + the usual spirits and ciders, exceptionally friendly barman and locals. We were camping nearby and invited over for birthday cake. 10/10 pub will ensure that I return. Didn't see any food on offer apart from bar snacks, card reception is dodgy bring cash if you have it

A large group of us camping nearby popped into this place and were received warmly (literally in this case as a fire was lit for us in the second room). Lovely old world pub experience. No frills or pretension. Warning: the Black Death ale is well-named.

Great pub with with real ale , Nice atmosphere, Very old pub with two room lots of old pictures and photos . Has a real fire to sit be side of. We just had a drink we did not have the food. because we just wanted to have pint. Great old pub that's why give it 5 Stars.

Great landlord. Kindly cooked us a jacket potato and even crafter us a blue bracelet whilst we enjoyed our drinks. A truly unique experience!

Could not recommend more highly. Had an excellent afternoon in here chatting about knives and laughing our heads off. Will definitely come back!

A good selection of very well kept ales. Possibly the most traditional pubs in the UK. Please do visit and keep this place going!

Love this pub, such an authentic old English ale House. Cosy bar area great hosts and friendly locals. The selection of real local brewed ales is great.

What A STUNNING pub. The friendliest folk in the world. This is my new favourite little peaks pub, and my dogs agree after all the treats the landlord gave them. Roaring fires, great beer and lovely locals. Driving past it, it looks almost as though it has closed down years ago, don't be deceived! I've given it 5 stars for food, as by chance there was a birthday party buffet when we visited who very kindly let us tuck in, however I don't think they normally do food, so plan for victuals elsewhere.

A pub like no other. The Black Lurcher alone makes it worth visiting...the same could be said for the pork pies.

What a cracking pub. Beautiful heritage pub. No lager, no frills, no fancy cocktails. The mistakes so many pubs often make are not made here thankfully. Charming, old, proper. Only regret is that I don't live next door to it. I'd practically live there otherwise.

A real gem, a mythical trip to yesteryear! This place in enchanting, an ale lover's paradise where you're guaranteed the oldest traditions of an English tavern with the impeccable hospitality provided by a landlord and landlady that truly understand what the English pub is all about. If you're after cocktails or fine wine or a choice of thirty seven different gins then go to a bar in Matlock. However those seeking a taste of how taverns should be, go no further, this place is simply breathtaking.

Really glad I was able to visit here during our stay in the Peak District. Sadly, places like this are few and far between these days.

Walked 2 miles to find ‘the local pub’. Nothing about this pub is local, warm or friendly. The lady looked at me like I’d just spat at her when I asked for slimline tonic as a diabetic. Very unenjoyable experience, so much so that I was more than happy to walk 4 miles through nettles and cow poo to find somewhere else to drink. Avoid- like something off a horror film.

Unforgettable? This is. Plastic.This isn't. In any way shape or form. This is what pubs are supposed to be about. The antithesis of the pub destroyer. Yes 'spoons! Basic in every way, is what this pubs are about A simple, friendly, convivial, compact meeting place. A community space. Where the locally brewed beers are kept perfectly. Intrepid Navio was a winner. Abbeydale beers a regular option of 3. Wine and cocktails on offer. Lager isn't. Read the sign by the bar wall! The buzz of chatter is the only background noise. Regulars bring their well behaved dogs. The new couple running the pub were long term regulars. They've kept to the simple ethos of the pub established by the local legend and previous owner. The only food offered is pork pie and pickles. I'll miss the one pot wonders they used to serve. When I'm in the Peaks, this is not a pub, this is a kind of pilgrimage. I wish there were more like this

The pub is such a nice place to visit. If you have a chance definitely pop in for pint or two of local beer with delicious classic pub meal.

This is how pubs should be. Good people, great ales and amazing food - locals bring in seasonal homemade snacks.

Great ale and pickled eggs. Quirky for now but a rare example of a wet and local led pub.

A truly exceptional pub of great historical significance, being a great example of what a public house should be. It is like no other, a refreshing step back in time where conversation is key. Flagged floors throughout and a real fire in both of its two rooms. Expect dogs, handmade tables and chairs, and great real ales. Food limited to bar snacks, (pork pie etc). Open Thu to Fri from 5pm, and from 12pm on weekends. If you've not been before, try it, a very warm welcome awaits. This is my favourite pub of all time.

If you are nearby and like a pub you have to pop in here. It is a classic gem of a pub. It is like stepping back in time. A friendly welcome for conversation and a decent pint. Bacon fries, the best pub snack on the bar, 5 great ales and a load of bottles. There are very few pubs like this around nowadays. Once upon a time all pubs were like this before Wi-Fi, music, sports on the telly etc.

What a lovely old style dog friendly pub. Nice beers especially Black Lurcher proper knock out stuff. Nice ciders and definitely need to try toffee vodka. Real homely pub staff & locals very friendly.

A really quaint old English pub. Good beer. Went last weekend, a gang of us played music and camped in the field next door. The farm has just set up a lovely shepherds hut. So if you want a romantic weekend that's the place

This is an incredible historic pub! We Rode out there last night for the warmest welcome I've had in a long time. Drank the black Lurcher and away again into the darkest of nights! Will return.

Best pub in the Peak!! Don't go there expecting lager or to pay by card.

The Navio was bloody excellent. I was sloshed and loving it. Heck of a watering hole. great joint. 10/10 hope to make a return. If you're ever a weary traveler in the mist, this is the place.

Brilliant pub. Very old fashioned farmers pub. Don't expect up-to-date decorations or plastic recreations of a bygone age. This is the real deal. Last redecorated in the 1960s

Absolutely brilliant place... Stopped at near close and they made me feel at home with drinks, fires and marshmallows. Closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Music on stage often as well, and if you like, you can try your hand

Lovely friendly owners, we visited with group of walking ramblers, landlady was really friendly and welcoming very knowledgeable of all the beers available. We asked if it was possible to eat our sandwiches with pint as we had been walking for a few hours, this was no problem and really lovely of her to let us! The landlord also was very friendly man and both were happy being outside with the customers talking and engaging. Not had friendly service like this for a long time! Thank you for making us feel welcome!

A Lovely traditional drinks and snacks pub. Welcoming and friendly staff who are happy to chat and a cosy fire. Good choice of hand pulled beers that are well kept. Definitely worth a visit if walking in the area and there’s a car park across the road even if you’re not. It’s open later in the week and weekends. Also cash only.

What can I say about this place, it's like pubs were 100 years ago, not everybody's cup of tea but don't miss the trip if haven't been.

Unique pub with a fantastic, unique atmosphere. Staff are lovely, locals welcoming. Live music on Sundays . Lovely snacks like locally produced pork pie and pickle and regular visits from the Sunshine Pizza possee. It can't be beat!

Lovely, unspoilt pub, still as it has been for centuries. New landlords, now open on Thurs evening as well as Fri evening and all day Sat/ Sun. Folk session from about 3 ish on a Sunday. No Lager on draught, house beer is a 7% Stout, 3 other Ales on tap. Sandwiches and Pork Pies offered for food.

There's not many of this type of pub left, you've got to give it a try. Traditional music Sunday afternoon and a great cheese and pickle butty.
