Haven’t eaten in Thompson’s for a long time and decided to try it out for a mid-week meal. Great food, excellent service and great value. There is a set menu at £49.95 per couple for two courses and a bottle of wine. We opted for starters and main. The pulled pork spring rolls were excellent, mains we had the pork belly and slow cooked beef, again both excellent. Service was friendly and efficient -couldn’t fault anything. Would definitely recommend.

Very expensive "meal" that took almost an hour to serve, waiting staff were apathetic at best and very slow to serve..food was rotten, burger and chips were the worst and if you cant get chips or a plain burger right, there is something wrong. "10oz steak" wouldn't fill your tooth and the £23 lamb was so small in size we had to stop at the chip shop en route home. Seriously disappointed as we rarely go out so this was a very expensive excursion that was not so much a treat as a trauma. Decor and furnishings were worn and tired and men's toilets absolutely disgraceful. Never again

We don't go out much but decided to treat ourselves as we have no kitchen atm due to a burst water pipe in the house. So, so disappointed with our decision to choose the City Hotel's restaurant, Thompson's. Should have known when it was empty on an Easter Sunday. Arrived at 5.30 and best part of the meal was the view across the Foyle to the Peace Bridge. Service slow and staff seemed thoroughly unhappy and unhelpful. Food that came was very bad: small portions; the basics like chips and burger were rotten. "10oz" steak was tiny and "lamb" was 3 small strips of fat ....for £23. Total meal for 4: mains, plus 2 desserts and drinks was almost £140....4 small cokes: £11.37!!!!! Mens toilets were so bad you wouldn't see the likes at a festival...needed Wellies to get in...disgusting. I live in Derry and if THIS is what we are offering people both living in and visiting the city, God Help Us. Complete rip off ...buck up or sell up cos it is NOT the hotel it used to be. NEVER AGAIN!

Very disappointed with the meal, Staff were not in a rush to serve, and our meals had a lot of salt on the chips/burgers, on telling them about this they said, we will mention it to a chef. Avoid this restaurant as the food was very basic/disappointing and the prices were inflated for what you get. I wish we had eaten elsewhere.

We ate at the restaurant as part of a hotel package, after reading reviews i was a little worries about eating here but the food and service was exceptional. My husband and I had different meals and loved both off them. The portion size was generous and nothing was to much trouble for the staff. Great service all around! we will defiantly be back!

We ate here as part of a hotel package. The food is sub par, portions are terrible and prices are way over the odds. We ate two nights and there were 12 of us. We have stayed here before and the deterioration in standard is unbelievable. The menu was on a badly photocopied page with very limited choices. There were several supplements for no valid reason. Salt and chilli squid £2.50 extra, Lamb £5 yet on the normal menu were similar prices to everything else. Pork belly main was barely bigger than a postage stamp and all twelve of us did not enjoy the food because of the portion size, quality and lack of vegetables. One of our party ordered Salmon but without garnish and got a tiny Salmon fillet on a large plate. The second night was exactly the same limited food with the same cheesecake of the day (Baileys) which I am fairly sure was bought in rather than made. Breakfast had sausages that were full of meal and tasteless. A number of people picked up the bacon to eat it as it was impossible to cut. I made a complaint on the Sunday that was passed on and got a phone call Monday 08 November. This person was only interested in a future booking rather than responding to my concerns and issues. She told me the restaurant had went upmarket as some way of explaining the limited menu and lack of vegetables. Our group stayed here three years ago with fantastic food good portions and no complaints. I told the person that rather in going upmarket the restaurant had gone through the floor. At all times staff in the restaurant were courteous although timings were haphazard. I cannot see us using the hotel and restaurant again. Complaining directly did not work.

Visited here with friends on August 1st . We were seated and then waited for ages to be served and the young man who eventually took our order seemed to think it was alright to have no knowledge of what he was serving because as he told us he had just started working there! We had to spend the evening going to the bar to look for assistannce even though the place was very well staffed. Another young lady who eventually took our dinner order had no idea what was on the menu and indeed seemed to have no interest and seemed to think it was OK in fact she was a bit arrogant! Our thoughts were that it might be a good Ídea to train the staff before setting them loose on the public. We won't be returning again in a hurry.

Salt and chilli squid - was fine. Would have liked a really crispy batter but was reasonable. Soup was ok just. Caesar salad was cold meat and tasted like a prepacked salad lacking flavour. Mains - kids chicken goujons good, fish goujons ok just, steak itself was nice and cooked well but lacked seasoning. Burger was good. I asked for an alternative to pepper sauce as it's not really my preference. Was told yes but steak came doused in pepper sauce. We were hungry so ate and didn't complain. Wasn't overly expensive. Was fine but wouldn't be rushing back - plenty of nice places to eat in Derry.

My Dad and I went here for dinner on a quiet Saturday night. The food was mediocre, menu limited and the prices inflated. Additionally, the service was all over the place; we had a different server each time and a number of things were forgotten during the meal. The only pro that comes to mind is the central location and decent view. There are much better places to eat in the city!

I visited The City Hotel on new years day for a family dinner and I was very unsatisfied with the service we received. First of all, we arrived earlier than the time our table was booked for and went to the bar to get a drink for the fella behind the bar to lie to us saying that the blender was broke as when we went into the restaurant we spotted the same man bringing down cocktails to a table near us, when we went up to the bar again to try and order one he lied again saying that it was broke and we then said to him how come we have seen you selling them to other customers then? He then told us that we couldn't order them at the bar, we can only order them at our table even though the drinks were being ordered at the same bar either way. It was clear to see that your hotel was understaffed so we thought that going to the bar ourselves for the drink would be better. The waiting time for the food was also ridiculous, we had been finished our main course for around 20 minutes before anyone would come near us to lift our plates, then when they did we had to ask 2 members of staff where our deserts were as we were waiting a long time and other people who were sitting less time than us were being served. The first fella we told just nodded his head and walked on, then the second girl we told said "I will go and check if they are ready now" we were still waiting 20 minutes later before they brought them out and the fella didn't even apologize for the wait. We were so close to walking out and paying for the 2 courses instead as the waiting time was ridiculous. This was unacceptable for a 4 star hotel and it's safe to say that I will not return !

Annual Family xmas break i know there are alot of us but i have to say we booked 3 months in advance so they knew how many people there was in our party so they should be organised as regards to staff. The service was really slow the food came out in bits and pieces meaning some of the party had their mains but no sides which resulted in them having eaten their mains with no sides. The food was just ok i was really dissapointed we have been coming here this fifteen years and this was the worst i experienced soo dissapointed.

I attended my Christmas staff do here on Saturday night and I must say I was bitterly disappointed. The fish cake as starter was lukewarm and contained way more (lumpy) potato than fish. I let this go because we all know that the turkey and ham is the main event. Well that too was disappointing, not much taste and again the mashed potatoes were lukewarm. I took most of the meat home for my dogs the next day, unfortunately it turned a greeny colour despite my leaving the hotel an hour after the meal and the meat being refrigerated overnight. Anyway, back to the review, the trio of deserts were horrible and overdosed with sweetener. Unfortunately my colleagues did not allow me to complain at the time but safe to say, I certainly won’t return there ever again. As I was designated driver, even the coke I was served tasted ‘flat’. The meal and event was overpriced and overrated, I quite frankly feel like a fool who was parted from their money. £40 for a tastless, lukewarm meal, might as well have flushed the money down the drain. However, I don’t like to be entirely negative in reviews so the location of the hotel is very convenient to local car parks, the Christmas lights on the ceiling of the ballroom were very festive and the staff were all pleasant and friendly (despite looking completely rushed off their feet and having to run from table to table).

We visited this restaurant on 15th February wee night out! Staff lovely and welcoming seated at table straight away! First of all tables could do with a tablecloth after all your paying restaurant prices And receiving cafe settings! Very bare basic tables! Then menu was handed to us on an A4 sheet of printed paper! At 19.95 for steak surely they could provide a proper menu! Soup was nice but bread served with it was more than stale! When steak arrive at table it had an onion the size of a tennis ball crudely sat on the steak not chopped! It was funny if nothing else! But not very appetising! Half roast chicken was very basic and bland! To be honest I expected more from a hotel! Wouldn’t recommend or return! Extremely pricey for quality of food and quality of table settings!

We used the restaurant as guests at the hotel, we had one evening meal and a couple of breakfasts. Although the staff were friendly (the norm for Derry restaurants, I find) they consistently got our orders wrong. Our evening meal was very uninspiring, with a standard choice of dishes. One of starters was incorrect, wrong side with the main and a very long wait for dessert, with the main plates left, I assume we were forgotten as service only resumed when I asked a passing member of the bar staff. Breakfast was the usual cooked and continental choices, but the quality was poor. I’ve had far better food for a lot less cost in many restaurants and hotels in Derry, real shame because the location has loads going for it. Not planning to eat here again.

Four of us went to Thompson's restaurant in the City Hotel on Friday evening. Some of us had three courses and some two and the food couldn't be faulted except for the peppered sauce. Had dinner here recently with friends, as the restaurant claims to be one of the best in Derry. There were two options: either choose a set menu for 22.50 for four courses, or choose individual options and pay accordingly. I had the salmon as a main course, at a cost of 15 pounds, and I can't say it was value for money. I was given a relatively small portion, with some vegetables strewn on top, and a few chips. The salmon was lukewarm, and some of the chips were inedible. The service was not brilliant. Initially they made a mistake in our order, which had to be corrected. At the end they overcharged us by several pounds. Again this had to be corrected, which after a while they did. The music was too loud, and the decor was unimaginative. For this price and for a hotel in this class I expect much better. Other restaurants in Derry offer much better value: these include Da Vincis, Quaywest and in particular Pier 59, which has excellent fish. I don't think we'll be eating here again.

This is the main restaurant for Derry's large City Hotel, which I have reviewed elsewhere. It gets very busy so booking is required. The surroundings are pleasant, if not inspiring and the serving staff polite but service is a little bit slow and there seems to be a lack of genuine interest in the customer. We had a nice window seat - no problem there and the food was actually surprisingly good. I had a pleasant Chicken Supreme and my wife a tasty Hake dish. Although not top grade, we had no real problem with the food or the price (£65 all in). The wine was fine - an adequate Chilean Sauvignon Blanc but a soggy packet of Candarel artificial sweetener stuck to the wine bottle (see photo) was a bit of an unpleasant surprise. It's an adequate restaurant but the big question is, would we go back? No, I don't think do.

We booked a table at the restaurant to celebrate two occasions that included a send off as a few family members were leaving the country and also to celebrate a 30th wedding anniversary. We had a terrible experience and the few surprises we had planned were ruined by the staff. We arrived to find the booking wasn't recorded properly and our table was supposed to be for 14 people and found it to be setup for 6. The manager had said they tried to contact us on multiple occasions however we had no missed calls to prove this.We had left a cake and balloons into the restaurant for the occasion earlier that day, firstly when we were waiting on our table a staff member came to us and spoiled the cake surprise by announcing it in front of the people it was for. When we were being seated we found the balloons had not been moved over to the new table either and we had to ask for this to be done twice. Also no high chair had been provided either even though we asked for this twice. When it came time to pay we were shown a bill that had a service charge of £35 added as we were a party of more than 8 people. Although we were told we didn't have to pay this we were shocked this had been added in the first place when the night was more less ruined to start with by them. The only good things we could say about the restaurant was the food and one waiter who was very helpful and friendly.I would not recommend this restaurant as the service was awful and after the mistakes they made during our experience, they made excuses, didn't even offer a goodwill gesture to make up for this and tried to charge extra money to our bill.

We ate in this restaurant last nigh (11-08-16)t. Having previously been told that there was no 7:30 bookings available we settled for a 7:00 table. At 7:30 the restaurant was more than half empty. The lady that sat us down informed us of the specials and offers etc... We took advantage of the "twos company" offer, which was 2 courses for 2 people for £35. The lady informed us that the wine was Chilean and was happy with that as that would be my preference. However half way through the bottle I seen that it was in fact South African. Not the worst thing that can happen but seemed sloppyThe servers didn't really seem interested and sniggered when they sat my starter down as it slid across the plate. The mains was pretty dry and towards the end my tooth broke!! I informed the server who apologised and said that they would inform the manager. I was really annoyed that the manager who walked by several times made no attempt to check if I was ok and seemed to just want it to go away. I approached the manager as we were leaving and she said that she had never heard of this nor had the duty manager in all the time that they worked there. What relevance that had I'm still trying to figure out. I wasn't looking for a free meal or discount or anything like that but a bit of compassion would have been a minimum expectation. She said she didn't know what to say. I was in pain and no one really seemed to care.....not impressed at all

We dined here for our Sunday lunch yest 24/07/16. I have rated thus 5 out of 5 previously but yesterday was bearly a 2. Warm welcome as always by Restaurant Manager Carol. Starters were OK nothing outstanding. My salmon was beautiful but my garlic chips never arrived, salmon and veg is very bland. My husband had the lamb it was disgusting chewy and dried out, he couldn't eat it, the roast potatoes were cooked until as hard as bricks, cabbage dry and tasteless, cream potatoes tasted and looked like smash a coating formed over the mash the longer it sat on the plate. Irrespective of who cooks when but we know when it's not top chef Tony cooking the meals do not compare. The chefs have come in from another hotel and are damaging the great reputation Thompsons previously had. I loved the visible selection of desserts but consuming them wasn't a pleasant experience the chocolate cake was turning stale. Carol did nt charge for my husbands main course, she was totally understanding of what our issues were. We stayed for a while in the soft chairs and 6 other tables complained. Whilst sitting relaxing a very regular costumer over the past 13 years said there is a terrible decline in standards. Table service was terribly slow we were eating dessert whilst starter dishes were still on the table.

A real bug bear of mine since going vegan at the start of the year is restaurants that go all out with vegan options for mains but neglect to do the same when it comes to dessert - not so at the City Hotel! Even though the menu did not have any options for vegans the waitress spoke to the chef and I was presented with at not one, but 3 options to choose from! I went with two of the options combined in the end and it was pure bliss - coconut rice and a vegan brownie! I was in heaven and combined with the vegetable tangine with couscous i was not fit to move by the end of my meal. A shout out must go to our fabulous & friendy server who's name I have regrettably forgotten (Rebecca possibly..) as well as the chef - both ladies combined to ensure I had a memorable meal and one that would make me want to go back and dine there again.

We went as a party of eight on Saturday night. The meals were OK, portions not very big. The service was adequate, expensive drink. We were not informed at time ofbooking that there was a service charge of 10% imposed for groups of 8 or more.Had we known this we would have went elsewhere.

Great location as it overlooks the river. Food very fast and staff friendly and professional. Only negative point would be that it's quite pricey for drinks.

I was fortunate to be invited to dinner at this restaurant. Everything from the appetizers to dessert and after dinner tea was superb. I had lamb which was perfectly cooked and tasted divine. My wife had duck and mentioned it was prepared perfectly. Service was excellent as well. Each course was delivered in a timely manner. I hope to return the favor on my next vist to this beautiful city.

Went to our local hotel for family occasion. We were served by Tyler who was fantastic and looked after us very well. We all thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The food was fantastic. After our meal we decided to move closer to bar area to listen to the band and have a drink but still sat within restaurant area. The restaurant staff began to hoover around us and prepare for breakfast. This was annoying for our company as we we could barely hear ourselves talk over the noise of the hoover. I went to the reception area where I complained about the noise and asked if they could delay the cleaning until we had finished our drinks, Three male managers simply laughed at me and told me staff had to prepare for the morning. I felt totally disrespected and disregarded as a paying customer. I have dined frequently across the city and I have never been hoovered out of a restaurant / bar at 11:30pm at night. This hotel is happy to take your money but does not value their customers. Very disppointing end to a lovely evening. I will not be back.

Had the 2 for 1 deal here and not sure what to expect, however the meal was delicious, well cooked and beautifully presented. Wine provided with meal deal wasn't the best (Sauvignon Blanc) but I guess you get what you pay for! It doesn't mention on hotel website when booking but offer is not available on Saturday night, although I guess that's covered by "terms and conditions apply!" Overall a very good meal in nice surroundings

Mobility problems resulted in choosing Thompson's for dinner even though the reviews caused some concern. But, we had a quite nice dinner and experienced no service problems. We selected the dinner-for-two special, which at 35 Pound Sterling is a good bargain. I ordered a Caesar Salad and the pork dinner with honey baked vegetables; my wife ordered the pork with potatoes and an apple dessert. Wine choices were limited to a Chilean white or red, we went with the Cabernet. I was unfamiliar with the Tolva Cabernet and checked it out online - it was rated 3.8 by a small number of people who bought it and had an average retail price of $6. Really very good for that price. The food was better than Good, but just short of Very Good. The house bread was interesting and very good - it had some chili flakes giving it a slight bite. Presentation was good and quantity was more than enough - some was sent back. The apple dessert was very good and easily shared.Service was good and the only shortcoming was the failure to refill empty wine glasses - not a big deal for me since I have experience doing it at home. All in all there was nothing that would stop us from going it again.

I went here on the 25/6/2015 and took the great 2's company deal. I ordered a 12 oz rib eye and received a 10 oz sirloin. I asked for it medium to rare and it was more on the well done side. My girlfriend got the chicken with char-grilled veg and it was a shame the chicken wasn't char-grilled like the veg as the veg was very tasty and smoky. The pepper sauce was a bit watery and the noodles that came with the chicken tasted and had the texture of the ones in a cuppa soup. Desert was really nice though but it was ice cream so pretty hard to get wrong and the fudge cake was nice but have tasted alot better. The service was friendly and the win was really nice. It was £43 for two courses and an extra side which was a good price but food was not fantastic and should be alot better for a 4 star hotel. I will return as it wasn't a disaster but I expect better next time.

Ate here while staying at the hotel and frankly it was not good, goats cheese bruschetta starter was just a lump of cheese on bread, chicken supreme was overcooked and the pavlova was extraordinarily hard meringue, lots and lots of cream with some apple and grape on top. Would not recommend and would not eat here again.

We recently booked a meal for ten family members for a very special occasion. We were extremelely disappointed for several reasons. Firstly the restaurant was extremely cold - we were allocated a table near to the main door which opens onto the river and it opened every 30 seconds. Colder still was the restaurant manager that night - she was either politely rude or passively aggressive! We agreed a menu option a few days in advance but did not get what we had agreed - we were told that the menu presented was what we had chosen- we were told it was just a photocopy of the original coloured menu. Never a good idea to lie to customers, particularly when we are locals and would be looking to eat out on a regular basis. Next time we will choose a different restaurant - there are plenty of better options in Derry.

This restaurant is very very very good in the quality of its service and of course qaulity of the food offerings. Myself and my girlfriend have eaten here on numerous occassions including twice over the Festive Period of 2014/2015 and we were truely overwhelmed by the standards. I am amazed to see such mixed reviews here which does not give a true reflection of this restaurant whatsoever. The team are fantastic and we cannot wait to get back to dine here again. Also very reasonably priced and they use local produce.

While staying at the hotel we went for the £35 offer - two courses each and a bottle of wine. I don't think you could beat that - but the proof was in the eating....Firstly the staff were excellent. All were attentive and ensured that the meal flowed well. There are a few items on the menu which attract a surcharge but the overall quality of the meal was very good and well worth this small extra. We had the duck and steak - very tasty.

I went here for a birthday meal with family. The price was reasonable as they did two meals for £35 which included a starter and main with a cheap bottle of wine thrown in too.I had the risotto starter which was fine, and the rump steak as the main. I asked for it medium but I think they over seared the steak as it was a bit too well cooked on the outside. My brother had the cod which was tiny and looked pretty bad. He wasn't impressed with it.The staff were friendly enough, but when he mentioned the fish they used the old line 'others had it and loved it'. A bit unprofessional if you ask me.I don't think I would go back to this place in a hurry. There are plenty of better places to eat in Derry as you'll see from other TripAdvisor reviews.

We were staying in the City Hotel and decided to have the special dinner for two for 35 pounds at the restaurant. This includes starters, a main dish, and a bottle of wine. It also included a side order. We had the grilled chicken scallop with curried cream, noodles and char-grilled veggies. Portions were generous, the food was tasty and the service was friendly. The wine, which is from Chile was quite good. We were quite pleased with the value and quality and recommend this restaurant to anyone who is staying at the hotel.

Went here for a meal in January with friends as we were both using up vouchers we had received for Christmas presents. This place is absolutely exceptional in style and service. The food was excellent and was presented beautifully and all the flavours complemented each other. The steak was cooked perfectly and you could have cut it with a butter knife. The service and the staff were great and I can't wait to get back.I would highly recommend this place for a special occasion, light bite or even a quiet meal as a couple!! Loved it! What has happened to this place its been 5yrs since I last frequented its going to be longer before i will visit again. We booked as a large 30+ party for Sunday carvery and were there at allotted time but staff kept us waiting 30 mins, the service staff were very friendly but could do with a little training as they were all over the place on orders and service of food. When we went to carvery there was no ham no lamb and very little beef and turkey. Maybe the chef was trying to keep costs down but its a poor show to have nothing left with our large table plus another behind them, some of our group had to settle for end scraps with a lump of salmon thrown on top. The chefs at the carvery were clearly embarrassed by selection and one confided the chef never buys enough and its a common complaint . Have to give special mention to sweets as they were absolutely terrible both in presentation and taste the pastry chef should be sacked if that's the standard. The bar was staffed with between 2-4 ppl but it was still a10 minute wait to get noticed and it was not overly busy. How this place has 4* is beyond me, I will not be using again as its very poor value for money and there are cheaper alternatives with infinitely better food and service.

As a regular diner at the City Hotel I was looking forward to a relaxing evening with friends, quality food and a glass or two of cool wine. How disappointed was I. The waitress who took our order was very brusque to say the least; verging on being rude. She did not convey any level of respect or courtesy . 2 well done steaks were ordered; she proceeded to lecture us on the disadvantages of ordering ‘well done’ and rolled her eyes when my friend asked about a vegetarian option. We then ordered two bottles of wine, one white, one red. She returned with the wine and with a very heavy hand ‘plonked’ the bottles onto the table; no attempt was made to open the bottles; worse still no ice bucket was provided for the white wine resulting in a puddle of water in the centre of the table!Food began to arrive; things seemed to be looking up, starters were absolutely beautiful but alas it was short lived. Main dishes were well presented but not hot. The food was tepid, the chips were ’well done’ and the portion was minimal. I was so disappointed that I have taken the decision to cancel a family booking. When it comes to paying hard earned money for a party of 14, I would expect to be treated with respect; I no longer feel confident in the standard of service or quality of food that we may receive.

We were staying at the City Hotel for three nights and had dinner in the restaurant twice and breakfast three times. There was a couples offer of two courses for two people with a complimentary bottle of wine for £35. As there were 5 in the party we were allowed the deal at half price for the fifth diner (though we didn't get a half bottle of wine!). The choice on the menu was good and the quality was very good. Service was good and friendly. The breakfast buffet offer is what you might expect to find in a good international hotel. The hot food choice was impressive, with a self-service and some cooked-to-order options.

We were doing a 10 day CIE Independent tour of Ireland. The hotels were selected by CIE and each included the traditional self-serve Irish breakfast: Scrambled or fried eggs, Irish sausage, rashers ( Irish bacon), Potato farls, White pudding, black pudding, Baked beans, brown bread & fried mushrooms and tomatoes. All this served with coffee or tea, pancakes, sliced meats, cheese and fresh fruit, croissants bread & rolls, jellies, cold cereal, jelly and jams.We stayed at the Derry City Hotel for 2 nights in mid October, 2013. The service in Thompson's was great, extra coffee or tea was delivered to the table. The view of the Peace Bridge from the dining room was an added bonus. Their ham was not as salty as some of the other hotels and their potato farls were tasty puffy triangles. Everything was warm, replenished often, and the place was very clean.

We decided to have dinner at the hotel after a late afternoon arrival. There was a tour group who were speaking at quite reasonable volume. Unfortunately there was also a birthday party of 24 or so that we're virtually yelling. The find was adequate. My steak was suppose to be medium and was medium well. My wife's pork was over done. We got done as fast as we could so our ears would stop hurting.

We dined here at the beginning of the week and were totally surprised I have dined in many a restaurant over the years but this is by far the best customer service by friendly helpful staff that we have ever received. Food was astonishing and melted in the mouth. Portions were just spot on and it was clearly evident that the chef knew his job well and had been excellently trained. Care was taken in presentation and food was fresh and texture brilliant. The Maitre D led his team well and the team interacted excellently with the customers and each other so nothing was left to chance. We were finding it difficult to get into a reasonable restaurant in Derry on a Saturday night ... everywhere was busy. So we were delighted to come across Thompson's Restaurant in the City Hotel. There was a table for 4 available and a good deal on two courses plus wine. The food was good and the service was good. Friendly staff and a lovely meal what more could you want? Well, as it happens, there was a band in the bar across the foyer from the restaurant, and that just topped off the evening! Good music though not too intrusive from where we were sitting, so we could still have a conversation. When we left, the new bridge (the peace bridge?) which is across the road from the hotel, was all lit up and looked beautiful. A nice end to an evening which had started off being frustrating.

We were on our way back from Donegal and looking for somewhere for 7 of us to eat. We ranged in age from 8-85 so needed a decent children's and adult's menu. We tried to get a table in Quay West (who apparently also own the City Hotel), but they were fully booked until at least 8pm. We needed to eat early so that we could get back to Belfast as it was a Sunday night. The staff were excellent. The children's portions came in 2 sizes which is brilliant as my daughter has a healthy appetite. Mind you, she didn't finish the 4x large slices of pizza which were accompanied by s portion of chips. I ordered the vegetarian salad which was huge (for my side order I had a side salad-also a decent sized portion) and it was delicious. Aubergine, courgette, pepper, leaves and delicious dressing. We were all very pleased with our meals and would definitely go back.
