Delicious afternoon tea, lovely presentation, really good selection of sandwiches, sausage rolls, scone and cakes. Friendly service. Value for money

We were given afternoon tea by our son, daughter in law and grandsons, we had never been before, the food was delicious, very nicely presented and the staff are lovely. There was hot sausage rolls, hot pigs in blankets, then sandwiches, cakes, scones with fresh cream and jam. We had so much food we couldn't eat it all so the staff boxted it up for us. We certainly wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Been twice over the past week - food is great and fresh. The homemade soup is to die for & there are plenty options on toasties, sandwiches etc. Will definitely be back :)

Visited today with a friend We both had lovely tasty Carrot and Coriander soup , fresh sandwiches/ panini and pumpkin spice latte and very good empire biscuits. Lovely clean and happy place to meet friend for lunch with very helpful and polite staff, I would recommend.

Thistles was recommended to me by others who regularly use and speak very highly of Robert and his team for catering events. Robert exceeded my expectations - the freshest of sandwiches with different fillings, cakes and even warm sausages. Tea and coffee with homemade tablet. Incredible value, plenty of food for everyone and great feedback from all who were there. 5*++++ Thank you Robert and team.

Called in whilst out on a bike ride. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful, giving us a table where we could keep an eye on our bikes and trying to help when needed a phone charger. The coffee was excellent, actually tasted of coffee unlike a lot of places. Cheesecake was amazing. Will be back.

Been in a few times since moving to West Calder, breakfast is always cooked to perfection, will be back time and time again.

Myself and my family are regular visitors to Thistles’s it’s our absolute favourite lunch treat! Today my 11 year daughter and I popped along for a girlie lunch. We are always greeted with a lovely warm welcome, is it bad to say the staff even know our ‘usual’ orders ha! Food is always so fresh and never an issue with it! Home baking is my daughters fav part!! Cafe itself is spotless and welcoming, with lovely friendly, attentive staff! Fantastic covid restrictions in place, without being overwhelming. Can’t wait to return, let’s face it, I’m sure it won’t be long ha ha!! Xxx

A high tea was delivered to a home address for a small gathering of friends. The amount of food was very generous and delicious with a good variety of sandwiches, cakes and pastries. I highly recommend this family business for the quality of their food and service.

I placed my order for a full cooked breakfast over the phone and collected about 10 minutes later. The service from Irene & Bobby as always was amazing, friendly & funny. I always feel So welcome even though was in for a take a way. Once home, I had my breakfast and it was delicious! The haggis & black pudding were so tasty, Everything on the plate was tbh. Really has set me up for the day. Can’t wait to go back again.

Just want to thank Bobby and Marion Grindlay for a superb afternoon tea with lentil soup. We were celebrating our daughter's 30th Birthday in the garden and Bobby made individual platters for 6 people, loaded with delicious sandwiches, sausage rolls, chicken satays, haggis bon bons and dip, crisps and numerous cakes (cream scones, meringues, strawberry tarts, eclairs, and not forgetting their famous tablet). Certainly good value for money. Never had a disappointing meal, afternoon tea, snack or barbecue made by Bobby, Marion and their staff over the years. Good luck with reopening again and see you soon

Once again thank you for a lovely lunch, everything as usual perfect, Jim (husband) was in his 7th heaven with his delicious Chicken broth and me with my usual and lovely panini. Always a pleasure to have lunch here and despite Government rules changing again, everthing done (as was before) acording to the regulations and done with a smile. Would highly recommend a pit stop for anyone wanting a lovely lunch or breakfast. Right beside the bus stop going to Livingston or across the road coming from Livingston and all buses seem to stop in West Calder.

Popped into Thistle’s for lunch on Mon31st. The Covid hygene is excellent with masks required until seated,hand sanitizers mandatory and effective screening between tables which are thoroughly cleaned by staff. My wife & I felt very safe dining there and used their phone app for fest and trace data. The food is always freshly prepared and my Tuna Melt baguette was very tasty and was served with a nice side salad, homemade coleslaw & crisps. My wife had her usual applewood smoked cheese toastie. which she loves. Washed down with two Bailey,s cream Lattés. Alas Bobby’s famous merengues we’re finished but this allowed us to sample a scrumptious Munchies cheesecake- full of flavour & light as a feather! Can’t wait to return to sample more goodies from the extensive menu. PS :- Thanks to staff for the usual attentive service.

Had a wonderful lunch here today, as always fantastic food and wonderful service with a smile. Dedpite current restrictions and a wee bit less room we managed to be fitted in (thankyou so much). Despite being busy, with being acknoiwledged at the door and served with a smile. Food is always excellent here and soup, my husband says, is to die for as well as the merangues. Always a nice selection of cakes as well here if you just want a tea/coffee and a cake. But soup and range of rolls/paninis are very good. Well recommended.

I use CCS garage for MOT'S and popped in here for breakfast. Wasn't disappointed... (unlike last time when I decided to give the new cafe over the road my business). Been to thistles for lunch before but not breakfast. Thistles breakfast was cooked fresh.. arrived roasting on a hot plate. Tasty stornaway black pudding and everything else on my plate was hot. Served with toast and a hot coffee. At £7.50 I know where I will be going for breakfast next time I'm visiting ccs.

Love this place for either a cooked breakfast, or in this case alight lunch. Glad I booked ahead as place was jumping. Despite being full my order was taken promptly and my wife and I always enjoy the banter from the friendly efficient staff( cheers Jane).The range of paninis sandwiches & baguettes is excellent and there is very often a chef’s special to tempt you for something unusual.The soup& sandwich deal is good value for money and the choice of fresh cakes/ desserts is mouthwatering- the large meringue is my favourite.My wife loves the range of flavoured coffees.The cafe has a loyalty card which I commend.I feel lucky to have this great eating place on my doorstep and highly recommend it to those in W Lothian looking for a great value for money café.

This is a great wee place on the main street in West calder. They serve breakfast until 11.30am and then soups, sandwiches and toasties after that. They also have a great selection of home baking. Well worth a visit for breakfast or a wee coffee and a cake in the afternoon. Staff very friendly and everything is reasonably priced. Hope to go back soon.

Went here with my son on a wee drive oot for lunch, what a gem of a place, lovely fresh cooked food (two bits of cake went home with my son) cheerful friendly staff and great value for money, delighted that the background music was a favourite band of mine (Skipinnish) I shall be back It was a busy wee place but staff tell you how long your food will be all the better for having a chinwag with friends putting the world's to right.

Got afternoon tea for 2 ppl and wasnt impressed didn't have much selection of stuff for us to have and wasnt worth the money £8 per person !!

This is a spotlessly clean, bright & airy, well decorated & comfortable cafe. A breath of fresh air in West Calder. Or so I thought until we ordered scones with jam & clotted cream. The scones were brick hard, dry & tasteless. Such a disappointment! The jam was fine - can't go far wrong with jam, just scoop it out the jar. The 'clotted cream' was that disgusting synthetic squirty stuff which looks like shaving foam & tastes not much better.Such a shame you couldn't bake your own scones or buy in some home-baked ones from a local supplier. Your premises look the part & the staff were friendly & efficient. Just make a bit more effort on the ingredients & your cafe could be very busy. We were there on a weekend & the place was almost empty. I can't comment on the quality of the other food you serve but when you can't get the scones right, you are missing a trick.

Had a takeaway coffee today passing through...lovely coffee and tablet as well. Will be back to sit in and eat.

Yesterday 28 family and friends came together to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of my sister and brother in law at the Thistle Cafe. We were served and catered for by the staff there who made us us feel at home and added a little magic to the already fine environment. On this occasion it was a set menu but I can assure you the food was cooked to perfection and served up in fine style. I particularly liked the presentation of the dessert which could have easily graced the tables of any 5 star restaurant. It is not a huge place but this probably helps to give the cosy and comfort factor to the place. My wife and I will definitely return there soon to sample their day to day fare. I am positive we will not be disappointed. This restaurant is a great asset to West Calder.

A great place to meet up with friends and have lunch. The staff are so friendly and seem to personally know most of their patrons. All the cakes are homemade and truly delicious.

Well located in the Main Street of this former mining village. Good coffee, and nice eats.all at reasonable prices.

We visited here on a spur of the moment for a breakfast treat, I certainly wasn't disappointed, food was delicious... I had a bacon baguette and my husband had the full breakfast... Both of us scoffed the lot... The service was tremendous and the wee lady was so happy and cheery... I'll be going back especially to try out the cake delights at some point.

I have been a few times to Thistles and it is a lovely, bright cafe with a good menu.

I visit thistles regularly prob that much I now just ask for the usual great staff and chef they also do a loyalty card. I live in Bathgate and it’s worth the drive up to west Calder for the best panini around and my daughter loves the lentil soup. Well worth a visit

Had a lovely tea and cake or irn bru it’s a great cafe staff are friendly and welcoming there lunch menu is very good too lots of choice and it’s a lovely relaxing cafe can’t fault the service of the staff it’s first class x x

I've called in here twice now for soups and coffees, and I will do so again. The home-made soup is so good that my companion had a second helping. Staff and regular customers are very friendly.

Encontré este café buscando un lugar para almorzar con mi pareja, que visitan por primera vez. Tiene un diseño exquisito interior, muy espaciosa, limpia y tranquila, con un menú variado con buenos precios. Presentación de los platos es 10 / 10. Por desgracia, el ambiente era escasa, claramente un lugar para que los comensales locales.

I still like to come for breakfast for my usual coffee cheesy scrambled egg roll . I get on well with all staff . I still feel very welcomed comfortable . I have tried different visits had coffee and scone really enjoyed . And another visit I had the lunch menu I had the cheese toastie with salad it was excellent really enjoyed . I was very surprised how busy and full it was . two customers came in was about to walk out . but as we were about ready to leave . it was our pleasure to save the day for you by saying have this table they couldn't thank us enough . but not forgetting my duty for you I explained the drill sitting in menu on table staff will take your order

I really enjoyed my lunch at Thistles yesterday. The food was excellent. I highly recommend the great value soup & pannini deal. I loved the Strawberry Pavlova. This was my third visit and every time I have had first class service from all the staff.

I first encountered Thistles at an outside function where they were the caterers.The selection of goodies was vey appropriate to the occasion, and of excellent quality.On a later visit to the cafe, I had the pancakes and maple syrup with a Luca's ice cream and english tea, delicious! The ambiance is very pleasant and welcoming, as are the staff.

Great range of snacks from rolls and Lorne sausage right through to some exquisite baguettes and tasty soup. Coffee is very good and the cheesecakes - WOW. The serving staff are very professional and the tall thin chap with blonde hair is extremely polite and knowledgeable about the range of snacks on offer. Well done Thistles and keep up the good work. A credit to West Calder. The sandwich and soup deal is great value.

Love this place, we have gone here for years, food is fresh and tasty and staff are really friendly. They also do outside catering and its excellent value, Best cheesecake I've ever had and cheese & coleslaw baked potatoes are my favourite !

We met here before and after a nearby meeting. On both occasions it Essex Ellen's coffee and hot chocolate with a round of toast. But the menu for brekky and lunch liked so good it won't be long until I return. Great banter with friendly staff.

I have been coming here frequently since the lovely Coffee Shop opened. I have had breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and their Friday Night Special Dinners and have enjoyed them all. The food is amazing, fresh and very tasty. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Considering there are other eating places in West Calder, this Coffee Shop seems to be always busy. The place is spotless and well presented.As promised to my Mother in Law, I took her here yesterday for their delicious Afternoon Tea, where a table had been reserved for us. She was not disappointed. She couldnt believe the amount of sandwiches that was put in front of us with all the home baked cream scones, meringues (to die for, might I add) cakes and crisps. When she had, had enough the staff carefully packed what was left into boxes for her to take home. I would highly recommend this Coffee Shop to anyone wanting a good all round tasty meal or snack at very reasonable prices. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Thanks to all the staff at Thistles. I will be back !!

situé dans un endroit peu touristique, ce salon de thé semble être la "cantine" des locaux. Les plats chauds sont bons et le choix est très varié mais les desserts ne sont pas à la hauteur de la réputation. Le cheesecake notamment est vraiment beaucoup trop riche en crème, à la limite de l’écœurant.

I love to visit here the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is beautiful and the service is quick. I love the little play area in the corner for the kids and the kids lunch box is a perfect size for the little ones.

We go about once a month for lunch. The food is fresh and tasty . It is so good that I have been in Dunblane with a friend for lunch and we have come to the Thistle to eat.

There is normally two soups on offer and at least two cheesecakes - which are to die for!!Menu is varied from sandwiches, burgers, toasties and baked potatoes to name a few.Staff are super helpful and also know our regular order!Highly recommend:-)

Went for lunch with my mum and dad recently. They had been before and said it was great.It doesn't happen very often (and don't tell them) but I have to admit that the old folks were right. This place is fab!The cafe itself is spacious and clean. The staff were super friendly, chatty and attentive and the food was perfect - really generous portions with everything freshly prepared and beautifully presented.Will definitely go back!

Its now 18 months I have been visiting Thistles . I still enjoy my roll and coffee. All staff are excellent . . you get a good welcome . My visits are mornings I find it relaxing and comfortable .when strangers ask directions to Thistles its still my pleasure to not only give directions . I still explain the drill to them how it works if eating in be seated they will come to you or if wanting to take out go to the counter where they will take your order .

Was in for breakfast after a visit to peddle power. Fairly busy with regulars and didn't feel particularly welcome. Swithered whether to stay or give it a try. Once I had ordered a full breakfast the staff were friendly and attentive. It took me to approach them before they cracked a smile. The food was excellent local produce but slightly expensive for what it was. This was a mid week visit, fast forward a few weeks and after another peddle power visit with family we decided to pop in. We missed breakfast by half an hour which meant there was a selection of toasties, paninis, baked tatties and soup. Weekend staff were very friendly, food was nice but basic for the price. Guessing you pay for quality local produce and support local independent traders. Although its slightly expensive I will be back.

From the sandwiches to the Pennines their is no better in west Calder ,and their outside catering is just brilliant, the staff are so good and make sure that you feel at ease .already booked for a retirement party !! So don't take my word for it !! Just Go !!

WE organised a finger buffet for 20 guests and what Marion and Bob provided was unbelievable.Table cloth, plates and napkins were also provided so we could just relax and welcome everyone.Give them a chance. Ask for their catering menu. The choice is astounding, really.

graet selection of food available, soups and the filled rolls (especially the Haggis) are tasty. Wide selection of paninis, baguettes and sandwiches are also excellent. Coffee is served in a decent sized cup (mug sized). Far better value than the high street cafés.

Me and my partner have been trying out all the local cafes and restaurants the past few weeks as we are moving close to the area and found Thistles Coffee Shop on trip advisor as it is listed as one of the best...and it didn't disappoint.The decor is plain and simple but the food is anything but ! The options for sandwich/panini fillings was the most extensive we have ever seen - and all sounded delicious. We went for the soup and panini deal which was reasonable at under £6! We had chicken, haggis and peppercorn sauce panini which was a new one for us but wow it was amazing! Have been talking about it ever since. The soups were also very deep with flavour and a great size portion.We of course couldn't leave without trying one of the home made cheesecakes so we ordered 2 kinds (1 caramac and one picnic sweeties on top) - both were so good ! Not great for the waist but an indulgent treat with a coffee :). They were so good we took 2 away with us for the parents to enjoy.Overall the shop is lovely with great service by all staff - even the owners were chatting away to us for ages. We will definitely be recommending this gem of a place and look forward to returning again.

I emailed the cafe before hand asking if they cater for vegans - they always have a soup on and their cous cous is fine - they offered to buy in hummus too and said I could recommend something for when I visit If I gave them notice of when I'd be in.Very friendly and willing to go out of the way for people with allergies.I had their soup and a hummus roll - with this though, they also gave me a wonderful salad and some cous cous :) Great place and would highly recommend for anyone.

Tried this place as it is very local and convenient to my home..Family run business,soup.sandwiches all freshly made,a bit of a wait if busy but worth it,can chat after your meal they don't move you on,congenitally at a bus stop as well if no car.

Excellent and friendly café with staff who bend over backwards to cater for all needs. The food is outstanding in taste,presentation and portion size. The menu is wide and varied with only local top quality ingredients used.One of our joys of visiting regularly are the homemade cakes,in particular finding out what delicious cheesecake they have available.If you are local or just passing through it is a must visit.

I live in West Calder. The Thistles is not the only cafe in town, but it is the one I always go to: Food & drinks are excellent and staff always friendly and attentive. It is a cafe, not a posh restaurant, but what it aims to do it does very well. Will continue to visit regularly.

After going to Thistles a few times, it is fair to say that nowhere in the area can compete. The panini are always spot on and the truffles are absolutely divine.

I have been here many times but more so in April as I had a few visitors who were all impressed with Thistles. The service is great. Always friendly and discreet which is fantastic. They always have a great selection of fresh food which means I never know what to have when I visit. I must drive the lady taking the order to distraction as it takes a while but she never complains. Anyone visiting west Calder should make an effort to visit Thistles. It really is a refreshing change. I like that it is a light and airy atmosphere. I believe they occasionally do evening meals but I never hear about then until afterwards when everyone tells me what a great evening they have had. My fault I'm afraid. I look forward to my next visit.

I've been pleased to tell them also how it works . If eating in take a seat they will come to you. Or take away to go to counter and order .

This was the first time we had been to Thistles in the evening as we have always loved their day time menu. My husband and I had a beautiful three course meal tonight, in a lovely little cafe/restaurant. Atmosphere was great. The meal was superb, with no faults at all. The banoffee tartlet was to die for. Fresh, well cooked vegetables. The staff were very attentative and made everyone feel welcome. We will definately be back. Thanks to all at Thistles

While visiting West Calder (Aug 14, 2014), we came upon this marvellous coffee shop, where we were greeted and made to feel right at home. My spouse and I shared a sandwich (haggis and brie) and we each had a butternut squash soup—both selections were delicious. This was our first experience with haggis which seemed similar to tourtière pie at home. If you ever find yourself in West Calder, I would recommend that you try this coffee shop. They have a variety of menu items to choose from and their homemade sweets are so, so good! Marion, the owner, went out of her way in the rain to assist us in our visit to West Calder.

My daughter and i went in yesterday for the first time on passing through west calder,we were NOT disappointed here,i had the tattie and leek soup and roll which was beautiful and the portion size was very generous.My daughter diane had the cheese and red onion toastie with salad ,crisps,home made coleslaw,and dressing and the toastie was full to bursting,we both had a can of juice and the bill was £8 very reasonably priced for such good quality food served in an immaculately clean environment,very friendly staff and very quick service would defo recommend this place and i will go back

The menu is quite extensive for a small coffee shop, the prices are very reasonable, they have a wee kiddy play area and a very clean and nice smelling toilet but clearly the regular customers get the friendly treatment from the staff. I felt almost intrusive and not particularly welcome. The coffee is nice and the regular customers seemed to be happy. I usually favour independent coffee shops over the chains but have had much warmer service in Starbucks.

My husband and I along with some friends went to Thistles on friday night for a meal. The service was excellent and the presentation of the food and the food itself was first class. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal and as it was a BYOB it kept the cost down will certainly be back.

Popped into Thistles Coffee shop for a coffee today whilst I was waiting for a bus. It is a cafe I use quite often if I am in West Calder. The staff are always very helpful and prices are very good. They have an excellent selection of cakes. Food is good with an extensive menu and all nicely presented. Nice decor and plenty of space.

This is a lovely bright coffee shop, with an extensive menu and reasonable prices. Have been on many occasion and always had good food.They sometimes do dinner on a Friday night - BTOB and great value. Wish they did it more often though!And they have a selection of kids toys in the corner, which is very handy to keep our 2 year old amused while we eat!

This must be one of the best coffee shops around. Everything is first class. The sandwiches / rolls were very fresh and good quality. Their selection of fillings is very good and varied and again fresh. The service was excellent and the ladies on the day I visited were very efficient and unobtrusive. The selection of cakes is good and have a very home made quality. Delicious. There is a very relaxed atmosphere here and you can sit and enjoy your meal and chat away with friends. The coffee was good but I like mine a bit stronger so I'll remember to ask for another shot next time but that is just my taste. My friends thoroughly enjoyed the lattes they had.I have also used the take away service which is every bit as good and it is nice to look forward to after you have finished all your shopping. Overall this is a great place to visit and their varied menu means they have something for everyone.
