The Yard in Torridge

It's just lost it. The restaurant was sold on a year ago and unfortunately the quality of the small plates has taken a terrible dive in quality. Sadly, unless they really sort out the dishes and bring the standard right up, I don't think The Yard will be there long term.

Lovely food, Friendly service and a nice atmosphere. All the food is so tasty. Menu changes each time and always lots of fish beautifully cook. Some of the portions are quite large, pasta and fries are almost a main meal portion.

tasted frozen, no flavour,slow service, wouldn't go again, had way better tapas at the concho lounge, disgusting food, just as disgusting as the owner treats stuff,owing thousands in wages to them and food suppliers and agency stuff, avoid.

Fantastic anniversary celebration meal! Kate was excellent when we arrived, as my reservation hadn’t registered on their system (probably my error), but even though they were very busy, she found us a lovely table and immediately arranged a couple of complimentary glasses of Prosecco. An example of first class service! In addition Sian looked after us very attentively throughout our evening. The food was delicious and great value. We opted for the mushroom croquettes; pulled pork; duck; chicken pasta and crab arancini, all of which were very tasty. Our favourites were the croquettes and the pulled pork. We were so pleased we selected here for our special evening. Thank you!

Every dish was very tasty. Probably had about 7 different dishes between 4 of us. Great advice from the waitress too as to whether we were ordering too much or not. Food was so good we’ve been creating some back home. The chorizo and bean stew was superb.

Found this wine bar via trip advisor and managed to get the last table of the night, quaint little street and nice atmosphere, the waitress was great , informative, friendly and lovely to our cockapoo Ted! thank you for his treats. The owner was friendly and we enjoyed our tapas and the music and atmosphere , good vibes here. The only thing that wasn't quite right for me personally was the texture of the lemon posset ( my favourite) ? had gelatine in? consistency odd , shortbread biscuit was delicious as was the tiramisu

We read mixed reviews about the Yard, but our experience was fine, food excellent, very tasty, service, on point, everyone in our group of 8 had there first dish at the same time, then it kept coming in a timely manner, that you were ready for the next dish, the sea bass was the stand out dish. Some dishes a little pricey for what they were, Having said that, we would definitely return as we are locals. A very pleasant evening.

What used to be my favourite restaurant in Appledore is no more, menu completely changed (for the worse IMO) everything served from the kitchen is as spicy as hell, way too hot and maybe down to the Asian 'influence' in the kitchen Also get your ventilation sorted out from the kitchen, fumes wafting into the restaurant itself, my clothes stunk of them the next morning. Will give it a miss for a while, sorry 😞

We booked The Yard for a midweek birthday celebration after getting a recommendation from a friend. I must say it was better than I expected. The food was super tasty, service was first class, atmosphere for a Wednesday evening was good, nice relaxing music playing in the background when we arrived at 6.45 and the restaurant filled up by 7.45pm it felt trendy and buzzing. We loved the warehouse decor look especially the bronze cutlery and water flasks. We ordered 5 tapas dishes between 2 of us and I think 4 would have been more than enough, you can always add to it if you are still hungry. Well cooked local produce and alcohol, my husband enjoyed his beer and I loved my cocktail "Whole nine yards" Pimm's. Gin and prosecco with lime juice. I also had a dessert, total cost £69 which we felt reasonable for the quality of the food. Something a bit different. We will return. Thanks very much.

Beautiful fresh food, gluten free options available. Beautifully presented dinner. The staff were welcoming and attentive. The restaurant itself is both modern and homely. I definitely recommend a visit here whilst in the area.

It just didn’t quite work. The service was mediocre, as was the food. I think, looking at past great reviews, something has recently changed which is not working. I hope the owner gives it an overhaul and that things improve.

Visited the yard many times on our holidays to Appledore. It’s always been the highlight and most anticipated meal we’d have. Unfortunately tonight it in no way lived up the very high standards in terms of quality we’d come to expect. We ordered the Buddha bowl, beef, scallops and fries. The scallops were under and cold, the beef was tough and chewy and the Buddha bowl was just odd. There was a huge hard veggie sitting in the middle that a steak knife would have struggled to get through. The only way I can describe it is it was intentionally cold. Without any exaggeration it was inedible. We left nearly all of it and to be fair to the yard they removed the scallops from our bill. I’ve given them two stars as the cocktails were excellent as usual as was the front of house service. A massive let down given our previous excellent experiences here. Very sadly we will not be back when we visit again later in the year.

Been coming to Appledore for over 30 years and this is the first ever time we been here (even when it used to be the old Coach & Horses). The staff are all Welcoming and friendly, the food is way out of this world, it so delicious. The food does come in small portions and is more of a sharing/tapas menu, but it’s fabulous! Practically all the food we tried I would recommend, especially loved the Pardon Peppers, Crispy Holsworthy Belly Pork, Yard Buddha Bowl, Thai Fish Cakes, Cajun Fries, and the King Scallops. As we were paying and getting ready to leave, we decided to book a table for next week again as we loved it to much! Also the tips go to charity! Thanks again, Team Yard👍

Genuinely one of the best spots in Appledore. The food is outrageously good and really caters amazingly for gluten free options. Wish we knew about it sooner !!!!

We arrived at The Yard without a reservation on a Friday evening having caught the ferry from Instow, with backpacks and wearing hiking boots, as we were walking the Coastal Path. We were made to feel welcome, and our backpacks were stashed out of the way. We had the most delicious food, cocktails and beers, and friendly service. This was the best meal of our two weeks walking from Minehead to Padstow.

A thoroughly enjoyable meal. Staff so helpful. Had our dog with us. No oriblem biscuits supplied. Thank you.

The food is good overall. The Thai fish cakes were not cooked through and the peanut sauce was terribly bitter. Scallops should have been 4 rather than 2. The belly pork was delicious as was the brisket. Definitely needs veggies. Lovely venue and staff. Wish I had discussed the fishcakes. It wasn't till later I realised why I wasn't enjoying them.

We had the pleasure of eating at The Yard last night for the first time, and I have already booked another table! The food was absolultley stunning and so delicious! We would highly reccomend and cant wait to try the food again! The pork belly was of particular delight, along with the scallops, oh and the buddah bowl, and the chicken skewers and the beef!! Its ALL great!

Myself and my two sisters visited Clovelly village and on leaving went into the brewery shop where we met the owner of The Yard restaurant Appledore. We were going into Appledore anyway so we booked in for early evening meal. We were not disappointed, we shared half a dozen dishes all of which were delicious, it was an amazing experience. The place itself is very quirky and the staff are lovely and friendly. Would highly recommend.

Good food, need to remember to add veggies to your order, if you order lamb chops £18, that’s all you get I ordered the salad and chips to make the meal. Flavours good, drink selection good, service okay. Parking at the main car park at the end of the quay. Dog friendly.

Gorgeous interior minimum fuss! Staff were welcoming and the food was to die for! Best meal in a long time. The pork belly and steak kebab were amazing. Other dishes we had, tuna steak!! Delicious! Tacos Delicious! Kids meals were also wonderful.

We visited The Yard last weekend, and to be honest have really struggled to understand why it gets such good reviews from others. The atmosphere is cosy and the drinks were nice, but the food was probably the worst we have eaten in a restaurant. The extortionate prices do not match the quantity or quality of the food - we paid £12 for a dish of 4 small prawns and also got caught out by the £16 ‘sharing’ starter which other reviews have mentioned being tiny and bland. The waitress was rude and refused to ask the chef to make changes to a dish for the pescatarian members of our family. Overall, hugely disappointing and would not return.

So many wonderful flavours, everything cooked perfectly, generous portions and friendly service in a charming setting and all for exceptional value! Highly recommend - we wish we hadn’t waited until our last night to visit (two families staying in Appledore for Easter).

Our family of 5 had a lovely meal here. The inside of the restaurant is very inviting. The menu is quite eclectic (eg chicken penne and yakitori chicken). We ordered a variety of dishes- the kids raves about the penne pasta. I loved the beef skewers. Service was very good.

We ordered drinks, and they came fairly quickly, then we spoke to the waitress about the food. She advised us to order 2 dishes each and maybe a side, this we did. We also ordered the meat starter for £16.00 which we were informed was enough to share. When it arrived it had 2 meat balls on, 2 padron peppers 2 dips and some pitta bread, not very appetising at all . The waitress came to clear away and we had put our plates together for her. She told us to keep the plates as there were not enough plates to have fresh ones ! I questioned this, and she gave me attitude, which in turn caused me to request clean plates for our mains, which is standard practice anywhere you go ! After a minute another waitress brought fresh plates to our table, but you could tell we were being talked about. The main food comes in small tapas style, so it sort of arrives at one time, however our dirty fries arrived some time after the other dishes, so we left those. The chicken dish was most odd, and didn't taste like chicken, it tasted slimy, which concerned me. The beef skewer was rare, and my husband does not like rare meat, and we were not asked our preference, so the dog got that! The pork belly was not crispy, so a little too greasy for us, and the pasta dish was average. We had researched this restaurant and were so looking forward to the authentic flavours from the chef, however this was not apparent in any of the food. It was all bland. I was most concerned by a comment from a waiter regarding where we live. He claimed he had lived in the area however it was now 'Little india" this seemed a racial slur to me and my family, and it made us uncomfortable. The restaurant is not cheap, however the food does not match the price range, neither do the staff!!

We ordered 9 dishes in total , between 4 of us. The food is brought out so quickly, too quickly that you can’t even stop to chat. 8 of the dishes came and were eaten and it then became apparent that our chicken skewers had been forgotten or given to another table . The waitress apologised and said they would get them done for us - unfortunately on arrival we soon discovered on cutting into them that they were raw. The waitress agreed to take them off the bill after taking a sample back to the chef . When she asked if we wanted the desert menu we declined, as it was clear she wasn’t offering them on the house. That would have been the correct thing to do. It was a very poor end to what started as a nice evening . My advice to the restaurant would be to slow things down, give people a chance to enjoy the food and for the kitchen and waiters to get it right .

As I have enjoyed many meals previously, we booked again with friends and family. But I find that the menu has changed, I wouldn't say it was tapas more like Americana. And every dish was so salty.Disappointed ! Really hope they go back to there other menu.

Went here with 3 friends and one of there daughters tonight for the first time, will 100% be returning! The staff for starters were so kind and friendly and have a laugh with you! They were amazing with my friends daughter playing with her and making her laugh they were so nice, made such a difference to our night, the food was lovely! The atmosphere was really nice, very cool, cosy place, Can't wait to return hopefully not driving so i can try the cocktails!

Service and atmosphere where great but it's not clear its a tapas restaurant. So it's very very expensive and the quality of the food doesn't justify it. End up having 2 tiny dishes and leaving to eat elsewhere.

Managed to get a table last night for three people (didn’t expect it to be so busy for early March) and so pleased we did. We enjoyed an absolutely fantastic meal with attentive staff plus a great atmosphere. We picked couple of starters to share and then a random selection of 6 tapas. Tuna, scallops, brisket, pork belly and one other all excellent. Some very good beers.

We had a fabulous meal at The Yard. As a family group we shared lots of delicious dishes…… some of our favourites were the prawns, scallops, brisket tacos, chicken penne, thai fish cakes, chicken skewers…….. Being gluten free I was amazed at the number of options available to me. We will definitely be back and would recommend The Yard to anyone

Very disappointed no atmosphere our experience was marred by the the people at the table next to our not controlling the pack of dogs that wondered around and sniffing our food and making it difficult to enjoy our meals. We will not return.

This was a great meal and fun to try the new menu. There was a warm welcome from the staff and a check-in from the chef as she knew we are regulars. Every dish was delicious with some great flavours, plus the desserts and Fancy Pants rose wine! I was shocked to see a negative review from last week. This has never been our experience here (and we've been many times!). The new owners are superb foodies and very customer focused! We will be booking regularly to secure a table, especially when it gets busy in the summer.

Me and my partner come here for our Valentines meal, we was looking forward to coming as have never been here before and have heard good things! The service was great from the 3 Staff members we spoke too, unfortunately we did not get their names but they were lovely. We ordered 5 Dishes and 2 Cocktails, our dishes were Rosemary and Garlic Focaccia, Pork Belly, Beef Brisket, Cajun Fries and Chicken Penne Alfredo. All the dishes were okay, but when the Chicken Penne came out it was grey and looked unappetizing, I am very fussy with meat from previous bad experiences so was instantly put off by the appearance of the dish, my partner is the complete opposite and will normally eat anything. After he ate some of the chicken he was also instantly put off and refused to eat anymore. The chicken taste like fish, which is obviously not normal. After we mentioned this to the girl who collected our plates, she quickly went to the kitchen and who I'm guessing is the manager came to our table, we explained our concern about the food and he simply told us that "the chicken goes grey when they cook it as its park of the thigh" which we understood, he then said "its obviously not fish so not sure why it tastes like that, its probably because we season it with lemon" he then walked off before we could say anymore. This was definitely not the explanation we was expecting, why would lemon make it taste like fish? We was not offered any dessert menus until about 10 - 15 minutes later when someone came over with a menu and just pointed at the desserts and walked away again before we could say anything. We then waited another 5 -10 minutes for someone to come over. After us noticing the they were clearly talking about us and staring at our table we felt too uncomfortable to stay for any longer. We asked for the bill and noticed that the Chicken Penne was still on there, we do not believe we should have paid for something that not only tasted awful and looks gross but also did not eat, all together there was 2 pieces of chicken and about 4 bits of pasta eaten and it was still a full bowel when it was taken back to the kitchen. At this point we just wanted to leave so paid the bill and left. Coming from a catering background i do understand that you can get difficult customer sometimes but we was very polite and even considered not saying anything as felt guilty for being honest, we did not expect to get anything for free but did not think we should have to pay for something that we barely ate and clearly was not happy with. We personally would not recommend getting this dish if you visit here.

We popped in for a midweek bite with the dog - they accommodated the dog pram (elderly dog) and were so friendly and welcoming. It is furnished with goods from local businesses, looks really authentic and the food is local too. Food tasted great and had a nice range. We’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

We’ve been to The Yard several times times now and loved it each time. Fabulous food (tapas style but a mix of English, Thai and a few Indian dishes too). Service is friendly and always so good, great wines and desserts to die for. Highly recommend.

We booked dinner here for our two families the night before our wedding. We all had an amazing meal sharing many delicious options. The bao buns, mac and cheese ribs were crowd favourites. There is a friendly cozy atmosphere, and the staff were very welcoming, even surprising us with a toast to our upcoming wedding! We will definitely visit again if we're in the area!

Visited last night with my wife and two friends. Food was absolutely brilliant. Particularly the beef squewers and bombay potatoes, yum. Lovely pre Christmas atmosphere. Despite being busy service was very good. Really nicely decorated and rustic on a winter's night. Good selection of beers too.

The selection of drinks brought a change from the usual offerings and great to see them support so many local businesses. The food though was slightly disappointing in the lack of flavour and not sure who thought it good value to charge £10 for 3 chicken wings wherever they are sourced from. We would come back for drinks but the food is overpriced though maybe the tourist trade are happy to pay if they think they are getting something different.

Do not sleep on this place. Absolutely bloomin' outstanding. We ordered way too much, excited to get a break from the usual sea side offering and we still asked for every remaining scrap to be boxed to take home. It's was that good. Seafood, amazing, vegetable tempura, fantastic. Concidering the generous portions, great presentation and quality on show, we where really suprised to find despite ordering more or less half the menu, the price was excellent value for money. A treat more than a regular haunt, but an affordable enough treat we are going to probably treat ourselves again before we go home 🤣. Really lovely atmosphere, good vibes. Food is good and the concept is nice. A couple of dishes weren't great, but in the whole the food was tasty and good value. Drinks were also good. The service was a touch hap hazard, but it was very busy, so the staff can defintely be forgiven for that. Plus they were all very friendly and welcoming Would definitely come again when I'm next in the area would recommend to anyone.

What a find - such lovely friendly attentive service & the food was amazing - small tapas size we were advised how many we should order for 2 - it was difficult choosing as the whole menu is so tempting! The atmosphere was lovely it got very busy very quickly & I would advise to book - we had a excellent night & will definitely return.

Great experience. We had 10 tapas between 4 of us and were full at the end. Beef kebabs and Mac and cheese were the stars for us. Lovey intimate setting and everyone really friendly. Fully recommend it. Bookings in sittings at 6pm and 8pm. Not sure on whether other times are available.

We were lucky to get a walk-in spot along with our two doggies. Such friendly, genuine service and the food and drinks were just incredibly good! We had the Moscow mule with spiced rum and the espresso martini with Baileys! Each tapas dish was so delicious and we left the restaurant feeling so satisfied! Hit the spot - I would have literally ordered every dish on the menu if I could have eaten that much as I loved their take on the different dishes. This is a must visit place!

I rarely feel compelled to leave a review but The Yard really deserves a mention! Every member of our family (two adults, a 13 year old and 8 year old) look forward to our annual trip to this restaurant and, yet again, we had an absolutely amazing evening. From the warm welcome and delicious food to the personal attention from all members of staff, the experience at The Yard is second to none. A truly unique venue.

Probably the best restaurant in Appledore. The global tapas style menu makes for a fun dining experience. There are some absolute hits like the beef skewer, Spanish sausage and manchego fries. The duck in lettuce was a total miss. Personally I would remove it from the menu and replace it with a different duck dish.

My Mum & I visited this gorgeous place last Monday for dinner. We were warmly welcomed, attentively looked after and the food, service and ambience was first class. It was a true dining experience, and I cannot thank the staff enough for looking after us so well. Thank you.

Fun and different dining, international dishes served for sharing like tapas. And a great selection of wine and local and craft beers.

An absolute gem, if you’re anywhere near you must visit the Yard. Delicious food, outstanding service in a charming venue.

Hidden Gem of Appledore. The food was exquisite, cosy atmosphere, jolly service and wonderful selection of local beer, Ales, wines and Spirits. Fabulous cocktails.

Best UK dining experience for ages. Excellent cheese and meat sharing platter. All local produce. On the ball owners good variety of local beers and ciders.
