A great restaurant in the Jewellery Quarter, with dishes that are beautifully cooked and well-seasoned. You can tell a lot of effort goes into the presentation as well as the food itself. The staff were attentive and took the time to explain each dish in detail, which was much appreciated. The standout dish for me was the scallop—by far the best I’ve ever had. It was perfectly grilled on the surface, yet soft inside, and the flavour was exceptional. However, the Wagyu beef was slightly disappointing, as it wasn’t as tender as I’d expect from A5 beef. The Big Mac (beef tartare) taste good but I personally things the crispy onion/ mushroom is a bit overpowered and make the beef itself taste less flavourful Overall, this is a very good restaurant with great value for money. I’ll definitely be returning to try their full course menu!

First time trying this restaurant after reading some very good reviews. Celebrating a wedding anniversary, we thought to try something different and it didn't disappoint. The food was delightful and varied with an abundance of different flavours. Can't fault the service at all with every dish explained by the servers. The atmosphere was very relaxed as well which also made it enjoyable.

Absolutely loved it, you guys have nailed everything. Fine dining but casual. You guys should be very proud of what you are doing. So creative with the dishes and flavours, try the big mac. What a refreshing way to enjoy fine dining!! Came here for my sisters 40th and it was exactly what we were, incredible food, not stuffy, alternative vibe! We all felt super relaxed here (including my parents who prefer a cheeky Indian). Big up to Molly who was a fantastic host, honestly the service was top notch from everybody. Everything was done so effortlessly, cutlery changed and water topped up and we barely noticed! Their attention to detail on our dietries was also really appreciated. We looked forward to each dish, and each dish beautiful - some of the best I’ve ever had! The monkfish dish and the peach dish were standouts but all were incredible! Couldn’t have asked for more ❤️

I dined here in May and was blown away by the quality of the food, wine and service. We had the tasting menu, one of the most delicious Chassagne Montrachets I've ever tried, an excellent Claret and some Chateau D'yquem. I've eaten several times at all of the michelin star restaurants in Birmingham and am mystified as to why the Wilderness doesn't have a star. It was, with only the possible exception of Opheem (and I emphasise possible), the finest food I've eaten in the West Midlands. I intend to go back as soon as I can afford it! Stunning

A true convergence of focus and passion, manifested by a team that know how to deliver. I had the 6 course taster with the A5 Wagyu option accompanied by an Old Fashioned or two, and it was sublime. Each course was beautifully realised and presented and the depth and separation of flavours was masterful. The whole environment was also a big winner for me. The aesthetic and soundtrack resonates with me deeply, which enhanced the whole experience. I’m very much looking forward to my next visit.

Hmmm… annoyingly disappointed with our visit and was hoping for more. Our dinner didn’t start very well with a 45 minute wait to be seated, even though we had a reservation. We were supplied with ample bubbles on the house, which while considerate, it didn’t help with the hunger. Some dishes were better than others, but some were just too over powering and lacked subtly. We appreciated being able to see the kitchen and where the magic happens, but overall it was very loud in the small space to the point we could hardly hear the wine and food descriptions. Maybe it was a bad day, but we felt on balance it was just ok, and because of that it felt over-priced.

Wow wow wow Came here for my birthday last night and perfection is hard to undertake but this is the closest to it. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with warmth and interest from the staff. I have anaphylaxis to cocoa and straight away I was told which drinks had some cocoa in and the fact they knew in advance so made a special one off dessert for me. Each course was presented beautifully with passion and explanation with some excellent banter Service to me is how you feel valued as a person for being there and getting an incredible experience. These guys nail it without overbearing or being fake. You are just so welcomed into their world Then there’s the music….. it was literally my Spotify on. A true gem in the jewellery quarter! Stunning British food with a twist, presented absolutely beautifully. The asparagus dish was one of the best pieces of cookery I have tasted in a very long time. The sticky toffee pudding with asparagus (!) caramel (who knew?!) wasn't far behind either. Whilst most dishes read as if they would be challenging to the palette in fact every dish was a perfectly constructed little taste explosion! Service was friendly, knowledgeable and unpretentious with staff seemingly encouraged to offer little extras to make the evening even more special. My only slight gripe is that the wine list, whilst very extensive, list was a little over-priced.

We have been to The Wilderness before and had fantastic food, so we were excited to try their Sunday Service. Whilst the staff and drinks were as normal, lovely, the food was terrible. The flatbreads to start, were glorified mini pizzas and the steaks, were like old leather. We were a group of 6, 5 had steak (sirloin, ribeye and flat iron) all asked for medium to rare. Every steak was overcooked and the meat was tough and chewy. One of us asked for another steak, which was graciously delivered, again overcooked and tough. Maybe they need to look at the meat supplier. The sad news is that it’s put us all off going back .

Whilst the food was lovely, it was not phenomenal and, therefore, was far from worth the price. Also, the casual rocky vibes (which are lovely) means that the service wasn't worth the price either arguably. Decent evening, but, again, just not worth the extortionate cost.

We were really excited about dining at the Wilderness but I have to say we were unfortunately just not blown away by the food. Service was impeccable though and the setting is really nice. However at this price point I would expect luxury and a couple of small things didn't meet that expectation (I.e. not offering any off-menu cocktails, and very basic toiletries) which doesn't match the quality of service or the presentation of the food, i havent included these asides in my review rating. Sweetbread was delicious, its a shame that many of the sauces across the menu tasted similar (creamy and pickly). We are fortunate to have dined at a fair few Michelin star restaurants for less cost and have enjoyed the food a lot more.

The Vendor name that will show on your credit card statement after visiting The Wilderness is ANOTHER BAD IDEA. Whilst you might think that when you get your next statement and have to pay for it, hopefully the memory of the food and the experience overrides that. Down an alleyway in the JQ, The Wilderness wants to be different to the other Michelin/tasting menu gaffs in Birmingham. And I think they get it spot on. The pop up that they had years ago near New Street was, from memory, a bit more ingredients focused (there was a pudding with ants on it) and had a tree in it. This place is dark walls, dark furniture, guitar music, but I think the food is even better. Every dish on Tasting Menu 2 (there are three in total) was incredible including beetroot ice cream, pig cheeks, mackerel, pigeon. Service was great, wine was a mix of stuff from £40 to a thousand (luckily I didn't succumb to that bad idea), and the whole night was fabulous for our 10th wedding anniversary. Loved it.

I just love the place. Great cuisine supported by excellent service. Staff are professional and v friendly. But obviously the food has to be the star of the show and be assured it is. The number and variations of dishes provided doesn't always mean you will love everything presented but that is an opportunity to experience alternative delights that to be honest you wouldn't normally choose. Have attended several times and cant wait for the next time. But you do have to save up to visit. PS I happen to love the music played also so another good reason to go!

We'd booked to go to The Wilderness a while ago but unfortunately COVID came along and ruined our original plans. We finally visited for lunch on Saturday and it's fair to say it was worth the wait. We decided to go for the ten course tasting with a couple of glasses each of the 'hacked' wines. Upon taking our seats we were each given a complimentary glass of Prosecco and water and our meal began. The mix of courses were fantastic; starting with crispy pig cheek with an apricot gel and taking in steak tartare, turbot and mackerel along the way. Highlights were a fantastic beetroot ice-cream served with a rich ajoblanco and a tremendous mushroom and 'bread pudding' dish which was like the best version of mushrooms on toast you could possibly imagine. Service was slick throughout, each course was delicious and the wines were great, particularly the Chardonnay 2.0 and the Vermouth. The meal wasn't the cheapest but the food, service, ambience and music made it all well worthwhile.

Wonderful team - so friendly and engaging! Cool vibe with an open kitchen - smart & intimate atmosphere. Menu was very impressive - some real stand out stars (Thai cod & mussels and the rhubarb & custard pudding were outstanding!). Whereas a couple of dishes just missed the mark (butters were borderline sickly and the Big Mac in a tin didn’t quite get as close to what it said on the tin). Whilst I enjoyed the rock music…I felt this was a bit too much for a fine dining restaurant - meant that we couldn’t clearly hear each dish as it was presented over the wailing guitar and thrashing drums. Staff were attentive and always happy to help and chat - a nice treat to meet the team of chefs too! A more detailed menu / card to hand would be nice to visually note each element of the dish. The decor is matt black and mirrors. At one end of the room is the kitchen - you can smell the smoke from the door. The music tends towards 90's indie rock, although they seem to do requests! The food was delicious. Our favourite course was the mussels - I didn't even know I LIKED mussels up until this point - but it was all superb, to be honest. Birmingham has great restaurants, a few with deserved Michelin stars—which is why it remains one of gastronomy's great mysteries that Alex and the team at the Wilderness do not hold one! There are few restaurants as individual and as styled, from the music to the staff dress, and the controlled chaos of an open working kitchen. It's rock'n'roll from start to finish. That doesn't mean there isnt classical skill on show though. From the expertly judged Curaçao-yuzu aperitif (which should be a House drink) to the exquisitely laminated pastry accompanying the soaring, stellar venison. A Breton would have been proud of that butter work in a kouign-amann. Every dish is delicious, playful and evokes memories. It is more than dinner. It is a culinary journey. Book now, and book again...

This was our favourite dining experience in quite a few years. The tasting menu was staggeringly well thought out with intense combinations of flavours. From the first bite to the final mouthful of desert an endless array of wildly original and different dishes kept appearing. We did the wine pairing flight which was so brilliantly considered that each wine somehow managed to complement the different elements in each dish. Absolutely spot on and well worth the price. The service and reception were very friendly, laid-back and knowledgeable. Though not cheap, when the experience is this good (plus it was my 50th), it has to be done at least once. Or twice. I'm afraid the quality of the cooking and wine did not live up to the £500 price tag for two. The loud music made sure that you could hear the description of the food, serving a fish course after a mutton one seemed an odd sequence. Also if you are going to play music loud then make sure it a good quality sound system in keeping with the intension of the cooking. 6 out of the 12 courses were good but 6 were disappointing. We've eaten at several michelin stared restaurants and this has been the most disappointing and with the exception of Alan Ducass at the Dorchester a fews year back the most expensive.

The servers were very pleasant and they accommodated my friend's last minute pescetarian request. Always a phenomenal experience, some of the best dining in Birmingham. There are dishes I'll remember for years to come with an unfussy service and atmosphere.

First time visit, we went to one of the collaboration nights, this one was with Andy Low n Slow. The staff were all very friendly and engaging. The drinks list was extensive with a number of not seen before offerings (Hacked Wines, Brummie themed G&T's). The food was varied and delicious - it's fine dining portions but at the end of the 'experience' you're very satisfied. I can't wait to go back.

The Wilderness is a Great Special Occasion restaurant where the staff are as good as the food and both are top notch. We went there for their tasting menu which I was ambivalent about but it was a charity event in aid of SIFA Fireside, which helps Birmingham's homeless. I need not have worried. The food was sensational as hopefully the pictures will indicate, but the staff were equally excellent as they engaged us with passion and enthusiasm which was reflected in the food too. Alex appears to have created a great team of committed individuals who make guests feel very welcome. The ambience was excellent. Perhaps because it was a charity night and Joe Lycett was supporting the event, there was a great atmosphere but I liked the playlist as well which ranged from Metallica to 80's classics. A great night. Expect to pay for the experience, but when it is this good, it is a joy.

Great food and atmosphere. In comparison to other fine dining restaurants, The Wilderness has that “underground” feel to it - as opposed to the overly stuffy service you’ll get at most tasting menu’s. You really feel like you are eating somewhere special; off the beaten track. One of my favourite restaurants, and a must visit if you come to Birmingham.

Dinner The Wilderness Rock and Roll fine dining. This restaurant is located in the Jewellery Quarter part of Birmingham. Its been described as dark and moody with open kitchen and pumping music. Well it is dark as the decor is black. Fortunately it was still daylight and the sun was shining through the roof skylights. We have been there at night and you might need a head torch to see your dinner🤣 Once sat at your table you scan a QR code to view the menu. As we were early doors at 6.00pm they have a 9 course tasting menu for £100pp. This sort of dining seems to be the norm now in restaurants of this calibre. It's a chance to try different dishes that you would probably not choose if it were A la carte. First course is a sourdough flatbread topped with caviar and trout. Next was sweetbreads with a very nice hot sauce. "Slushie" sorbet Orkney scallop in a Thai green sauce Cooked to perfection and delicious. Seaweed salad - would of not ordered this if there was a choice. But OMG who knew it would be absolutely flavoursome. Welsh Lam rib was devoured in seconds and we could eaten a bowl full of them. Cornish duck was one of the best duck dishes we have ever had,and we have had quite a few in our time. "Mr Whippy" think ice-cream with curry sprinkles. Lastly was life and death of a strawberry which finished off the evening perfectly. With its open kitchen you can watch Alex Claridge's lovely team at work. Service was friendly and brisk. The music wasn't that loud for a Saturday night. If you want relaxed fine dining without the faff, then get yourselves here. Review helpful please like 👍 follow thanks.

The atmosphere feels cosy as the place is quite small, decoration is quite simple but it fits well the theme and looks sophisticated. The service is impeccable. As for the food, we tried their set menu. It’s definitely a worthwhile experience but I wasn’t swept off my feet by everything. The desserts were a faux-pas for me. Overall I would definitely recommend it for the experience still.
