I stopped to get a coffee on a 15 min lunch break while working for our NHS frontline and was told rudely off by the owner for eating the end of my sandwich in their establishment while waiting tor my takeaway coffee!!!!! . I left without a coffee dare to say! Totally understand if I took a seat but i was eating the crust while waiting for coffee!! Will NEVER EVER stop again. Well done for being rude, I’ll be passing around your non-welcoming behaviour!!!

After a stroll along the canal we thought we’d grab a coffee and sandwich to takeaway. Husband asked for a ham sandwich to be told we’re only Vegan or Vegetarian and only do Quorn ham. My husband who is a carnivore politely declined!! I didn’t bother either so we both had a cappuccino and walked along to a bench to sit and drink them. I can honestly say it was the worst cappuccino I’ve ever had. I had asked for one shot but it was so strong it was undrinkable, and such a bitter coffee. Needless to say we won’t be returning.

This cafe has recently changed hands and is no longer linked with the canal. It is primarily a wool shop that has a cafe end which is only 4 tables. If you manage to get a table the service is exceedingly slow. Once seated waited 15 minutes to be asked what we would like , which was only 3 drinks and toast! then waited another 15 minutes before it came!! Three young staff, only 4 tables, manager taking up one table presumably for lunch break with a friend. Such a shame. This used to be a very efficient and pleasant cafe.

Having stopped here previously and had a lovely cream tea, we came up to Devizes, some 55 miles from home, for a walk on Saturday and before returning to our car came here for a drink. Because of Covid, we didn't want to leave them having to wipe down tables and chairs all for a drink, so we said we'd have takeaway instead. A board outside said toilets for customers' use only. I was refused access to the toilet and furthermore, told Costa coffee was just down the road and didn't care who accessed theirs!!! What a joke, we came to the small independent rather than a chain, tried to make it less work for them by not needing to wipe down after us and were then told to use somebody else's toilets. The coffee was stewed and bitter and we still had to walk into town to find loos afterwards. This kind of attitude will not bring people back to towns I am afraid, much less to independent shops. Not being able to access loos on a day out is becoming a total pain and we will consider what we do in the coming weeks as a result. I fulfilled their criteria, ie a customer, so where did I go wrong?

I don’t think I have ever been anywhere less friendly, helpful or polite. The girl serving was obviously new and didn’t know anything, not even what an Americano was…in a café?! The other girl was too intent on taking a break and stuffing a cake to even help, aside from a few hints shouted from the table. There were people waiting to be seated, people waiting to pay, and I was trying to place an order but yet the girl did nothing to help, too busy eating. Next I asked for change for the car park, was told they had little change so no, I then asked for an additional £1 to be added to my bill, I would pay by card and could they give me a £1 in change, again no but evidently because they were not allowed and was against tax rules….complete tosh, we walked out. Cannot recommend and would not return, which is a shame as it did look nice and is in a good location.

The gift shop has some nice unusual and local gifts. Near the canal so ideal for tow path walkers etc, or great if coming by car as it’s next to a big car park. Service was quick and efficient with plenty of staff. I saw some older posts boing critical of someone but that certainly wasn’t our experience. Also got the sense that some people were regulars that is a good sign.

As a family we agreed to meet here, but were treated to banging about of the coffee machine having our coffee slapped on the table with a brusque 'that's yer decafe' said in an offhand agressive manner. The tea rooms was lovely and nicely placed near the canal, but the toilet was in a state and quite laughable that on the door it said 'Please leave these toilets as you would wish to find them' my niece said, I'll fetch a mop and a bucket then, and clean them up if that's the case. Anyway instead of staying where we definitely didn't feel welcome we move further into Devizes where we had great service with chats and smiles from first 'The Bear ' who serve delicious coffee and then 'Cafe Nero' who were also all smiles and great banter. Shows how you can have a lovely venue, good coffee but can be put off by brusque and offhand service (as at the tearooms)

Visited the Tearooms twice this week. First time after visiting the Canal Museum, and the second time today before my canal boat ride. On my first visit, I ordered a cheese and pickle sandwich which come with chips, salad, and coleslaw. The reason I order this is because I'd never had on before. No pickles nor cheese that I recognized. Looked to have some kind of spread on it with what I'd call red relish. The place is quiet, the staff friendly and the food good. Today I had a brie and cranberry sandwich again with chips, salad, and coleslaw. It was quite tasty. The tearooms overlook the canal which can be quite busy with canal boats, canoers, kayaker, and people walking the old towpath. A really nice place to spend some time.

Situated by the canal wharf (as the name suggests) and fairly close to the town centre, this is a cafe run by volunteers from the Kennett and Avon Canal society. It offers both seating at tables and sofas and is quite popular with those taking a brak from their boats or just wanting to look at boats (there is a trip boat that goes from the whrf and a water point there as well as boats passing by). As we only looked in for mid-morning coffee we cannot judge the rest of the catering although there were some tempting looking cakes on offer! A comfortable stop (with good coffee) and a bit different from the usual coffee shops in the town.

The canal is briiliant, plenty to see and do, and if you are like us, and enjoy kayaking, then head west and advoid the locks. There is a tow path along side and a few pubs along the way. Bonus there is also a kayak entry slipway just a past the theatre off of the car park. Unfortunateley the day was tarnished as we visited the canal tea rooms above the TIC, luke warm coffee, stale cake and no hot food after 2PM (not even the "all day breakfast"), and staff that did not care. We decided to look elsewhere for food after leaving the best part of £10.00 untouched. Just a 10 minute walk away in the town we found Brogans, and what a delight, helpful staff, freshly cooked hot food and hot drinks and nothing appeared to be too much bother.

On the board outside these tearooms it says in large bold letters "Dogs Welcome". This couldn't be further from the truth, They are located by the canal path which is popular with dog walkers. I visited with my elderly dog who struggles to walk very far. After a long wait to order and pay for food I asked for a bowl of water for the dog...by the reaction I got I may as well asked if they minded if my grandmother urinated on the table. Initially they said they had nothing suitable to put water in and I would have to take dog back outside to where there were some water bowls by the canal (which were empty and too far for my dog to walk), I pointed to a pile of old bowls on the counter and suggested they could perhaps use one of those. The person serving initially said I would have to buy a bottle of water, until I insisted that tap water would be more than suitable. The person serving then started having a debate with one of the people in the kitchen and started being abusive about my request within my earshot, She then came back with a perfectly suitable plastic take away dish of tap water. However at this point I was furious at their wholly unprofessional service, requested a refund and left.
