The Trefnant Inn in Denbighshire

Steak pie was made from the fattiest meat I've ever eaten, the price was reasonable but any amount is too much when substandard ingredients are used... On the plus side my wife enjoyed her food so I added a star to the overall rating otherwise it would have been 2 stars, I'm sure you would find somewhere nicer nearby.

Food is very good, nice menu, and some super deals. Service could be a little quicker especially when busy. Would be nice to have the play area for kids back again.

I had quite the experience here yesterday. I live locally, about 5min away & was initially looking for some fish & chips but the local shop was closed. I have had take away of fish & chips from Coulton’s before, but it wasn’t great. So I decided to pop in to get something different instead. I ordered a chicken curry (comes with flat bread and wild rice) and some coke to go. I am writing this review to specifically point out the cold/ uncaring and blasé service I had from the waitress. I saw that the restaurant was fairly busy, maybe 40% capacity and there seemed to be only her on the floor, the slimmer girl behind the till was pleasant and accommodating same as last time. But the waitress on the floor was quite cold! I did ask if they do sausages to which the response was rather confusing all I heard was “not doing it at this time” or something like that. I have not been to a takeaway where my food (one the bread wrapped in foil & curry etc in plastic containers) were slammed on the table and told “there you go, here’s your take away..” and off the waitress strutted off. I had to sit there, wait, get her attention and ask for a carrier bag or something, surely I wasn’t going to carry hot food, in my bare hands, across the village? Is it too much to properly bag a customer’s food, to properly communicate, to properly say “your take away is ready, enjoy your meal” and or properly bag it? I was genuinely offended and chose to walk out as if I had opened my mouth it would not have been funny. We are all going through something and when you meet/ serve a stranger the bare minimum you can do is be kind. Literally that’s it!! In terms environment, it wasn’t exactly busy, ambient was so and so, a few people around. In terms of cleanliness, it definitely needs more attention, I didn’t use any facilities so can’t say in regards to toilets etc. In terms of food, the chicken curry was & tasted fresh and lovely to taste, I however ended up very gassy & uncomfortable overnight (maybe an ingredient I don’t agree with). The portions/ take away containers were rather small and could only feed 1 person who’d still be left hungry. Total expenditure was £15. I will not be returning in a rush as I don’t subscribe to a rude service that I am actually paying for. At my work place, we get complaints for the pettiest of things, which is exhausting so to go somewhere and be treated as a sub human OR as if they were donating food to me is pathetic. Good luck! P/s: If I didn’t say this; I’d be lying because I did think about it… I am not sure of the bad service or lack of it was in any way in relation to my race as a woman of colour but let’s not even go there. I don’t want to be one of those ‘race card pullers’. I digress.

Just popped in for a drink as we were passing. The cigarette bin was on fire as we walked through the door - told the barman about it but nobody did anything, it smelled absolutely horrendous. Inside the place looks extremely run down and stank of pee. We took our drinks outside, beer lawn is unkempt but spacious. Drinks were fine, prices fine, barman was friendly.

Went out for mother’s day expecting a nice meal to spend time with family, only to have my sunday lunch sent out much later than the rest of my family, not only was it late but I was served frozen potatoes and had the acting manager arguing with me that it wasn’t frozen despite not even checking it themselves. They had no care about potentially giving me food poisoning and never offered to give me a replacement, instead i was left with my frozen food that I couldn’t eat. Would not recommend at all.

Sone initial confusion about whether a Vegan meal could be provided and we nearly left, but a superb 3 course Vegan meal was pulled out the bag. I had a delicious tomato soup, a mushroom and onion pie, with chips, vegetables and gravy and a vanilla ice cream. Stuffed but happy 😊 Well done, I will be back 👨‍🍳

Food was wonderful and value for money. Attentive staff and good service.

I asked for chicken and chorizo ballantine, the thing was I never got to the chorizo the waiter told me it was the end of the ballantine there's no chorizo there, have never heard anything like that before, I was given a refund £2.20 an insult we will never go back.

We were supposed to be going to our friends 40th party but due to the water issue at the time in Conwy, the venue was cancelled. So we decided to go out for food and chose The Trefnant. Food was delicious and service was brilliant too. Even though it was busy the staff and food was amazing and the prices for 3 courses was super reasonable. Will definitely be returning!

The food is nice, but it’s a shame we only saw the food hygiene rating after we ate here 😂. It’s a 1 star food hygiene rating and the place was filthy, dirty floors etc. The place was ran by two very young people when we went there and they seemed to be doing great.

Can’t rate the food as we were so appalled by how dirty and run down the place was we took a quick exit. I don’t think we have ever been in a pub so dirty before and imagined the kitchen to be in the same state

Popped in after work for a cheeky meal with daughter , I had burger and daughter had sausage and mash both meals well presented and tasted great , burger was juicy and flavoursome with nice accompaniments, dirty fries nice addition great flavours, for desserts we had Eaton mess and waffle again nicely presented and tasted great , overall very enjoyable and really reasonable price , burger was Thursday special price of £10 which was excellent value , will definitely be eating here again , staff very professional and accommodating as well

Personally I wasn’t keen on the, what seemed to be, deep fried hotdog which lead it to having a crispy/tough skin. Saying that the food had loads of taste and the prices were incredibly good value. The staff were nice and attentive and seemed genuinely happy to be there. The pub has been around for many years and I hope the current occupants do well.

Sunday roast takeaway was very good 😊

Beautiful Sunday lunch. The presentation was amazing and the portions were too much for me (will order a childs portion next time). Beef cooked to perfection and the sticky toffee pudding was delicious.

Bar area not very accommodating for the locals!!!

The food was lovely and we look forward to our next visit. We can highly recommend the chicken and chorizo linguine, fish and chips, Oreo Eton mess and sticky toffee pudding.

Fortunely the food was alright. This was the only half decent side to our experience. No staff to be seen when we entered to greet customers, the restaurant had one other table of 2 yet after ordering our food still took over 45 minutes to arrive-.- (table of 3) We weren't approached again for the duration of our meal to see if the meals were okay or if we needed anything else. I had to find a staff member stood at the bar to ask them for one of our milkshakes. Milkshake arrived yet the staff didnt seem trained enough to even take our finished meals . Waiting on staff dressed in a hoodie, highly unprofessional and to top it all off they charge around FOUR POUND for a smidge of peppercorn sauce🫣😬 Absolute shambles.

We went in at the weekend and was surprised to not find only 1 other couple in. I ordered the mixed grill which had 25% off but was shocked to find the mixed grill only had steak,gammon and sausages. The 25% off must mean no chicken, lamb or eggs and with a normal price of £27.99 you would expect to have these as well. I also ordered the Diane sauce instead of the peppercorn sauce but after pouring the sauce over my food, I could swear that when eating my steak that there was peppers on it as my mouth was on fire. As I can't eat anything spicy. I did ask the waiter and she said the she had said diane sauce in the kitchen. Well there were some peppercorns on my plate. ?? So this was not my best experience of the restaurant 😡

We visited twice while in the area. Sunday dinner and a burger - both were exactly what you want in the meal. All cooked fresh without a big waiting time. Can't believe it wasn't busier, but selfishly glad we got served so quickly. Really glad we gave this place a try.

Best food around here! This place should be rated Michelin star for some dishes... Highly recommended

We were a party of 6 on holiday and, after looking at their website, decided this looked like a nice place to take our 86 year old mother for her birthday. Unfortunately, their website didn't accurately portray our experience. On entering, we were placed right next to the serving hatch. The decor was shabby, walls dirty and looked like the place hadn't been properly cleaned for a long time. We also requested a clean glass as there was a fly in it. We tried to see past this and hoped the food would have made up for it. But, to our disappointment, it didn't. 5 beef dinners...the meat was very tough and stuffing was hard. Veg was tasteless. 1 gammon...was so salty this was inedible. In all fairness we were refunded for this but waitress wasn't bothered about the beef being tough. My sister in law saw some of the food being served with bare hands and not utensils. One of the staff members was wearing gloves but the other wasn't. Customer service was just ok, staff appeared as though they really didn't want to be there. Overall very disappointing and we should have trusted our instincts and walked out before ordering but, didn't want to mess our 86 year old mother around and drag her off looking for somewhere else. The 6 of us would not recommend eating here unless major improvements were made.

Gluten free was a disaster my "pie' had no pastry whatsoever I ordered mushroom cheese and onion pie disappointed then ordered gluten free crumble and you guessed right no crumble disappointed yet again I am coeliac I cook with gluten free flour and gluten free pastry all the time no excuse sorry wo t be returning

Booked a meal for 6.30 turned up and told it was about a 40 to 50 minute wait for food it really wasn't busy no apology from the staff just handed a menu we just walked out we have always enjoyed eating here but they must up their game as there are plenty of other places to eat

Food was ok, we were sat right nxt to the pass looking into the open kitchen. Wasn't too keen to see the chef using one grubby looking tea towel to wipe surfaces & plates! A complaint was made by some diners, and the chef kicked off on the customers, shouting & swearing.....he grabbed his coat & walked out after a lot of arguing. Not what you want when you're dining out. The young staff tried their best & apologised for his behaviour. Sadly there didn't appear to be anyone in charge 😕. 20% was deducted from our bill, which was welcome but unfortunately we won't be frequenting the Trefnant again.

Myself and my partner had such an amazing meal here! The food and service was very good and the steaks were cooked perfectly!! Easy to park, very welcoming and superb food.

Stopped here with friends for lunch during our stay nearby. It was quiet and we were the only ones in the pub, but it did not detract from the excellent food provided. Good choices on the lunchtime menu at reasonable prices with very adequate portions. Gets busy in the evenings and at weekends we were told by the very friendly and attentive staff member who served us.

Absolutely disgusted to be charged an extra £1.00 for extra gravy. Never have I had experienced this before from a supposedly superior dining venue. The room was cold and uninviting. Not coming back.

Been to the outlet shopping down the road and needed food when we left there. Found this place as we both wanted a burger. Didn't disappoint, food was delicious, hot and filling so definitely worth a visit. Depending on the day of the week they have different deals on and a massive meat sharing platter on a Saturday which looked amazing in the photographs we saw.

We walked in noticed the piles of dead flies, trailing wires, dirty cutlery, uncleared tables, wall heater that had fallen off, the disgusting smell and so we walked straight back out. The staff only noticed us as we were leaving. AVOID.

The first time I used The Trafant Inn was, and I was really impressed. A group of us were staying local in an A&B, and this pub was within walking distance. We eat there on 4 nights out of the 6 of our stay. The £10 specials are a bargain, though I did bulk a bit at the price of a pint of Atlantic, £5.50. At home, same pint £4.50.

Meh. First impressions, place looked run down and dirty. Dead flowers in vases on all tables was strange. Dust and dirt on shelves, etc. My food was okay, my partners was pretty appaling. Nothing great, expensive for a sub par meal. Bbq chicken saved the review from being a lower score. That was great. Service was also really good.

Such a shame, place looks tatty water on the floor and blue hand towels on the floor in the toilet. Beef Sunday dinner was average and tasteless although plentiful. The starter was ok (pate) the pudding was pretty basic (crumble) crumble topping was very light and lumpy with solid lumps of crumble which didn't crumble besides crack a filling. Very expensive for the quality of food

Went there for Sunday lunch on 30th April 2023 and myself and my partner really enjoyed it. Loved the presentation and the taste of everything on the plate. Probably the best roast dinner we've ever had, top marks to the chef of the day👌

Very disappointed the halloumi burger was tasteless the bun was soggy due to too much salsa dip my partners meal was slightly better but won’t be returning as prices were expensive for what it was. The place looks dirty and unkempt the radiator was leaking with towels soaking up the water, the wallpaper was coming off the walls in places and just generally looked run down.

After driving past this place for a couple of years i decided to try it as it looks nice from the outside. All i can say is the owner should close for a week and get this place sorted out. My table was next to the kitchen door and there had been food dropped on the floor and this had started to go mouldy. There was food on the walls the door and everywhere. It wasn't nice to look at thinking how clean is the rest of this place when you can walk past this day after day and not clean it up. I went to the toilet and had to stand in a big puddle of something because there water all over the floor. This has been going on for some time as the wallpaper has started to come away on the other side of the wall. The staff are very pleasant but have definitely had no training by the management. The food was nice and i couldn't fault it. TO THE OWNERS. stop take a look around and think how much longer can i keep running my business in this condition and get a maintenance team in and a cleaner

A TALE OF TWO SITTINGS. We were quite relieved to secure a seat as it was around 8pm on a Tuesday evening. My good lady quickly saw her meal of choice Thai green curry although she was disappointed they wouldn't do 'half & half' but instead insisted she buy a separate portion of chips (which were actually frozen fries). After a brief and unfulfilling conversation I plumped for the baked chicken, mac & cheese with a separate portion of garlic & parmesan fries. This is were the experience splits into two - my meal although a little bland was acceptable however my wife (who is an excellent cook herself) described hers as disgusting, terrible and not what she expected at all. The curry contained no chicken and all she could taste was excess use of chillies which is bizarre considering thai green curry is a more subtle flavoured curry. We noticed afterwards there was a small and discreet 'v' next to the meal something my wife missed. Here's the real kick in the teeth, whatever can be argued about the meal when the waitress came and did the obligatory 'How's your meal' question my wife responded honestly as above disgusting, terrible etc to our disbelief she just said 'oh okay' and toddled off with not even an offer of picking something else. Christmas Dinner absolutely fantastic! From starters to coffee and mince pie ending it was stunning. Staff very attentive, chef Dan was great and had time to come out of the kitchen for a chat. A very nice change from our usual haunt. Well done Dan and Co.....

Was really excited to come here after seeing great reviews, but unfortunately things could have been better. We booked at 8pm (not too late) and was shown to our table. We were then waiting for around 20mins to order food, and after asking ourselves if we could order, we then ordered our food. It was understandable that it was very busy, and very hot, and we commend the waitresses and chefs for working in this heat. The place also seemed very understaffed. After around 35-40 mins we got our food. It was nice but the chips and onion rings were slightly cold, and it seemed they had been on the hot plate for a while. The food was nice but due to this, could have been better. Very disappointing for our trip away, but we understand how busy it was, we could have been paid a little bit more attention to by the staff and the food could have been better.

On Facebook the pub and food look amazing so was really excited to go but wow what a surprise it was awful the pub stank of drains so we asked to sit outside as it was nice and then we walked threw drain water to the garden but which was scruffy.. we then got attacked by wraps an flys probably because of the drain water that was everywhere.. the food came and the burger was so pink I couldn’t eat it.. I just got up and left

We went to Trefnant Inn this weekend just gone, brilliant service, quick and friendly. Food was amazing and so fresh. Chicken wings to start and the mains were brisket and chicken skewers 😍 Will be going back very soon, Thankyou!

Very disappointed with everything about this place. I read the reviews and had great expectations but it must have changed hands . Staff were miserable and food choice limited. Its totally out of character with the village

Went for lunch today..we shared a platter for 2 for £30 plus 2 small drinks...thursdays deal ...generous portions and exellent quality food ... good service and we will definitely be going back.

I won a compation for a meal and it was excellent . so decided we would call there last night after being to st asaph for booster jab and wasn,t dissappointed food and staff were great highly recommend the meat platter for 2 there was definately enough for 3

Too clinical, made to feel unwelcome, only stopped for a Coffee, stuck out of sight in the corner because we had not booked!!!

My husband and I just had dinner here after a day doing tourist stuff. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We both had a lovely meal. Hubby had rump steak and I had the beef brisket. Beautiful meal and well done to the chef. If I had one minor fault it was that my corn on the cob was over done and lost that juicy crisp but apart from that I can’t fault the meal. Homemade coleslaw was so tasty. Will definitely be back before we go home.

Great food, liked the simplicity of the menu. Food was excellent and the team were really friendly. They never stopped cleaning! Very well run. Noted the play area and smokers shelter that caters for all. Nice how it was divided into little seating sections. WC's even had a surprise! Lol. Had the brisket & chicken as main and was 👌
