The Travellers Rest in Wigan

The food really was out of this world and good value for money. the atmosphere was very nice and the staff were super friendly and even came and sung happy birthday it made my mum's day. if I'm ever back this way again I would certainly come again.

Booked a table the day before for 4 people and a dog for my daughters birthday, the girl on reception asked if no one has spoken to us about the fact we would have to go outside, i said no so she said she would get the manager. She said they don't allow dogs inside at the weekend and someone should have called us to let us know we would have to eat outside. This was the beginning of March none of us had jackets and there are no heaters outside, how they think it is acceptable to ask anyone to eat outside on a cold March night is beyond me. What made it worse is the young girl on reception was obviously aware that we were expected and that no one had called us so why didn't they call us as soon as they realised instead if waiting till we turned up, if they'd let us know even a couple of hours earlier we may have been able to book elsewhere, instead we had to go home and order takeaway so the birthdaywas ruined. The menu on the website has a picture of a dog and they claim to be dog friendly, they should put it on the website that this is not the case at weekends. Not happy that my daughters birthday was spoiled through no fault of ours, there was no real apology, just feeble excuses and told "why don't you leave your dog in the car" which is fantastic customer service. Will not go back.

No access for disabled,front and back steps.struggled in rain ,getting brother and wheelchair out of car and round to front of pub,should be a sign saying no disabled access.disgusted.

We throughly enjoyed our meal and the evening

Arrived as a group for a family members birthday meal. All meals were pre orders in advance (a week in advance). When we arrived, our table was still being laid, so we all stood in the cramped reception area (11 of us) waiting. Once the table was ready, we were shown through. It was cold, and to make matters worse, the patio doors had a gap at the top that was letting a constant cold wind blow through, so we all had to wear our jackets while dining. The waitress asked if we had pre booked twice since arriving to which we acknowledged. We then waited approx 45-50mins for food to arrive. So the pre ordered food was clearly not processed/ready. When the food came, it was ok. When the deserts were brought to the table, we were asked to move as the next cover had arrived for the table. Family members were still eating...... I mentioned about the wait at the start for food, and that has added unnecessary time to out sitting, I was met by shrugged shoulders. We waited for all family members to finish eating before moving. I understand there will be some form of generic reply from staff to my review. However, it doesn't change the fact that our experience was poor. I have a decent, honest profile on Google with hundreds of reviews worldwide, so this isn't me just ranting at a one-off experience. I'm late putting this review on as I was undecided but I am disappointed. I had fish and chips ( Last Friday) The fish was curled up and overcooked, that was because the fat was too hot I was told. The triple cooked chips were soggy and resembled boiled mushy mash. I was very disappointed as I brought a friend who said the same. Can we stop the fancy chips that don't resemble chips and just have chips. Can we have a straight fish at the side and not the fat dripping down as it's put on top of the very already soggy chips that looked awful. No need to write back as I won't be coming back, 😞 I wasted my money which makes me sad, and could wait to get home.

Our first time coming to The Travellers Rest and we were so happy with the whole outing! The food was beyond delicious, the host and the servers were lovely and attentive and the decor is gorgeous! We will definitely be returning :)

Visited 18/1/25 we had booked a table for 6pm arrived at 5.50 pm and showed straight to our table. Service was very efficient and professional at all times. Food was piping hot nicely presented and delicious. Well done team Travellers 👍

If you're looking for real food and not your pub chain quantity over quality, the Travellers Rest is definitely worth the stop. Excellent quality, nice menu and you won't be left hungry. The pub area is also cosy and welcoming for patrons and pooches!

It's a traditional pub with good food and usually an interesting mix of ales on offer. In the depth of winter it is really nice to be by a fire having a relaxed pint, but it is even better in summer when sitting outside in the garden. This pub offers both and has a lovely atmosphere.

Only one word: amazing! Will be returning soon with family.

We were visiting family today and popped in when they opened to see if they had a table available. Unfortunately they didn't, not surprising really at such short notice on a Sunday. As we got back to the car, a member of staff came out and said they could fit us in straight away on a table that was booked out for just under 2 hours later, if we were happy to be out by then. That was absolutely fine for us. The festive menu was really nice with two good vegetarian options. The food was lovely, really well presented and very good sized portions. The staff were very pleasant and attentive. We had a really nice meal. Thank you.

Just had lunch here - now headed home for some rennies. The hummus and the salmon were even heavier on the garlic than we realised at the time. Slow, mostly disinterested service, dirty drinks glasses. A joyless experience we won't be repeating.

Fabulous meal. Booked for Saturday night and the place was buzzing. Great atmosphere. Staff were super friendly and it just felt like a lovely place to be. Food was excellent and we particularly loved that meals were homemade, and the dessert menu so interesting and varied. We don't live nearby but would happily come again when we get the chance.

Service was friendly and helpful. The food was great. The only negative point was how hot the room was, but that was easily fixed by opening a window. I had the bacon and black pudding crispy stack on bubble & squeak, the beer-battered fish and chips, and the raspberry cheesecake, which by-the-way, was amazeballs.

Food: Others did enjoy their meal but personally found the rice very soggy and curry underwhelming. Service: food came out after a decent wait but the staff were lovely and apologetic for the wait. Atmosphere: it was very busy in the restaurant so nothing bad to say there.

Came in today with family chips under cooked tasteless fish and told staff about the people at next table as they was that loud we couldn't talk to each other but they did nothing so we left won't be using that for a Sunday lunch again

Popped in only 10 minutes before the kitchen closed. Would have been easy to turn us away. They didn't, they fitted us in. The manager, Kay, was excellent 👌. The food was excellent and the staff were excellent 👌. In all an excellent experience. We shall definitely be returning. Thanks 🙏

Last time i dined there i got burnt offerings, heard the cook there now isn't the best. Still a very bad establishment.

Visited for the first time yesterday and the food and atmosphere was perfect. Lovely beer garden sat in the sun enjoying great food and a cold cider nothing better. Won’t be the last time we visit and might even become a regular.

Had Sunday roast the beef was tough so wrapped it up for our cats ! roasties we’re solid and pale not cooked inside couldn’t eat them I pointed the spuds out to the waitress when collecting our plates as nobody approached to check if everything was ok she said she will let them know could have done with hotter plates as food wasn’t very hot noticed a few reviewers have mentioned this but looks like nothings changed veggies were ok but overall I didn’t think it was worth the price

Perfect place for either a quick pint or a sit down meal with a nice calm atmosphere. I had food which consisted of the pan fried chicken with blue cheese source served with chips and vegetables. As a side, garlic bread with cheese My dad has a beef stroganoff with rice. Lovely place and bar staff. Serving real ale and a nice Bier Moretti 😁

Staff EXCELLENT. Atmosphere and seating GREAT . I had cod and chips, fish overly battered, chips stodgy and fatty, I asked for fries instead but they didn't have any. My wife's meal of chicken and veg in a spicy sauce was excellent though.

Was told where to sit while having a meal beer garden was empty but we couldn't sit there ordered homemade curry n rice with fresh nan bread everything was frozen definitely not homemade won't be returning

Very unwelcoming bordering on rascist pub. Patrons in the pub unwelcoming, staff unfriendly, wouldn't touch this pub with a barge pole. I would give service and atmosphere a 0 if that were an option.

Great pub. Food is lovely. Dog friendly in certain areas, but you can only eat outside if you have a dog with you. Highlighly recommend.

Lovely food had 2 drinks main and dessert worked out at £35 each went on Friday at 6:30 not overly busy greatly recommend I had pork Diane the sauce was beautiful

We stayed in a local campsite and visited here twice during our stay. Especially a thank you to Mike, he made a great effort with us and went above and beyond. He brought our drinks out to us and gave us a warm welcome both days. We would definitely recommend.

We have had a family birthday meal tonight in the restaurant. We were a party of 8 Adults and 7 children and had the most amazing evening!! The staff were so wonderful, friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble and the food was excellent. I can highly recommend the restaurant and can’t wait to go back again.

Home made food very enjoyable.

Popped in for lunch today. They were very accommodating with our dogs and let us eat outside, in a nice booth. The selection of beer was lovely and the barman very friendly and helpful, great service. The food was cooked from scratch (increasingly rare in this area when most other pubs are chain offerings) and delicious. This pub is always a delight after a walk; glad to see it going from strength to strength.

Menu very limited in comparison to previous visits which admittedly were a few years ago

Had a meal with 8 other friends, steak and Ale pie with chips was good, but the veg was very poor. For pudding, went for the Cheesecake. Would not say it was not cheesecake that I would normally have. .

Excellent beer, food and service

Booked a table for 2 people online for 2-15 PM, arrived 10 mins early , was told table wasn't ready and would come and inform us when it was , 20 mins later we had to ask was our table ready ! Ohh yes it was they had forgotten to inform us .... then we had to ask could we order ... not as is if it was packed more tables empty than in use , my husband ordered small fish and chips which was ok ( cant really go wrong with that !) I ordered chicken breast with chips , seasonal veg and red wine garlic and chilli sauce .... chicken was dry, tough and over cooked, seasonal veg ... 2 limp pieces of long stemmed broccoli a couple of pieces of leeks and green beans ... sauce was just like garlic gravy , chips were the best thing on the plate ...we had to ask could we order a drink.. I ordered a 175 ml glass of red wine and I had to ask them to top it up as it was short measured ... the waitress I suppose she's the manager came to take our plates and asked if everything was fine , I replied "It was ok !! , she replied back "well your plate is empty ", i replied " yes i was hungry " and she walked off .... overall not very pleased with our experience there after hearing good reports about it ....

Service could of been a bit quicker but they were busy than usual food was a bit cold but it was edible 🤔

Went there this afternoon the liver pate starter ( sliver)was meagre to say the least for £7 and the accompanying toast was cold , and it was 50 minutes before we got our main meal all very disappointing, I told the person who served us but just said I will tell the chef. £63 with a couple of drinks, been before when it was good but won't go again, the only bright note is the barman in the main bar is great.

A last minute find during a brief stay in the area - lovely staff and great, reasonably priced food. Exceptionally busy so glad we booked but would definitely return.

Brilliant service, wonderful homemade food.

Starters ok, nothing write home about, but had check back from staff. Main… Triple cooked chips definitely not triple cooked, barely cooked just literally shown the fryer. Chicken very dry, peppercorn sauce was bland very creamy no sign of cognac. Hubby dinner, steak over done, Diane sauce bland, very similar to my peppercorn sauce only difference my sauce had peppercorns chucked on the top! No check back from staff. Wine was great and when waitress came to collect plates we explained and she was great. Offered desserts for free. Been here a few times before and loved it but today was very disappointing.

The beers here are always well kept. The garden is nice and the bar staff are nice. Can't comment about the food as last time we had it was under previous owners.

I have lived in the local area for almost 5 years and have always wondered what The Travellers Rest was like and today was that day. Having called in on the off chance it was always fully booked so I decided to pre book and I'm so glad I did. The Service was excellent we were seated on arrival and asked if we wanted drinks straight away. Our food orders were taken within 5 minutes and our starter in front of us within 15 minutes. The Whole eating experience was a delight from beginning to end with locally sourced food cooked to perfection. A very fair priced 3 course meal with drinks for £75. I would highly recommend a visit if you're in the area but book first to avoid disappointment.

Fantastic food and great service

Party of 4, seated in a lovely spot just by the window. Charming restaurant and great food. The king prawns to have as a starter are fabulous 👌 lovely chips, fluffy with a slight crisp, and a lovely mix of veg. We had different meals and all 4 arrived at the same time. We've been a few times and would recommend the travellers. Staff are great and attentive and the pub itself is cosy and welcoming. We love going here. The bar staff need a mention too, Tim is fabulous and remembers your round, is very professional but friendly, you always feel welcome. Thanks for another great evening.

Lovely pub and restaurant. Visited for valentines dinner and were not disappointed. Beautiful food, excellent service. In particular the scallops and meatball starters were exceptional. Will 100% be back soon.

Valentines Meal with the hubby! Wow from the moment we walked in we had superb service. Kay welcomed us on entering, offered drinks in the bar or at our table, as it was ready on arrival. We chose the bar as we were early, then were taken through exactly at the time our meal was booked. Orders taken and made to feel welcome. We had scallops with pancetta to start, lots of mmmm's, scraping our plates as we finished! Beef medallions with pate encroute for main which was beautifully cooked, the beef melted in the mouth. Much debating on how delicious it was whilst eating, greens and sauté potatoes were perfectly cooked. Waiting staff were attentive checking how our meal was, refreshing drinks throughout. We were stuffed, could we squeeze a dessert in? The top button undone we decided to share the passion fruit tart, a spoon fight ensued on who could eat the most quickly before the other ate it! (In hindsight we should have ordered one each). Overall a fabulous night, great atmosphere, great service, Lauren the landlady always makes you feel welcome and was as always attentive to everyone enjoying their meals. If you haven't eaten here before it is a little gem you must try! Fantastic food, great value and definitely worth repeat visits! Oh and they sell real ale CAMRA pub always an excellent choice, they do a wicked cocktail too!

Food was very disappointing. Waiting on staff (lads) seemed indifferent. Shame really because went last week and it was quite nice so came again. I suppose it depends which staff are on.

Went for my grandads birthday and I asked if I could leave £100 to cover the bill as a surprise and the team was so helpful and kept it a secret when grandad asked to pay. Food was great and a great atmosphere in there. Would defo recommend 👍🏻

I am sometimes reluctant to sample un-tried and tested places to eat, as I often find that the quality of food is either below expectations or that which I could myself cook. But making a second visit to this pub on 29/01/2024 for a Sunday roast (following a successful Xmas menu visit), I was really happy to find that my first impressions were well founded. The staff here are really helpful and attentive and the food is excellent. Like I say I opted for the Sunday Roast Beef option and can honestly say the Beef was melt-in-the-mouth tender. A good mix of potatoes, vegetables, punchy gravy with a side-order of cauliflower cheese, made this a delicious and fulfilling belly warmer. My wife had Chicken and Chorizo pie which she loved, especially the crispy pastry (No soggy bottom here). We went at 4pm on Sunday and there was still a steady flow of customers so I would recommend phoning first or make a booking. But despite being busy, the staff work hard and keep the service flowing to a very good standard. I would recommend The Travellers Rest without hesitation. A full car park seems that I'm not in the minority here.

We all had various different meals but we all had chips and every one of us had hard under cooked chips.

Table for 4 of us. Made to feel welcome. Lovely clean, cosy bar/restaurant. Plenty of room between tables. Service excellent, good choice on menu. We ordered different meals and everything was delicious and nicely cooked and presented. The tandoori chicken breast was outstanding. Chips a little chunky for me. Definitely come here again and recommend to anyone

1st time eating here and we were not disappointed. The food was amazing and cooked to perfection 😋

We went on Boxing Day and although the menu was a little limited in choices, the food we received was first class. The steak was superbly cooked and nicely seasoned. It didn't need a sauce but the peppercorn sauce was tasty. I also started with the bloody Mary prawn cocktail and that too was gorgeous. Service was OK, a little slow in taking used glasses but nothing too bad. Travellers Rest is a bit of a forgotten gem with Newton High St being the place to go for Indian, Chinese, Thai, Italian. There are a couple of pubs serving food there, but I would say the Travellers is the best pub grub in the area. Looking forward to coming back.

Amazing food, attentive staff, and a warm atmosphere.

Had the winter soup which was ok at best. Then the chicken which came with no sauce, was dry without. The cheese board looked thrown together. Lovely place. Lovely staff. Lousy food. Felt awful within hours, spent rest of day in bed.

Food ok,no disabled access or disabled toilets,disgraceful,my dad is 85 with a walker,had to use the ladies toilets so i could make sure he didnt fall,was very upset and embaressed.

Honestly, don't bother... Terrible food. Aunt bessie microwave mash I'm sure it was on the Christmas dinner. 1.5 scabby slices of turkey. Lovely side of cranberry sauce in a very presentable McDonald's type sauce pot (sarcasm). Roast potatoes that literally wasn't roasted at all, I'd say at a push part-boiled! Basic chain pub style food that offer 2 meals for £15 with a pint, but full price instead here (£25 for 2 terrible courses). So yeah, dont bother.

Six ladies from school in 82 met for the Christmas meal and it was the best by far

A family group of 10 arrived (pre booked), we had a little chat time in the bar and then shown through to the restaurant area and our table. The tables were all nicely set, and as orders were discussed cutlery was exchanged to suit. A few of us had soup which was very nice and accompanied with a little warm loaf. The mains were all very nice with the usual envious looks, I should have ordered that, the salmon was lovely. The deserts arrived and looked great, good portion sizes too. All finished off with teas and coffees. The staff were attentive throughout despite how busy it was. Thank you very much for a great afternoon, no complaints at all, not even grumbles or gripes, all the food was great and served in good time for the group.

6 of us met yesterday for pre Christmas lunch, and everything was perfect! Friendly staff, excellent choice of food,( festive menu) well presented and delicious. We'll enjoyed it very much. I can honestly say that is the best roast dinner that I've ever eaten when dining out. We will be back!

I was a bit dubious when my cousin suggested the Travellers for our pre Christmas catchup because the last time I was there wasn’t the best experience, sticky tabletops, bog standard food, inattentive staff and tired decor. However, she booked 3 of us in for lunch today and what a pleasant surprise. It’s been completely refurbished and we had the warmest of welcomes. There was a great atmosphere and the food was delicious, (it was the festive menu)I have no hesitation in recommending the Travellers, we’ll certainly be going again.

We came here with our in laws for a our christmas meal as we havent seen them for a few months. We had off the festive menu All main meals where cold we sent them all back and when they brought them back out some off the food on the plates where still cold but we ate them as No point sending them back again to have the same thing happen. When we paid we never got asked by the lady who took our payment how everything was or even got a sorry. When they brought the 2nd lot off food out they was less on the plates than what they was when they brought out first plates off food and it wasent a christmas dinner the 2nd time. The food wasent worth the price we paid at all. Such a shame was it was ment to be a nice afternoon seeing our family.

Abruptly greated by staff. A 5.30 sitting for a large party of people. The soup arrived, Luke warm. The Christmas Dinner was swimming with gravey and very few vegetables, plenty of mash potato. Nicely arranged on plate. Despite pre-ordering the food menu two weeks in advance, they still managed to miss two desserts delivered to the table. A 17 minute wait time for 3 scoops of ice cream, and a cheese cake. Deliverd with no apology. Other people from our party had already all finished their desserts. And before I had finished we were told we would have to vacate the table. As the next party was due to arrive. Non of the food was worth the £28.99 per head we were charged. Coffee was not offered.
