One of the best places to go for pub lunch and a couple of drinks

The portions are huge, I had the beef and ale pie and it was excellent. There's a lot of history in this pub, very interesting.

Hoping to put this on our shortlist of venues for a special meal /drink for a important event in our lives found it a bit dark and uninviting , waited 35 mins for our meal,beer choice for me wasn't great and my meal was a let down ( partners was good she said) steak and kidney pudding should have soft suet pastry not a rock hard can't get your knife through it shell .. go easy on the microwave warm up chef keep your eye on the timer ..when asked was ' everything OK informed the young lady no and of the problem let's see if it gets back to the kitchen team Will probably again .. as I can see it could be really good

We had a wonderful time for my daughter,s 60 birthday ,so we have booked again for my husband's 80 th can't fault it

We often visit Boars Head for lunch or a drink while out for a walk so I thought it was the perfect venue for my husband's 40th Birthday gathering. We had about 80 people seated in the outdoor huts, with the heaters on it was lovely and warm. Hayley and the gentleman making our pizza's were fantastic catering to any dietary requirements or special requests. The bar staff were friendly, efficient and kept the tables tidy. We all had a fantastic day.

Been to boars head a few times and not once have I had a bad meal. The staff are always friendly and accommodating. There is a lot of choice on the menu which makes it hard to choose a meal as everything is always so good. I would recommend to anyone to come here.

Me and my wife Ali have eaten here a few times both lunch and evening meals , fabulous food and company , great atmosphere and friendly staff . We have been in a few times just for drinks and again a great pub and local for us , The boars head is wheelchair friendly and dog friendly so if your just out walking the dog why not pop in for a pint . If you haven’t been yet then give the boars head a try you won’t be disappointed.

Lovely pub food in traditional setting. Very busy when I went.

We t for Christmas eve, I ordered the soup and mushrooms tagliatelle, I got the soup but was cold and my main was mushroom spaghetti, which was not alot of , would say child portion, for the money was not worth it , would have preferred the ordinary menus as they were coming out nicer and faster than Christmas meal , never again did not feel special was just a ordinary pub grub meal and was £40 per person ,not worth it

Enjoyed a nice lunch. Food was good and the service was quick. Had the piri chicken burger. Didn't realise it was a breast instead of a burger style. Had a try of the cheese and onion pie and that was nice. Dog friendly venue.

Had a family Christmas Brunch today at the Boars Head. The food was outstanding and presented beautifully. The five of us enjoyed every single course including the lemon sorbet. Three of us had the full Christmas turkey and gammon and two had the steak. Everything was cooked to perfection, the Christmas pudding needed a little more custard for me personally and I was obliged with a second jug. Yummy!! The trio of deserts went down a storm profiteroles, rhubarb crumble and custard, cheesecake all delicious. Outstanding value and the service by the waiting on team was very efficient. Compliments to the chef, and we will be back!! 🎅. Well done everyone!!! 👏👏👏👏

Service can be slow but food especially the vegetarian burger are absolutely delicious, great portion size. A lovely cosy pub and lovely that dogs are welcome too. Love coming here

Always great. Janet and Tony are wonderful. Staff are always helpfull and accommodating. Take our care home residents and was even treated to a Christmas party organised by the lovely Janet one year. ❤️

Called in today( first time), didn’t fancy a full roast, so went for something lighter, as was looking forward to a dessert. Omg it was large and delicious , no room left for dessert. Defiantly be calling in again , I went for seafood platter with chips, husband had steak pie .

Head and shoulders above a lot of pubs for service, dog friendliness, cleanliness and food quality. Been twice now with a party of 6 never had a bad meal. This is a lot better than pub grub but without all the pretentiousness. The sirloin cut like butter! We need some pubs like this is the south of Wigan instead of Standish hogging them all haha

Lovely cosy pub indoors with a lovely outside. The outside seating areas are divided into benches in alcoves with tvs and heaters. Perfect for the euros!

This place has gone ridiculous in its prices, they are still showing the old menu on their website and the prices have gone up drastically. Soup at lunch has gone from £4.75 to £7.50 at lunch. Disgraceful

Had a meal there today at lunchtime with family. Very good food and service. Highly recommend.

Not cheap for pub food but the quality of the food and the portion sizes were great. Equally great service. We hadn't booked but it's probably advisable if you want to be guaranteed a table - especially on a rare sunny day. Our spends include a few drinks, too.

Went for an impromptu lunch here. I live locally but never had chance to go, before today. All staff were lovely and very attentive. OMG the food was AMAZING! and we all had something different. My only complaint, i burned my tongue trying to eat my pea and ham soup so fast coz it was so delicious! Lol Will 100% be returning!

Fab lil place, found accidentally, but, stayed & had food

Food has gone down hill lately. Can't make a complaint as it's edible, just not as good as it was. Tried 3 times recently think it's time for a change. It's a shame as I like the place and staff are lovely

Meal for 4 yesterday, great service, food was good, tomato soup for starter, cheese and onion pie for main. The small portion of veg with the main was undercooked unfortunately but the cheese and onion pie was pretty good. Thought it was quite expensive for pub grub but everyone seemed to enjoy it.

After a wonderful walk up Rivington we settled down in the Boar’s Head for a Sunday roast dinner. It was just what the doctor ordered. The quantity of food is a serious commitment - reminiscent of the hill climbed earlier in the day, the flavours do not disappoint with friendly and efficient service. Accompanied with a few drinks and the din of a pub atmosphere we managed the walk home to sleep off the day’s activities. Fantastic end to the day.

Stopped off here for a late lunch we have never been in before the food is excellent will definitely come back 🙂

We booked here again this evening for 9 of us. You get loads for your money, quality of food is excellent and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I love the fact we can take dogs too and we will most definitely be back. Probably the best dog friendly establishment I have eaten in.

Great service by the young lady’s serving . Food spot on really good chef here . Gammon with both egg and pineapple was perfect . She had prawn salad which was massive with lots of succulent prawns . Highly recommended

Food was fantastic. All servers were really friendly. Little mix up with our order, probably due to how busy it was, but all was dealt with perfectly. Fantastic BOGOF offer on pizzas. Really enjoyed it

Nice little surprise of a local pub/restaurant. Nice countryside feel to it, friendly staff and service. I think it's dog friendly too. Some seating may be a bit cramped for people sitting down to drink but there's more seating with larger tables if you are eating. They also have a little wood burner and they have live acts as this was advertised on their Facebook page. I had the roast carvery for my meal, very nice! I had gammon but for a couple of quid more you can have 3 meats , gammon, chicken and beef. You get Yorkshire pudding, mash, potatoes, veg and a pig in blanket! I can't comment on other dishes but I do recommend going here for a nice, quiet Sunday roast. This pub/restaurant is busy and friendly and is a nice stop off for dog walkers or if you're stuck for ideas on a lazy Sunday

Went for an afternoon meal with friends, 9 of us. Everyone said the same, it was excellent. The food was home made and hot.

The food is incredible as is the special offer price. The staff are amazing, there was 11 of us and service was amazing

I needed to find a venue for after a funeral. Everyone who lived in the area recommended The Boars Head, unanimous in their enthusiasm for the best food they'd tasted and they're never having had a bad meal. We went to book after a difficult day sorting out the deceased estate and asked if they could squeeze us in an already packed pub. They did and we were blown away by the food, the staff and the price. We chose the deluxe buffet for after the funeral and there are no words to describe the freshness the amount and the quality of the banquet provided for us. Landlady and landlord looked after us all evening and made a sad day very special. Will definitely make this our new go to eatery. Thank yo to everyone.

Had a superb meal here and I can’t recommend this place enough for proper good pub food. Huge range on the menu and wonderful service too. Look forward to returning when next in the area. The Cheese & Onion Pie is the best I’ve had in the area.

Visited here on Friday for a works lunch with the boss. Absolutely first class from the minute we entered, entrance decked out brilliantly for Xmas with gentle Xmas music playing in the foyer. Greeted at the bar by a member of staff who took us to our table,took our drinks order and left us to look at the extensive food menu. Team member came back with our drinks and took our food order... we ordered a 8oz burger and the fish and chips. Both freshly cooked, home cooked chips and a plentiful portion. This pub was a great find and can't wait to return to take advantage of the outdoor area to watch sport. Thanks to Janet and the team

Dined here a few weeks ago… ordered steak and ale pie with hand cut chips and fresh veggies - got frozen French fries with frozen peas. What a disappointment.. offered us a £1 discount. What a joke. Won’t be going back. Being called a troll as my review wasn’t to Janet’s satisfaction.. now I know why the staff were rude !! They’ve watched Janet at work …

I should've worn a looser set of trousers . Proper portions. I loved every bite. I can only recommend the fish and chips. I'm definitely going back to try more of the menu.

My wife and I have been to the Boars Head several times over the years but I have to say that this time I have just had one of the best, well made and presented Club (Chicken, lettuce under bacon) sandwiches I've had for a long time at this cracking little pub, nothing fancy just good food done well. Well done Chef and the rest of the staff 👍
