What an amazing place, the rooms are super cosy and well equipped with ironing board, hair dryer, tongs and a good supply of either freshly ground coffee or regular instant. The large roll top bath at the bottom of the bed was perfect to warm up after a long cold day whilst watching tv and the separate shower room was ideal for convenience. What made this place special though was the restaurant, all of the staff were super friendly and the food was outstanding. I had a special soup of spiced carrot with belly pork two evenings on the trot, had I been staying another week it would have had another 7 times. The first evening I opted for the Cajun chicken breast with coconut rice and pak Choi for the main course, it’s so easy to over cook chicken breast but a good sign of a decent chef when it’s cooked to perfection retaining juices which it came as no surprise that it did and did not disappoint, the second evening I went for haddock scotch egg and the fish pie which once again were absolutely superb. Amazing food, cosy rooms and proper friendly staff, do not pass this place without visiting.

What a lucky find. We’ve driven past here a number of times, but never thought to drop in for food. The tomato soup was the best I’ve ever tasted, and I’ve had a lot of soup! The hake was delicious, and everyone else was delighted with their dishes. Portion sizes were all perfect too. I think the bill came to £230 for four adults having starters and mains, three kids meals, bottle of wine, a cocktail and a round of soft drinks. Not cheap, but for a monthly Saturday treat, it was money well spent.

Stayed for 2 nights, lovely room, staff are excellent, lots of parking, lovely seating area outside. We took the bus into Edinburgh, walk to bus stop was about 10 mins max, bus took approx 50 mins and cost £2 each!! We had a Uber back twice, approx £20 one way. We ate dinner in the restaurant, amazing food, excellent, attentive service, warm welcome. Breakfast was wow! Water, orange or apple juice, tea or choice of coffees, food was amazing, best scrambled eggs ever. Would highly recommend for either just a meal ro definitely a stay, we loved it.

Toward a family wedding at nearby Dalhousie Castle, we opted to stay at the more affordable Sun Inn. Their amazing team treated us like old friends, literally going the extra mile, and wowing us daily with their award-winning food.

Had dinner here last night, was very disappointed. We had been many years ago and the food was fantastic but this time we recieved a burnt burger (roll and burger burnt) and cold, bog standard Sunday roast. Also got our starter order wrong. Sad to say we won't be back. We didn't say anything at the time because it was for out daughters birthday and didn't want to spoil the atmosphere.

Used to be a big fan of this place but it feels as though it has changed. Not one to complain at all but the staff were not very quick nor welcoming, there were many things we couldn’t order from a rather small menu in the first place as they were unavailable. And the prices for desserts were very high, especially for the portion sizes. Not usually what we’re used to when we go to the Sun Inn, but may have just been a bad time.

Used to come here lots years ago so came back since I'm back in the country and it's gone quite a bit downhill. Had the special which was essentially lamb fingers, and for the price there was almost no lamb, half of one of the fingers were mostly carrot. The pea and barley "risotto" that it was on was very under seasoned and quite bland. The jus also looked messy poured all over, presentation would be drastically improved in there was a small serving jug so I could pour it myself. The cheeseboard was supposed to come with 6 cheeses but came with 4 and a butter and was also missing the quince jam and celery. The brie cheese still had a bit of plastic on it as you can see in one of the pictures. Out of the 6 options, 3 were fish, which is a bit much for such a small amount of options. The staff were very friendly and helpful, which is where the second star comes from. Probably won't be back unless there's some changes, the horse shoe in edleston is a far better choice for a gastro pub.

I absolutely loved my 4-night stay at the Sun Inn. All employees were very friendly and welcoming, the complimentary breakfast was wonderful and the ambience of this historic country inn was just fantastic. I know that the location on the peripheries of Edinburgh may dissuade some from staying here, but I found public transportation into the city very convenient. There is a bus stop located a brief walk up the road from the hotel, with service on the route three times per hour. I got into Edinburgh's Old Town each morning within 35 minutes. The Sun Inn is a world apart from the big hotel chains; the whole establishment and lodging above a historic pub was really cosy. There's a lovely garden area, the pub/restaurant serves great meals and the rural surroundings are charming, with a forest trail next to the hotel. The complimentary breakfast was a highlight of my stay. Guests are invited to choose any breakfast item from the pub's menu -- from traditional full Scottish breakfasts to porridge served with fresh berries. Overall, this cosy country inn was great value for money and offered a memorable stay.

This review is solely on the restaurant. This was our first meal out with our newborn. We thought we’d come and spend the night £40 voucher we were given. For starters I got the pork belly which I felt was okay but maybe lacking flavour. The noodles and veg that it came with wasn’t the most appetising either. For main I got the monkfish curry which was an improvement. The portion was large and the curry was tasty. The rice was well cooked and the shard that it came with was very crisp and accompanied well with the meal. However, £17 for this curry is very expensive. I suppose they can justify it because of the monkfish. My wife got the fish and chips. She enjoyed it but in my opinion the batter looked too oily and was lacking crisp. Some might say it was wetter than an otters pocket. Chips were okay but required seasoning or dipped into the mayo. Certainly not worth £18 for a fish and chips. For dessert we shared the knickerbocker glory which not bad and again £8 for it is quite steep. The service was great and the facility is lovely. However, my only gripe with it is that the baby changing is in the female toilet. I was planning on doing a change whilst my wife finished her meal but we ended up waiting after being told by a member of staff that it’s in the females. The lady said it will be fine if I go in the females but I didn’t feel comfortable with this. What would single Dads do in this situation? When my wife took her to get changed she commented on how cold it was in the toilet which isn’t a great environment for changing a newborns nappy. Overall it was nice getting out the house but we were left a little disappointed.

We visited the sun inn for lunch Sunday 23rd June 2024 I was very disappointed the menu was awful there was very little choice for celiac and few vegetarian options the service was slow and the food when it did arrive was Luke warm at best the roast beef was as tough as old boots the food is overpriced for what you get I most definitely wouldn’t recommend it I don’t think I’ll ever go again

As always the service in the restaurant is a bit peculiar, you could say rustic... :-) But the food is simply divine. Hats off to the chef, everything was absolutely delicious. Prawn cocktail was as fresh as a daisy, fish &chips crispy and light (and huge!), the monkfish curry with coconut rice, a home made poppadom and tangy mango relish an absolute delight, and the deserts, particularly the ice cream, creative to say the least. I keep bringing visitors here, and am not disappointed. Will come back! (Sorry can't say anything about rooms as didn't stay here)

We had a very enjoyable meal for our anniversary. I had the cauliflower starter, curried monkfish and prawns and apple crumble with homemade ice cream. Bad car park (over flow car park even worse), staff couldn’t care less and looked miserable, waited 30 min to order (had asked 3 different people if we could order but kept being told someone else had to take it), no period products in bathrooms when needed in an emergency (as is Scottish law) and no bins to dispose in either. Food was nice and good value for money but really slow, unfriendly service and lack of amenities made this an unfortunate visit on Father’s Day. Wouldn’t go back!

Nice sitting area outside but be warned that you will get hit with a 10% service charge for the staff bringing your drinks outside for you. No signage at the bar informing this. Are staff not paid for this? Looks like the owners are trying to recoup money at the expense of customers. What? Have you had a large tax bill or something??

Well I don’t have one bad word to say against this place. Booked it as it was cheaper than Premier Inn and I’d been for lunch last time I was visiting the area. First of all the room was amazing… couldn’t wait to get back to it to chill out. Went for dinner nice and early in case it was slow… should’ve have worried, ordered mussels to start then the lobster & crayfish gratin, so thought I may wait. I didn’t wait very long at all… just enough to know it was fresh. The mussels were amazing, coming with a nice thick piece of bread to soak up the amazing sauce left. The lobster was equally as amazing x went back to the room to run a nice bath & pop the tv on. couldn't get it working, reception came to help quickly, still couldnt help… so i got moved into another room. omg! if you can afford room 6… go for it! its stunning! shame i hadnt brought my swimming stuff 😳 Would highly recommend!!!

Wonderful large room and excellent service. Complimentary breakfast included in our price. I ordered multiple breakfast dishes, not realising it was free and was about to pay. However, i was told it was Complimentary. I may have been a bit more Conservative if I knew it was free choosing only one dish, so I was surprised at their generous "complimentary breakfast". Perfect for drivers, maybe a bit difficult without a car, 35 minutes to the centre of Edinburgh and 5 minute drive to the nearest train station with regular trains to the centre of Edinburgh costing about £5 single.

We met friends for lunch here today, 19 May. Convenient location for us. We have been here several times before but would hesitate to return due to the food quality and poor value for money. Positives: Lovely tablet with coffee. Good location. Bright extension. Good cauliflower cheese. Good bread. Negatives: Disappointing roast beef, two thin slices of beef like sandwich meat, well cooked and not medium rare. Inedible Yorkshire pudding. Brown bread and marmalade ice-cream - where was the marmalade? One small scoop for £3. Service not very warm or efficient from some staff. Entry way tired, flower planters full of weeds. Some seat pads were filthy. So disappointed today. Used to be a treat, now feels like a Harvester.

Terrible recent experience. Served water in a jug riddled with black mould (yuck!!) and glasses still covered in other people's lipstick! Errors happen, but the worst part was the blasse I don't care attitude from the staff. Cakes were dry and meh, tasteless things not made fresh in house to any kind of high standards. The quality has fallen massively - one to avoid these days...

The food here is absolutely phenomenal. The staff were so accommodating for example I asked if my coconut monkfish curry could be made with more spice, and it came out with the most beautiful kick to it. The food was genuinely 5*. At first we thought the service was a little slow but as soon as we even tasted our starters we all agreed it surpassed expectations and was well worth the wait. The steaks were melt in the mouth, cooked to perfection, and the tomato kids pasta was stunning. My 4yo had wanted to meet the chef to say thanks for her pasta and he happily came out..nothing was too much trouble. Fine dining quality with a homely atmosphere.

Pleased to find The Sun in open & still serving, we both ordered the fish pie. It was appox 40mins we waited for our meal. The portions were significantly reduced since our last visit but it was tasty all the same. Unfortunately, within an hour of leaving The Sun Inn, mum had to run to the toilet with an upset stomach & in the next half hour, I was doing the same. Mums stomach was still upset the next day. We hadnt eaten anything since breakfast time that morning so we could pinpoint the problem to our evening meal. I phoned the Sun Inn to report this & was given an apology & told nobody else had called in with this problem, that the fish is delivered fresh every morning & it would be reported to the manager. Smaller portions, bigger prices & some form of food contamination is enough to put us off returning.

I met a friend this morning to have breakfast and it was my first time visiting this place, to say service was bad would be an understatement but not only that they dont have any brown sauce in the whole place? So i ordered the wee one breakfast which is basically 1 sausage 1 bacon rasher 1 egg but i swapped for black pudding and 1 piece of bread which did'nt have beans or anything that was not Dry. At very least they could have made sure they have some sauces for ppl to use. When the girl was asked about the sauce she basically just stared at us like i was alien. Anyway food was returned and they still attempted to charge for the breakfast item. Unreal.

Driver arrived an 1hr 40 mins after ordered with coldish food that needed reheated again.
