The Square Diner in Ards

Waited 45 minutes for a cod, scampi and 2 battered sausages. Went and asked how much longer I’d need to wait and was told another 5-10 minutes because they where busy. Asked for a refund and got no apology for the wait. Would avoid at all costs in future.

We had lunch here yesterday and having been here before we knew what we wanted. My wife had the home made pastie and chips which was as she said was super tasty. I had the battered cod which is my favorite. Really fresh and cooked to perfection. An enjoyable experience. Thank you. We will be here again. Jim and Lorraine.

Reading the reviews you’d think this place was incredible. Sadly, it was pretty awful eating here. Not only was the food practically inedible (so much grease) the staff were unfriendly and inattentive. A faulty teapot meant my mother in law was nearly scolded - their answer was to offer another pot of tea to be added to the bill!! Small tip: when you’re at fault, you offer a replacement for free, not charge again! In a small town like Ballywalter, where everyone is so lovely, this place was such a let down with grumpy service and bad food. Go to Firebox over the road!

Took 30 mins for a fish and chips with a tiny sized portion of chips for a medium cod and chips. Good if you have time to burn and wait.

Another trip along the coast. Stopped for lunch. Ordered a small fish supper. The guy said did I want a kids portion. This was agreed. The food came very quickly and as currently under restriction had to be a takeaway. For a kids portion, it was big enough and well cooked and fresh, not frozen fish. Worth a call in.

Going to this chippy once a week from March 2020, lovely food and very helpful team. Place is well laid out and very clean. Menu is massive for a small chippy. Brilliant.

Haven’t been here for a while. Staff were wearing masks,good start. Again my favorite is the battered cod,really really good and crispy batter,super size portion. My wife had the home made pastie and chips,again excellent,very tasty. Servers were pleasant and efficient. Good lunch time experience, good food. We have take away regularly from The Square Diner. The food never fails to satisfy - always fresh, hot and good large portions. We have also eaten in on numerous occasions and have always have an enjoyable experience with helpful staff. You will not regret getting your fish and chips here - delicious!!!

Another visit,another good meal. We have reviewed this restaurant before and always really pleased with the food and service that we have received. Battered cod excellent and the home made pastie really good. Reasonably priced dinner and we noticed that they have now their Christmas menu on offer. Good price and you can bring your own wine with no charge for bringing your own alcohol. This is a good diner and well worth a visit. Good chef that enjoys giving you super food in his diner. We had lunch here today. Clean and spotless diner. Service was good and the owner was very helpful when we were ordering our food. The battered cod really good and the Ulster fry was top notch. Toilet was very clean and wheelchair friendly. Good food and very reasonably priced. Thank you for a very pleasant lunch. Jim and lorraine.

My girlfriend and I visit The Square once every few months on a Sunday for lunch and I can honestly say the food is always excellent and we have tried quite a number of items on the menu now! The service is normally good, it is a family run place and they are friendly and welcoming, it can be a little slow at times but we are never in a rush so no problem for us. A nice little addition to The Square is the cakes and desserts which you wouldn’t normally associate with a chippy. They are superb and a nice treat if you can manage it after your lovely chips!! Keep it up guys and we will keep coming back!

Ate in once. Not great. Slow service. Bought take-out twice. Not great. Last night's take-out, chips had obviously been re-heated. Gotta be fresh guys!

Have been here numerous times for lunch, sitting in and takeaway. Food everytime has been good with good sized portions. Friendly staff and owner who always says hi everytime I'm in. Nice clean restaurant with a nice bright atmosphere. Would recommend.

I love going to the beach and my best buddy lives just outside Ballywalter so I go in here regularly. Boss man Ryan can't do enough for you wether it's just a coffee or a lovely big meal. Fish and chips are lovely as is a simple coffee. Well deserved 5 stars.

Ordered chicken burger with cheese and onion rings and it was horrible. Despite advertising a battered chicken fillet burger I received a chicken fillet in breadcrumbs served with 3 greasy onion rings and in a brioche bun rather than a sesame seed bap which was also advertised. No Salad or sauce served in burger and a handful off chips on the side. Also ordered was a roast beef dinner, the roast beef was tough and chewy and vegetables were not peeled completely. Mixed grill was the last meal ordered and again was just about edible. Sausages are off very poor quality. Place smells like a bathroom and tables are not regularly cleaned. Extremely slow service and terrible quality off food. Would not recommend. £29 for a meal you didn’t enjoy is ridiculous. Staff didn’t even know who had ordered what. Female staff was rude and quite oblivious to anyone around her. Better chippies elsewhere.

Called in to the square for a business meeting first an older woman snapped Would it be eat in or take out. We sat in then asked questions about the menu and where told to either order it or not. Why we stayed I have no idea food sub standard at best

Was recommended try The square Diner called in for carry out Haddock and chips when I got home portion was Huge lifted the Fish and fingers covered in oil The amount of Batter out weighed the Fish The roof of my mouth was so greasey Even two cups tea couldnt remove it and had To go ly down as felt ill from taste of grease

Pottered with religious pieces the moment you arrive, we found the tiled floor very greasy and slippery.

I have given the square diner a good review before. We went for lunch here today and again was not disappointed. I had just the battered cod £5, because a fish supper here is a large portion of food. My wife had an 10 piece Ulster fry which was really good,not a greasy spoon type,no oily residue on the plate. Also very reasonably priced at £5.30.I saw a couple of Sunday lunches going to other people and good grief they would have fed two men and a wee boy for £10.95 which is good value. Nice food and nice staff building a bit cold and food took a bit long to come but when arrived it was fine. Price was fairly average but you get what you pay for.

Love this place food great and staff friendly.. have been 4 times and it never changes food is lovely. Sunday dinners are the best 😊

Ryan the owner is very hands on and a great chef and server, nothings too much trouble for him. Great full sodas and fries and so much more. Fully recommend.

Mejor pescado de todo County Down recién preparado y maltratada y si no te gusta la empanada se puede tener preparado lo que sea que le gusta. Así no fry fantástico bocado uno de grasa vió este pequeño tesoro familiar está bien merece una visita. Bien hecho Ryan & co mantenerlo y el servicio al cliente es excelente. Los precios son muy razonables y si quiere llevar su propio vino/cerveza, etc. no hay botellas. La industria local de soporte y pruébalo, no te defraudará!

I visited the square diner today with my husband and daughter. First ever visit. The food was amazing , the staff really friendly and the dinner was spotless. Can highly recommend the mixed grill which I had. My husband had the cod which was massive and the fish was pure white My daughter had rib eye steak which was cooked to perfection. They have a really good menu anything from pizzas to roast dinners. Something to suit everyone s taste. Would highly recommend a visit. I will definitely be back.

Vamos en cada vez que están abajo. la comida es siempre recién hechas mientras estás allí, y es delicioso. La familia propietaria son los más agradables que se reunirán. La pavlova es para morirse xx no pase aquí sin duda es el mejor lugar para comer en kilómetros a la redonda.

Stopped for haddock and chips waited a while but you expect to as its all cooked fresh we have had many meals out but this was the best fish was monster eat until i was fit to burst its delish battr gorg cant say enough lookin forward to trying more

Had a visit today at Square Diner, Very nice place to eat, good portions and all. Can recommend this place to eat, nice staff, will be returning again in the very near future.

Mi madre y mi padre siempre fuimos de aquí, puedo ver por qué! He estado varias veces. La comida es estupenda, el personal tiene tiempo para usted y nada es demasiado problema. El lugar es impecable y cuando pides una bebida caliente con su comida que viene con la comida, no antes o a mitad. El lugar es impecable y siempre tiene clientes. Ryan y su madre hacen un gran trabajo en un pequeño pueblo, si alguna vez vas a llamar ballywalter y tomarse una prueba no te arrepentirás. Hay aseos de cliente y muchos asientos. Cinco estrellas.

He estado aquí muchas veces mientras en la caravana, el servicio es un poco lento, pero vale la pena la espera, a la tierra que comida decente no es demasiado caro.

My wife and I eat at Square Diner at least once a week. The meals are always served with a smile. The Stff are fantastic. Never are we disappointed.

This wee place is fab!it really doesn't look like much from the outside but it definitely is true don't judge a book by its cover! Food is so nice and such good valve for money! Staff are friendly especially Ryan!I will most definitely be back can't wait to try more on the menu!!

I regularly have take away meals from The Square, Ballywalter, always excellent quality and a very friendly service from the Chef. Tonight, fish goujons with delicious chips, absolutely gorgeous, was able to share with 3 people as the portions were so generous. Highly recommended restaurant with lovely staff and a great village atmosphere, especially nice for a carry out meal with the views to the Irish Sea in the summer months around the corner, and also great with their extensive, varied menu including stew for the winter. If you are travelling around the Co Down coast it is worthwhile to drop into this place, a great ambience of a bygone age, with the American diner atmosphere and music. A real treat and worth a visit!!

Had an enjoyable takeaway from here. The portions are huge, especially the gravy and curry. They come in the same pots as a Chinese meal! The chips are good, the goujons were the size of half a fish and you get loads! All the food is prepared fresh after you order. Make sure you're hungry!

Friendly family Diner. Have been visiting The diner for a long time and can honestly say I have never been disappointed. When it first opened there where hicupps, e.g. heating but that has been sorted.

Visit here often and yet to be disappointed or unaccomodated. Sunday roasts and Ulster frys are the best on the Ards Peninsula, tried and tested! Nothing beats a brisk walk along Ballywalter beach, topped off with brunch or lunch on a Sunday at Ryan's. The staff are friendly and there is nothing that is too much trouble. Just last week my boyfriend tried their Belly Buster (see photo) and he's given it a thumbs up.Definitely worth a stop if visiting the Peninsula and Ballywalter has adequate parking facilities round the corner.

We thought that we knew where to go on the 'Ards Peninsula for the best fish and chips until we found The Square. Just beautiful!

We have eaten here a couple of times its a lot bigger on the inside than when you look through the window. I had a pizza once and a Sunday dinner the other time both meals were very nice but there was quite a wait and the service was a bit dull. The first time we didn't know it was cash only and the owner was very trusting in letting us go to the cash machine locally and return with the money. Needs a sign on the door saying no debit cards. Not every one would come back with the money lol.

This diner was very dismal and cold, probably because it is like a very large basement. The food is great though and the owner is a very friendly chap who deserves a good review. Haven't been that direction recently but would stop for a meal or a takeaway option when I next am.

This is a sit in and takeaway American themed Diner. We had the most perfectly cooked chips and the freshest battered cod and haddock, that was served in a nice little box for takeaway!The staff are very friendly.Will definitely be eating there again!
