Passage to India in Ards

I think the quality of food has improved, I ordered a chicken vindaloo with rice and a garlic nan It was fiery hot which I like and the chicken was tender and moist, the only negative was the nan was slightly over cooked.

Fantastic meal at Passage to India. When I visit Donaghadee I always try to fit in a curry night here and try to order something different - service is superb, food is always fresh, delicious and consistently good. This visit was no different. 11/10 👍

This place was a big surprise. Relaxed timing of dining due to staffing levels which suited us nicely. Chicken Tikka nag puree was a highlight as was the vegetable pilau. Kashmiri naan really well seasoned but not too spicy. I recommend this place. Price very reasonable too.

Waiter was cheeky and I am pretty sure she went to a well to get our water since it took 45 minutes. Owner told us we couldn’t sit even though we booked and food was ok sauces were rank 😡😡😡

Extremely nice staff. Food was ok flavour wise although nothing special. Strange texture, not sure what they use to thicken sauces.

Have written before, this place is brilliant. Looking at bad reviews 1. The décor is poor. I think this adds loads atmosphere to the premises. 2. Service is slow. Well thats because they are soo busy, with carry outs, just relax chat and drink your own wine or spirits. Friends from London say its the best Indian they have ever had!!! Please tell me where you can get a sit in two course meal and BYO for £15 each???? Captains table?

The surroundings are a little bit 1975! Don’t be put off. The food is wonderful and the staff are always delightful. Remember to bring your own drinks.

Awful… 2nd order in the last 2 weekends with missing items.. no apology.. took 1 hr both timses for missing rice to be delivered.. (Chips onion bhajees Nan all cold both times by time the missing stuff arrived).. no apology.. asked for refund 2nd time as was totally fed up waiting almost 1hr 20mins for original order them a further he for a rice that was missing.. everything was binned by this point- was freezing .. all chips Nan bread etc! Rand shop AGSIN Was apologised to and told refund on its way… the missing rice turned up 1 hr later with £2 refund!!! Rang back to shop… they apologised Shein, said refund would be sent- that was 3 hrs ago! We as a family of 12, eat here regularly, every few weeks.. snd there is ALWAYS SOMETHING MISSING! I’d be ok, if they didn’t repeat it or even replaced the u reheatable food, is chips, Nan, bhajees (as they go soggie in the microwave) .. but EVERY TIME we’ve been told it’s an error, we’ve accepted it and next time.. it happens again.. so again.. half an order, wait a further hour and reheat what we already have from an hour ago! Rang back to restaurant and said £2 refund was NOT ACCEPTABLE.. they assured me the rest would be returned by delivery driver asap.. 4hrs have passed and nothing! Total disgrace! We spend on average as a family £100 per week here.. big loss to them for the sake of either cross checking, apologising again - with replacement of the unreheatable good or a refund! None of which we received. This isn’t a one of, it’s an every week issue! So that’s us moving on.. Shane cause food is nice, but service from management and organisation is horrendous and you’ll waste ur money on items you’ll not receive !!

Visited with my partner this evening. Hadn't been in about 5 years so was hoping it was still as good. Couldn't fault it all. Food was great and good service and very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back.

I have eaten here a few times lately & never left a review. To be honest I don’t know why. These people ,in my opinion how to cook great Indian meals. Nothing to much bother for them. Please don’t be put of by the decor. May not look great. But very clean. I don’t think it’s their property but doing the best with what they have. The prices don’t reflect the quality. Really very nice on many occasions. A little slow. But they are very busy( that says something) . Allow at least 30 minutes.

We use this restaurant fairly regularly for takeaway meals. However lately we have found it very hit and miss and unfortunately more miss than hit!! Tonight was particularly bad with every element of the meal bad. Sauce was tasteless, chicken chewy and not fresh tasting and the bread like shoe leather. All had to be binned. This is such a shame because when they get it right it is delicious but we do not want to be playing a lottery each week with our food so unfortunately we will just have to try somewhere else!!

It's been many years since I had food from Passage to India, but it won't be long before I go back. I didn't order in advance, which was entirely my fault and I had to wait quite a while for my order. As I sat in the area for collections, it was reassuring to see how many people had their act together and had phoned in an order. The system seemed to work really well and people came in an left quite quickly. Takeaway food, like everything else has become expensive, but our bill was considerably lower than if I'd gone to other takeaways in Ards, or Bangor. Our food was excellent, tasty and I can't wait to order (in advance by phone) again!

I have eaten out of Passage to India several times now, I absolutely love it. The chicken tikka masala is the best I've ever tasted. Everything cooked perfectly. Staff are so courteous, helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend.

Worst chicken tika massala I've ever had. Was overly sweet and a strange orange colour. This is disappointing, as all other items were pretty decent, although not properly heated due to staff leaving it to go colder while they messed about with the takeaway etc. Staff were also arguing in the kitchen, right next to the customers, and overall the service was pretty poor, won't be going in there again.

Decent Indian meal close to home and bring your own drink so all good . All four enjoyed their meals but would have liked a portion the same size as the carryout food but hey ho no biggy .

First time trying this place, Ordered a chicken bhuna, pilau rice, plain naan and poppadoms bhuna was quite bland, not much flavour from it, but the chicken was good quality. Forgot to put my naan bread in, only discovered it, when I got home, was too far to go back to say anything.

Always get a good meal. Very tasty.

Ordered from Passage to India for the first time in ages as we used to enjoy their food. We were told the order would be delivered within 45 minutes but it took over an hour and a half! I called the restaurant after almost an hour to check there were no issues with the driver finding our address and was told the food hadn't even left the restaurant yet. Called again after another 40 minutes and I was told the food would be with me shortly. I said this was unacceptable and was just told "there's nothing I can do". We were understandably very annoyed by the time the food finally arrived after almost 2 hours. We weren't offered any kind of discount to apologise for the delay. Won't be ordering from here again.

Have been a customer here for a while and occasionally the odd item was missing from my order but as I live 8 miles away I let it go but did tell them on my next visit of my experience! However last Friday my order was 3 items short (£7.50 in total) so I phoned them to ask them to sort it out. I was passed from pillar to post and each time they pretended to not understand. Eventually I went back and insisted on a refund. I then went to a different Indian outlet and discovered that Passage to India portion sizes are at least 50% smaller for the same price. My advice?? Buyer beware!

I left a great review in 2019, I've been using this place for sit-in and takeaway for years, always been great, however, recently we got a take away and it was awful. My partner always loved the chicken tikka masala here, it was exactly the same every time, this time it was nothing like the usual, she couldn't even eat it, my dhansak was poor as well. I am assuming it has either changed hands or got a new chef. Unfortunately we will have to try elsewhere now. Shame!

We have been using passage to India from it opened in Donaghadee and originally started going when it was a take away in knock. I have always found the food is always high quality and consistant, sometimes you have a little but of a wait for the food but that's because it's always made fresh an I would rather wait for my excellent meal than it being rushed and horrible. We drive from Belfast for a take away now the restaurant is closed due to the covid restrictions but I can't recommend it enough and very reasonably priced too

Visited this place on sat 28th nov for a carry out,I noticed male and female staff members behind the counter not wearing masks and also caught a glimpse of the kitchen with the person doing the cooking also not wearing a mask ,not good ,what's to stop them sneezing covid into the food

This was the 1st time we used this restaurant it was recommended to us. We waited 3 hrs having to keep phoning to ask where our order was!’ We eventually. got our order and it was freezing!! Even after I took the freezing cold food back which took me 5 mins by car!! the owner refused to come out and address the customer and was down right ignorant. This was our 1st experience with this restaurant the 1time we tried them. We are absolutely discussed by their service and customer service. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, absolutely down right ignorant. The girls on the phone also told me that they have a list of complaints all saying the same. Very poor ignorant customer service. Anyone looking an Indian I highly recommend The Bengal n Donagahdee 12 New Street Donagahdee. The staff were so lovely and very friendly and our food was hot, beautiful and £6.94 cheaper for the exact same order!!

Slow service doesn’t even come close!! 2.5 hours and still no food!! Called before 2 hour mark to be advised just waiting for delivery driver to return, 35 mins later told he hasn’t returned yet, so cancelled order!!! 5 mins before the 3 hour mark their driver tried to deliver our order!! Crazy

Excellent food and service with a smile. Prior to eating here last night we read the reviews and of course noted the slow service comment. So we went prepared with plenty of wine, we really enjoyed sitting at our table taking our time over popadoms before the fab main arrived, in this new era of COVID we highly recommend the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing evening out without feeling under pressure to give the table up :)

We have lived in donaghadee for 15 years and used the passage to India for 14 of them! We now know that when you order at 630om to collect it and told to come in half an hour that we don’t go until an hour and even then we usually have to wait. 3 weekends ago we made an order to be delivered and it never came and when we rang we were told it would be another hour. We asked why and they had overlooked the order. By this time it was 9pm so we cancelled it... Last weekend we thought ok we will try again but this time we will collect .... ordered at 6pm told 715 to collect.. our friends went down for us to collect it and had to wait until 815 for it to be ready! Unbelievable! So tonight we ordered food at 530pm thinking surely it will be delivered as they said an hour ... I just phoned at 715 and was told another hour for delivery .... like seriously! Obviously they are taking on more orders than they can cope with.... we will go elsewhere from now on... we were trying to support our town but not if the service is like this... beware!

10 out of 10 I'll be coming back and so will the rest of my family and friends also the staff are kind and helpful my son has a nut allergy and they were great with it I'm very happy and satisfied

We frequently go there, food great, atmosphere great, statt great, value unbelievable, and BYO, cant believe other reviews, "the service is slow" well thats because it is so popular, and really busy with take aways. Take your time and enjoy the night. "The decor is poor" i like that, it adds to the atmosphere. I have friends come from London, frequent Indian diners, and they say this is the best Indian they have eaten in. Please dont make to many changes. £12.50 now but still great value.

First visit and would go back. Good value and nice relaxed atmosphere. Staff very friendly and you can bring your wine/beer with no corkage charge.

Party of 5 arrived for birthday party . 1 hour later waitress comes for order . Sorry but we have only 3 portions of rice left . Wait - no rice left at all ! Ok so we order a carry out of rice from the Chinese across the street for delivery you couldn’t write the script

Called in on spec on a busy Saturday night (Red Hot Chilli Pipers were playing!) and were lucky to get a table. The restaurant might look a little tired around the edges but the good was first class and so reasonable. It's BYO and we weren't charged corkage. The standout though was the service. Everyone was happy and smiling and nothing was too much trouble. I haven't had such pleasant service in years. The blonde waitress in particular stood out as exceptional but everyone we met was great. Definitely a place to cone back to!!!!

Myself and my partner visited here on Sunday night after being told it was an amazing restaurant. We sat for ages without being served while one girl served at the counter, and had to run around doing several jobs while another woman leaned against a wall doing nothing but talking to her friend. The starter was so small and the main course was very disappointing definitely will never be back.

Usually have a great meal from this place, but tonight we waited over 2 hours for our delivery, rang after 1 hour 20 mins to be told the driver couldn't find us ( he didn't pass by here ) so after giving my number to the girl on the phone and asking will the food be made fresh and be hot she reassured me it would be, we then got our food all in all 2 hours 20 mins, the food was freezing it must have been the 1st 1 they sent out as it tasted like it was reheated.I won't be ordering from here againYou need to shake that girl who answers the phone, and whoever sent out reheated chips and freezen meat with a salad that was only good for the bin along with the nan bread.

We went in to order takeaway and waited for 35 minutes in the not overly busy restaurant. Food was average at best. Dopiasa was bland and the chicken chat purée was nothing like any other I’ve had. Very disappointing, not worth the wait.

Haven't had a bad meal here yet, and the £10 deal is fantastic value. Would be so easy to get the carpet cleaned (it is actually sticky in places) and give the place a quick makeover, however this still doesn't stop me going as the food is so good.

My wife and I went here on Friday night for dinner. Arrived at 6.45 having booked for seven. We were seated close to the reception with the loudest phone I have heard which rang constantly for takeaway orders. We could barely hold a conversation. The starter arrived in reasonable time and was ok. The dishes then sat for 20 minutes before they were lifted. Our main course then didn’t arrive for 40 minutes. I was just about to complain when it arrived.No excuse except that takeaways seem to take preference over restaurant customers.The place is badly in need of a makeover.I will definitely never be back. Avoid at all costs.

I've had deliveries from this restaurant for the past 5 years and the quality of food is excellent! No hesitation in recommending, and I believe they do a great sit-in service, with BYO, which sound great!

I’ve eaten here before but tonight it as awful. The kebab had more lettuce in it than meat. For £5 I expected more than 2 ounces of meat and a mass of lettuce. Very disappointing experience.

The place doesn't look so good, needs updating but the food is great. They do meals deals during the week and it's BYO so you can have a cheap night out

Haven't visited here yet, but the takeaways are to die for, place orders on a very regular basis and the food is mouth watering every time.

Came here with two friends after hearing good reports about there £10 deal. You are able to choose any starter, main, rice and a naan for only £10. Portions are excellent and the food is also great quality. This deal runs all week apart from Saturday's. Restaurant itself is pretty dated but it's no big deal. Service was efficient and friendly. All in all 3 meals and 3 drinks in an Indian restaurant for 33.30 is an absolute bargain. Will definitely be back and will recommend.

the food from here is really tasty we always get carry out the food is always lovely really good size portions my favourite is chicken masla loads of sauce there rice is always freshly cooked the only down side is the sit in area is very small and no atmosphere but would definitely recommend the carry out

Food is very tasty and really good value for money. The £10 dinner menu gives a choice of starter, main along with poppadoms, nan bread and choice of rice all for an amazing £10. The only night this isn't available is Saturday.

Ordered a chicken vindaloo instead of my usual jalfreezi as the food here is usually quite good, had a look through the curry to find the potatoes which weren't actually in it. Pretty sure aloo means potatoes so on calling back with the problem I was told it doesn't contain potatoes even though in the menu it says "very hot cooked in thick sauce with potatoes". The customer service was horrendous and instead of being told they would make the curry correctly in exchange for the wrong one I was told there was nothing could be done apart from mention potatoes next time and they would be put in. I shouldn't have to mention it, its in the menu, and most people know aloo is Indian for potato. If I asked for Bombay aloo would that come with potatoes or just spices? By the time I got to the food it was cold and went in the bin. Will not waste time or money ordering from here again.

This is the best place for a takeaway curry I have had since I left Birmingham nearly 20 here ago. Chicken tikka madras with keema naan is the best but their mixed kebabs take some beating as well.

We eat at the Passage to India around once a week and absolutely love the place ,the staff are very friendly ,Rana the owner is a gent.The £10 dinner deal is great ,the byo a brill bonus .Yes sometimes the wait for food can be quite long ,but the wait is worth it ,the food is fabulous

We've ordered from here a few times and have found the food to be average compared to some Indian restaurants we've eaten from, but there are no other Indian takeaways that deliver where we are so Passage to India is our only choice. Ordered food last night which took over two hours to arrive. I phoned several times only to be fobbed off. The girl on the phone was very rude and in fact just hung up on me when I told her to cancel the order as it was getting too late. No apology from them or anything. I left a review elsewhere and the reply from Passage to India was "yeoo, rave on". They clearly don't care about professionalism or the fact that some of the silly people they employ are going to lose them business.

Good food, good value with big comfy seats but remember it's 'bring your own alcohol' which can be purchased across the street.

We would use this restaurant twice in every three weeks usually as a carry out. The food is of the highest quality and very reasonably priced. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. The reason we use it for a carry out is that we live close by. The decor of the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. It is small but very clean. Parking is very easy in the Main Street outside. For an Indian meal it would be hard to find better anywhere. My advice would be to book a table or phone in your choice of meal for a carry out as collection time is usually 30mins.

Really nice tasty food......Indian. under supported so no problem sitting in : ) & bring your own wine. Its a lovely wee meal out. Take the chance,,,,ill be amazed if you don't like the food.

Have only had takeaways but the food on both occasions was an oil slick. I had a vegetable biryani which was ok but the veg curry it came with was grey matter floating in dense oil; totally inedible. Terrible food but ok second time when specifically complained about the oil. However, not good enough to go back. Restaurant very grubby inside.

Passage to India does need a wee bit of a makeover, but the food is consistently fantastic, and the staff are super-friendly and efficient. Most of the business is carry-out, but the sit-in restaurant can be very busy at weekends. The menu is quite extensive, and every dish I have tried is well prepared and very flavoursome. I recommend telephoning an order in, but when busy you may still gave to wait a little. But it is definitely worth it.

Got prawn madras takeaway and fried rice water was left on plate after obviously the fried rice had been kept warm Never again can fry rice better myself Awfull

We regularly get take away and have always found the food to be of a high standard. Well priced in this range.

Well priced good food and they do meal deals which are excellent value. But if you want a lot to eat stick to the menus and enjoy. The staff are minimal but pleasant and will advise you of meals. Front of house staff are not Indian. Good for parties.

The interior is old and very dated but the food is good quality, they are reasonably priced and they are b.y.o, including soft drinks etc (if you want). The food is tasty with good choice.

Have been several times to either sit in or get a carry-out. The food has always been very good but the wait, especially for take aways is always massive but that will not stop me from going. This place would be so much better if the staffing in the kitchen was sorted out and if the two ladies front of house could count !

Went with a pal for a meal. During the week it's £10 for popadom, any starter, any main and rice. Absolutely brilliant food and friendly.

We had house starter to start with. Our main were of such high quality standard and was delicious and he gave us a side dish to try for free. This is a very economical restaurant with very high quality tasty menu. I give this restaurant 10 out of 10.
