The Cod Father in Ards

It's not debatable that this is the best chippy in Ards!

I can’t recommend the chips this place do highly enough! They are a cut above anywhere else and like nothing I have tasted for many many years. Great quality food. Generous portions and always pleasant and chatty staff. Many places have simplified their offering by buying in most of their ingredients/produce and with that comes a mediocre level of sameness which is anything but good. This place cares about what they are putting out and they welcome the additional work involved in cutting/prepping their own chips and produce so that it is noticeably better than the rest. I’m glad I live in Dunmurry. Otherwise I’d be the size of an even bigger house 😊

Got a Fish supper and have to say it was the nicest cod I have ever tasted it’s powerful the chunky chips are taf to will definitely be going again and again

This was our regular and we had no hesitation recommending it to friends. Portion size was always generous, fish very good and staff friendly. Due to illness, it’s been many months since our last visit and we were really looking forward to it. What a let down! The shop was just opening when we ordered and we collected it 15 minutes later. The fish was very dry and chewy and not edible. The chips were also well below standard, with nothing I can think of to commend them except to say they were cooked. Sadly, we won’t be back.

Our first visit to this very busy take-away. Good sized portions, delicious cod and chips, reasonably priced.

My collegues and myself eat here regularly. Best chicken burgers in Ards, served with lovely crispy salad and sauce of your choice. Great value as well compared to some of the extortionate prices elsewhere! Highly recommended 👌

It's the go to chippy in the town personally, been going since the day the doors open. Can't say I've ever faulted the food yet! The chicken burgers alone are unreal not just with size but taste.

Called in yesterday for dinner . We both had a fish supper. The fish was massive and a very large portion of chips. Very Tasty we will be back again.

In for the first time on the 05.06.2023 and will definitely be back. This visit was on the back of a recommendation and I have to say it was absolutely beautiful. The battered cod was exceptional. The batter was light and crispy and the chicken goujons were the nicest I have ever eaten, again the batter was light and crispy. My partner had the chicken fillet burger. It was massive and also agreed on the batter itself whilst saying it was the best they have had. Great customer service and very reasonably priced.

Always lovely to deal with and one with young familys you wouldn't need to order loads as they give you above and beyond any other chippy in ARDS. Things are tight for everyone and this truley helps. X

I have been going to codfather on a regular basis but last 3 times the fish and onion rings have been cremated.As not a local , Killinchy, it is to far to go back to get them replaced. Are you using different oil or fryers up to high to meet the demand of the orders? Please try and get back to when the fish and onion rings were edible?

Delishish food, friendly staff and fast.

I recall this restaurant serving great fish from day one. Their choice is great and all reasonably priced. Staff are friendly and attentive, although access to the shop and parking is particularly trying during bust times of the day. Taxi parking can be particularly frustrating when drivers at the nearby depot, abandon, rather than park their cars. Many times I just decided to drive on, finding a more suitable and accessible eatery nearby, shame really.

It's a take out that's why Atmosphere is just average, good food quick service 👍

The problem with telling people how great the cod father is that one stands the risk of huge queues the next time one wants some food

I placed an order and ordered a gravy chip which ended up costing me £6.70. Input in the notes requesting gravy as it Wasn’t in the choice of sauce a s ended up with a chip with no sauce and when I phoned I was charged £3.30 for a tub of gravy . I am not impressed at this at all . Really bad service .

We placed a large order this evening and it was excellent value. Brilliant portions and everyone very much enjoyed what they had, my toddler absolutely loved the big flakes of cod. Also one of the best pasties I have ever tried. Very helpful staff on the phone and order was ready in good time and all hot and very fresh. This was our first time trying and we will be back!

I tried this place for the first time tonight and believe me when I say I will be back. I ordered a pastie which was absolutely scrummy and the chunky homemade chips that came with it were totally fantastic I could have ate a bucket of them. Superb value friendly helpful staff. You are awesome. 🥰

Just yesterday I was sat on a bus which was waiting it's time in Gibsons Ln, Ards (Donaghadee - Belfast via Newtownards). I noticed this chippy opposite and as was a little hungry, I eyed up the lunch-time specials advertised in the window of this chippy. Temptations got too much, so decided to get off bus to take advantage of such a special, and so would get the following bus onto Belfast & eventually Coleraine. There were 2 staff on duty, a young man on the counter, & a lady who was frying. Both were most pleasant with me and other customers. So anyway I ordered a cheeseburger & chip special with a 500ml bottle of fanta lemon. Cost was £4.80(turned out to be such a bargain). After around 7-8 minutes they cheerfully gave me my food to enjoy. Wow - enjoy I certainly did!! I sat on a street bench just around the corner and got tucked in. Chips were roasting hot so got stuck into my cheeseburger first. Was impressed with the burger, the dressing and even the tasty bun..then the chips omg - Had noticed they looked just like chunky cut chips I used to get from various outlets when I was a nipper..and the taste😍. Hands down - the NICEST chips I have tasted(since I was about 9, or possibly ever!). I actually struggled to finish it all as per the very generous portion, but after swilling it down with the welcomed ice cold fanta, I got there. I then marched back into the chippy and asked the young chap to call his colleague from the back-room. I could tell they expected a complaint, but their assumption soon changed to joy when I told them that those were the nicest chips I had tasted for decades. They thanked me for my comments, and I told them I would be posting a truly honest review the next day..so here we are!! Enough said..so will end by saying - it's very safe to say I am already very much looking forward to my next visit to the Codfather! 😋👌🥰👏

I come up from Belfast to go to the market and this place is amazing. Chips are chunky and homemade and the fish is amazing

I love a good chippie soaked in salt/vinager, but must say this one is very hit and miss for me. Sometimes its nice sometimes not so much. Very rarely do you have a chippie always perect, maybe its the oil/time of year/potatoes/staff -who knows.

The fish here never disappoints and the steakettes have to be recommended. The shop has to be commended too for giving out 'free' chips when you order a single item. As everything is cooked to order you will have to wait but it ensures the food is fresh and hot and that's what it's all about.

We've tried all the Fish & Chip shops in Ards and Cod Father is by far the best. Whilst I would give a big shout out to Lynn's as well, the CF just tips the balance in their favour. The best chips I've had so far. Softer rather than crispy, but that's how we like them. The fish strips had such a lovely seasoned batter, light and crispy.. Even the tartar and thousand island dips were super quality. Burgers had good quality patties. The pastie was so well seasoned and flavourful. Portion sizes were overly generous but that suits others with bigger appetites than us! Just tasty and satisfying food. Keep up the good work, guys.

Best chippy I have ever got from the food is unreal and portion size is great!

Nice food and can now preorder and pay when collecting again. Food now generally ready when they say it will be. I do recommend.

This is a clean and friendly establishment. I noted that they have temperature probes for the food etc. The portions were large and the fish freshly battered as opposed to being pre done and refried.

I use this chip shop on a regular basis. The fish is cooked fresh and the batter is crispy and crunchy not gooey. I do wish they would stay open later. A take away menu would be a bonus.

The food is cooked to order. And the Tuesday deal on 2 fish suppers for £10 suits us fine. Never had a bad meal from The Cod Father. It also has 5 stars on the food hygiene ratings.

I don't visit here nearly enough as parking can be a pain, but great food and great portions and very nice and accommodating staff. All our food has always been cooked to perfection by a chef that can see the food is cooked without the need for timers, as too many have this day and it leaves food pale and all too often undercooked and sloppy. No complaints here, you just gotta try it.

Yes nice chips pleanty off them. A good pasty but they could do away with the pink inside it. Over £6 is the most costly pasty.

This is my favourite fish and chip shop. Pity I live so far away. The fish is always fresh and cooked to perfection and the portions are huge!

I always go to the Codfather for my fish as I just love the way it is cooked. Freshly cooked as you wait, it may take a little bit longer but it is nicer not having sat a while. They give you enough chips that would nearly do two people.

I love this chip shop. I’m gluten free and find it hard to get gluten free chip food that I trust. Nothing is ever too much and they are aware of food allergies and intolerances!

Phoned to place an order for gluten free fish tonight at 6pm, was told it would be ready at 6.45, went to collect it at 6.50 and it hadn't even been placed in the fryer, I was told the fryer needed to be brought up to temperature and when I stated that I had phoned 50mins previously to give plenty of time the guy on the till said "well you can have your money back if you want" - so rude! A bad and disappointing experience from The Codfather.

Really great chip shop. Staff always lovely and the food is perfect - every single time. Gorgeous food, great portion sizes and really great service. What more could you ask for? Gorgeous chips, gorgeous fish, gorgeous dips - everything is so yummy and so well cooked.

I am very unhappy with my order. the batter was burnt and the chips were very greasy the cheese was not melted on my chips and this is not the first time this has happened. I would not recommend this chippy to anyone. if you like burnt greasy food then the codfather is the place to be. very unhappy😑😑😑

Call in to the codfather as we fancied so fish and chips. A young server called John took my order. He was very helpful and explained everything as I never order in there before. We ordered 2 fish and in no time they were ready as everything seems to be cooked fresh. They we also talking telephone orders as well for collection. When I got home and opened the food he had chips in there as well. The batter was also great and not to greasy or stoggy Some of the chip shops don't give even a couple of chips with the fish. The fish was still steaming when I got it home. Will def call again I hope John is on again

Telephoned order was told 25mins and it was about that. The food was first class and fish was perfection cooked through and the Chicken goujons were beautiful. Two chips more than enough food for 3 people. Speedy service with a smile from Sinead. WELLDONE

Good food and good sized portions

Well named “The Cod Father” really is at the top of the food chain - With freshly made produce served by friendly and polite staff it is a joy to visit this wonderful chippie. Situated near the Bus Station in the heart of Newtownards. Yes you may wait a minute or two longer whilst your food is freshly prepared but that is more than compensated by the fresh crisp light batter on the Cod Gudgeon’s ( A personal favourite ) You will not be disappointed try it and see.

It's best to phone ahead and then your order is waiting cooked to perfection. All the cod is tested for temperature which ensures a perfect result every time. The premises hold a Food Hygiene Rating of 5.

First time I used this chippy the fish batter was flavoured with garlic. I assume some garlic item had been cooked in same fat. I hate garlic!! Time to sort out your pans.
