A great country pub and they do loads of things for the community. In the early stages of the pandemic, they sold and delivered, fruit and veg boxes, they put on amazing celebrations , bonfire night, VE day, Coronation etc, generally doing things for the community.

Very disappointed with my most recent visit. Myself and my husband often visit, usually around a couple of times a month as we do the brockadale nature reserve walk with our dog and call in for a drink. Usually the bar staff and people are friendly. Today I thought I'd drive down with my mum as it's a lovely old pub, lots of character and has a nice fire so perfect for a drink and a sandwich. My mum thought the pub was lovely so we thought we'd stay for a second drink. About half way in to our second drink an old woman came and smashed her wine glass down on the table and said to me and my mum really nastily "can you move up as there is some more people coming and we always sit here!" So me and my mum were so gobsmacked about how this woman spoke to us and I said "wow that was a bit rude there was no need for that" and she ignored me. Me and my mum finished our drinks up but felt very uncomfortable as we were constantly being watched by this woman, another woman and a man throwing evil looks at us. I took the glasses to the bar and still mortified by what had just happend I decided to speak to the woman who was working behind the bar. I basically said that the woman had been really rude and that there was no need for her to speak to us like that, the bar woman did apologise on her behalf (as she witnessed it and chose to do nothing about it) and sort of brushed it off and said "oh she can be quite rude" as if it is acceptable for customers to be spoken to like that by other customers. I said "I understand they're probably locals but people like that are going to drive customers away" but the bar woman didn't seem bothered, probably because this woman had bought her a drink. I don't think I will be going back as it was not a welcoming environment at all today which is a shame as we don't usually have any problems. Me and my mum obviously 'spoilt' someones Friday afternoon. I am also frustrated as I feel like if it was the other way round and I spoke to an old woman like that it would be a different story but no, it seems acceptable for an old person to talk to a younger person like rubbish! Very disappointed!

If I could give 0/5 I would! Absolutely disgusting staff working there, one woman attacked my friend by charging at her and strangled her, another man (i think the owner) grabbed me by the arm and pushed me out of the pub just because I said that the woman attacked my friend. Honestly ruined the night for everyone, makes you think some people just haven’t been raised properly, absolutely vile!!

NOT A FAN. Was on my yearly pilgrimage up to Pontefract to see that wonderful power station, but my experience was ruined by a lack of hot food and unhelpful workers. I was sitting patiently before I was rudely asked to order or get out, this was not a good sign. I then went up to the counter to ask for a BLT and a coca-cola but this was not a good idea. The bacon was all gristle, the lettuce corrupted by way to much mayo, and the tomatoes had next to no flavour. The coca-cola was also warm. 0/7 not a fan (BUT I HAVE TO GIVE AT LEAST ONE STAR)

My husband , granddaughter and I , along with our two dogs stopped for a hot drink and food after a long walk , the board outside said serving food ! I went in ( scanned the Covid app on entry ) waited for a member of staff to show up , when she did she was very rude telling not asking me to sit down !! I very politely informed her that we were outside , she rudely said right ! We asked for food and was told they did not serve food ?? We pointed to the board to which she said o yea sandwiches and which did we want ? As we had no menus or idea of what they did she went away to write them down ?she was very clearly put out by our request ! Not helpful in anyway !! Very rude we will definitely not be going again

Lovely village pub. Comments about food on here are unjust. It is not a pub for a meal. Yes they offer food, the odd sandwich and sausage roll, as a snack, it is not a meal pub nor gastro pub, it has no dining area. If you're visiting after a walk, njoy the local ale, relax in the garden or by the fire, don't comment about bad food if you have planned a meal out here, that's your bad planning, not bad food... If you visited and tried ordering a meal, no wonder the locals are looking at you and the bar staff seemed off, maybe try Weatherspoons in Ponte...

The pub itself is very cosy and traditional. After going on a walk around the local area we decided to pop in for a drink. As soon as we entered the mood changed, the locals looked at us like we had come from another planet. The bar staff couldn't have been any more rude if they tried. Didn't stay for another drink. A lovely old Sam Smith's pub which is clearly a very popular local. Comfortable & cosy with some interesting artifacts around the rooms. Open only Thu-Sun at time of writing (August 2024), we went for the 4pm opening time to celebrate my mother-in-law's 94th birthday - she was born in the village of Appleton Roebuck in August 1930 - and the bar quickly filled with folk who were clearly mostly locals. The chat was bubbling and the atmosphere was very pleasant. To the best of my knowledge the pub doesn't currently serve food. There is a large beer garden but dogs are not allowed anywhere in the pub, stars off by this reviewer for those two reasons.
