Room: the room was beautiful. We stayed in the Venetian suite, which was spacious and clean. The bed was very comfy and they had extra pillows in the wardrobe, if like me you can be a bit particular about pillows. The ensuite had a bath and shower. The shower water pressure was brilliant and the bath was a good size. Dining: the food looked lovely. For main we had the herb crusted lamb. This includes two small pieces of lamb, they were sadly very well cooked and very herb crusted - not to my taste. With so many good places to eat in the local area the food was a bit of a let down, especially considering the price. We were one of only two tables dining, so not much of an atmosphere either. This was unfortunately further impacted but the staff busily setting up for breakfast around us. As someone with sound sensitivities, the clattering of cutlery and sound of mugs being placed on plates was very off putting. Service: the front of house gentleman on arrival was very warm and friendly. As we're the bar and waiting staff. The service we experienced during the Saturday day could not be faulted. Room service is only available until 8:45pm and the bar is closed at 10pm. There is a lovely lounge area, where my husband and I sat, enjoying being able to sip nice wine (good selection here) and talk without the interruption of children. However, the night staff member was a stark contract to the friendliness of the staff we had previously encountered. I can only describe him as hostile. Another guest had returned from a function and asked if they could get some crisps or nuts. He sighed rolled his eyes and made it very clear she was in convincing him. He took a large jar of nuts from the bar and then returned with a small bowl with a few in. She asked if she could have more and was met with a sharp no, before he left the area. A few minutes later he returned, the other guest had gone to their room, he then rather sternly stated to us, from the door way that he was turning the lights off and locking the lounge area at 11. We went out to smoke at 10:35 to return a few minutes later to the lights off, doors locked. I felt like a teenager sneaking home. Just like that we are banished to our room. As a base to explore the area this hotel offers comfortable rooms and a good location. The breakfast was good (the poached egg was perfectly done). However, I wouldn't recommend staying here for the experience of the venue. I had wanted to visit for a while, thus we went for a birthday treat but I won't be rushing back.
