We received a warm welcome on Saturday late afternoon, we had drinks and managed to grab the last table for 7pm dinner. We were able to bring our rather large dog in and there was plenty of space behind and under the table for her to sleep. Staff were attentive and the service was great, unrushed so we could take our time picking our choices. Great starters, main and puddings -a vegetarian option was available for all courses- a good range of drinks available, I had a lovely stout. For me the stand out dishes were portobello mushroom starter, mushroom risotto and the banana split pudding. We also booked for Sunday lunch too and the veg roasties and cauliflower cheese were excellent.

We hadn’t made a booking for lunch but were welcomed very warmly and shown to a table near the fire. The menu was very varied so plenty of choices. I had the fish of the day which was hake. It was beautifully cooked and delicious. My husband had flat bread with shredded pork with hoisin sauce amongst other things which he really enjoyed. I then had baked cheesecake with blackcurrant sauce and sorbet and my husband had apple crumble with vanilla ice cream and crumble - all well presented and excellent. We’ll be happy to revisit this friendly pub.

Very popular for sunday lunch, this is a very well run pub and booking is essential. Excellent food, a cut above the usual pub fare, great service and reasonable prices. The village is very lucky to have a local of this standard in their midst. Very highly recommended.

Visiting from the midlands to see my son at New Year, his girlfriend booked us into the Royal Oak. What a great surprise… the service was excellent, the atmosphere very welcoming and the food superb! The wife and I started with grilled squid and I decided to opt for the homemade pie. The squid was great… the pie was superb!!! Best I’d had in ages. Badger beer at the bar, what more could you want. Will be back!

Upon having booked for Sunday lunch I requested not to be put on pillar table..but we were anyway I did question this but got told can transfer to table 1 in which was worst then where we were on..with roast beef wasn't best neither, tough, chewy & roast pots tasted like been reheated from previous day, as well as portion sizes below average & no stuffing with turkey when standards should be higher given that you been awarded best roasts...not happy..

Really like the pub, as it was a last minute decision to go out for tea we had the last table available, not ideally placed, just a bit noisy! Sweets were excellent, would definitely recommend calling in if anyone wants a break from the A303.

A mid week visit. A village pub with a spacious, rustic interior and large back garden. The menu looked promising but the food was rather average and overpriced. By 9.30 pm the pub was empty and we definitely got the vibe from staff that lingering over a coffee was not going to be popular. They wanted to close up early!

What a great find. Menu for carnivores, like me, is really good and veggies, like my wife, get a good look in too. My scallop pad Thai was a delight. I was fully expecting rubbery scallops, but no. They melted in the mouth and the blend of spices was excellent. I want the secret of that mix. Atmosphere is great with traditional decor. We felt quite young as the Over Stratton over 85s group was in. One actually apologised about the noise they had been making as they all have hearing problems. Staff very pleasant too. Just one very very very small thing though. You really don't have to bless me every time you visit the table. We will definitely be back.

Fantastic Sunday Lunch at The Royal Oak. We are fortunate to have a relative living close by, which means we get to sample the food here several times during the year. We had a wonderful Sunday lunch recently with beautifully cooked tender beef and a lovely selection of fresh vegetables. There is even a choice of medium or rare cooked beef. Puddings here are always a treat and the sticky toffee pudding is just too good to miss. Prices are very reasonable and beer is always up to scratch. The young team of staff really go above and beyond and nothing is too much trouble.

There aren't so many pub restaurants serving meals into Sunday evenings in South Somerset, so the fact that the one which does is so good is gratifying. They must be exhausted after the busy Sunday lunch scene, but we had a proper welcome, attentive table service, a quick correction when we pointed out a small problem, and great food. Madame had the goats cheese and sweet potato salad, and enjoyed the crispy sweet potato skin and freshness of the greens. I had the roast turkey and thought the meat succulent, Yorkshire pudding just right, potatoes and veg OK and really good cauliflower cheese. We've eaten here a couple of times and the quality of the food and service has been consistently good. Well worth a visit.
