The Royal Oak in North East Derbyshire

This is what a pub is supposed to be like. Great service from the moment we stepped in. Moretti on tap. Magic. Good atmosphere, busy, country pub. The food is exceptional and proper home style cooking. You don't get that these days with all that boil in the bag ding dinners they serve at chains. Battered cod and chips was excellent. Liver and onions, pies, braising steak. Range of desserts. Very reasonably priced. I mean, it's where you go for a great meal. Thank you Alan and Tracey.

Went to the Royal oak Saturday with friends a lovely experience The Food excellent Atmoshere very cosy Tracy and the staff were just wonderful very attentive even the chef said hallo you don't get that every where Well done to you all xx

Real old world pub. Truly exceptional. Whenever we are in the area this is a must have evening meal place.

Leather-gammon. Dry bread too stale for ducks. Rock hard nan. Mushrooms from the dawn of time.....

Didn't stop to sample any food or drinks as the welcome wasn't great. A quick question on our part if dogs were allowed was met with quite an abrupt answer. We usually sit outside even in a dog friendly pub but there was nothing instantly visible. I'm not paying full price for a beer to drink in a car park.

Lovely country pub, exceptional home cooked food, so fresh and tasty and the owners/staff were so welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend!

Passed by and thought 'we will nip in here for a pint'. It's a pub I've never been in. (Been a seasoned drinker since 1986.) Alas, we didn't know that you had to book to eat, otherwise you couldn't actually buy a pint and stand at the bar or elsewhere. So it's actually a restaurant, not a pub. There are no signs warning you upon entering that unless you've booked to eat in this restaurant in advance, you're not going to be catered for. Times have certainly changed.

Wow, what a great pub, very friendly and helpful staff, our walking club of 19 members that day, all served quickly with a generous and tasty meal, can highly recommend.

Had an excellent meal. Staff very friendly the, chef even came out to have a word with us. All the food is home made. My husband had steak and stilton pie which was extremely good and I had fish and chips which was also excellent. The portions were very generous so take a good appetite with you.

Lovely food will definitely being going back

Disappointed. Stopped off for a pint as we passed it on our walk. No cask ales! Charged £9.25 for a pint of John Smiths and one of Morretti! (Our local charges 8.65 for a cask ale and a Coors) Sat on the one and only table outside. This seems to be more of a restaurant than a country pub. Maybe it doesn't get many passing walkers, but doesn't seem welcoming to them. At least it served as a toilet stop!

Lovely proper home made food every time we visit.

Walked in for a drink with the family whilst in the area walking and was met with a very cold/frosty tone from the landlady claiming they were closing. We arrived at 2pm and the pub closes at 3pm (after later looking at there opening/closing times) They clearly didn’t like the look of my two well behaved small children, my wife and I. They also clearly cater for the one foot in the grave clientele too, upon looking around and their very dated table cloth look. Upon reflection we were so pleased we were met with this attitude as we visited the peakcock inn and that was a mere opposite of service and reception. Having been in “real pubs” for many years and the service in the majority of this industry is second to none especially after the pandemic, pubs are welcoming people back with open arms to boost trade and customer confidence. The Royal Oak is far from royal and clearly lives and operates in a past life of ignorance. Thank you to the land lady for sparing us our money and time for us to go on and visit a real pub where money was well spent.

Old cozy pub with good food and large portions.

Popped in for a quick pint and appalled at the prices - £5.15 for a pint of Moretti. Felt ripped off.

Cosy friendly pub, although more of a restaurant now due to covid and lack of space. Food was very good and well priced. No real ale on at the moment due to reduced trade and opening hours, I'll give stars when its back on :)

Fabulous meal this afternoon friendly people very good value

Lovely place with a cosy atmosphere. I was ill during my visit and they offered to wrap my meal for me so I could take it home for later. Will definitely be going back.

100% amazing meal and hospitality every time

Visited the Royal Oak this evening and was very impressed with the Vegan/Vegetarian menu 6 out of the 9 items were vegan. Best vegan menu I have ever seen, my food choice was delicious

I have been going to The Royal Oak in Old Brampton for years. I remember going with my parents for a Christmas meal on Boxing Day every year. To me the pub, friendly service and meal quality is pure perfection. I have had normal menu meals and they too do not disappoint. The produce is always fresh and of high quality. The beer/lager is good and the staff are always friendly and talkative. My wife and I visited last night for our Christmas menu meal and the food was yet again perfect. The vegetables, cooked to perfection and tasty. I say this whilst my mouth is watering. Faultless as always. A must visit pub. Hats off to the chef and staff. Hits the spot!! Superb!

Best Christmas dinner have had in a long time

Best pub food for miles around. Plus excellent beer.

Went here for the first time last night. Food was excellent and all home cooked. The gravy I had with my chicken breast and stuffing was delicious. Varied vegetarian and vegan menu too which my husband was very pleased with. The lady on the bar was very friendly, as was the waiter. The only negative was the lighting. I feel it was a bit bright and could be a bit more subtle.

Called in 2 get lunch on Friday time was 8 minutes past one asked if we wanted food which was yes then told the chef wanted 2 go 2 cash and Carry so was not doing food would hate 2 book a Christmas meal probably find chef was not working no atmosphere at all

My family has been coming to this pub for year's. It's always best to book to avoid disappointment (you won't be disappointed). The food is very good quality for the price and you get very generous helpings. If you like good home cooked food, this is the place to visit!! You are always made to feel welcome, children too. My daughter absolutely loves it. Even though I am a parent I don't appreciate going out for meals and having children running round, but the locals love it, always make a fuss,along with the staff. I love the relaxed atmosphere on a Sunday, and you don't have to have a Sunday roast ( which isn't an option in some place's) you have a full menu to choose from with a wide range of meals to choose from.

Unwelcoming. Made to feel very uncomfortable & sat in a corner ! We heard locals comment that Children are not welcome. We had a drink & left. Would not return. 'A local place for local people ? " 😉

Eleven of us went for Sunday lunch and although it was quite busy, none of us had to wait long for our meal. The range of meals is substantial and the vegetarians in our party were well catered for. The staff are friendly and efficient and remembered from the time I booked months ago,that it was an anniversary celebration. Good choice of sides to the main meals (chips/boiled/mashed potato & garden peas/mushy peas/veg or salad) Very generous servings and everything was cooked perfectly. Meals are consistently good. Definitely recommend.

Standard pub grub. Went with a large group which they catered for well. Food was nothing special.

Not the place for walkers and /or if you are with children , the place was almost empty , apparently they had no tables available but a bench outside ?!?!? Clearly a targeted audience , I wouldn’t say they were affluent either needless to say , the tired decor and limited courtesy would of sufficed , if the willing hospitality had been there .

Nice hill top situation with expansive views outside, but they don't exploit this fact and the place seems very introspective. Despite having the potential for a spectacular beer garden the best location for this is taken up by a car park. Inside,the place is spacious but decor is bland, tired and dated, a bit 70s-ish. Beer choice was abysmal as if it was only an afterthought to the pub's real purpose of being a country restaurant. On offer were the usual suspects. John Smiths extra smooth, Strongbow cider, Guinness, one of the common lagers and a parody of a cask ale called Tetleys Cask, a slightly sour tasting concoction, probably not well kept. Nor were the drinks particularly cheap. However its one strong point is the food and it is a busy pub for this one reason alone. Meals are good quality and reasonably priced. The customers seem to consist mainly of pensioners and there were plenty of them eating large portioned traditional food like roasts and pies for about £7-8 per meal. Sandwiches were good quality and fairly priced. A large bowl of home cooked chips £1.75.Soup & Roll £3.25 This place could be improved , - a makeover for the uninspiring interior,a beer garden to attract the punters in summer,some decent local real ales at a fair price and dump the John Smiths and Tetleys to pull in the drinkers as well as the diners.- but keep the chef. 2 years on we went in again today (Feb 6 2015). Nothing much has changed from my previous review except the decor which has improved a bit. Drinks selection much the same and the food still very good and good value. I asked the landlady about putting cask ales on the bar. She said they don't sell enough ale for it to be worth doing. It's very much a food pub and the tenants seem content to keep the place as it is. Nov 10 2017. I called here for lunch during a hike in Nov 2012, Feb 2015 and both times I left a review. My first one five years ago is still relevant. Is this place in a time warp ? The food is still good quality, good quantity and good value. The menu and prices have barely changed. £3.35 for sandwiches when the rip off Peak District pubs usually charge a fiver or more. A pot of chips has gone up by 20p in five years. Main meals are still £7 to £8 as I reported then. The customers are still mainly OAPs who have driven up here for their dinners. The beer selection, as I reported then, is still poor and their token cask ale is still a bit sour tasting. Only the decor and the table layout has changed in five years. Also service was a bit slow, having to wait 50min for sandwiches.

We visited on 5th April 2017, and were really glad we did. The Royal Oak is a traditional, comfortable Derbyshire Inn with nice, friendly staff and a good selection of beers, wines and spirits. There's plenty of parking, with really good view from its hilltop location to Chesterfield and the edges of the Peak District We had a Steak and Kidney Pudding and Battered Cod with Chips on both and a good dollop of Mushy Peas. The prices were extremely reasonable - more so when the food came out : Two big portions of really tasty, superbly cooked food. It was all homemade, the chips came from a spud and not a freezer bag, the fish was big and the batter crunchy - the steak and kidney pudding was PACKED with meat and according to the missus was delicious. While waiting for the food to arrive I had a look at the menu - big and again cheaper than the average, and then had a furtive look at other diners plates. In all honesty I'd have been happy to eat anything that was there, it all looked wonderful, and even the Lite Bite plates were a good size. We will definitely be going back. I'd recommend you ring and book a table as it got busy even early on a Wednesday lunchtime. This may well turn into our go-to Pub for days off together when we don't want to travel too far out of Chesterfield

Recently refurbished and now has a cosy wood burning stove. Still serving traditional food at a great price. Our favourite is the home-made steak and mushroom pie. Has lots of regulars, so worth phoning

sunday lunch 3 courses for 10,95 quitr70s but very good value

so i put the decor as "good" but that's only by definition as i actually think its very good; even if styled like the doctors tardis. we've only been twice, and can't seem to find the time to make it back again. the food was excellent, so much so that i've had the same dish twice. lovely place, great value and taste too!
