A lovely historic pub, originally known as 'The Black Swan Alehouse' in 1620 apparently. Lovely roaring fire & beams beautifully furnished with some lovely art works on the walls in the restaurant area. A heavy velvet curtain to keep draughts at bay from the entrance & large antique radiators add a homely warmth on a winter's day. Car parking available. Attentive friendly service & delicious food. 3 courses for £23, 2 choices for each course so well worth a try! Definitely would love to visit again.

We used to go regularly but haven’t been for over a year, and we won’t be going back. While the waiter was excellent and the ambience is great, their value for money is very poor. We paid over £15 for the Mac ‘n’ cheese with salad. The portion was the size and quality of a microwave meal for one a tin pie dish and the salad consisted of just lettuce, nothing else. The pie was in the same sized dish with some veg on the side at over £19. When asked what we wanted to drink when we sat down, I asked for a large Sauvignon Blanc. It wasn’t till we got the bill we realised this was £13 a glass. I think many shops and restaurants have used the current cost of living crisis as an excuse to charge more than necessary, and The Red Lion at Soham has jumped on that band wagon.

I don't bother to write reviews but hubby and I went for Sunday lunch and what a treat it was. Honestly one of the best Sunday lunches we have ever had and we've tried a fair few! We both had the roast beef which was meltingly tender, juicy and pink and all the accompaniments were perfectly cooked and delicious. I'm not a bad home cook but if only I could cook like this! Exactly what you want when you go out, food better than you can produce yourself, otherwise what's the point? I've lost count of the times I've thought my roast potatoes/Yorkshires/gravy are/is better than this, but not so at the Red Lion. The food was stunning, and the desserts - I can thoroughly recommend the chocolate and orange bread and butter pudding with creme anglais, yum! We have tried other so-called 'gastro-pubs' which have either been a snobbish version of any other chain out there (wouldn't have been surprised if they were just overpriced, out of a bag ding dinners) or so pretentious they made us feel uncomfortable (and their food wasn't all that in our opinion - under-cooked veg and more fat than meat). The Red Lion is a cut above. Waiting staff were all lovely and friendly and had a chat with us and their other customers but weren't intrusive. We honestly could not fault it and will definitely be back, and soon!

I recently dined here, I do feel the service and atmosphere are great. I wasn't overly impressed with the food. The let down for me were the potatoes, I just felt the roast potatoes were reheated and tasted soggy instead of having that nice crisp crunch. It's expensive and brands as upper market Dining, I just didn't expect to be let down and I do really love potatoes. Still, overall 4 star. The other aspects to the menu and food were good. I still would return, just maybe choosing something different.

We had eaten here on 2-3 other occasions and found it to be very good, a lovely cosy restaurant the food and service had always been excellent. Our last visit was not so great we had invited a couple of friends to join us and booked well in advance, arriving in good time at the restaurant we stepped in and were completely ignored, a couple of staff had come past and seen us waiting but completely ignored us, I must be honest they were of course busy but even a simple greeting would have been appreciated. We had a drink and having ordered, our food was bought out quite promptly our meals were all lovely freshly prepared and tasty as a party of 4 a small bowl of vegetables was bought out, we asked if that was for the 4 of us as frankly the amount of veg for 4 people was miniscule, we were told the dish was for us all. There was a small spoonfull of greens each and 3 pieces of carrot that would not have made 1 medium size carrot in total! We weren't sure haw to divide 3 pieces of carrot between 4 of us!! Naturally we asked for some more vegetables. Deserts were delicious the crumble lovely but such a small portion. We used to refer to this place as a little gem in Soham, so disappointing I don't think we'll be returning any time soon.

Our first visit yesterday, having been recommended by a Soham resident, glad we took his advice. It's an interesting old pub with a small car park attached, and dog friendly throughout. Lovely day so we ate in garden. Food was very good, if a bit pricey, with some interesting choices. The service was excellent. Shame it was so quiet but people may have been put off by an erroneous notice online saying the pub was permanently closed (malicious rival, perhaps?) It isn't closed and it's well worth visiting. We'll go again.

Six of us (three couples) dined at the Red lion on a Saturday lunchtime. All of us agreed that the food was really excellent. I had shoulder of lamb which was perfecly cooked and my wife had turbot ("which was beautiful"). Another of the party praised the spiced goat. The carrots and creamed vegetables were delicious, as were the roast potatoes. The portions (veg and roasties) were a bit on the small side but exquisite. Prices are a touch on the expensive side but well worth it. It was cosy, the ambience was just right for a Saturday lunchtime, and the service was good and unobtrusive.

This was only the second time we have been here, the first shortly after it opened, which wasn't the best experience, and again this weekend. A much better experience. Both were family visits. For all in the party, it was positive. Welcoming from the start, a good selection of choices all at a very reasonable price. The icing on the cake was that one person had dietary requirements and rather than just getting a dumbed-down version of the choices on the menu, the chef personally phoned the guest and prepared a course, especially for her. Thank you, it made all the difference and we will definitely be going more often.

Started with very poor slow service, 20 minutes till drink orders were taken and another 15 before they were delivered. Sat in the garden which was plagued by wasps, no attempt to control. We chased up about taking our food orders and eventually gave up and went to sit at the designated table, eventually our food order was taken, more than 1 hour after we had arrived. Generally the starters were tasty but oh dear, a lack of choice for mains (they had run out of the popular items) left little to choose. The roast beef was very fatty, very rare, and little taste, which complimented the horse radish sauce perfectly, equally no taste. The roast potatoes had been cooked many hours before and and the veg slightly crispy also. Mains were served like warm not hot. My 2 star rating is based on some excellent wines, the rest needs serious improvement.

The pub has been transformed into a lovely venue with a great atmosphere and the staff were attentive without being intrusive. As we were shown to our table you could not help but notice the napkins on the tables they were linen, screwed up, crumpled and hard, they clearly had not seen an iron. I use linen napkins at home, so I know they should have been so much better!! this gave a poor impression from the start. We ordered G&Ts which were exceptional. Our table was 6:30 on a Saturday, the waitress took our order after 15 mins she returned to tell us that the crab starters we ordered had finished and there was only one goats cheese salad left, a little early to run out and why did the waitress not have that information when taking our order? When a waitress came out of the kitchen door you could clearly hear raised voices and the F word shouted out, not very professional. The main meals were very nice, but 3 very small lamb loin chops do not make a rack of lamb which was the description on the menu, normally there are at least 4 good size chops. The vegetables were in short supply, I had a pie for one and the vegetables for two came in the same sized pie dish, carrots and cabbage, I think 3 vegetables is really the norm.Because we live in the village we will try it again but with a really good restaurant in the next village The Red Lion really needs to address the issues we found. I hope when we return our experience will be different.

Recently had the most amazing meal at this restaurant. My family also stayed here and the accommodation was outstanding....absolutely a hidden gem when visiting the area.

We went here with some friends ,our visit didn’t start well as they couldn’t find our reservation ! However they were very polite and responded well by saying they would accommodate us on an extra table .The service was very good and the food lovely ,but we felt quite expensive. However 2 of our party found it hard to find a mains they liked. The menu we felt was quite restrictive, but very good quality and beautifully cooked . The puddings were very nice apart for the pavlova which was rather hard !!! Overall we were impressed and the restaurant was very busy which says it all . Lovely atmosphere polite staff and very professional. We will visit again.

We visited the Red Lion for a birthday meal and were delighted. This restaurant goes from strength to strength and must now surely rate among the best in the region. The white bean hummus with coriander and spicy goat with tzatsiki were delicious and innovative without being pretentious, and the ham and mushroom gratin and suffolk lamb were also glorious. The wine list is good and the service exemplary. I do hope they get the support from the local community that they deserve.

Went to red lion today for a Sunday lunch with our walking group. There were 16 of us. We were seated all together in a loverly old room, most of us had different meals. I can say that this is the best Sunday lunch I have had this year. The food was well cooked and presented. All in the group were very pleased by this booking.

Went here with friends who live locally - and what a lovely treat! Owned by the same people as The Old Fire Engine, the food is equally as delicious.I was told that the beef was "melt in the mouth" - it certainly looked absolutely beautiful and pink! My venison was delicious and portions were decent. A special mention for the gooseberry fool which I had for pudding.Service was good and very friendly. Hopefully we'll have an opportunity to return once more.

16 of us had an excellent Sunday lunch at the Red Lion, the roast beef was the best I have eaten in many years and everyone else enjoyed their lunch too. We were in a nicely furnished room off the main restaurant and the service was friendly and efficient. What more can I say?
