Fantastic food , great old fashioned pub grub

Stay at red lion this week wish I would have known about this place the week before I was in the premiere inn can't recommend the red lion enough really nice people and staff room was great . Great night's sleep aswell

Just popped in with the missis for some lunch and both decided on the chilli, chips and rice My chilli was about 10*c at some points showing they microwaved it, didn't stir , didn't probe or even hand check the temp. The chilli wasn't awful but dry, the rice was dry... Almost like packet rice and with the chips it made the whole meal very dry. The beer was pretty nice The service was awesome from the young girl but "Margaret" was very unwelcoming , short and didn't even have the decency to ask how the meal was or check whilst eating it Giving the place 2* is generous if it wasnt for the young girls excellent service I don't particularly like bad reviews as people will read plenty of good ones off me, but I wouldn't stop here ever again

Came for a family get together, food was absolutely lovely (thank you chef's) 8 different meals all nearly empty plates . Sadly service for us let it down a bit , the girls we're friendly and nice but lacking in attention to details..... Still waiting on the mayonnaise we asked for !. Dirty plates sat on the table way to long , when clearly we had all finished eating half an hour or more before they we're finally removed. When asked about pudding "if they had milk in" as I'm lactose intolerant (i.e the Brownie's) came back " their gluten free".... That wasn't the question I asked , so asked again , to which response was "yes think there's milk in them" , so just didn't bother incase . Very lacking on details of ingredients for different allergies to the usual vegan/vegetarian, even tho we had said at the beginning about our allergies. 2 of us had burgers maybe you need to look at your menu as it states " with onion ring's " "s" being there means more than 1 which we both only got the smallest onion ring I've seen on each plate All this won't stop me coming back as we love the red lion and have been a number of times but this meal was very lacking in attention to detail.

Had an evening meal here after a walk in Cochshutt with sister, stayed one night bar closed early due to no customers but all told lovely room large bath comfortable bed.

Really nice meal with the family... I had the steak burger, with jalapenos, a fried egg and salsa, amazing. They had some board games in the pool area, so after food we stopped and played Scrabble.

We have just returned from a 3night stay at the barns in Ellesmere&their helpful guide mentioned the Red Lion.On arriving Friday,we wondered into the centre&decided to eat here.We were served promply&in the most friendly manners by the owner mum&another gentleman (who then served us everyday lol) we ordered&received our food within 10/15 mins.Everything was hot,tasty&you get a right good portion at a more than reasonable cost!We enjoyed our food so much we returned Saturday AND had the most DELICIOUS roast on Sunday (Lamb) i wouldn’t hesitate to return to the red lion with my family.Food,staff&the lovely oldie worldie feel of the pub/restaurant are fab.Thanks so much to all the staff we encountered,and of course,the chefs :) xxx

We really enjoyed our evening at the Red Lion. The food was fantastic: My wife’s lamb shank fell off the bone perfectly; my sausages and mash—supplied by nearby Oteley Farm—were delicious; my son didn’t speak a word while he devoured his DIY burger, which spoke volumes; and my daughter’s full English breakfast was a full cut above the norm. The wait staff were friendly and attentive. And the local crowd were cheerful and welcoming, which made the week after Christmas that much more memorable. Top notch all around. Highly recommend!

Popped in for a pint and ended up staying for some food. Pint of Thwaites Gold which was very drinkable. Had a look at the menu and ordered a nachos starter and a side of chips. Wow the size of the nachos is massive and tasty. But the chips, honestly the best triple cooked fries I've ever had, honestly the BEST. All this was served by some lovely staff who can either make or break an afternoon out. Thanks guys.

Great pub food. Recommended. We had some soup and a jacket potato - both great. On a previous visit, we'd tried their Sunday lunch, which was a bit less successful (perhaps a little formulaic?) - but still pretty good. Some friends who stayed here rated it highly.

Lovely pub in a busy village. Good accommodation although the room was on the small side (but still excellent value) but fine for one or two nights. Food was good excellent! The entrance to the car park is very very narrow but Range Rovers seem to get in and out.

Nice afternoon meal just passing through during work visit

Took a group of 14 got lunch. Everyone enjoyed their food and it was really good value for money. The service was a touch slow but they were busy. Will visit again when in the area.

Excellent food at very good prices. Friendly staff despite being pretty busy for a Monday. The rump steak deserves a special mention.

Don't let the slightly rough exterior put you off- the service is friendly and efficient and the food excellent.My wife ordered the full rack of ribs and the meal was an absolute bellybuster fit for a navvy.Ribs were cooked just right . My surf and turf was likewise excellent. Both meals +a side salad came to less than £40 -excellent value.

We have stayed at the Red Lion quite a few times over the past 15 years and this is the first time we have been disappointed booked a meal last night mine was good my husband’s mixed grill was cold went to our room no heating on so we left early ☹️

Friendly helpful staff..really nice good value food visited on Saturday and had a mix of light meals..on the sunday we had a mix of more substantial meals..all served Hot and delicious and the bill didn't make your eyes water..would most definitely recommend and would certainly return..

An excellent traditional pub serving high-quality pub food with a selection of five real ales, three of which were local. We were there on a Monday and it was moderately busy but we got a table without booking. The atmosphere was comfortable and cosy. Service was friendly and efficient. The food and beer were excellent. A good range of traditional and less traditional meals and desserts. I would recommend the lamb shanks and honeycomb cheesecake, which was very light.

We went to the regular Sunday night quiz. Atmosphere was friendly, service was good and the sandwiches and chips at half tome were excellent.

Food was cold. I ate it but should have sent it back. When the waitress came to clear our plates. I told her, she said sorry I will tell the kitchen. Never came back to us to tell us what the kitchen had said. Not mentioned when we paid. Very hit and miss there. Had some lovely meals in the past but also had terrible meals. The poor meals always seem to happen when it's busy, they Just can't cope. It was busy on this particular day.

We stopped here for drinks and food after a long walk and all was excellent, nice beer, very good fish and chips and reasonable prices. Will be back.

Went 6 months ago had fish and chips was lovely and plentiful. Had the same today paid £13.50 12 chips and half the size fish will definitely not be going again . Very disappointed.

Had the normal size fish, chips, mushy peas the fish was more pensioner size with 10 chips and half a pot of peas for £13.50 is disgusting and will not return

Our group of 16 had a fantastic time, food excellent, very reasonably priced and very good service. Many thanks we will be back.

Went with daughter whilst staying in the area as came highly recommended and didn't disappoint. I had the mixed grill and daughter had rump steak. Really nice food and friendly service. Worth booking as gets pretty busy. All the food coming out the kitchen going to other tables looked and smelled incredible.

Lovely rural pub with good pub food. Staff are very welcoming and efficient. Very good value for money and the portions are generous. We ate here very recently and were quite impressed on the whole. The all day breakfast was a little overcooked, but,it was quite late in the evening and very busy. On the whole it's a good old fashioned pub serving hearty locally sourced food. Good value for money and well worth a visit.

Our 4th stay ( group of 4 on Motorcycles)Superb VFM,rooms not unsuited,but works OK for us. Always clean,and very comfortable ( bed). Staff are top notch ,friendly, helpful,very welcoming. Food 5* pub food . Could not fault it. We will be back. Thank you.

Had one of the best sunday roasts out for a very long time: lamb was perfect; there was crispy kale and cheesy leeks, as well as the usual veg. They also did a small portion and didn't label it "child's portion". So many pubs don't offer smaller portions for those of us that are trying some form of control over weight gain.

Hadn't booked a table, very busy but found a table for two. Friendly cheerful staff great value, lovely food. Even have a doggy menu for your 4 legged friends, 😄

First time visiting Ellesmere and went for food on mid-week day with a friend. Went in, sat down at an empty table and told we couldn't sit there it was reserved (allegedly, despite no label). So got up and sat another empty table, told again - we couldn't sit there (not politely either) Asked what table we could sit at, and despite seeing several empty tables was told there weren't any but we could sit at the bar or outside. OK then, can we order some food. "Not until 8pm" (this was 6:20pm) I could totally understand that maybe all of these things were true, but it was the most unwelcome we have ever felt in any pub anywhere. Rather than just say "sorry that table's booked" or "sorry, we're backed up in the kitchen, can I get some drinks while you wait" it was "you can't sit there". So we didn't. We left and won't be going back Also, it looks a lot cleaner online than it does in reality (it looked a bit grubby inside). They could absolutely do with some new, cleaner carpets, some mullti-surface cleaner on the tables and whizz round with a duster and vacuum.

Great food service and atmosphere

Visited here on a canal boat trip in May 2024. It was a Wednesday but it was very busy that night and we hadn't reserved a table so we were seated in a room in the back of the pub next to the pool room and had to place our order before 6:30 but to be fair they could have just turned us away. Food was good and portions very large and bill was reasonable. Overall worth a visit.

Appalling service. Gave one star for food ...but to be fair , I can't judge as we never had our order taken , let alone getting the chance to eat it. When our drinks, which I ordered at the bar, eventually arrived, I tried to place our food order. I was told that she couldn't as they were very busy but, like Arnie, would be back . She wasn't ...neither was the younger member of staff who passed our table and then headed off with a bottle of prosecco for some more fortunate customer. Eventually we got fed up waiting and decided to just pay for our drinks and go to somewhere else. We noticed that people who had arrived AFTER US were being served. LUCKY THEM.

Situated next to the parish church. Well known for its food, we did not eat but enjoyed a pint. Dog friendly. Worth a visit maybe next time we will get to eat.

Dropped in for lunch after dog walk into Ellesmere. Very dog friendly, they even have a dogs menu! Food was great with a good menu. Lovely, welcoming atmosphere and staff.

We are visiting Ellesmere for the weekend. We had a lovely meal at the red lion this evening. We had the home made lasagna and Greek kebab, which both were really tasty and generous size. Staff were very friendly.

We went here for mother's day. Food was great, generous portions and staff were happy and attentive. The building itself is lovely and very old. Set in a lovely location. The puddings were lovely too. Thank you all for a great evening!

Stayed here several times overnight on way to a motorcycle event. No nonsense straightforward pub. Friendly helpful staff 👍 Would I stay again? Yes! No problem.

Been there several times with groups of friends. The menu is quite extensive and has some unique dishes that you don't find in typical pubs. Highly recommended. They also managed larger parties of 10 or more without any fuss.

just rang to book a table for 2 today, the lady answered and said to give her a moment, i waited 11 minutes and then hung up and tried multiple times since and had no answer.

Nice old coaching inn on the town edge of Ellesmere. Welcoming staff and nice seating areas. Food looked very nice, beers were grand.

Evening meal whilst staying at Blackwater Barns. I had the gammon and chips. Best gammon I have ever had. Lady Jill had the lamb shank and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our daughter and her husband had steaks, both were cooked perfectly. Service was first rate. Wines were nice and good value.

I stayed at the Red Lion for a couple of nights when working locally. The room was ok, breakfast (included) was good, the pub food was decent. The car park was a bit full at times, but it might have been possible to park on the street. My room was pretty cold - I'm not sure the radiator was big enough for a quite large room. The bathroom was very cold (but it was a particularly cold couple of days). There was a radiator in the bathroom, but I could not get it to work. The shower was a little strange as the shower head (a large, circular head designed to be right above the person showering) was too low for me (6 feet tall) to stand up, underneath the shower head, which was not particularly comfortable. I suspect that anyone over about 5'6" may encounter the same issue.
