First visit following change of management. Excellent welcome, great atmosphere, excellent service and top class food. The pie was exceptional. Will be recommending friends to visit the Red Lion and it will be on our visit again list. Thank you to all the staff

Lovely little pub. Food was outstanding (biggest yorkshire pudding I've ever seen!), and the service was great. Only little quibble I would have is that the tables are very close together, so you feel a little bit on top of each other. Dog friendly, which is great.

Under new management so still finding their feet (and the hot plate !) Lovely building with open fires Very attentive staff but sadly these did not make up for cold food, very noisy/scratchy stoneware plates and very tough meat in steak and ale pie.

You’ve heard of a pub with no beer? This is a pub with no Sunday Roast 😥 they’ve stopped doing them. I picked an alternative of a pork loin chop which looked okay. BUT the chef must have got a new pepper mill for his birthday and sprinkled a heavy dose of it over EVERYTHING. Including the apple sauce 🤬 Lessons learned we didn’t hang around for dessert instead that got the same treatment ~ instead stopped off for an ice cream at the local garage. I

Five of us booked for an evening meal. We had a mix of Thai, pizzas and English food. The service was excellent and all the food delicious. We had a bit left over all nicely packaged in doggie boxes. The restaurant was very clean and tidy. We’ll be back!

Lovely meal, freshly prepared, pizza and Thai curries were delicious. The baklava was absolutely fabulous I will be returning just for that ! Thank you for looking after us.

The roast was like a school canteen. Used to really rate the food here but it was a shamble! Tinned carrots? Frozen Yorkshire puds? Also the price has increased!

Disappointingly unwelcoming. We had planned a nice walk in the woods with the red lion as a halfway pit stop for a pint and also good reason to check the place out to see if we would return for a large family meal next week, as liked the look of the menu online. The place was half empty but we still checked we were ok to stay just for a couple of drinks and were told yes this was ok but only for 1 hour (?!) Sat by the window- when I went to buy a second drink we were asked to change tables- albeit politely- I just assumed someone had requested that table, no problem but why no reserved sign? Well by the time we finished our second drink the original table was still unoccupied. It seems clear that this PUB thinks it is an eating establishment only! Such a shame as was excited by the prospect of Greek hospitality and cuisine. It hadn’t got any busier by the time we left. Next time we will choose our walk and pit stop around a nice country pub where it is run as such!

An excellent meal for two on a Friday lunchtime. Excellent customer focused service - really helpful. A good selection of drinks and quality food. The only issue I have is with the generous portion sizes, particularly the ribs, I just could not eat it all. Overall an excellent visit meal and will visit again.

Booked a table to catch up with friends. Have been before and liked the pub, great atmosphere and lovely log fire and wood burner. We all ordered different meals but everyone loved their meal. I had green Thai curry which was fragrant and delicious, another had the king burger which they enjoyed, another had the pork 4x4 omg a huge pork steak with a lovely fresh salad chips and apple sauce it was thoroughly enjoyed and lastly a penang curry also thoroughly enjoyed. Yes we would definitely visit again, staff very friendly as soon as you walk in we were welcomed and asked how we were were, promptly seated and drinks order taken. Good did take a while to come but this was ok as food was freshly cooked and piping hot and we were updated saying our food wouldn’t be much longer. A great lunch and catch up

This was a Hall & Woodhouse pub with the usual pub food and H&W beers. We had 2 starters each for lunch which were excellent. Not the cheapest "pub" in the area, but worth the visit. We will return.

This is the real deal. There are so few decent non-chain restaurants in the Reading area and finding this is a real treat. The food was brilliant, authentic Italian (try the baked onions for a starter to die for) with an additional pizza oven.

Another fabulous meal at the Red Lion. Always a real treat. Prices match anything you'd pay in Reading town centre, but the food a 100 times better. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and always something different on the menu.

Cenamos en el Red Lion muy recientemente, y encontré que el ambiente, el servicio y la comida muy buena. Me hubiera gustado un poco más de variedad de auténtica comida italiana en vez de una lista enorme de pizzas aunque, para ser sincero.

Un agradable pub acogedor pero la gerencia tiene que organizar los horarios con sus pedidos de pizza y platos principales pedidos como el chef chef cocina pizza y parece que no sirven juntos. Los camareros no explicar esto y se disculpó, pero esperamos una hora entre los aperitivos y platos principales. En un fin de semana muy ocupado y camareros le costó mantener.

Locale molto accogliente, ottima qualità del cibo, porzioni abbondanti, la brigata di cucina è molto professionale e preparata, il servizio è molto curato e il personale di sala sempre molto disponibile e sorridente, molto buona anche la pizza e detto da una napoletana vuol dire che è proprio vero!!!! Complimenti al sig. Franco (titolare) ed al suo splendido team, stanno facendo proprio un bel lavoro e spero di tornarci il prima possibile!!!

La noche del martes y el restaurante estaba muy lleno, así que parece ser un lugar popular. Más un restaurante ahora que un pub, creo que, aunque todavía hay un bar que da a la habitación principal. Situado en una carretera a unos pocos kilómetros de lectura y de Basingstoke y probablemente un poco más cerca de Mortimer Tadley. Had a great meal on Saturday night - the pizzas were very fresh and some original combinations of toppings. You can even take home what you don't finish - all reasonably priced. The baked onion for starter is recommended

He vuelto muchas veces, ya sea en grupos pequeños o como pareja.

Pub agradablemente renovado con un montón de espacio en sábado almuerzo. El servicio era atento y la comida era deliciosa. Tamaño de la porción era un poco inconsistente, aunque el pescado y patatas fritas fue generoso con un lado de guisantes. Suprema de pollo era minúsculo en comparación y realmente necesitaba una parte de algún tipo, pero esto no fue sugerido en el momento de realizar el pedido. En general, la comida estaba bastante bien de precio para la calidad y volvería si en la zona.

Fui con un amigo para almorzar y ambos quedamos encantados con la calidad de la comida. No comer nada con tomates así el restaurante prepararon una comida de pasta con los sabores más increíble y verduras. Qué más se puede pedir!

Solíamos ir a este pub mucho en nuestros paseos hace unos años como el propietario era un carácter, pero echamos de menos cuando se ha cambiado de manos. Hoy (viernes) caminamos cerca y fuimos para el almuerzo. Durante el día es parte de pub, una pizzería parte. Vimos a un par de orden y reciba 2 peces enormes y comidas chip y parecían doradas y crujientes como deberían. Cambiamos nuestra orden de 3 pescado y patatas fritas y una pizza. Mover, como el mal de pescado y patatas fritas salió pálido y con la mitad de masa complaciente formulación cocinado, aunque los peces debajo estaba bien. Hemos pescado mucho mejor y patatas fritas en muchos lugares. Sospechamos que la cocina esperamos hasta la pizza, que fue preparado en el restaurante, estaba listo, antes de freírlas el pescado, y no cocinar el tiempo suficiente. Realmente decepcionante. El propietario/gerente aclararon los platos y podría ver todos los montículos de masa complaciente formulación nos fuimos, pero no preguntamos si disfrutamos de nuestras comidas. Pizza estaba bien. Volver a las cuatro de la Herradura en Rotherwick...

Fuimos a la Red Lion por una rara noche sin nuestro bebé. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente para un sabor de la comida italiana auténtica y el servicio. No estaba muy lleno y teníamos la opción de mesas. Mucho aparcamiento y una cálida bienvenida.

Nos estábamos tomando, amigos y fue su elección, así que no puedo decir mucho en el tiempo, pero la comida me pareció pobre. Tuve el salmón ahumado, que parecía una buena parte, pero resultó ser establecido en la cima de una pila de repollo blanco y pobre valor de £9, seguido por el vientre de cerdo cocinado lento en una "cama" de patatas puré de verduras y una corriente que era tan pequeño como para ser invisible. Estábamos muy emocionados de encontrar este pub/restaurante casi lo suficientemente cerca para ser los auténticos italianos tenemos largo nos antojaba. Pasta casera y la pizza, aquí vamos! La realidad no es tan sencilla, y creo que una segunda visita pueden ser necesarios para conseguir una idea real de la feria de cocina fuertes. En esta ocasión, los resultados fueron concluyentes: los aperitivos eran peores de lo esperado, mi casa - salmón curado sirve también refrigerados para el sabor sutil que surjan y caballa fresco y sabroso atún de mi pareja acompañada de una ensalada de tomate.

Cuatro de mis colegas y yo nos alojamos en Wokefield Park en negocios y comimos en el Red Lion anoche y que una gran comida. El olor del horno de pizza te golpea tan pronto como entras en lo que es un buen detalle. El bar tenía una excelente variedad de cervezas y licores y una gran carta de vinos. El menú es también fantástico compartimos algunos entrantes y platos principales, cada uno tenía la comida estaba muy bien presentada y probado excelente. El servicio también fue excelente, todo el personal italiano y muy atento. El Red Lion va a mucho esfuerzo y atención al detalle y muestra realmente. Muy recomendado, no dudes en ir y me encantaría volver. Gracias por una experiencia encantadora.

We popped in, as we were passing one Sunday, we had not booked a table, we were made very welcome I had a sundat roast my wife opted for a Italian meal both of our meals were perfect although we found that the meals were a bit on the small side, we had to endulge in a pudding to fill us up this is unusual for the both off us, the puddings were also perfect "lovely" we also found the red lion a little expensive for the amount of food you receive on the plate, but what you do get is very nice indeed.

El personal era muy acogedor, nos mostró una mesa fuera (fue una agradable velada) y trajo bebidas y menús mientras te preparan una mesa para nosotros. La comida era increíble, el servicio era excelente, no me puedo quejar de este lugar. Sin duda lo recomiendo y sin duda volveremos :-)

Fuimos con unos amigos 4 de junio. sábado Esta fue nuestra segunda visita, sus primeros y estaban tan impresionados como nosotros. El menú no es extenso, pero la comida es de alta calidad, absolutamente delicioso. El dueño y el personal es amable y profesional y el ambiente especial de ser un pedacito de Italia en un ambiente tradicional pub inglés. Gracias por una velada encantadora.

Visitamos aquí un grupo de 14 en 18 de mayo. Nos pedido nuestras comidas de 3 platos para que sea más fácil para la cocina. Tuvimos una amplia variedad de platos principales entre nosotros de bacalao filete de besugo a. Bistec particularmente puede ser muy variable, pero todo el mundo estaba muy impresionado con la calidad que tenía. Tuve el sillín de conejo, no haber tenido un hijo, ya que el conejo era realmente buena. La comida fue complementado por un superior de chianti. Compartimos una selección de: Quesos piedmonte con miel, frambuesas y pan fresco para el postre. Toda la comida estaba muy bien preparada y presentada. Disfrutamos cada bocado sin la sensación de relleno hasta los topes.

Este fue un acogedor, pero no apretadas, restaurante. El ambiente era relajante y el personal amable y eficiente. La comida era deliciosa y sirve una buena porción. El costo era estándar para un buen 'Carvery Roast". Yo recomendaría este pub como un destino para una gran noche y una comida genial.

Despite its rural English setting there's a truly Italian atmosphere at the Red Lion restaurant generated by Franco the owner (and sometime chef) together with his team. We eat there often and food is always deliciously fresh and well presented.

Llevamos 6 personas a la Red Lion, para celebrar el cumpleaños de nuestro hijo e hija. Era más caro de lo pubs locales recomendado, pero el menú parecía más interesante, y las críticas eran buenas. La mesa estaba al fondo del restaurante, donde 3 de nosotros daba a una pared de ladrillos y la salida de fuego para toda la noche, así que no hay atmósfera o ambiente - un espejo en la pared, al menos han dado la sensación de estar entre otros comensales. Nuestra camarera, aunque encantador, era inexperto y su inglés no era tan bueno, ni rastro del propietario en una noche de sábado. Ciertamente no nos gusta a toda prisa, pero el servicio era muy lento, y la comida era muy normal, nada especial. Las mejillas de ternera era bastante sabrosa, y probablemente el mejor plato de la noche, pero era un trozo de carne y verduras con todas las comidas eran extra. Con 3 platos, vino y café, no era una comida barata, pero nos vinimos pensando un poco decepcionado, y no volveremos - la comida en el árbol o la primavera Olmos Inn es mucho mejor, con mucho más ambiente. Lo que me parece interesante es que el propietario me parece totalmente desinteresados en los comentarios de su restaurante, y comentarios en ninguno de los buenos, ni los seres queridos. uncomplimentary

Came here last month with my family, and it was awful. The food was very expensive and the staff were very rude. When our main meal arrived the waiter just said 'meat'. They didn't know what they were on about and it was awful, I wont be returning.

Hemos estado en el Red Lion varias veces desde su inauguración y nunca me ha decepcionado. El estándar de la comida siempre ha sido excelente si acabamos de tener un plato de pasta que siempre está preparado a la perfección, o una comida de tres platos. Hemos tomado muchos miembros de la familia de Londres y nos quedamos muy impresionados por la calidad de la comida. Nos sentimos muy afortunados de tener un restaurante tan auténticamente italiano en Mortimer. Sin duda merece la pena una visita.

Entramos para tomar algo y comer rápido y nos quedamos realmente impresionados con la comida. Tapas italianas estaban muy sabrosas, pasta desaparecieron y la hamburguesa estaba preparado justo como pedimos y caseros.

A small family meeting, just 4 of us in this beautiful old pub, now an Italian Gastro-pub. Had a very warm welcome, a drink in the bar and moved down into the restaurant area immediately adjacent for lunch. Service was attentive without being intrusive and the food was delicious, beautifully cooked, simple Italian fare with good fresh ingredients. Highly recommended!

I used to visit The Red Lion as a kid, so came for a date night for nostalgic reasons. I pass it every day and couldn't believe how beautifully it has been renovated. The waiters have a genuine Italian charm and a keen knowledge of modern Italian cuisine; the food was superb. The restaurant has maintained its warm country feel but polished with an eloquent finish and it's far enough out that you feel like you're the only ones there. I'd strongly recommend if you're in the area or fancying venturing out of Reading/ Basingstoke.

This was the first time that I had been to The Red Lion Italian Restaurant & Pub,having only recently found out about it completely by chance. I was not disappointed and had a very enjoyable evening eating some great food all served by friendly, attentive, but not intrusive, staff.The wine was good and the obviously freshly prepared food was delicious and served on warm plates - something not all restaurants think to do but it is such an important touch.The Red Lion has a lovely welcoming feel to it and with the fire blazing in the hearth the whole place felt toasty warm. The dining area is naturally divided with original beams into smaller sections with 3/4 tables in each and this helps to enhance the cosy, intimate, atmosphere.I would highly recommend it to other people to try and will definitely be back again soon to try some other tempting morsel from the menu. I imagine it will also be nice to visit in the summer to sit on the terrace, or in the garden at the back.

A lovely looking pub, but unfortunately the tapas menu is hit and miss. Agree chips anemic, and some of the food was cold and not what we expected, all chairs are wonky and the tables very rocky. Staff were rude, when I walked in a said hi to someone behind the bar and he promptly ran away. I had pre-booked to be told as I was ordering of the tapas menu I could only sit in one area. Way too expensive. However I have not tried the evening menu and unfortunately won't due to my experience at lunch.

I though the lunch offering here was quite poor, especially for vegetarians, and the food was over priced. I had a mozzarella baguette, which was OK but the chips that I ordered as a side were anaemic and undercooked. Some of us had fish and chips but the portion size was small, with no extras - no salad, no peas - and at £12.50 I thought it was over priced (and especially compared with other pubs in the area). We did not bother with dessert. I would not come here again but perhaps it is better in the evening when the full Italian menu operates.

Wonderful little Italian pub, cannot recommend enough. Went with family and all very impressed, pasta to die for, and a new menu with interesting mains. Stuffed onion was sublime, the rabbit wrapped in Palma ham incredible, ambiance and service second to none. Well done all, great food. Mmmm

I was invited to the Red Lion for lunch and enjoyed it.We selected the Tapas menu which was varied but not extensive.The dishes were well presented and very tasty, my favorite being the king prawns.For dessert I chose the Tiramasu which was large and the best I have had.Also I had 2 glasses of Bomberro which was up to its usual high standard.We were disapointed that the open fire was not lit on a cold day.

This was our second visit but we were accompanied by two friends who hadn't been before (and they loved it!). Fantastic food and wine with very friendly and attentive service. The food is fairly priced for the quality and there's always an excellent choice (even for me as a Coeliac). Would (and have) highly recommend it!

Last minute booking as unable to go to the Red Lions 'Tasting menu' evening. A table by the open fire, great dishes and a friendly and helpful waiting staff meant it was a great evening out; one that will definitely repeated soon.

I've been to the Red Lion quite a few times over the past 12 months with my grandparents, and every single time we've had a lovely experience. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the food is amazing. The menu is constantly changing, and it's great to be able to try something new each time we go - on my most recent visit I had 3 courses and couldn't fault any of them. Highly recommended, and I look forward to my next visit!

I'm posting this review a tad late but having read a few of the adverse ones I felt I wanted to add my comments ... We had the most amazing meal on Christmas Day, 6 of us, myself, husband and 4 sons. The service excellent, food superb and a lovely atmosphere. I have just booked to take my father for his birthday later this week and also a 'girls' lunch in February.

I was keen to try this place following good reports but was sadly disappointed. We were warmly welcomed on our arrival and shown to our table. The menus didn't appear for a further 5 mins! This revealed a relatively small selection so the key is to get them perfect. In the event the asparagus I had for start was very small, woody and tasteless. The main pasta course was hard with the pasta sticking together - a sign of undercooking. I had hoped it might be saved by the dessert but sadly my selection was unavailable. All in all, disappointing!

I don't normally do this sort of thing but I thought this place needed to be recommend.I would like to say what a beautiful meal we had at this restaurant a few weeks ago. As a family we were out celebrating our daughters engagement and I must say we were not disappointed by the food, wine or service.We were made to feel very welcome and considering there were 3 generation our family there they accommodated all of us.I am local to the area and am looking forward to my next visits! Just had another amazing meal at The Red Lion , I had the sea bass which was cooked to perfection .My husband had the rabbit and thoroughly enjoyed it . We've never had a bad meal there in all our visits! Bearing in mind we've eaten in Michelin star restaurants in various parts of the world , The food is up there with them.I can't recommend this place enough and how lucky are we to have this Italian restaurant close by to us, which we can go to on a school night . Service excellent and the staff are very polite, with a nice relaxed atmosphere . Caroline

My parents stumbled on this restaurant whilst out walking and wanted to return for dinner. We were not disappointed, the location and decor is lovely, staff very friendly and food fabulous. Could not fault any of it and between 4 of us we had a good selection from the menu. We were glad that we had booked as it was busy for a Saturday evening.The gnocchi in Gorgonzola and honey was voted the best starter closely followed by the tuna carpaccio and Orange. The sea bass was cooked to perfection and perfectly seasoned and lambs cheeks stunning. If you like desserts, this is the place, they were all delicious, but the panna cotta brûlée and tiramisu were voted the best of our group.If you live locally you must give this a try as you will not be disappointed. The wine list is very reasonable with a good selection with prices starting from £16 a bottle. Our 3 course meal with coffees worked out at £29 per head, wine and drinks were on top. So great value for the standard of food, the best we have tried so far in this area.

A large group of walkers who are used to eating a pub lunch arrived with great anticipation, ordering mainly soups or baguettes. For the soups, we were supplied with two slices of white bread toast that could have come from any supermarket sliced loaf. The baguettes came on a plate, sliced in half, but without any garnish as we normally see. There was absolutely no care taken in presentation and yet the meals were priced at the higher end. I chose an Italian starter of sardines that said "with bread". I could see no bread and was told it was in the coating of the two small fish. I was not convinced and the waiter called the manager, who brought along two slices of toast, as per the soups, which arrived after I had finished. As we left I tried to say "Thank You" but the manager just ignored me! Not impressed.

We travelled all over the world and regularly eat in 3 Michelin star restaurants and we can't recommend this place highly enough. No - it's not Michelin stared, and No - it's not in a trendy city centre location but it yes - it DOES offer fantastic food and the service is second to none. The waiters are extremely knowledgable, polite but not pretentious and the food is the best Italian cuisine I've had outside of Rome. There's nothing else comparable in the area and we have become regulars - I've never had a 'local' before. If you want Pizza Express style Italian you'll hate it, not a pizza in sight, but if you want quality Italian cuisine in a lovely setting, served by waiters with a personality, this place is for you.

It was the first time for me in the Red Lion, and I've never heard of it before our colleague decided to make his farewell party gathering there. Such a great discovery for me!!! The food was amazing, the people were nice and polite. Honestly, if you want to treat yourself to a special meal in a warming atmosphere, Red Lion is the place. The food was cooked to a perfection, served nicely. I had venison carpaccio, veal cheek cooked in nebbiolo wine and tiramisu, all was very good. Veal was melting in the mouth, so we even invited chef who is Italian, to ask him how he managed to cook it to such a perfection. Tiramisu was even better than I've ever had in Italy when was living there for a while! Definitely highly recommended for any sort of event, and will be back.

Feeling rather confused regarding an evening spent at ths eatery. A table for two booked easily via phone. We arrived and ordered a bottle of nice white wine and a pint of the finest Peroni from the bar, sevice was exceptional from bar man, we were then shown our table and ordered our starters and main, the waiter Marcus was really helpful and advised in a professional manor. Starters were very nice, mains were also nice, although I would have liked an extra amout of mashed potato, £3.50 for a side of green beans when I have paid £16.00 for veal cheek and a scraping of mash is not what we expect in mortimer as a whole. What I found odd was the woman who arrived wearing a knitted dress delivering drinks to the table next to us, I seriously thought she was a customer, considering the waiters were wearing smart aprons with black trousers and a white shirt. When I then witnessed this woman chewing food behind the bar as if she was in her own kitchen it made me realise I was not in a posh Italian resturant but in a pub in Mortimer which served over priced food. Our deserts were hazelnut fondant's whch would have been enjoyable if served on a warm plate, but, alas, they were served on a cold plate, which, in turn made the fondant cold, which as you can imagine ruined the desert. Will I go back with 15 members of my family for a 75th birthday in two weeks ..... NOPE

Visited this resturant for Christmas meal. The food was very good and good prices. I had been to the Red Lion when it was a public house and it was a very warm and inviting place and even though this has now changed to a resturant it still has the warmth of a good place when you walk in. I would recommend a visit

Just returned home after a wonderful experience (again). Food great,staff attentive, can't fault it!

Very good food just don't expect pizza. A good menu with daily specials. The owner is front of house to ensure everything goes smoothly and our waiter was first-class, friendly and attentive. If the wild boar is n the specials board I heartily recommend it. My wife ate pasta and declared it first-class. This is not a pizza/pasta house but a genuine Italian restaurant. Well worth a visit.

We booked the Red Lion for a surprise Birthday party for 50 guests. Franco and his team were very accommodating and made us feel very welcome. Serving all tables at the same time, the food was of excellent and consistent quality. With a roaring log fire, the restaurant has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Red Lion based on it's food, the service or ambiance. We will certainly be returning.

This Pub is ever bit as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. Simply charming. Beautiful open fires and decorated beautifully. You can't help but feel relaxed and soak up the atmosphere. I have never been to such a welcoming and friendly restaurant. All the staff were exceptional. We held a party here for 50 people and all the food was excellent. My Ragu starter was the best I have had! From the start of booking the venue through to planning and organisation on the day Franco was very helpful and patient, the team couldn't do enough for us and helped make the party absolutely perfect. This would be a great venue for a family meal but equally as fitting for a romantic meal for two. We are planning a repeat visit for christmas eve. Thank you thank you thank you... And the Latte's are to die for!!!

We went to the Red Lion for our mums surprise birthday party. There were fifty guests but Franco and the team were amazing. The food was delicious and the service could not be faulted. Highly recommend for a warm welcome and lovely meal

Recently went to the Red Lion for a meal with my wife and it was a really good experience. the food was of a really high quality, not a lot with each course but just enough. It was really well presented and high quality. Please note it is reasonably expensive but given that it was very good that was understandable.The service was fantastic

I visited with friends in November and was really impressed with both the service and the food. The waiters were relaxed, funny and didn't rush us at any point. I chose from the specials and my fish was cooked to perfection - it literally melted!There was a large wine list too - which the waiters helped us pick from.
