The Rabbit Hole in County Durham

Loved the ambiance in this restaurant - low lighting, beautifully furnished - a really special feeling for a lovely night out. The special menus were a novelty, and the attentive service was superb (eg noticing a light was out on a menu so replacing it without being asked, noting that I had spattered my tip so providing a wipe, again without being asked). Delicious food, lovely atmosphere. The locals are lucky to have this place. Would definitely return if in the area again and will recommend to those we know who visit often.

This is a gem of a restaurant and just on a normal street in Durham. The interior is dark and atmospheric. It feels special as soon as you walk through the door. The decor is plush and the service exceptional. As for the food, off the scale fabulous. You need to book to eat here and you won't be disappointed. Would love to go back but we live in Wiltshire....

Most amazing experience! Me and my partner went for my 36th birthday and it was just perfect from start to finish. We couldn’t get a booked til 9:15pm and they still treat us like the first customers through the door. They were so attentive and we never had to ask for anything. The food was perfect and the best I’ve ever had! The decor and atmosphere was beautiful and I would highly recommend it to anyone!

Came here for early dinner with another couple. Fantastic food, especially the belly pork bites which were sublime. The service was excellent and the atmosphere lovely. This is one of our favourite restaurants.

Having read the reviews I was really looking forward to our family celebration meal. However I felt the place lacked atmosphere - you can't rely on the place being almost pitch black inside to generate "atmosphere". We were in the front room and there was only one other table in use, which probably contributed to us feeling this way. The food was good, but not outstanding and very pricey. The service however was excellent.

We visited your restaurant for the 9:30 PM seating on May 10th to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. While the ambiance and service were pleasant and the staff was attentive, unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the quality of the food. The crispy beef was cold, overly tough, and seemed to have been sitting for a while. Similarly, the prawns were served cold as well. Given that this was meant to be a special occasion, the dining experience did not meet our expectations and left us quite dissatisfied. We’re sharing this feedback in the hope that it will help improve the consistency of your dishes and ensure that future guests, especially those celebrating meaningful occasions, do not encounter a similar experience.

Beautiful restaurant with very good food and ample portions. Friendly attentive staff. We shared dim sum, pudding duck, Singapore noodles, crispy pork, and ribs. Each was tasty.

Great Cantonese restaurant, food is fantastic if a bit pricey. Staff are very attentive and friendly. Only street parking which can be tricky when busy. Well worth a visit.

Stopped here on our way to Durham. An absolute find. The outside of the building did not do it justice. Once you step inside it felt almost magical. From menus that light up when you open them, beautiful decor, to fabulous food, it was a treat!

We took our friends here to celebrate their special birthdays and the staff made it a wonderfully successful evening. The service was excellent with enough chat to make us feel valued. The food was delicious and the surprise birthday desserts made a fitting end to a delightful evening.

The Rabbit Hole provides a great all round experience. The elegant decor and dim lighting provide a wonderful atmosphere. The staff were brilliant and attentive, and of course, the food was extremely good. We picked numerous starters instead of mains and were not disappointed. With the Pork Belly and Lettuce Parcels being the real standouts! Whilst on the pricier side, you get an experience to match and it’s a must visit in Durham!

Visited the Rabbit Hole last month and was not left disappointed! The restaurant staff were very welcoming and friendly, which added to the fantastic atmosphere, and the food was incredible, especially for Vegetarian options! Will definitely be returning for another visit!

Excellent food. Small intimate place with 1920's Decor Shanghai supper club atmosphere with subtle jazz music. Essential to book. Limited meter street parking.

I visited on a Saturday around 5pm. The decor and atmosphere is first rate, the service was outstanding as was the food. Not a cheap restaurant but well worth paying a little more than normal for.

Such a cozy quaint place, excellent service from the moment me and my wife arrived. My wife had the Duck fried rice and I had the sweet chilli shredded beef, both decisions tasted and cooked well. Food was exceptional and classic cuisine. Would highly recommend this up and coming gem in Durham.

Family celebration went for the early bird - all very nice , decor and ambiance made it , food was lovely though I’ve had as nice for cheaper 😉 however no complaints and would revisit for sure

Truly an opulent place. Made us feel very special. I will definitely go there again if I go to Durham. The oysters were huge. What Truly what stood out is the monk fish ghai red curry. Highly recommend it. By the way the main courses are huge it's worth sharing. Very nice staff

Saltiest food I’ve ever tasted, to the point I even vomited after two mouthfuls of the main. The explanation was that the chef is so experienced that they don’t measure the amount of salt they use. My partner and I are still drinking gallons of water as we speak. Such a shame as the atmosphere was great, quick service and the starters were lovely.

We visited Rabbit Hole once again, and as usual the food and service were outstanding. It was Valentine's weekend so food took a little longer than usual, but nothing crazy! We had the Dim Sum Tower and the Hoi Sin Shin Beef for our starters which were excellent, and the Special Fried Rice, Satay Chicken with egg fried rice and some Salt & Pepper Chips for our mains. Each dish was delicious, and the portions were quite generous - I'll be having the satay chicken for lunch tomorrow! Service was also very good, they take used plates and fill up water glasses at speed, and everything is just very seamless. Overall it was a fantastic visit, and for the 2 starters, 2 drinks, 2 mains plus the rice and chips we paid around £90 which is very reasonable based on the quality of the food. We will definitely be back again!

FOOD POISONING. Went to celebrate my Brothers and Dads birthday. Building was nice and decor was cool. The food was completely mediocre. I wish I’d known this before ordering OYSTERS!!! If you do not steer clear of this restaurant, absolutely do not risk the Seafood. We ordered the three oysters, I had one and my brother had two. We spent the next days off of work and considered going to A&E. Completely irresponsible and what a way to ruin an occasion. We’ve contacted the restaurant to ensure they DO NOT sell those Osysters to anyone else, as we only had 1 and 2 each and we suffered BADLY. Disappointing and will most certainly never return.

We got a voucher off my sisters for Christmas for The Rabbit Hole, so booked our self in for last night, arrived and the restaurant is beautiful and so classy, the service is impeccable. We ordered far too much food. Never tried oysters so had those with a chilli hot sauce; very wary but loved them. Edamame peas as an extra, We then had chilli and prawn dish which was Devine and duck pancakes, the meat was perfect and so tender, for main we had crispy chilli beef again absolutely perfect so tasty and well cooked, and three treasure chow mein this was beautiful- it had duck pork and beef in it, the beef was cooked 2 ways and was my favourite dish. The mains we couldn’t finish so cheekily asked if we could take it home which they happily obliged. To finish I had a white rabbit cocktail and chris had a whisky he’s wanted to try for years Toki Suntory. Both of us left very happy and very full 10/10

Wow 🙌🙌 New years eve , we visited thé rabbit Hole and what a experience. From thé moment you set foot in the door the service is impeccable 👌. We had chicken and sweetcorn soup to start . Followed by a chow mein dish , curry dish , fried rice and salt & pepper fries . Everything was absolutely beautiful 😍 A few cheeky cocktails glass of wine . 🍷 The whole evening was faultless. Fabulous staff . Highly recommended. One of the nicest meals we’ve had .

From start to finish everything was easy … the booking, organisation, our various requests for the birthday celebration…nothing was too much trouble. We dined here 7:12:24 the atmosphere is very nice and the food was Exquisite , the menu has a wide selection and we were not disappointed, the lamb rendang was my favourite the spices were enough and it was not to hot 🥵 of a dish . The decor was quaint and we will certainly go back .

Short walk from town to this delightful restaurant. Excellent welcome and fantastic service. Delicious food and they coped with all the changes we requested (vegetarian versions of some dishes and extra noodles) without any problems. Would certainly visit again.

Perhaps the classiest Chinese I have visited. Stylish interior, crisp linen, solid cutlery and top class service. The food tops it all, extremely innovative take on Chinese classics. Must try the shrimp and squid tempura. Unusual crunchy crispy skin pork. But every dish actually designed to shine even the desserts. Can recommend but book ahead.

We went to The Rabbit Hole for food as part of our work Christmas night out. The food was AMAZING! So tasty and good portion size - we came away feeling full but not overstuffed. The service was also fantastic with no hanging around for food or to have our drinks topped up. I particularly liked how they kept our water glasses topped up as well as the other drinks, which is such a rarity. We also were given time to enjoy our meal with not being rushed out. Will definitely go back!

Booked a dinner for my birthday with a friend on recommendation - I trusted her so took no time to look up the restaurant or menu before going. Not sure why I’ve not been here before? It’s such a quirky little place with the speakeasy entrance, low lighting and well thought out decor. Love the little touches, like the light up menu too. The staff are very attentive and the service was great. We had spring rolls and spare ribs to start. Followed by satay chicken, king prawn Kung pao stir fry, rice and broccoli & green beans - with a few glasses of wine! Everything was really tasty and good portion sizes. A real gem 💎

Loved the interior. We had a great table and were really pleased with the food and service. Prawn toast, duck pancakes and spring roll starters were all delicious as were the mains. 10% service charge was included which I hadn’t realised so paid an additional 10%. I realised the next day and contacted them and they sent me 10% back which I think is outstsnding service as I don’t think all restaurants would do this

Had the set menu (early bird special, 30£pp). Had 4 courses meals all fairly sized. £5supp for the miso cod (main) and the peking duck (starter). Excellent service. Beautiful decor. Highly recommended.

The rabbit hole is a quirky restaurant, plush decor, reminiscent of shanghai speakeasy/jazz club and we loved the vibe. The food was super tasty (although one of our party found the aubergine dish too spicy). Service was excellent and they also offered to replace the overly spicy dish. This is a special treat option...it isn't cheap but we all felt that it was value for money, given the quality and ambiance.

Absolutely amazing! Our entire experience was 10/10, from service, to food and drinks. We were really surprised at how delicious the meals were. It’s by far the best Asian food we have eaten. I’d highly recommend paying this gem a visit if you’re in the area. We were also very pleasantly surprised with the cost of the meals and drinks.

Amazing food. Had some of the best oysters with a beautiful spicy sauce to accompany them as a starter. The staff were lovely and always made sure our wine glasses were topped, they made us feel so welcome. Our main dishes were superb . Highly recommend

If you want over priced and overly salty food then this is the place for you! Although the atmosphere was up there with a high class restaurant the food sadly did not reach expectation. Think of your generic 3 star hygiene Chinese takeaway but double the salt content. That’s what it was like eating. Nothing wow and certainly nothing that makes me wanna go back. It’s a shame because they have such a great venue but the food really did suck.

I have only looked from the outside looking in. Seems cosy and some how looks like a 🎨 painting by George de la tour The Dice Players with the light shining on the faces.

Very luxurious and, despite being quite expensive, worth every penny. Great atmosphere in a unique lay out unlike any other Chinese restaurant that I have visited. The food and service was first class despite a mix up with main meal dishes being served with starters. Highly recommended.

Absolutely marvelous food and service. And a note to the waiting staff. There were a few awkward tables around me that had additional needs and additional questions and not all of them we're put over politely or kindly. I was very impressed at how the staff dealt with the issues that were raised and the manner in which they dealt with them. Top marks for dealing with awkward customer!

This restaurant is deceptively large and had a wonderful atmosphere, perfect for a date night. The food was so incredibly good. The online reviews were correct. I had the best egg fried rice I've ever had, and I have lived in Asia for 10 years. It was so delicately flavoured and moreish. I also had the crispy shredded beef main which was amazing. The dumpling starter was delicious too. Great cocktails as well.

I regret not having been able to try more dishes. I keep being stunned by the great quality of food in Durham. Dishes at the Rabbit don't seem greatly adjusted for the West, which is always welcome, but they also don't take shortcuts on ingredients. The atmosphere here was also particularly calming, music is smooth and not too loud to converse, temperature, decor, and general feel are warm and comfortable. Service attentive while not overbearing. Truly a great end to end experience!

Booked early as it very popular. Occasion was my daughters 14th Birthday. Daughter started with the Hot N Sour Duck soup and the other three of us shared a Dim Sum Tower, King Prawns and Prawn Toast. All of this was absolutely beautiful. The prawns came on a bed of lettuce and had a spicy kick, absolutely delicious. For the main course, we had a noodle dish which came with several different meats, a special fried rice, King Prawn in black bean and a satay chicken. My partners only ‘complaint’ was that she couldn’t finish the chicken as she was full. The service was excellent as always and although I didn’t inform the restaurant upon booking that it was for a birthday, when they found out they brought a dessert for my daughter and sang Happy Birthday. Really nice touch. When the bill arrived it was pointed out that there is already a 10% service charge added which was absolutely fine with me. Very good service for them to point this out.

I have visited rabbit hole couple times for dinner, food is absolutely unreal. my favourites are the miso cod, and the fried custard bun tastes amazing. all the staff were incredibly welcoming, friendly and attentive, making sure we have every thing we needed. i had a wonderful experience each time i dined here and i would def go back if i’m back in durham!!

From start to finish the service was excellent the meal was one off the best quality meals I've had in a lot of years I could not fault anything about the whole experience the food was absolutely delicious well done to all the staff and chefs your doing a tremendous job and will be back very soon

We booked "Down The Rabbit Hole" for a special occasion (anniversary dinner) on the recommendation of friends. We had a lovely evening - it's such a lovely restaurant, quirky and stylish, but the food is also excellent. A very different menu and a great selection. Staff were welcoming, very efficient and that added to the success of our visit. We would definitely return and recommend this to friends. Thanks to everyone front of house and in the kitchen!

Don’t go there if you want Chinese food, not Chinese-style food. They charge a bowl of rice for 4 pounds?!

Great staters, great setting. Service excellent. The states were good. One dish was dry - breast chicken in the black bean which was a shame given the price. We did flag this but wasn’t met with much appreciation and , a little arrogance of the manager and suggested that the service charge be dropped, the service was good, and I thought that was voluntary anyway! Anyway. Maybe we were unlucky.

Easily the best Asian/Chinese style food in the city with fantastic staff and ambiance. The back lit menu's are a game changer for anyone with poor sight. Some of the best belly pork I have ever had, they do this dish phenomenally well, who ever cooks this knows their game.

Hidden gem in Durham. Superb food with excellent service.

Food was nice but not as outstanding as you would expect for the price you’re paying. The atmosphere when you first enter is great, until you are then seated and realise the arrangement of the seats is quite cramped and you almost feel like you’re in the way of the staff moving past. We did visit as a couple, and I imagine visiting with a bigger party and being seated in a less traffic busy area would have improved the experience. Service was very efficient, as you would expect when 3 to 4 people are walking past every few minutes. If you’re looking for a quiet meal I would suggest booking somewhere else.

The Rabbit Hole is consistently amazing. My favourite restaurant in Durham, and it's not even close. They were brilliant for my graduation dinner, as they always have been! Wonderful food and excellent service - I really love this place!

Superior Chinese restaurant with varied and interesting menu

We had an excellent lunch at the Rabbit Hole. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, we really enjoyed the Dim Sum tower as a starter to share. We will definitely be returning.
