We very much enjoyed dinner at this cosy place with friendly staff and excellent food. Our dinner included an absolutely delicious mackerel and an outstanding burger. They were so kind to exchange fries for a side salad on our request. We enjoyed non-alcoholic beverages, including cocktails.

Never been here before - 100% recommend here. The service was fabulous special mention to Tiarna (apologies if I've spelt wrongly). And also the guy in a white shirt, never got his name. Food - I had beef cheeks, the boss had a Caesar salad, and my wee girl had the kids burger. Sides of chips, champ, garlic chips, didn't get the pear and blue cheese salad as I had ordered. This was taken off the bill. Dessert- the girls had lemon posset and kids ice cream - I had the Bushmills Drinks - the good lady had Gin of the week which she loved , had 2 Guinness which was tasty, finished night off with 21yr old Bushmills which honestly is the best of the Bushmills range, coke zero for the wee girl. The ambience was lovely, the staff were very attentive, and when I asked for cheese board which wasn't on the menu, Tiairna checked with white shirt guy, and yep no problem! I will only ever say good things about this place, food , service, decor, staff highly recommended you should go here.

Disappointing, while our starter and main course were delicious, our meals took a long time to come, we waited for 30 minutes for the waitress to come with the dessert menu and more drinks, in the end we gave up paid our bill and left. While the seemed to be a lot of staff clearing tables and bringing drinks only 2 people were actually taking meal orders.

Terrific pun fare and friendly service. We arrived on a Friday night without a reservation - suggestion from local B&B - and were seated without delay despite the restaurant being busy. We had fish and chips and a chicken dish; both were very good.

Called in for lunch, hadn’t booked but seated very promptly by staff. Handed menus by the waitress and were told of the specials etc. Ordered a drink which arrived quickly that’s when the good service ended. Looked at the menu and waited and waited and waited for someone to take our order. Staff stood at the bar and chatted others wandered about, one in particular knew we wanted to order and ignored us. After about 15 minutes a male waiter who was bringing food out to another table was about to walk back into the bar area when l actually had to say loudly ‘Excuse me can we order some food’, he came over to our table and said ‘certainly’ , he was very nice took the order and our food arrived about 10/15 minutes later. It was good no complaints about that, but once again we were left to sit when we had finished our lunch, staff disappeared again no clearing of plates or offer of dessert. Don’t know what was going on with the staff on our visit but l would be very reluctant to return.

Loved The Poachers Pocket, despite (old) mixed reviews online... 'front of house' prob needs a little work, be good to have a greeter, stood for a few mins when we arrived, not obvious who to speak with - everyone looked busy.. and the lady who did finally approach us - was prob more suited to backroom staff.. unsmiling and unfriendly but couldn't fault the food or service after that... starters and mains all delicious.. would highly recommend...!!!

As usual great food here and good value. However I was concerned about the misuse of masks in the midst of the Covid 19 crises. Several staff wearing them incorrectly with nose exposed or one member of staff walking about with it under his chin. Shame as service and food is great but would make me nervous about returning.I think perhaps more staff training and /or supervision required

Due to lockdown, we got takeaway from the Poachers Pocket. Takeaway is available on Friday and Saturday nights. You need to order in advance through their website. You need to collect the order, however this is contactless which is great. When you order in advance, you select a time slot for your collection and you give them your name and car registration details. When you arrive you telephone them to let them know your outside, and they place your order in your boot. We ordered chicken wings and pizzas. The food was very tasty and excellent value for money. A lot cheaper than the restaurant prices. Everything was fresh and well made, so tasty. I would definitely recommend it for a treat. The only tip I would give is that you need to order early in order to get a time slot, as it’s very popular.

Excellent! They have a good wine list and an extensive whiskey/whisky and gin range. The staff were very friendly and professional in all their dealings. All in all a very good value visit we will be back and can recommend The Poachers Pocket for a great meal and service..

During a visit yesterday evening I was left feeling embarrassed and belittled by the restuarants allergen policy. Having a severe nut allergy means that ordering desserts in restuarants has always been a tricky task for me and having scanned the menu at the Poachers Pocket it quickly became clear that the "selection of ice-creams and sorbet" was the safest option. It was at this point I informed the waiter of my allergy and he informed me that he didn't think it contained nuts but that he would check. Around ten minutes later I was then presented with the ice-cream along with a cookie which had not been listed on the menu. When I asked the waitress to check if the cookie contained nuts she returned staying that the recipe did not but obviously they couldn't guarantee no traces of nuts. Having suffered from a nut allergy for 20 years, this is standard practice in restuarants and an assurance that I 100% accept and understand. However, immediately following this the waitress produced a pen and a slip of paper which she asked me to sign. This was essentially a wavier stating that I accepted responsibility if I was to have an allergic reaction as I was made aware that there may be traces of allergens in my food. Mortified and with the waitress standing over me, I signed this, a decision that in hindsight I regret. I have never been made to sign any form of disclaimer because of my allergy and I should not have to for a number of reasons:1) Not only was I made to feel different from everyone at the table but I was left feeling that my allergy was a major inconvenience and that if I was to have a reaction, the restuarant were more concerned about whether I sued than my well-being.2) The disclaimer essentially passes the blame onto the customer and suggests that the restuarant can be less vigilant in their preparation of food for this reason which is extremely worrying.3) When I questioned a waiter at the end of the meal about the allergy disclaimer he claimed that this was purely so that the kitchen had a record of my allergy. This makes sense to me in theory but in practice I was given the slip of paper after I had been served my dessert. If this was the case then everyone at the table should have been asked at the start of the evening if they had any dietary requirements. He also stated that they had started to use the disclaimers after a huge insurance claim which I am assuming was the result of a customer suffering from an allergic reaction. 4) Instead of passing the blame the restuarant should focus more on making their menu more transparent and clear. I ordered the ice-cream because I believed it was the safest option yet what I was presented with was ice-cream with a cookie stuck in the middle of it.I understand allergens are a tricky business for any food place but I feel that what I experienced at the Poachers Pocket completely missed the mark. I already feel awkward and embarrassed when I have to ask about the ingredients in menu options but to then be made to sign something in front of the entire table, essentially promising that I won't sue if I happen to fall ill is patrionising and belittling. Furthermore the restuarant has a full Vegetarian and Vegan menu available. Are these diners asked to sign a disclaimer? And if they are not, how can the restuarant take care to assure that their meals are carefully prepared with no cross-contamination yet they clearly cannot take the same measures to accomodate a customer with a health issue?A better understanding of food allergies/training in food allergies and a more understanding and compassionate approach was needed here. My family and I will not be back and I would strongly suggest that anyone with a food allergy avoids this restuarant at all costs.

During our stay in La Mon we decided to try the Poachers Pocket for an evening meal and what a meal it was. I tried the fish with triple cooked chips and mushy peas, delicious. My fiancée had the salted chilli chicken with triple cooked chips and pepper sauce, best she’s ever had she claimed. Dessert next with myself trying the sticky toffee pudding, on my lord unbelievably delicious. She had the ice cream sorbet selection which went down a treat. Fantastic wee place to visit, friendly, attentive staff from you enter the restaurant until you leave, all smiling making for a perfect relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely be back and highly recommend trying for yourself.

My husband and I were at the Poachers Pocket recently for a wee meal out. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful and a cosy atmosphere. All staff were lovely... However, we ordered from the "pub classics" menu and although the food we got was very tasty, the portions were extremely small... As in, starter sized. I got the fish pie and the dish that it was in was about 4 inches in diameter if that, inclusive of the fish and mash on top. With 2 smalls bits of carrot and broccoli beside it. To me, it was not worth £12. My husband got the sausages and mash, again, very tasty, but small portion of food for the price. In comparison to other eateries, not worth the money, which is a shame, as we enjoyed what we ate. But we left feeling very disappointed and hungry.

The service was lovely and our table had been booked so all was well. We were there at lunch time and it was quite busy. The staff are very nice and very kind, helpful etc. The food, however, was massively underwhelming. I got a burger, but didn’t want the bun or chips. I asked for a side salad instead and when it came I got a nice burger with cheese, and on the side 3 leaves of baby gem lettuce, 2 thin slices of tomato and half a raw red onion. It still cost full price! They are evidently not good at substituting things for dietary requirements. Everyone was a bit disappointed with their portions for the price.

Nicely presented, homely feel, cosy fire, smile on entry - all good. I ordered the Christmas fare - Turkey, ham - selection of winter vegetables - £18 not cheap. Thus I was expecting a hearty plate for a cold winters day. Unfortunately when the plate arrived I have to say I was disappointed. Half palm size slice of ham and a processed 'roll' of white turkey (not a nicely carved slice). Apart from gravy this was all that was on the plate. The selection of winter veg came in a couple of little cast iron dishes about 3 inches diameter. There was ONE roast potato, approx THREE brussel sprouts, half a spoonful of mash and half a bowl of red cabbage. Come on guys you can do better than this for £18 !!!!

Being situated very close to Strangford Lough you might expect that it would cater exclusive for the fish lover. Diners like myself who always look at the seafood offering will always find something to tempt me away from the chicken or beef dishes. Had to wait a few minutes before anyone approached us to be seated, also noticed another couple later waiting even longer than we were, need to be a bit more attentive at reception. Wait in between courses was quite lengthy, service was slow and we had to get someone's attention for our drinks to be refilled, no one came and asked us if we needed more. The food was nice, side veg portions very small and although I quite like them cooked Al Dente, the veg was rock hard. Overall it was a good meal, but doubtful if I would go out of my way to return.

Oh what a lovely evening. Friendly, attentive and chatty staff. We had booked for a family birthday, brought a cake and I can honestly say they dressed and presented it brilliantly for a shop bought cheap one. Starters of open prawn, soup and mixed breads were lovely with big portions. Each of us enjoyed our mains overall, chicken in mushroom sauce, fish and chips, chicken bruchetta and surf and turf. The only little niggle, it was a tiny piece of steak (it did say 5 oz) but with a big lump of fat I'd say more like 3, scampi was three little pieces and the pepper sauce was runny? Top marks to the waiting team, has there been a change in cooking staff or are they looking to improve their GP?

On Saturday 13th July myself and two friends arrived for a 6pm booking in the restaurant, when we checked in we were taken through a very crowded and noisy public bar which we had to push our way through to a part of the complex that I would class as a dining area for the public bar. It was bright and airy, however the table that we were seated at had bench seats, which made it difficult to get in and out of and also my side of the table was extremely tight, with my stomach right up against the edge of the table which was extremely uncomfortable. Also, during the our time at the table we could hear the noise and the occasional burst of singing coming from the bar area. I am practically deaf in one ear and the other one is not 100% and I could hear the noise loud and clear. When the booking was made we were not told that our table was going to be in this part of the complex. This did not add to the fine dining experience I have had here before and as I thought we in part of the public bar we were still charged restaurant prices for our meal. We paid £120 for a not so good dining experience.

The manageress made so much noise banging chairs at neighbouring empty tables we took the hint and left the restaurant. I did not think 9.30pm was late for a group of diners to be enjoying some social time...especially since no-one was looking our table. Ate in the restaurant last night, with my family, celebrating the graduation of our eldest daughter, who has a garlic allergy.Understandably, we wanted the experience to be an enjoyable one. We weren’t disappointed. On our arrival, the staff remembered that she couldn’t eat garlic and, in stark contrast to many restaurants, had a comprehensive, separate menu, designed specifically for anyone with such an allergy. Usually the extent of accommodating her allergy is to offer a sauce-free steak! All the meals were delicious and I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

While visiting Comber friends, we had dinner last Sunday in the pub. Everyone thought the food was excellent! I had the steak sandwich and it was very good. Being from the States, we loved the atmosphere of our friends enjoying the camaraderie with the other local patrons. The staff made us feel very welcomed. Lovely place!

First time my wife and I have been here ever which is a little shameful but wow the food was fabulous and the service seamless. The Chowder might be a little creamier - the sauce had a bite to it but the ingredients had a wonderful blend of crunchiness and the soft fish. The local Peter Hannan steak needs no reference from me - it was handsomely accompanied by buttered comber earlies and a vegetable salad tossed in a beautiful aromatic oil and the rest of the sides were delightfully seasoned. My wife had a slab of pork belly that just melted in your mouth followed by her favourite dessert pannacotta served with delicious mini sugared doughnuts. Wonderful Fathers Day gift from my wife.

We planned a large family event, a 90 birthday meal. The management and staff were brilliant. They engaged with us from the outset, making suggestions and preparing menus. Nothing was to much trouble.

Visiting on a Friday night we decided to have a drink in the bar before going through to eat. There was a really great atmosphere in the busy bar, which is obviously a favourite with the locals, and after our drinks we headed into supper. Poachers Chicken Wings & the Crispy Ham Hock Terrine were absolutely delicious starters followed by the Roast Salmon and the Sugar Coated Pork Chop, from the special daily menu. I had duck fat chips with the chop and have to say, I'd return for these alone...amazing!!! It's nice to see casual dining like this where couples, families and friends were all enjoying themselves. The service wasn't as good as the food but that'd not stop us from returning.

We were driving by this restaurant on a Sunday evening and decided to stop. It was crazy busy but both ladies I dealt with were very pleasant and managed to get us a table for 5 after a small wait. Food was absolutely delicious. I have a crazy 3 year old and there is a great outdoor area with seats. I ate out there with him and it was great as I didn’t feel like I was ruining anyone else’s experience. I will definitely be going back .

Was in today with the Fiancée today for a late lunch, we called up and booked as it was busy, arrived and were seated in good time, we were given menus for food and drink and didn’t see anyone for a good 10 minutes, ordered food and drinks at the same time, Sirloin Steak for me and Pork Belly for the better half, food was out in good time and I have to say it was absolutely delicious, few small issues with service, had to ask for a steak knife and subsequent drinks were slow in coming and after dinner coffee was very slow in coming (forgotten about most likely), had to ask a second time. Overall, we’d definitely go back, food was excellent and not small portions, service was slightly lacking but not terrible really. Solid 8/10

Visited today for lunch with family. It was our first time at the Poacher's Pocket. First impressions were good. Nicely presented country pub with bright and airy dining area. Food and service were both excellent and I thought it was reasonably priced for what we had. My wife and I both agreed that we'd like to return for another meal and we would recommend to our friends.

Been to this place twice and had the same experience on both occasions. Staff are friendly, food is good, but service is slow and a bit disjointed. There is a sense that you have to ask for things, such as additional drinks, desert menus etc rather than staff be tuned in to what’s going on. If the service improved this could be a great restaurant.

At best can be described as mediocre. Table for two, set right beside to large family groups with screaming kids. Dinner a big disappointment, ordered beef, no Yorkshire pudding , told chef added something extra to plate!! Must have missed that! Then charged £3 for asking for cauliflower cheese, the portion provided for two wouldn't have filled a tablespoon. Go elsewhere not worth the £70+ bill at the end of a just okay meal and service!

This is a very busy restaurant so definitely book. The menu has a good range of starters and main courses and you have options for small or large plates. There is a “Daily Specials” board on your table and staff are happy to explain any queries about the dishes. There is a good atmosphere in the restaurant and tables are not too crowded together. If you like goat’s cheese the starter is delicious, soft whipped cheese with a creamy flavour. I’d be happy to eat here again.

Today we paid our first visit to the Poachers Pocket after meaning to try here for a while. We had heard lots of good things and we weren’t disappointed, it was outstanding! Venue is lovely and staff were great but the food was out of this world. I had seafood chowder, prawn pasta and sticky toffee pudding. My husband had salt & chilli squid, steak sandwich and salted caramel tart with honeycomb. Nicest food we have had in a long time, cannot recommend enough and are already planning our next visit!

Quite busy for Saturday lunchtime. Full of locals out enjoying themselves. Good menu choices, some standard pub fare but also some more innovative dishes. Also a large variation in sizes making it easy to suit everybody. Attractive children’s menu. Managed GF with no difficulty. Even a GF menu.

Five of us went a few weeks ago the first thing was they got the drinks order mixed up no problem. I would like to say how expensive the main course meal was a burger was just that a burger no filling what so ever even though we asked for some (this by the way is extra) and about 6 chips where was the veg - none. A bottle of red wine was £23.00 the same could be bought in Tescos for a fiver.

Visited today the place was packed but we were given a table in the snug. No roast beef on menu so ordered lamb partner had salmon. Well they must have ran out of food as I was presented with a slop of fat lamb inedible. For two people we were served a tiny bowl with two spoonfuls of mashed and two burnt small roast potatoes. I returned my meal and a member of staff apologised and said had a word with chef and said do you want something else. By this time I had lost my appetite so declined. To be honest they could not have cared less and we were treated appallingly. The restaurant is certainly not cheap and it's a disgrace how they treat their customers.

Want a change of menu? Had Chinese, Indian, Italian, and all the local food? Well what about Dutch? A very interesting and different menu for any meal. Generous helpings of quality food, in Netherlands style; and served by friendly people who give the customer attention and the young waitress who served us was exceedingly nice too. The tray bakes were also delightful, as well as the cooked food. I recommend trying this interesting place for a change; and probably, like me, and those I was with, you will want to return again, and try some other delightful items on the menu.

I never get a bad meal in the salt house. I always try new and different things on the menu and it is always top class and top class service by ally and all the waiting staff really service with a smile and nothing is ever a bother. Eating everything from steak to sea foods and vegetarian dishes the food is absolutely beautiful lovely warm sea side atmosphere in the restaurant. Definitely give this place a go and prices are so reasonable.
