Popped in for late lunch and all four of us were happy with the hearty, home made food of seriously generous proportions! Very welcoming with a nicely thought out dog friendly section as you walk in, our Border Collie was fussed over by all the staff too. Definitely recommend and hope to be back soon!

Delicious Sunday carvery today. Great value and good portions. Friendly staff. Prawn cocktail was tasty. Roast beef, pork, Yorkshire, plenty potatoes and veg all well cooked and delicious. Great choice of dessert, I opted for the cheesecake which was amazing. Would certainly recommend The Old Schoolhouse.

Had and excellent lunch in here today, and will certainly be popping in again soon. I had noticed on another review that they let dogs in which I wasn’t over excited about, but luckily the dog area is kept separate from the ‘normal’ eating area so well done, not everyone likes eating near dogs… I left one star off the Atmosphere but only because the place was almost empty when we were there…

We stopped at The Old School House during our motorhome trip, and it was such a great find. From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel welcome. Although, my wife and I couldn’t help but laugh when the server mentioned they were really busy, and there were only four other people in the whole place and loads of empty tables! It gave us a good chuckle, but they seated us anyway, which we were happy about. It was a chilly day, so we both went for the soup of the day – tomato. Normally, tomato soup doesn’t excite me much, but wow, this one was incredible! You could tell it was freshly made from scratch, and it was packed with flavour. We also shared a brie, cranberry, and ham panini, and it was just perfect – warm, gooey, and delicious. The lady who served us was so lovely and friendly, which just made the experience even better. We left feeling full, happy, and properly warmed up, ready to continue our adventuring. If you’re ever in the area, definitely pop in. Great food, great people!

The haddock was lovely and the service was great. Our 3yr old had his Peppa Pig playing on my wife's phone and nobody bothered with it. Excellent.....

What a great place. Excellent food and great friendly service plus an extra bonus of a few indoor dog friendly tables. Chicken and leek pie was fab as was my wife's haddock and chips. You can't go wrong

We were a party of 3 and hadn't booked. The restaurant was full but the lovely waitress was really helpful and put 2 tables together for us before moving us to a better table. We all had the Caledonian chicken. It was gorgeous. Massive portions, beautifully cooked veg and so very tasty. We got a box to bring home the potatoes and haggis we couldn't finish. A hidden gem and if we lived in the area we would go back again and again.

What a gem of a find. We actually drove past it and went into Kirkcudbright and drove back again. And we're so glad we did. It was lovely inside, very clean and a lovely atmosphere with a bit of background music, and some interesting facts hung on the wall from yester-year! The staff were so lovely. They made you feel very welcome with a smile and a cheery hello. And the food! Oh my goodness, it was amazing. We had the nicest homemade coleslaw we have ever had! And it was all very reasonably priced. The food was definitely worth the money. If you go past this little gem, you should definitely call in because you won't be disappointed.

We drove 25 mins to have something to eat here but found it had closed early at 2pm when their closing time was advertised at 6pm. A poor show and an utter waste of time and money.

The food was first class, party of 5 and no complaints about anything. Staff made space for us even though we hadn't booked. Book in advance to guarantee a table. Happy with the cost also. Great service by all the staff, thank you for a very pleasant experience. We shall return.

We visited this establishment after a group walk nearby. It was the first time for me. I really felt it's staff on the day (26th June) were very friendly and accommodating. They met my enquiry regarding the type of coffee I wanted with patience and a genuine smile.

Quick stop off for a coffee and cake whilst out walking. Absolutely beautiful with lovely surroundings and staff! Highly recommend if you are passing through.

My husband and I had lunch there today, the staff were welcoming and attentive. The food was delicious, I had scampi and chips with peas and tartare sauce which was amazing and the best chips I have ever had in a restaurant. My husband had risotto and he was extremely pleased with his meal. All in all a great experience, we will be back

A lovely, quiet very friendly and inviting roadside cafe serving delicious cakes, sandwiches, soups and salads. Food feels very homemade which is lovely and the staff obviously take pride in what they serve and where they work. Wouldn't hesitate to stop for lunch again if I was passing by.

Popped in for lunch with our two dogs and we enjoyed the service, the building and the food. The dog friendly spot is probably a bit uncomfortable for having lunch though we enjoyed anyway. So if you are in the area it’s a good place

Really liked this restaurant, drive past it quite a few times and finally stopped today . Well worth it . Both meals and Deserts are amazing much better than what we have just had on a cruise ship . Def will return .

Outstanding, the breakfast was unbelievably good. Good quality ingredients cooked to perfection. The only downside was the ginger beer being in a glass as opposed to individual bottles. Dogs are welcome at one end of the building, that is a massive plus. 🐕 Lastly, the negative review from the former pilot on the motorcycle is massively unfair. I visited 2 consecutive days and can confirm the place was very busy. Fortunately, I had the foresight to book.

Such lovely friendly staff. We walked in on a stormy, horrible day, without booking in advance. We were welcomed by a friendly face who went on to explain that they were fully booked. However this lovely lady continued to smile and said she would find a place for us anyway. Nothing was too much trouble. Rarely do you find such good, friendly service. The food was lovely and experiencing a roaring hot open fire just added to the wow experience. Thank you. We will definitely return for more.

Loved every aspect, from the plentyfull parking, the dog friendly area, the staff, the other customers the food and coffees..... So glad we chosen to stop there and will make a point of doing so again. Outstanding in every way.

Loved this place.We didn't book, but the lady that greeted us was so nice and made us feel like we were regulars. The service was outstanding and the food was beautiful. We all opted for the homemade quiche , chips, and salad but had no room for a dessert. Thank you so much for your warm hospitality

What a hidden gem! The best steak & ale pie, lamb cutlets and the lightest syrup sponge, - a deep yellow delicious sponge made with the freshest eggs. It was really busy, book to be sure of a table. Two wood stoves heating the large airy room, lovely & warm. Very clean WC. All round excellent. We will definitely come again.

Have used this place as a watering hole for years travelling to and from Ireland. For the first time ever it was full and we had to sit outside. Luckily weather was OK. Seems booking is now essential. As we can never plan our trips far enough ahead we might have to give this place a miss in the future. A pity as the food is quite good.

We with friends or family have dined at The Old School House on several occasions and we have never been disappointed. We would sincerely recommend it. Mr and Mrs Hough.

OH MY GOD! The best beef and ale pie I have ever had. Great, and I mean great, food. Excellent prices, friendly staff, and superb portions. Staff interacted with everyone on the table, not just the adults, which I really liked. Nothing not to like about the place.

Had a fantastic Father’s Day meal with the family..😂 Although fully booked the staff made us welcome and set a table up outside for us. Carvery lunch was first class. Returning again wouldn’t take much persuading…!!! A little gem in Dumfries and Galloway.

Absolutely outstanding food and service! We had scampi and chips and a Mac & Cheese. It was the best meal I've had out in years, if you're anywhere near go try it out, you'll not be disappointed. The friendly staff is a fabulous bonus, I just wish we lived closer!

We walked in for lunch without a reservation and received a warm and welcoming greeting. We were quickly shown to a table in the busy restaurant. The atmosphere was good. A nice, gentle buzz from content diners. The owners have retained the old rural school feel to the place and have sympathetically remodelled the building to fit the current purpose. The food was fresh, local and plentiful, served promptly,with a smile and a pleasant word. The coleslaw was to die for and the wheaten type bread which my prawns and smoked salmon was served on was amazing. Good food, great service, lovely atmosphere and value for money. What's not to like.

Conveniently situated on the A75 a few miles west of Castle Douglas . Off road parking. Good range of food available from snacks and sandwiches to full meals. Good service. Tables could be laid out a little more imaginatively as it still looks like school!! Very good and will be back.

Not recommended I would give it less than one star if I could Your answer to my review is questionable at best You said you are in the fortunate position to being booked up most days. If this changes you will need the passing trade . I was riding my motorcycle both times I visited, Both times could not get a seat. I am a retired airline pilot I am sure if I was dressed in different attire and not on my motorcycle I would have got a seat

NO EATING OUTDOORS We arrived before 1pm, my husband went in side to ask if our small dog was allowed in. A lady came back out with him after holding the door for him as he was in a wheelchair. We were told there were only 2 spaces for dogs in the lounge. We asked if we could eat outside and she said no. They weren't doing outdoor food. Even though there is a sign on the wall telling you to go to the bar to order food if you want to eat outside. Very disappointing.

Used to be a lovely stopover on the way to and from the ferry but due to poor organisation, which contributes to travellers being turned away, and poor opening times it's a place to be avoided. Goto the National Trust cafe (free to eat) up the road for better service.

One of the best places to eat in this area. Food is absolutely fantastic - not overpriced, well presented, locally sourced, freshly cooked and served wit a smile every time. Plenty of choice for both meat and non-meat eaters. Staff are friendly and always happy to have a wee chat and a laugh. It's dog friendly. I think dogs are only allowed near the entrance and not the main sitting area, which is good. I like dogs, but not a fan of them being allowed in restaurants, but that's just my opinion. Still one of the best places to eat with a good, chilled atmosphere. Good portion sizes. Cakes are delicious. Two log burners give off plenty of heat on cooler days. Booking is strongly recommended.

Had the carvery, everything was Luke warm. This is our third visit and enjoyed our meals previously, Think we just picked the wrong option. Will go back, but not for carvery, Sorry.

We were here today as a group of 7 and every meal was cooked and presented to perfection. Everything was fresh and hot. The service was also second to none! A fantastic meal to celebrate a special occasion, we will return!

One of best restaurants I have dined in. Food was all local produce and service was excellent. The only complaint I had was that the main course was so large that I was unable to try one of their sweets that also looked delicious.

What can i say except by tomorrow, I will have been there three times in 10 days. Enough said.

Only stopped for a coffee on a hectic business day, but it was a great stop and a great cup of coffee. Looked at the menu and it looks great and will be worth a second visit, and more. Neat and tidy inside and the toilets were clean and fresh. Great folks behind the counter too. Lots of smiles 😃

Stopped by for afternoon coffee on our way to Portpatrick. Apparently it has changed ownership since our last visit ( which was pre-covid). The dining area has been extended and a couple of log burning stoves installed, which gave a lovely homely touch. The coffees and cakes were good, the staff attentive, and the toilets exceptionally clean! Perfect break to our journey.
