Friendly traditional pub, real ales and great selection of other drinks. Really friendly staff, & cheeky banter. Best of all is the food, and especially the Sunday Roasts - best I’ve had in Colchester and I’ve tried most of them, I can’t praise it highly enough, and huge portions too. Proper home cooked food, like your Gran used to make. Great homemade pies too, and plenty of other choices. Love it

Unfortunately went when the kitchen was closed as I was looking forward to trying the homemade pies. But my consolation prize was a nice pint in a lovely pub. Very interesting story behind the name as well.

Historic building which holds a lot of charm. Has spacious beer garden and two areas either side of bar. One of which could be used for functions. Good selection of ales and staff were very friendly. A proper pub as we like to say. Dog friendly and would go back.

I was verbally assaulted in this pub and the staff didn’t assist in any way because apparently it isn’t their job if another customer refers to another visibly disabled customer using an ablest slur. It’s a shame because it is in a great location and I would have definitely gone back to try the food.

We hired the function room for our engagement party and we had the best time! As there was a lot of us (around 60 guests) they very kindly allowed us to have sole use of the function room (where we played our own music) but also have sole use to one side of the bar which worked amazingly for some of the guests that preferred to have a quieter seat inside near the fire. We also had our own outside area which was also made so much nicer by them having fire pits going for us! All of the staff were so attentive on the lead up to our celebration and on the night, we couldn’t be more grateful to them for helping us have such a special evening! I’m gutted that I didn’t get more photos of the function room as it looked so pretty with all of the fairy lights on, and we were able to decorate it as we wanted! Thank you so much Lisa and the team!

This pub is tucked away, so you really wouldn't know it was there unless you was looking for it. Nice selection of drinks available, plenty of seating and outside seating space as well (and a bit quieter than some of the other pubs near by as it's tucked away!) Service was good and it seemed like a really chilled out pub. The pub signage has a picture of a bomb on it - the reason of which is answered on the wall inside the pub... (we thought it was unusual signage!)

I last visited the New Inn pre -Covid, and the pub has since changed hands. I had wanted to try it again, so with family up in Colchester for the weekend, I suggested we have our Sunday lunch here, before their long drive home. This turned out to be the perfect choice! The sun was shining, so we chose to sit outside in the attractive, sheltered garden. The food took a while to arrive, and was well worth the wait! The roast beef was served in generous slices and beautifully medium-rare, each with a dish of creamed horseradish, and the roast lamb with mint sauce. A great selection of very tasty vegetables and home-made Yorkshire puddings provided the perfect accompaniments on the plate. The additional order of a dish of creamy Dauphinoise potatoes between us, gave an extra treat. The potatoes used were all delicious and sweet, (totally unlike those boring, bland varieties too frequently used in other establishments). We left happily satisfied and determined to return very soon! I am so glad that I don't live too far away, so can reasonably regard The New Inn as my 'local'.

Having been to the other pub they own and sampled some of the amazing seafood they have to offer, I thought its only right to try this place out too. Amazing from the start. We were welcomed into a fantastic vibe, welcomed by the landlady who is a really genuinely lovely person.. Served some of the best conditioned real ale I've ever tried. The landlady came over to our table and offered us to put some music on along with everyone else in the bar so everyone got a turn on open jukebox night, was a fantastic idea and vibe created by the people. Myself and my friend were stunned with the amount of people yet the landlord and landlady still managed to get around and speak to people. We will definitely be back for another visit extremely soon... I think I've just found my new local.

As a regular of.many years, I feel.I have to review, given the somewhat disingenuous review further down. I have been a regular for.many years, seen the ups and downs of the pub, and been a proud witness to the many deserved awards the pub has won for its beers and atmosphere. The new management have been in place for less than a month, but DO offer the same welcoming smile that I have come to love about this pub over the years, regardless of management. Perhaps the reviewer further down went in on a quiet night? Even then I am.genuinely surprised to read the new management were not welcoming...I have always found them.to be so. Anyway, the pub is currently having a little facelift.. but the beers are as good as ever, and food back on and rather yummy. This pub is at the heart of the community: the new management deserve support. It's a great pub...I love going there!

This was an amazing pub in Colchester. It took 3 years to build up a great reputation and win many awards but then 3 weeks to go downhill due to personal circumstances. New owners took it over and it does not feel like the same pub. Gone are the friendly bar staff who knew us, what we liked and ones that could pour a proper pint. Drinks we got served had a good finger missing on all drinks. Bingo nights are not what this pub is. Its a Real Ale pub, serving decent, full pints. Maybe we'll try again in a few weeks but we'll see.

Found this through a CAMRA search, took a while to find it (no thanks to Google Maps). It’s slightly out of the main area, had the vibe of being a “local’s pub”. Really good choice of ales and was impressed that they knew which ones were likely to run out (as an ale drinker that means so much). We shared a ploughman’s and chips which with a little more finesse could have been outstanding. Feel really mean criticising as they are a young couple putting their soul into the ales but we felt that the food let them down a bit. But after all that, it appears to be a drinkers pub. So after all that, if you have a passion for real ale, go for it, they know how to look after their ales.

Invited here for Grandmother’s birthday meal. Thankfully we did our research beforehand and realised that parking was limited so car shared with others. One guest got so frustrated with trying to find a space that she gave up and drove home again! The place wasn’t big enough for all of us so we were sat on 3 big separate tables, not their fault but hardly a ‘family’ meal when you’re all sat separately... Table(s) was booked well in advanced, yet food choices were limited because they’d run out of certain meats. The food was beautiful and the portions were generous but the service was slow and some people had finished their meal by the time others arrived! Pudding was limited, there was no actual menu and the waitress didn’t really know what they had or what was in it so we didn’t bother in the end. Prices were reasonable & the facilities were clean. Overall, I just don’t think it was a great choice of venue for so many of us but that isn’t their fault and they tried very hard to make us all feel welcome. Would return again with a smaller group.
