The Old Dunnings Mill in Mid Sussex

Absolutely love this pub/restaurant. Just on the southern outskirts of East Grinstead, excellent for walks and exploring, the pub is large but nevertheless feels warm and welcoming. Lots of cosy ‘nooks’ + a lovely large open seating area. The staff are really nice and attentive and the food has always been delicious when we’ve visited. There’s an outdoor space with tables to the front (fenced from the road) as well as a marquee at the back with comfy outdoor furniture, a large TV where sports events are regularly shown + heaters for the colder evenings. Finally, the pub puts on a great calendar of events which, now we’ve actually moved closer, we’ll definitely try to join in on Really recommend this place.

Sat outside for the first time this year. Only had the "Ham, egg & chips" but thats tender, tasty ham and triple cooked chips ! Recommended as a destination for lunch.

Lovely pub. Food is great, all catered for. Car park can get very full on a weekend. Pub is very large. Also has a childrens play frame and area. River running under the pub , to what would have been the old water mill

Update review Original review was 5 years ago, unfortunately it seems things have changed since then. We came here yesterday for a family celebration, and the meal was atrocious. As we had 15 of us attending, we were asked to pre order our food, this is a good idea as it ensures everybody gets what they want (you would expect). Our meal was booked for 2:30pm, food arrived at 3.30pm. 5 of us had pre ordered Pork Shoulder, only to be served Pork Belly. This was challenged and we were fined off that this was the pork on today, not what we had pre ordered! To add to the insult, the Pork Belly contained no meat, its was pure fat through the cut. Add to this the portion size was small and not special in anyway. This gathering was for my mums 92nd birthday and to be honest was a disaster, real shame for her. The manager did reverse out the Pork Belly costs from the bill, but damage done and I don’t think we will return here next year. Previous Review Came here for Sunday lunch with the family to celebrate my mums birthday. It a lovely setting with a traditional old pub style. The menu is very good and the size of the portions are very generous. The Sunday roast is really nice with the large mix of three carved meats the best choice. Service is very good, with friendly and helpful servers. Excellent place and highly recommend.

Love this place, staff polite and friendly and lovely and relaxing. I have to say if you're local and don't pop in here, you really have missed a gem. The food is great, the staff as I have said are great but to actually take the time and chat to you which in today's world is rare. They engage and give advice, and they also actually care!

We simply had the best party night for my husband’s birthday, thanks to Lisa and her amazing team. We literally just had to turn up and party, Lisa had everything so professionally organised: food, drinks, disco, decorations. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Thank you Lisa and all of you, for making it a night we will always remember as being just brilliant.

Absolutely gorgeous!! I cannot recommend this place enough!! Food was incredible 😋🤤 and you actually get a decent portion!! Such a lovely place to sit outside and enjoy the heat lamps and have the running water with cosy lights definitely will be back

We stopped for lunch after a nice country walk. The service was great, the pub was such a unique space, really quirky with great atmosphere. The food was really delicious and enjoyed every dish we had. They were even able to cater for my food intolerances so I can still have a really good meal. Thank you very much

A good atmosphere especially when you have business meetings. Good coffee. I like this restaurant for this meeting. It would be nice to plan your meetings in such a place

They served up a very varied breakfast menu and the food did not disappoint. Loads of free parking It's a old building with a nice decor. Worth booking if it's a large group

Having joined a group of 30+ to celebrate Christmas with a meal and drinks we found another similarly sized group doing the same. How the kitchen staff managed to deliver with good quality is astounding, well done. Then to cap it all the service was impeccable, smiling happy waiting staff even when some of the group forgot what they had ordered, taking the wrong meal.....soon to be resolved for whoever had lost their meal. A fab evening. Thank you

Party of 25 for a surprise 80th birthday lunch. pre ordered food needed as large group. I’m only commenting what my family (9 persons) had which was 6 roast beef dinners & 3 kids meals, 2 fish n chips , 1 mac n cheese. We all had starters, belly pork bites, crispy squid, & hummus. We all thoroughly enjoyed our food. The service was excellent . We arrived to a beautifully dressed table , they allowed us to do our own decorations & the hospitality was second to none. Would definitely recommend. The only thing I disagree with is the service charge being compulsory. I think it should be up to the customer if they want to leave a tip. I would always leave a tip but I know some are not happy about this .

Theme night of live music. Lovely friendly atmosphere and great night out. In my opinion it's the best pub in the town as the Manager is very involved and takes pride in delivering and exceeding expectations. The staff are well trained and polite. Food is good value for money and of a decent quality but not quite Gastro pub standard, however I would definitely be back to eat again without any hesitation. Would love more live music nights.

Great place for Sunday dinner. Make sure to order the cauliflower cheese,it's a separate dish,and it is really tasty and cheesey,very big servings,great puddings.

Dunnings could be such an amazing pub, but the landlady has such a harsh and brusque attitude. I am not even sure if she is aware of how rudely she comes across when speaking with customers. She seems permanently irritated by customers even existing!! The other staff are just fine and friendly though. Food is just fine - competent pub grub. Beer selection is limited and not particularly modern on the craft beer front.

Me and my partner are camping and the site owner suggested this pub. Really glad we came. The staff are friendly, they have a good choice of drinks, but the star was the food. I had their beef burger and my partner had the chicken burger. Amazingly tasty....and the chips....spot on! If If we're ever in the area again, we'll be stopping in.

I only went to a wedding reception so didn't sample the food. Lovely atmosphere. I would go again.

Where do I start . Tried to book a table for lunch for four. Phoned 5 days before the date we wanted. It was for a Thursday at 1pm. I was told there was no bookings for that day so just turn up! When we arrived the staff told us there were no vacancies even though the restaurant was empty! Confused I was told abruptly the tables were all booked for a BINGO might starting at 7.30pm. I asked why we couldn't have a table and it could be laid up again. Again abruptly told no vacancies all reserved. Won't be returning and what a lot of customers and income lost. RIDICULOUS!

Regularly go here for a networking meeting, fabulous service every time.

Always a good atmosphere, parking is easy off site if the car park is full food good whatever you choose and the Harvey’s Ale is served clear enough to watch television through.

Large old watermill converted to a pub many moons ago. Part of the Harvey's brewey chain of pubs. Various areas with over 18s on the decking. We popped in for the Triple Alliance brewed beer (Harvey's, Burning Sky & Brasserie de la Senne)

I had a lovely meal today the portions were very generous was going to have a dessert but was full and the service was excellent too will definitely be back with family

Food is outstanding for pub food. Service is top notch. Best plouhmans I've ever had . We went for family lunch 2 times so can't give much feedback for the atmosphere.just to say the locals like to look at you , like they know your from out of town. 😬

Terrific sunday roast and amazing service!!

Poor service, as we pre booked a table we were asked to pre order the main course. Menu wasn’t the same as online compared to the in house. On arrival we was given the menu to choose starters but by the time the waitress came to the table there was no time to order as the main was ready. Half hour of waiting. We ordered roast beef, tasteless beef, roast potatoes tasted of cooking oil. Roast chicken was so dry and over cooked it wasn’t edible. When we were asked if the food was ok we replied with our complaint. Manageress was totally dismissive of our complaint stating our plates were emptied so we must have eaten it. She must have ignored the uneaten food returned. On a positive. The meat pie was great plate cleared, fish and chips also great, the salad was also great, all plates cleared.

Was a very busy day due to good weather, with most tables outside occupied, but availability inside. Service by most pleasant waitresses was excellent and the food was good. Prices reasonable. A most enjoyable experience.

Good choice of menu. The ale meat pie was exceptional. Harvey's beer. Clean toilets. Good atmosphere. Children's play area.

We just popped in for a quick drink and dinner. Lovely friendly staff (as always). Highly recommend the hanging chicken kebabs and sea bass fillets.

Megan helped us to arrange a funeral reception for our mother. She met and spoke with my sister and me a few times, and made planning everything so easy. They advised of ways in which we could balance supplying food and drink for an unknown number of attendees with keeping our costs down - which I really appreciated. And on the day itself, they and their team did an excellent job at managing the event with efficiency, smiles and charm. The food came in generous helpings, and was tasty and well-presented. Many thanks to all at the Mill.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch with a couple of friends, we had not seen for a few years. We had a nice greeting, good service and very good Sunday roast dinners. Well recommend. Don't forget the cauliflower cheese, delicious😋.

For me, best pub in East Grinstead: - Traditional, low beam ceilings, log fires - Free, easy parking - Private dining rooms - Linked to Harvey's brewery - Kids play area - Beer garden front, and decking seats at rear - Great food - Always decent service - Food hygiene rating 5 - Dog friendly The only slight downside is the beer garden is not fully secluded / private. Other than that, it's a great pub that takes you back in time.

Met a friend for lunch at Old Dunnings and what a find it turned out to be. Great service and food with a friendly atmosphere. We both chose from the daily special menu and both meals were nicely cooked and presented. Big call out to Toulha our server and Lisa the manager who was very helpful with information. Will definitely be returning.

Amazing food, friendly staff. My friend had birthday but we didn't have plan to celebrate even though I asked for staff for small celebration. They organized cake also sang birthday song for her. She was very happy, she experienced such type of surprise birthday in her life. Me and my friend really enjoyed the food and friendly staff of dunnings mill.Chefs Ramesh, Paul and every staff member are very nice. Me and my friend are highly recommended this pub.

A great new menu. We had the BBQ Beef croquettes to start which were excellent, and great portion size. I had the beef burger which was cooked perfectly.

We were looking around the area for somewhere to have a spot of lunch, and this was the closest place! We walked in after parking around the back and were greated with a smile, we were told to take a seat and they were soon taking our order! We both chose the fish and chips, wow, what a portion! Was lovely and we are planning on returning very soon!

Fantastic local pub. Roast dinners all generous portions and hot. Service excellent. Great time. Only comment would be large table with more People than seats seemed unfair on other clients and the staff.

Good food, the beer was excellent (wide range of bitters from local brewery (Harvey’s Lewes) well kept and properly poured. No idea about the lager.

A huge thanks to the team for hosting a 60+ people event for my dad's 60th. Plenty of good beers on tap and very reasonably priced. They also do a great breakfast!

Food was OK. Main area of improvement is the Sunday roast vegetables. They were really lacking. We asked for a side of veg as an extra which sufficed but didn't impress.

Visited for the first time today. Service prompt and efficient. Great selection of real ales, well kept Sussex best IPA etc. All the food for our party was terrific- loaded Nachos, chicken supreme. Highlight was a freshly prepared Nepalese lamb curry (heat as you prefer) with pilau rice (fresh whole spices) and saag aloo. As good a curry as I’ve ever had in a bespoke curry house. Turns out chef is Nepalese. Thoroughly recommended - they do curry nights apparently.

We held our work Christmas party at Dunnings Mill recently on a rainy December lunchtime. The atmosphere was lovely and Christmassy, all meals were tasty and service excellent. There was no nightmare splitting at the bill at the end as they made this so easy for everyone.

Nine of us had a Christmas meal on Saturday; the food was really excellent and we were given a private room which was a bonus. We found the service given by Katie, Megan and Finn was fantastic. They came in regularly to get us more drinks when we wanted. We were very well looked after and Katie even found me a cushion for my dodgy back. :) A great evening was had by all.

Our first visit with our 3 year old grandson. Excellent family atmosphere. Food really lovely and fresh. Plenty to keep little ones occupied. Will definitely return.

This is a pub where the staff work hard to ensure customers are happy and well satisfied with service received. 21 November 2023 was no exception to previous visits. The decor, atmosphere, cosiness of The Old Dunnings Mill creates a relaxing and warm environment. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal of sea bream and desserts of crumble for one and icecream for the other. The wine and coffee also very good. All served by the delightful, friendly, attentive and professional Grace. Looking forward to our next visit.

Roast dinner rather small compared with other restaurants and more expensive.

Great place to meet up with friends

I hired out the Old Dunnings mill for my 30th birthday. It was the best decision I could have ever made. Lisa and Megan have been incredible from day one with helping me plan my party. I am an events manager by trade so I’m a tough cookie to please, but these guys nailed it. Set up was all done for me and the food (sweet treats was incredible) I had Demi Balloons do my balloon hoop but everything else Lisa guided her team through it. The DJ and atmosphere was incredible. Thankyou for everything you guys done for me. It was maybe the best night I could have asked for.

Love this place, the food used to be a bit questionable but this last visit after years of not going has really wowed me! Loved the food and the service and as always loved the building.

I came yesterday with my children for the Halloween party, despite the pub being busy the atmosphere was good and the service was prompt. We had some food which was incredibly well done, my fussy children ate almost everything and enjoyed it. The staff behind the bar, Kayleigh in particular, were amazing. Everyone was extremely polite, attentive and went above and beyond for each customer. Megan our server was lovely and made sure we had everything that we needed.

Our favourite pub in East Grinstead. You might want to teach your new fella how to pour a proper Guinness though. Free poured, no settling and no head. Food great, friendly staff. Good pub.

I cannot express how completely wonderful the service is here. The food is beyond incredible and all of the staff are so welcoming and loving. I want to say a huge special thank you to chef Ryan as our food was delectable, I’ve never eaten fish and chips so melty in my life. 100% recommend to everyone.

Really lovely old country pub. Staff very friendly and service good. Only down side for me personally this time far too many dogs inside. Had the move to outside table which was fine as it was a lovely day.
