Excellent, home-cooked food, nicely presented. I had smoked haddock fish cake, obviously made in house, with home-cooked hand cut chips and salad garnish. My partner had the lamb shank. Very tasty and enjoyable. Friendly personable staff, excellent service. Don’t miss this gem.

We are staying locally and this is the only place that serves food. No vegetarian options at all ! Really hard to believe in this day and age. My vegetarian wife had a fish pie which was delicious and I had a chicken dish that was ok. You have to accept that this is Scotland so it’s all very basic. We had a dog with us so had to sit in the empty pool room. Zero atmosphere.

We had an early diner here and this pub was still busy. I had the me.t in the mouth fish with black pudding and hubby opted for the chicken highlander (which was a new one on us). Both were delicious and I would struggle to name my favourite. Another table ordered the pue and they looked fantastic. Going on an evening I would book especially on a weekend. Car park adjacent.

The staff were lovely, the pub lovely but the food was not great at all. The kids meals were greasy and bland, the fish over cooked and again not seasoned right. Everything was just meh and cost us nearly £60 for four meals. I’ve had better ready meals. Such a shame as the village is lovely, beach gorgeous and staff so kind but they really need to up their food game.

Read the rules about dogs carefully as we didn’t fancy being corralled in the games room with the pool table (see previous review). It sounded like things had changed and that there was now a special dog area of the bar so we went. First impressions, good. Plenty of character. Bit of a buzz. But what’s this? Upstairs, out the back door, round the corner and into … the pool room. No one else there. No atmosphere. Tatty furniture. Asked for a table inside, took the dog home, delaying the meal. Food ok, service ok, not much for vegetarians unless they eat fish. Don’t think the barman liked us very much.

Very nice pub with a small bar room with seating up a small flight of stairs where food is served. Large dog friendly beer garden to the rear where we ate. Food very good at reasonable prices. Varied menu. Alcohol prices also very reasonable. Plenty of young helpful staff. Very pleased.

We could not fault the food or service. And we are grateful that you were able to fit us in. There was no one eating, when we got there. But why say you are dog friendly pub and then stick people upstairs in a games room. If people had come and played pool.We would have had to leave, as it would have been noisy. We offered to sit in the bar area , but we were told dogs are not allowed in the bar. The choice of food was lovely. And we did have a chuckle over the Garlic bread. It was a slice of bread with garlic butter over it. I suppose we should have had a drink there first to see if it would be suitable. Our fault.

We visited the New Inn during our 4-night stay in Coldingham. It was quiet & we opted to eat in the bar. We both had chicken highlander (chicken stuffed with haggis & wrapped in bacon) covered in sauce with chunky chips & veg. It was very tasty & a good portion size. We followed it with sticky toffee pudding & ice cream which was delicious & a generous portion size. There was a good list of options to choose from on the blackboard & main courses were reasonably priced - definitely worth a visit!

We have eaten here many times but tonight was very disappointing. Presentation was awful! Scampi came in a row on the plate with some chips which weren't great, no salad or peas. Looked like a child had dished it up. My husband had the fish which looked really nice but again no colour on the plate with either side salad or peas. I understand that some people maybe don't want any sides but feel that you should be asking your customers if they would like some. Not worth the money and would think twice about returning.

I called to enquire about Sunday roast and the girl who answered the phone was friendly and helpful and explained that they could sell out before 5pm but the main menu was available until 7:30 pm. She suggested to book for 4:45 so I did. She would inform the chef we wanted the roast. We arrived on time and another couple arrived at the same time though they hadn't booked. We were shown to a table which was right in the way of the waitresses coming up and down the stairs and next to the door out to the beer garden, even though there were more tables available. The other couple were given a better table, were served before us and ordered drinks and Roast dinner. Eventually a girl asked us what we would like to drink. I ordered sparkling water and my husband a pint. I intended having a glass of wine with my dinner. The drinks were brought and we were asked if we were ready to order. Thankfully the roast dinner was still available! After a reasonable wait the meals were brought and a small jug of extra gravy was placed on the table. No communication from the waitress, she was off back down the stairs. So no chance to order wine. The meals were well presented and hot and the vegetables looked fresh and a generous portion of beef which was tender. It seemed strange to have 3 different types of potatoes, mash which wasn't creamy, 1 roasted with a funny taste and 1 boiled with the skin on. The vegetables were al dente. My husband cleared his plate though he would have liked his veg cooked longer, and also ate what I didn't eat so our plates were emptied. A waitress came to ask if we'd finished and took our plates away. She didn't ask if we'd enjoyed our meal, would we like another drink, dessert, coffee nothing just off down the stairs again! We sat digesting our meal and could hear the conversation between staff and a local down in the bar and wondered if anyone would come up to see if we were ok and did we want anything else. Unbelievably no one did! Eventually we went down to see about paying and 2 girls were behind a counter/ bar? One of them told my husband how much we owed and as he was finding the means to pay she put 2 chocolates on the counter but didn't say anything. She gave my husband his change and we left. The management/ owner of this establishment need to teach the young girls the social skills needed to work in the hospitality industry. Also how they can contribute to the profit of the business by offering and encouraging customers to indulge in the food and drinks displayed on the boards! This interaction would greatly enhance the atmosphere, the experience of customers and contribute to the staff enjoying their work and giving them confidence. Also they will get tips! What I learned from this visit is my roast dinner is far superior so save your money, cook at home and enjoy it with a bottle of wine and a nice dessert.

Don't waste your time. We picked Coldingham partly because there was 1 pub that 'claimed' to be dog friendly. We should have listened to other reviews. Checked online. Dog friendly and open to 10pm. Walked 15 minutes along a dark road arrived at 8.45 to be told their 'dog friendly' part of the bar shuts at 9. Lame pathetic excuses followed, ZERO people skills, common sense or initiative. Absolute wet wipes not fit to run a pub. Needless to say we will NEVER go near the place again and all we wanted was 1 drink with 1 small quiet dog. Absolute chocolate fireguard cretins. At least the Anchor states no dogs (though pathetic too). Go to Eyemouth instead, at least there are folk running pubs there with decency, people skills and more than half a brain cell.

We have eaten twice at the New Inn this week, each time taking our Labrador with us. You can take a dog indoors, although the available room is quite small, so booking is definitely advisable. It would be nice if the decor was a bit smarter, but to be honest the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff more than make up for that. The only negative is that vegetarian options are very limited, unless you eat fish. Fortunately my partner does, and she enjoyed both the vegetable gratin and the fish and chips. As soon as we got to the bar, the landlady told us we must wear masks whilst at the bar or moving round. We were fine with that, realising we were in Scotland & not England. However, as the locals started to arrive, without masks! no one was told they must wear a mask! I counted 11 people come into the bar area while we were there & none of them had masks or were asked to wear one. None of the locals even acknowledged we were there. It seems there’s one rule for holiday makers ( or was it because we are English!) and another for the locals. We certainly won’t be returning during our week in the area.

We then walked inland to Coldingham were we found this traditional pub and to our surprise it had customers indoors? The rules here were different from England during this Covid time as you can eat indoors if with a soft drink. So had the steak pie with chips and a small amount of vegetables, there was plentiful steak pieces just not too keen on the puff pastry topping. After we went outside and had a drink of alcohol in the beer garden.

The 5 of the meals arrived and 3 roads were sent back as they were cold and we waited for these and the 6th meal. They returned slightly warmer. The chicken was tough and chewy and sauce lacking of flavour. Everyone said they wouldn't return.

Room was quiet when we entered but 2 groups of 6/7 people in total came in with no regard for others personal space and one ended up sitting shoulder to shoulder with my wife albeit in different directions and stared at menu board above our heads. We both had fish and chips and it was excellent! All fresh, batter was great and the chips were to die for! Chunky, crispy and soft. My only very minor fault were the soft drinks; they came in cans poured into glasses, for the price I’d expect glass bottles. Nothing major though. Would recommend and a very pleasant place to eat and relax in the sun!

Had high hopes for the New Inn but the reality was disappointing. From the moment we entered made to feel like an inconvenience to the staff, while some staff were clearly young and inexperienced the lack of basic customer service was worrying. For example, an item we ordered never turned up and when we queried it we were told it had been scored out on the order, with no explanation or apology as if we were ridiculous for asking. The food is usual pub grub, steak pie, fish and chips which was fine however it’s advertised as an a la carte menu which it isn’t. The food is a non issue compared with the really poor customer service which is unfortunate as really the only choice for eating out in Coldingham.

Lovely restaurant and pub. Staff really helpful and friendly and the food was great. Had a hearty portion of fish and chips one night and went back the following week for the Chicken highlander...both great and big portions. Only downside was my friend being veggie and could do with a few more options as only a vegetarian bake and a pasta dish. Apart from that will definitely go back on my next visit :)

We have been to the New Inn on a few occasions and every time the food has been great ! Very fresh food, melt in the mouth meat and lovely desserts. I cannot fault the food at all. Staff have always been friendly . Outdoor beer garden is a good wee area too. However lately the cleanliness has been very poor. Even covid aside tables should be cleaned better, but with covid they should be cleaned every time. I got given a high chair for my baby that looked like it had 6 months worth of food and stains on it and then a glass with lipstick marks on it. This is not an acceptable standard at any time, but especially with covid. If going request the room on the middle floor, the top floor room is very run down old shabby chairs and cobwebs all over the walls. No excuse when should have had a deep clean prior to re opening . No social distancing at all between tables.

My cousins and I dropped in for lunch recently with our 3 large dogs. The staff could not have been more helpful in accommodating us. They opened a function room so we would have lots of room. The food was lovely and fresh and lots of it.

Great food and friendly staffWhilst on holiday in Coldingham we visited the New Inn for drinks and went back later for food. I had gammon, pineapple and chips which was cooked perfectly and my mum had king prawns which were gorgeous. Staff were very friendly and attentive. There was track and trace in place, hand sanitiser and staff were wearing mask. I would definitely recommend the New Inn.

We ate dinner here when staying nearby. We were walk-ins but bagged a corner table and never felt others were too close. Track and trace, sanitiser and face masks were in evidence. No menus on the table - it's all on the blackboard. We had a lamb shank and king prawns, both were very good, and came quite quickly. Staff were congregating at the bar, they could perhaps have been more subtle and spent more time wiping tables etc. We didn't use the loos. But the food was tasty and we felt safe. Worth a punt.

Visited here last weekend. Impressed with the track and trace measures on entry. We were shown upstairs to the dining room. We quickly had our orders taken, service was good and the food was superb (gammon steak, scampi and chips and steak and ale pie all enjoyed). However I can only give 3 out of 5 due to the lack of social distancing, one side of our table were sat back to back with a foots distance between us!! We were going to eat there a second time but decided against it for that reason which was a shame

We had a very good experience here. I've read a couple of recent reviews, and I have to say I disagree with the comments on Covid rules. There is hand sanitiser, and track & trace form clearly available upon entry. The women's toilets were spotless.Staff wore masks, and were welcoming and polite.I can recommend the Tynside Ale.We ate the steak and ale pie, Highland chicken (stuffed with haggis, wrapped in bacon and covered in whisky sauce), gammon, and battered haddock. Our plates were empty - we were hungry but the food was also pretty good, the steak was tender, the gammon, and chicken succulent. I would have liked more veg, but I guess I should have asked. The mashed carrot and turnip was seasoned well. Only I had a dessert, and chose coffee ice cream sundae. I didn't like the addition of marshmellows and would have liked more coffee beans, perhaps a touch of whisky in the cream? All in all, we enjoyed our visit and would come again.

Good food but COVID-19 restrictions don’t seem to apply or be in place. Voluntary track and trace not even 1mt between tables. Staff removed mask to talk to customers. Rude and slow service Be careful

Mackays was absolutely the best fish and chips I had tasted in years. The portions were very generous, and the menu was surprisingly wide-ranging too.

Toilets are very dirty, not cleaned mess in first two cubicles. Staff swearing in front of customers staff having breaks off shift talking about other members of staff in earshot of customers not a great look.

Just had a munchy box for 2. Absolutely brilliant. Loads of food in 2 boxes, really nice chips & kebab meat. Service was quick and friendly. If I lived closer I'd be in every week.

Make sure you go to toilet before food because you won't want to walk that far. Food was good better than other spoons in the surrounding areas.
