The New Garden in Bridgend

Ordered chicken sweetcorn soup, peking ribs, salt and chilli chicken with fried rice, my friend ordered prawn toast, honey ribs, sizzling fillet steak in Cantonese sauce. Honey ribs looked lovely but the peking ribs aren’t even ribs, just grizzle with a minuscule amount of meat, shouldn’t be advertised as ribs because they definitely are not ribs, soup was as expected, salt and chilli chicken was nice but no spice whatsoever, no chillies or chilli flakes, when I told them there is no chilli I was told some people don’t like that, fillet steak was bland and no sizzling whatsoever, may as well have brought it on a normal plate, this place was recommended by a local and it was absolutely terrible, the 3 things that let it down is basically false advertisement, ribs that aren’t ribs, salt and chilli with no chilli, and sizzling steak that doesn’t sizzle

After so many people recommending new garden, we thought we'd try it out. Very friendly staff, a bit grubby inside but ok. Food was quite expensive so was expecting good things. Restaurant was heaving too, also a good sign. Food arrived. Everything we ordered was very bland but the meat especially tasted boiled, tasteless, very chewy and we couldn't eat it. One of the meals was fillet steak Cantonese style £13.50, I couldn't even chew it. Thick chewy, rubbery and tasteless. my husband ate some as he was starving, but we left everything pretty much. When they came to clear away they were shocked we had finished, asked if we wanted it packed up, to which we replied no thanks, not one waiter asked if everything was OK or if we enjoyed. Very disappointing. I've never written a review before, but paying all that money to walk out and get alternative food says it all. I'm just amazed so many people recommended it. Very disappointing

Amazing food, it was our first visit and we'll definitely be back. As a large restaurant the noise was quite overwhelming at times and the pianist couldn't be heard.

We went out for Chinese meal with friends. We had beautiful meal and had a good time with the waiter who was brilliant to talk too.

Friendly staff, delicious Chinese food, all culminating in a memorable dining experience. For those seeking hearty dishes for incredible prices, this restaurant should be high on your agenda. It was incredibly busy during our Friday night visit but the speed and quality of food in this large establishment is mightily impressive. Highly recommended by Stephen from South East London.

One of the worst restaurants I have ever been to....the only thing that they are interested in is the colour of your money - awful food, terrible service, rude attitude, dirty and a feeling of low hygiene standards!

ALWAYS a great atmosphere and great food We are regulars in New Garden. We always have a fab warm welcome. The staff are so accommodating with amended the set meals with a few different meals we like The food is fresh, flavoursome & piping hot. Consistently delicious!

Enjoyed the food, a very busy place and will need to wait for about 20 minutes for the food, must book in advance.

A tantalising atmosphere with fish tanks, koi pond, grand piano, all backed up by - without exaggeration - the best Chinese food I've ever eaten in my life. The staff were fast and the owner friendly, if you live anywhere near this place get down there ASAP.

We had a lovely time here, food was great, the waiter looking after us was absolutely amazing. Very funny guy, made the experience a lot better. The food all arrived OK besides my dish, my starter came long after everyone else had finished theirs which was a bit unfortunate. Besides that, really good experience, would recommend

Food awful and service very poor . Not what we expected when we read other people comments. Never again will we go back even if was free One of our friends had the special curry he threw up in his mouth ( his words ) . We try to talk to explain about the meal they were not interested only keep saying no one else complained What a waste of money and time how people except bad food and bad service I don’t understand. I think a visit form the environment department would not go a miss . One of the waiter’s was cleaning a lazy Susan top on top of a dirty garbage bin . Omg could not believe. The restaurant only concern was making money as fast it can . Don’t give a damm about their customers

Here we are again! Beautiful traditional food. Can not fault it. I highly recommend this place. The young man is who served us was wonderful. Great banter good fun just what u want from your waiter. Very reasonable too. 5 stars 🌟

Food was good. Service was not very good possibly due to unstaffed reason but very rushed waitressing and food took a while to come out, ordered some drinks as food came out and never received them. At one point we we got given the wrong food and started eating it but it got taken away and given to the right table after we all had our hands touching it!

Food was good and service was speedy considering the size of our party. However the portion size of the scallops was absolutely tiny, it was about 1 and a half scallops worth of meat for £12, my starter was bigger The mussels in black bean sauce were tasty.

Great food and great customer service

Stopped in for the first time having been recommended. Food was really good. But lady very rude when we ordered a couple of soft drinks whilst waiting. Wanted cash and I only had a card. Really spoke down to me saying "next time cash." Wish I cancelled the drinks. Undecided if I'd go again. My teenage son commented "mum she was so rude!" Absolutely son! Even a teenager pointed it out.

Wonderful restaurant, never heard of a bad experience here and my own experience emulated this. I would go again. Food and service was excellent. The chicken with smoked garlic being particularly special.

Love this lovely Chinese, come here everytime I'm in the area. Brought colleagues from work and we had a set meal which was wonderful as always, even took 2 portions home

Food was tasteless. Poor quality meat in the non vegetarian dishes and the staff rushed us despite the restaurant being pretty empty. Soft drinks were very expensive, I won't be rushing back.....

Fantastic Chinese Restaurant, every dish ordered was excellent and I highly recommend coming just for the beautiful food, I haven't had any better and I've tried a lot in my time! Sadly I can't rate this restaurant 5 stars because the customer service is lacking in quite a big way as numerous others have stated in other reviews, it's a shame because a friendly service goes a long way but you are just treated like a number with no smile or friendly chit chat. You have your orders taken and the food and drinks just come with no interaction at all dropped on your table. You get the vibe that the staff don't want to be there. Other than that this Chinese restaurant is an absolute gem!

Went for a retail xmas dinner in April as we didn't have time before. About 16 of us in total. All were happy with food . Service is always great and prices reasonable. I shared chicken balls rice egg noodles and lettuce wraps with friends. I had lemon sorbet for desert. Always has the most fluffiest egg fried rice.not all greasy . Sweet and sour sauce has nice consistency and tastes good. Always happy to come here

An absolute honour to write the thousandth review. World class experience begins at the main reception with the greeting fish, only to be outdone by their larger finned friends in the gorgeous indoor pond. Decor and service is second to none, as is the food. I've always dreamed of playing that grand piano above the bridge. May I say the duck is so aromatic it's delicious. Who knew beef could be so crispy! And the seaweed so sweet. I am so happy that I've flown thousands of miles just to eat at this restaurant. Lemon soup was a highlight that followed the ever so sticky spare ribs. The end or as they say in your language "au revoir"

Like most people been coming here for 20+ years special occasions. Hasn't changed much. Food is decent hot and fresh I would say majority of it is bland to cater for the masses but its all good Service is fast and efficient as always Atmosphere was flat as no background music although venue is clean and tidy

I’ve been to New Garden more times than I can count and they never fail to,the welcome and service is second to none and the food was amazing,always our first choice for a fabulous meal and good value for money

First time back to the new garden in over 20 years and was so disappointed, but not with the food, as this was awesome. One waiter, took everything personally and was awfully rude, snapping if we asked for anything. Not sure if he was having a bad day but I won’t be returning. I felt so uncomfortable that I was to afraid to ask for anything. Made my experience there very sad!

Always get the duck pancakes. The soup is delicious. Best around.

Been many times ,but food and service was very poor this time.had set meal ribs were very tough and the possion sizes were the same for four people as they were for two people.very disappointed as I was a party of 4 and paid double the price off our friends who were a party of two but had exactly the same amount of food.service was arrogant.wont be rushing back .

Up until last night I’ve never had a bad meal/takeaway from here. We ordered the special meal E for two. The starters were ok but the duck that followed was so dry. Two out of the three mains were bland. The duck meat was ok but the sauce was terrible. The fillet (?) beef was chewy and again the sauce was not the best. The deep fried chicken was really nice! The rice was claggy, not the best. I feel they are trying to save money. Personally I would remove the duck from the list and improve on the rest. Shame because I was really looking forward to it. Have to be honest it’s hard to find a good Chinese around here but I thought I could rely on Aberkenfig, turns out. I can’t 🥹

Wow! We returned to the New Garden after a 10 year absence to celebrate a family 60th birthday and weren't at all disappointed despite reading some negative reviews. We booked early (6:00pm) and things were already quite busy yet we received an excellent welcome. We weren't sure what to order so we went for one of the fixed menu options. Starters promptly arrived but mains took a little longer once the starter dishes had been cleared. But on the plus side though, the rest was quite welcome. The atmosphere was lovely and staff although extremely busy remained attentive throughout. Our only criticism, if you can call it that, would be that portions were extremely large for us but takeaway boxes were readily supplied and Sunday lunch was taken care of.

Went here on 1st March for my wife’s 70th birthday for 14 people had a fantastic experience food excellent service excellent so good we have just booked for my birthday on 5th April

Disappointing... haven't been for 2years and won't be in a rush to return. Poor service and some dishes were tasteless/ very bland. Such a shame the past high standard has dropped.

Nine of us went for Birthday celebration. Lovely food, generous portions and given containers to take home what was left. Lovely friendly staff.

A little disappointed with The New Garden. This was my second visit and was not as pleasant as the first. The restaurant was very busy and very noisy! The service was ok but we had to ask for cutlery and napkins. Our drinks were not as requested and there is very little attention to detail. Food was quite good but not as good as I remember. Overpriced for what we had too. Nice but I won’t be rushing back.

If you’re used to eating Chinese food from anywhere other than your local takeaway then don’t bother coming here. I regularly eat Chinese food from different places, cities and countries but here Is the worst I’ve ever tasted. The service is slow and never with a please or thank you, not even a smile. The decor is very tired and dated and the layout is cramped. When the restaurant if busy it’s very noisy

Went for a family night out to celebrate my daughter and son in-laws birthday's and had a fabulous time. The food was excellent and the service was first class. Various set menus at reasonable prices. Highly recommend a visit. You won't be disappointed. We have booked again to go on Valentine's Night.

Unexpected visit after a long day shopping in Cardiff. We were the first costumers in at 17:00, and the restaurant was literally buzzing with in the next quarter of a hour, service was prompt and food came with in the expected time, steaming hot and very tasty, my 5 years old old was very pleased and even tried some new flavours. Only drawback was the fact that i could have done with another pint during the meal, butt unfortunately was not offered nor was checked back for another round, but to give the staff some credit they were really busy by that time. Overall great to come back after so many years.

Not been here since before covid, and it was definitely worth the wait! Food was absolutely beautiful, so tasty and plenty of. Very reasonably priced to, had 11 dishes and 11 drinks(5 pints beer, 5 pints soft drinks) and was under £150. Cant wait to go again

This place is absolutely the best Chinese I have come across in South Wales. I travel about 35mins to get to this place and both my partner and I have never been let down. We typically eat the set menu A with lettuce wraps, ribs, garlic chicken, sirloin steak in sauce, change the beansprouts for king prawn chow mein and change the chicken in black bean to crispy beef. Accompanied by a jasmine tea and soft drink, this food is an absolute delight! Call to book as they are very popular! Highly recommended!!

In my first year as Senior Instructor at the United World College of the Atlantic’s Extramural Centre ; Its Director, my boss, Mister David Cope, along with his beautiful and lovely wife Mrs Helen Cope, herself also an educationalist ; in her case as a primary school teacher at St Illtyd Primary School in Llantwit Major, as well as with their two excellent sons Matt and Jonny ; In order to host me for dinner there, brought me to the New Garden thank you :) Specifically because of its reputation as the best Chinese restaurant in the whole of South Wales. And they were right ! Thank you. A real privilege !

Great choice available on the menu, the food portion size was amazing - plenty to take home after the meal. Service was a bit slow but it was rather busy. Overall a great experience and I’m sure I will visit again for a nice succulent Chinese meal.

Had the set menu (E) for 2 people but could have fed 3 easily , starter sharer , crispy duck pancakes, then 3 dishes with rice , very flexible to swap if you don’t want/like something. Definitely worth a revisit.

just got back from yet another lovely meal we went for the set meal which was more than enough for us and was very tasty and delicious, the waiters were very helpful and nothing was a trouble for them the piano player was easy listening and added to the atmosphere which was very relaxed what a lovely evening to end a very busy week just what we needed see you again

Having read some reviews I was somewhat disappointed. Paper table cloth and napkins is never nice. Food was just OK a little bland I thought. Unable to pay at table you neeed to queue at front desk. On the positive side not over priced and no service charge. All in all the experience felt like a visit to your local fast food restaurant. The staff were polite by not saying to much and dashing around made the whole experience feel a little rushed and not relaxed. Not bad but nothing special.

Annoying front of house. Tired decor. Takes too long to get drinks. Terrible fried squid. Something in my Coke. No time to check the bill.
