The New Five Star in East Ayrshire

As our favourite Chinese takeaway is closed due to current restrictions, we thought we would try the new five star for our takeaway as it was once a very good restaurant. Definitely a poor choice in my opinion. Our first try was November, our order was Shredded chicken in Kung po sauce with fried rice and a crispy beef in Peking sauce with fried rice. Kung po chicken was only just edible, the beef was slices of beef, not crispy battered as ordered again poor standard. We didn't leave a review as times at the moment are very trying, and everyone deserves another chance. Last night we gave them a second chance and so sorry we did as this time, it was if even possible, worse than the last. We ordered crispy chicken in mandarin sauce fried rice and salt and chili chips, chicken in garlic and ginger fried rice and chips. We received a box of what seemed to be our crispy dried out looking chicken (tasteless) and a carton of what they said was mandarin sauce, but tasted of a carton of tomato ketchup so basically it was not crispy chicken cooked in amandarin sauce it was a do it yourself kit.. also no fries with the order and when we called to queerie them we were told a forty minute wait (for their mistake) sorry but just not good enough... I gave this review a one star review due to the salt and chili chips being very nice or I wouldn't have gave it any at all.... I would never recommend this takeaway service to anyone, I gave it another chance but sorry I did!!

food tonight was terrible (carry out). Tasted like it had been prepared earlier and kept in fridge for a day then reheated. Chicken was like cardboard (satay). Chow Mein was horrible stale meat and veg.

Food was okay, but prices have risen a lot for lunch. Not sure that this offers best value in Kilmarnock, as there are other alternatives fairly close.

My daughter wanted to treat me to my lunch and I've to had Chinese in a long while plus no been to five star in a long time. Its hasn't changed so friendly so warm welcome and great food and you dont feel rushed.

The staff are friendly& the service is quick & efficient I have always enjoyed my meal in The New Five Star & have no qualms about returning with any of my friends as the menu caters for all tastes & appetites

Haven't been here for a while. Was just my son and I having dinner out. Arrived about 5:30 And got seated straight away. Staff are very attentive and friendly. After orfd4ring drinks we ordered our starter and main meals. My son ordered chicken noodle soup and chicken Maryland, I ordered cream of chicken soup and breast of chicken curry with fried rice and chips. Soups were fantastic. Main meal for me was top-notch. My son wasn't so impressed as he didn't know his came with gammon, sausage and fritters but he loved the chicken. Next time he'll choose chicken cutlet. Would definitely recommend to everyone as food is amazing. Be back soon.

Very good place to eat in an American style diner , this is a busy place with people coming for lunch time meals whether sitting in or takeaway. The food is made to order and made very quickly. The quality is excellent and the prices are very reasonable worth a visit.

Lovely restaurant. Friendly staff, fast service and great food! Salt and chilli chips where delicious! And I would definitely recommend their chicken soup. My husband enjoyed his meal too. We will be back again.

Fantastic place for lunch or dinner. We recently had lunch and it was very, very good. 3 courses for £8.80- what a bargain. Highly recommended

My starter fine. Friends given wrong starter. Main course which we paid extra over the menu was special chop suey and it was awful the only good thing about it was the portion was small and even then we left some of it. On complaining to the manager he just said thank you thank you. The banana fritter was OK. Twenty pound per head wasted and think I could of made better and fed the three of us with packet ingredients that would of tasted better for a tenner total. How it's called 5 star is laughable

Went last week for the first time in a while and it’s still as good. Wednesday afternoon and it was really busy. Fast service and good food at a reasonable price. First choice for lunch if visiting Kilmarnock.

DO NOT EAT HERE!I had found mould on my pancakes and my mixed rice old and dry!. Also had my bottle of coke delivered late as had been forgotten!

Love gong here for the lunch time and evening menu at a special price. Staff are always nice and attentive. No lift but steeps stairs

Lunch Menu is all I have had, but the food is superb at a very reasonable price. Go regularly for lunch, would not go anywhere else. 10/10.

Given chance after chance . Again tonight awful things missing then said we could get them but would be charged .. won’t be using them again . Chips burned to a crisp to don’t use them folks take ur money every week ! Won’t be mine from now on !

A very tasty meal with excellent service even though it was a very busy night. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We especially liked the ribs and the satay sauce although all the food was excellent and good value for money.

A good solid value meal, it wasn’t bad but not outstanding either I had the lunch menu the soup was excellent as was the banana fritters in syrup the sweet and sour chicken was almost crunch (stale?) but tasty. It’s up a long flight of stairs and met by pleasant staff, as I said it was and felt like a value meal, a tasty one and I would go back

Myself and my husband come to this lovely Chinese restaurant whenever we are in Kilmarnock and feel like a nice Chinese meal. Service is always friendly and the meals are always lovely and full of flavour. We also think they are good value for money. Would definitely recommend if you looking for a good Chinese restaurant in Kilmarnock.

This restaurant has been an institution in Kilmarnock and has enjoyed many years of good custom owing mainly to the consistency of the quality of the food- and the businessman's lunch/early dinner options which are very reasonably priced. However i got a sweet and sour Hong Kong style chicken takeaway this week and it was awful: no other words to describe it except unappetising and tepid- it had greasy bits of chicken floating around in greasy orange sauce. This is not the usual standard and will make me think twice about returning in the future!

We went for a set lunch menu on a Monday. The price was very reasonable and there was so much choice on the menu, it really didn’t feel like we were eating from a set lunch menu. Would definitely recommend!!

Had a takeaway Chinese from here whilst in Kilmarnock visiting friends. They said they had never used this one before so it was a bit of a gamble. It was totally worth it though as the food was delicious! Very very nice takeaway meal and would definitely recommend.

The 5star has been in Kilmarnock for years. The foood is amazing and a great price. My fav is the cream of chicken soup beef in mandarin sauce & banana fritters. The menu is extensive. The servers are very good at telling you what is in the food & how hot or sweet it is. The 3 course is £8 10p fantastic value for money

Went to Five Star at the last minute before going to a show in Glasgow, explained we were in a bit of a hurry and waitress couldn’t have been any more helpful, our meal was delivered to our table piping hot and in about 5mins from ordering! Both my wife and I really enjoyed our dishes, her special satay was delicious with huge prawns and beef was really nice not the usual chewy stuff from our local takeaway, only bad point is that you have to walk in past people waiting for takeaways, didn’t really bother me but it may put some people off, would be better if there was a separate entrance for restaurant.

Good visit with friendly staff and good food. Only issue was delay in being served our main courses. Would definitely return!

Have been using the five star restaurant for both eating in and takeaways,sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style is my favourite,but we always enjoy whatever we have. The staff are always very welcoming. Would recommend.

This is our second visit to this restaurant. The food and service is very good. My only issue is there was not butterfly king prawn starter on the lunch menu. However the soups are good especially the chicken and sweetcorn.

You really have to pay a lunchtime visit. Quality of food , service and cost outstanding. Would recommend the chicken and sweetcorn soup, usually very boring but it is so light and flavoursome. Satay chicken is fab. Have a go!

I was at this restaurant about 10 days ago. We were shown to our seats but a waiter was over to get our drinks order before we had even sat down. I asked him for a couple of minutes so we could get our jackets off!!

We have used this restaurant routinely for a good few months and the food has been good, however tonight I phoned and ordered food for delivery. They stated it would take up to 45 minutes. I called to place my order at 17:23 and at 18:36 I had to call them back to make sure that it was out for delivery which was 1 hour 20 mins afterwards. They apologised on the phone and guaranteed it was out for delivery. We had to then call again at 19:10 and cancelled our order due to the time of waiting, they did nothing to keep our custom, or entice us to come back to this restaurant. The poor delivery guy then showed up 10 minutes after this with the meals, after we cancelled. 2hrs after our original order! And the restaurant didn’t bother to tell their delivery driver that we had cancelled! We will not be back!

Starters of Prawn Toast and Ribs were excellent - as was the service

14 of us were booked in for dinner on saturday 14th october 2017, we all had a lovely meal, the service was first class and my sister was given a birthday drink from the management which was really nice of them. We had starters, mains and birthday cake for dessert. Staff was so nice and helpful. Everything was freshly cooked.

Very friendly and welcoming. Decor dated but will soon be Retro. This is not an expensive restaurant. The food was good enough but 2/3 were rated a bit bland. Great noodles. Nice wine. Very relaxed evening...last customers to leave and didn't feel rushed.

I was a bit disappointed in my latest visit to The Five Star. I had a soup starter, the soup was not as tasty as I would have liked, it was passable, but only just. The main was very greasy, I like fried rice, but not rice that is soaked in the stuff. I much prefer the restaurant next door, it is far better, from the staffing right through to the food.I have been to the Five Star a good few times, normally it is first class, but this time the food let it down.

Nice place to eat - staff are friendly and attentive and the food was delicious and plentiful. Normally I prefer a buffet but for a sit down meal I really like the New Five Star. The menu is a good one with a good verity and the portions are good enough for me - I do like large portions...

Worst meal a have had first had to wait 40 mins till it came to table then it was wrong, then whn they sorted it ma vegtable curry was full of water its went right down hill. Beef chow mein was dry and tasteless, mushroom omelette wasnt much better, was having an egg hunt. Beef still looked alive!! Will never ever b bk here. Deffo not recommend this place at all!!!!

Popped in for the 3 course set menu meal deal, it was nice for the price, my dish was slightly greasy but the flavours were good.

Been coming here for many years but this is our first visit in ages so glad to say it hasn't changed, same friendly, courteous service, clean & welcoming & the food as always was delicious, hot & plentiful, we'll definitely be back soon.

Been here several occasions and all has been well however tonight was terrible from start to finish came to ordering meal told the gentleman i would like a chicken fried rice he said ok and walked away quicker than a flash i never got to say curry sauce chips etc so meal came out you would be lucky if there was 10 chips on a plate asked the woman if it was possible for more chips she snatched the plate of the table and came back with an even smaller plate with maybe a few more chips on, then i wasn't even finished my last mouthful and i was asked are you finished sir gathering up plates and glasses of the table i never got to answer she was away with my plates etc i also asked for a can of diet cola which i waited 10 minutes for all in all a bad experience in an restaurant that i have been to on several occasions i never felt so rushed and under pressure to eat and get out, never again !!!

I've been eating here since I was a young lad and hadn't been for a while, popped in after the new year and was still impressed with the quality of the food and the friendly staff, ideal location within town centre and plenty of parking

Been going here for few years now.but went on friday to find prices raised .and service so rushed.portion so small..couple next to us still eating main meal ask what they wanted for desert..not good.!!.

We had an excellent meal on New Year's Day . Staff were very freindly. Have been a couple of times. We live locally and recommend you visit if you like Chinese and there is an European menu too. Service was of a very high standard.

Have been attending this restaurant since 1975 and four generations of family, the current owners were waiters in the early days and still uphold the high quality expected.We have always found the staff to be extremely friendly and the food to be of a consistently high standard. ONE OF THE BEST.

Well been here loads of times but this time i found a dead spider half way down my glass they messed up an order. The manager came up to the table and asked what happened and then i explained about the spider and he had no intressed what so ever in what i had to say so dissaponted tonight.

Visited with a large party ofwork colleagues on a busy Friday lunch time.Great 3 course lunch menu for £7.00. Huge choices to suit everyone. All our party thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was brilliant very quick and all dishes arrived at the same time. Staff friendly and courteous. Great value. We will be back.

We always visit when we have relatives from Bognor Regis staying with us, as they rate it far superior to any Chinese restaurants in their own area. However this visit was not great. Chicken Satay was very dry, others meals were very greasy and onions in the meals were hard, making it not very pleasant to eat, Inbetween picking the hardest ones out the food. Staff are friendly and talkative, but could not really give advice on a choice of wine, resulting in us just choosing the house wine. Probably won't go back, when other places to try in the area. The deco really needs updating and no ambience at all.

arrived before 12pm unaware that service didn't start til then. However we were welcomed in ad allowed to sit until then we also had our two little babies so was really appreciated that they allowed us in. The food order was taken by very friendly staff and if unsure they went to find out especially as she was a new start. The food arrived quickly and was warm, really tasty. Would definitely return. for two starters, two mains two juice and sides and extra sauce was £24.30 all in found this very very reasonable.

We popped in last weekend whilst visiting friends. Rather disappointed as the last time we ate there it was simply the best. On entering the restaurant was very empty especially for a Saturday evening. Mixed starters and crispy won tons were ordered for starters. The won tons were extremely greasy and the sweet and sour sauce rather thin and not at all tasty.Mains were OK although the chow mien was again greasy to say the least.The staff were very polite and helpful, but overall not the best Chinese we have had from here.

Got to be the best Chinese food in Kilmarnock whether you are sitting in or having a takeaway. We have tried many items from the menu and nothing has disappointed us.

My husband & I came here for lunch. There lunch menu was a good price. The food was delicious. I didn't eat much of my main meal so the waitress kindly asked if I wanted it put in a container with so. Staff nice & friendly. Soft drinks expensive though

Visited while on holiday in the area, found the food to be plentiful and very tasty, the service was also very friendly and helpful, would highly recommend.

Having been to this restaurant many times but not for a few years, I was very disappointed in the service and food. Ordered and received our starters which one of them was hot and spicy chicken wings, no mention of garlic chicken on the menu which is exactly what we got, chicken wings covered in huge lumps of garlic gloves. After our starter we waited 35 mins before asking where our main meal was. They apologised and said they had forgotten. Even though only about 12 people in entire restaurant and they walked by our table about 10 times. Both meals came and once again completely covered in huge lumps of garlic. I managed to eat half of mine but had to tell them my husbands was unedible due to the garlic. Waitress advised it was a garlic sauce, asked why it didn't say in the menu as only described as Cantonese king prawn noodles, no mention of garlic sauce. No answer. We finished our meal and received the bill. Surprised not to see a discount of any sort on our bill, and when mentioned was told, "well we did say sorry" They grudgingly removed £3.50 from our bill for our drinks. Can safely say won't be back.

Wide menu choice but you only get what you are given. Example, the menu lists sliced duck with ether pineapple or orange or lemon. It does not matter what choice you make you will receive a sauce with all three elements, pineapple, orange and lemon!When I raised this issue with the manager following my son ordering the duck with orange (he cannot eat pineapple) the manager did not apologies, he said "a lot of people have pineapple, so we make up a batch of all three items and you get what we have" Does that sound like a restaurant that is keen to loo after its customers??We ordered drinks, that never arrived. When questioned about the 'lost drinks order' the explanation is "we are too busy'. Could this lack of attention to its customers wishes, simply be a way of cutting down on customers???? Well, as long standing customers who have always raved about the food, they have managed to lose us.

I have used this restaurant for over 30 years and have NEVER had a poor meal. Food is always delicious, staff are very friendly and service is great. Lovely, welcoming atmosphere. What more can you ask for?

Went to the five star last week have been on many occasion this time though will be my last. I will explain why first ordered soup it came and when I was eating it I noticed something in the bowl (a large bit of scouring pad I told the waitress who advised me it was for cleaning the bowl which might I add had a large chip. Then came my curry the meat was disgusting burnt as was the curry sauce the manager said he was so embarrassed but was having some trouble as it was a new cook. Anyone thinking of going here should think again he also had the cheek to give us the bill although no food was eaten so so dissapointed as we have been going there for years. But what can I say no more please think before going her to eat.

I've been to most if not all of the Chinese restaurants in Kilmarnock and The New Five Star is definitely the best of the lot. The staff are very friendly and more than happy to help you out with anything you need. The food quality is great, I can't say I've ever had a meal that I was disappointed with and the price to quality ratio is fantastic. I've eaten here more times than I can count and the delivery option comes in very handy if you don't fancy going out.Would recommend to anyone that likes Chinese food!

Not a big fan of Chinese food, Tried the restaurant couple of weeks ago and a 3 Course Lunch for £7.60 is very cheap, Place was very busy.Due to certain meat requirements only had vegetarian dishes and Spring Rolls, Would say out of 10 I would rate it 7/10 and for value 10/10Once again maybe a biased view but food did not tickle my buds but could be my taste of such food

Decided to take the wife to the Five Star as i got the night off early from my work they do a Special 3 Course for £12 and boy it fills you up best spring roll i had in a long time and the Curry was amazing too full for sweet so we just had coffee great value for Money 10/10 we will be back <><><>

Went here yesterday for lunch, three courses for £7.60. The quality of the food is outstanding for the price, the portions are good too along with the friendly and efficient service. Special mention for the chicken and sweetcorn soup and the chicken curry both light and fresh.Well worth a visit.

Family dinner with kids, staff were amazingly friendly and food choice was excellent and had something for all to like. Service was great, food was great, we will be back. Best Chinese meal in ages

A very good Chinese Restaurant which always provides good, friendly service and excellent food at a reasonable cost.

We were looking for a Chinese takeaway. Initially we went into the Dragon Royale but there was a wait of almost 2 hours so we went next door to the New Five Star. The food arrived promptly despite the restaurant being extremely busy. The food was good although the portion size was a little smaller than we have had elsewhere (but then it was a little cheaper also because unlike some other takeaways, the prices include boiled rice)

I just received carry out. Omg what has happened to this restaurant. My curry was like water. Fried rice stodgy. Waste of money 5 * whole carry out went in bin .Never again. So went down hill.

so why were the waiting staff so incompetent, no crowds, no pressure and you still couldn't serve a decent meal.Diet coke warm, chicken soup cold AND getting mixed up with beef and chicken, I ordered Chicken Satay but your waiter brought me beef and then disappeared along with the rest of waiting staff for a good 20 minutes. By that point I had eaten the vegetables and the rest was stone cold when a waitress appeared from the kitchen and asked why I hadn't eaten my meal. She offered to bring me what I had originally ordered but by then my partner had finished and we were sick fed up of waiting so I said don't bother and then the IDIOT who had taken my order in the first place apologised for his mistake and then tried to charge us the full price on our bill.Go next door to the other restaurant, we didn't because they were mobbed but that tells you all you need to know about the standards of the two restaurants.

A friend was visiting from Glasgow and we ended up here for lunch. The food was good with a reasonable choice, the price was very good, but, the service was excellent!! The only criticism I have is the décor. The place is a bit tired looking and could do with a facelift. The toilet also is in need of an upgrade. Having said that it will not stop me going back.

Have eaten out at this restaurant umpteen times over the years since I was a child. Haven't been in a long time, and ordered a delivery for the first time last night. Unfortunately the worst chinese take away we've ever eaten. What a let down. Delivery was speedy but sadly the food wasn't up to standard, and that's what matters at the end of the day.Ordered beef and onion, and good old sweet and sour chicken balls. Who can go wrong with that, right? Wrong. Where was my thick syrupy sweet and sour sauce that smells oh so sweet and sour??? Down at my usual chinese take away that's where. The sauce from Five Star was watery, oddly garish red, and STANK of vinegar. It stank the house out. Bonus that it gave the plughole a good acid attack though. The chicken balls were tiny, pale and bland. The rice had far too many big chunks of egg through it. The chips tasted of really stale oil. The beef and onion came in a pool of oily water. It looked like bare meat with no gravy. So, so bad. Maybe it's just not what we're used to. It's not what my wheelie bin's used to either...Very sad that the great restaurant I remember was such a failure at take away food.

Visited the New Five Star restaurant in Kilmarnock and had an excellent meal, looked after by terrific staff who couldn't do enough for us. The Five Star definitely deserves five stars.

This chinese restaurant will not let you down its been brilliant for years , fresh clean and with friendly and accommodating staff , there is always good deals for lunches and evening meals and they also deliver, It is Kilmarnock's best by far

Great Chinese Restaurant. Been in Kilmarnock for many years, is very popular, especially at the weekends. My favorite is Chicken Curry. Its a must if you visit this place to try.

My family has been coming to the Five Star for decades, and for good reason. The food and quality is consistently excellent. The chicken noodle soup in particular is unique and the best in the town by far.
