The Nag's is my local, and there's a good reason for that, given that there are several pubs within a 10 minute walk of home: the atmosphere and character of the pub. It's noted by many for its quirky interior decoration, its large garden, its pet-friendly nature and most of all, its gloriously eccentric landlady Flossie! Flossie is a true Walthamstow treasure, who's had the Nag's for over 20 years now, and has stamped her personality onto the pub - she's clearly doing something right. On this occasion, my partner and I had dinner - a couple of their excellent pizzas. The menu is small but of high quality at the price point. The beer selection is smaller than that of some other Walthamstow pubs (most notably, the nearby Village and the Rose & Crown in Hoe Street), but I know that whenever I'm there I can nearly always get a pint of Landlord, and there are usually a couple of other real ales available. The wine menu is surprisingly lengthy, and several cocktails are available. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Flossie DJs from her own vinyl collection, and there's always live jazz (with free admission) on a Sunday. One other upside is that children aren't admitted to the pub or the rear garden! I know a few people have complained about this, but it's gratifying to have somewhere local to drink which doesn't have unattended kids running around and doesn't resemble a middle class creche at busy times. If parents of young children want to take them to the pub, there are many others available in Walthamstow. The major reason I'm not giving the Nag's a five star review is due to the behaviour of a minority of customers who seem to be there because its more than local fame, and who don't appear to understand basic pub etiquette (or indeed any respect for their fellow patrons). In that regard, it's a victim of it's own success!

This lovely pub is let down by one thing and one thing only. The lady who parades round at the end of the night who is objectively rude to customers and genuinely very unpleasant. We have visited this pub several times and have always been welcomed by the other bar staff, who serve drinks professionally and with a smile on their faces. We have come back several times due to the fun atmosphere. The good vibes are sadly sullied when last orders comes, as the otherwise fun environment is ripped apart by the lady who goes round kicking people out (not sure whether she is the landlady/manager - I would ask if she wasn't so unpleasant to speak to). Let me preface this by saying I entirely understand that the pub needs to stick to its closing times and I totally appreciate that the staff must all want to go home after working long shifts. My friend and I have both worked in service previously so would never wish to outstay our welcome. On two occasions now, we have been finishing our drinks when said lady has been going round offering plastic cups (which we accepted) and letting people know the pub needed to close to encouraging people to drink up and make their way home. There is nothing wrong with this in principle of course. However, her means of communication entirely juxtapose the entire point and purpose of hospitality. She is objectively rude to customers, saying 'you've had your time' when they are clearly already leaving and not intending to be difficult. Most recently, the lady was giving my friend a plastic cup for the small amount of her drink left, and we were clearly making our way out. To try and placate her and appease her sour demeanour I said to her 'don't worry we will be out of your way in just a minute' (for context this was when lots of other people still needed to leave - by no means were we being a pain). She responded with 'I'd like you to leave now' - entirely serious, she wasn't joking, and she said this with a genuinely stern and unpleasant expression. I have no problem with the pubs encouraging people to make their way home, but this needs to be done in a way that doesn't actively make the customers feel unwanted and treated rudely. It is such a shame that an otherwise lovely pub that we'd like to support is seriously let down by an objectively unpleasant and horrible attitude of one member of staff. I am inclined to suggest this lady either amends her approach, or moves into an industry which may suit her better. May I suggest a dinner lady in a primary school, as she clearly likes to use an authoritarian approach. Not sure if the pub's name is inspired by her.

Landlady is aggressive and from reading reviews seems like a pattern. Used to go often, furniture outside needs updating. The locals give it a great vibe but the landlady is miserable and makes you feel unwelcome. Feel sad that i wont be returning. Bar staff are nice. Had food here, pizza was good, crusts a little over cooked. My sister had been shouted at by the chef a year or so ago over a misunderstanding, accused her of saying the pizza was wrong when she didn't, it was the right order... the bar staff flagged it as wrong to the chef - also seems like a pattern. Has potential to be a great pub.

Went in for a quiet drink and a pizza. Food hadn’t arrived after half an hour, so I asked at the bar. Two minutes later the pizza chef slams a pizza down on my table and shouts “it’s not one hour why are you lying?”. I clarified that I’d said at the bar that it’d been half an hour. He didn’t listen, again shouting “it’s not one hour”. I said again “I spoke to bar staff, I told him half an hour”, “NO, YOU SAID ONE HOUR!” I said “you’re actually being really rude now”, he again said “why are you lying? Wasn’t even half an hour” so I told him where he could stick his pizza and went to the bar for a refund. As I was talking to bar staff, the chef followed me, shouting “it’s not one hour! It’s not one hour”, and I told him he’s “f***ing rude”, and he became threatening “don’t you swear at me”, actually fronting up to me as if he wants a fight. I’m 42 and haven’t had a fight since school! I spoke to staff and they refunded my pizza. I said “I think you should refund my drink - it’s half finished and your chef is very rude”. The staff member pretty much laughed in my face and said “you’ve drunk it though right?” as if I’m trying to get a free alcohol free beer for the fun of it. “We can’t give you a free drink, it’s a different company, the chef is nothing to do with me” as the chef stands across the bar glaring at me. Eventually I manage to speak to someone senior, who refunds the drink and pretty much rolls her eyes at the chef “I’ll have a word, he can be like that sometimes” Wont be going back there

VERY overpriced food!!! £11.50 for loaded fries that were hardly loaded at all.. most other establishments charge £6 for the same sort of portion. Burgers are quite disappointing too (£12): no lettuce, no tomato, no sauce, no love! What’s really cheeky is if you order chips it’s £4.50 for an alright sized portion, but order with a burger they still charge you £4.50 but give you half the size as they put your burger in the same container.

I have never been treated so appalling in any establishment. THIS IS NOT A CHILD-FRIENDLY PUB! The landlady is a horrible, bitter women who cannot stand children and make sure parents know that. I went to this pub with my husband and my 2 children. Whilst there, I saw a friend and went to her table to say hello. My 7 year old followed me and the landlady told me ( and the whole pub ! ) that my son was running ( ? ). I tried to argued that he wasn't running but she wouldn't have that and she went on and on to make sure I understood her rules and that if he continue running around {?) we would have to leave. I felt very embarrassed but also upset as he was not running - he only followed me! My children are shy and quiet and understand/follow social rules. By reading other reviews, it seems this pub have a known reputation. There are plenty of decent pubs in E17 who need our support: run by decent people with common sense and respect for others, who embrace equality and do not treat parents and children different from other customers. The Nags Head, I am afraid, is not one of them! Why display signs that give a false idea that children are welcome when managers clearly can't stand the sight of them?

Much of the decor I recalled from past visits has changed and not for the better. The beer selection is good with several worthwhile ales on tap plus the usual Craft (fizzy) beer nonsense - but great if you like that. We had pizza between several of us, a veg dog, and a burger. The pizzas were fine and the Veggie dog went down well. The burger was dreadful. Apart from the tastes of the bacon and the cheese, I'd have been unsurprised to find a slab of carpet nestling in the bun. It was cooked beyond taste and texture. The vibe in the pub was fine until 20:00 when the background music rendered conversation impractical. The major surprise was the rapacious cost of The Nag's Prosecco. At £27:50 for a cheap bottle, it's remarkably expensive and nowhere near good enough to justify the price. It's a pity we didn't like the pub better. It's been a little spoiled by unsympathetic redecoration but, on the plus side, all the staff were lovely, helpful, and knew their business - I just feel that their inflated bubbles were taking the p*** ever so slightly. 6/10

We both ordered roast dinners- one chicken and one nut roast. The portions were huge. The gravy that accompanied the veggie roast was a too thick- almost like a thick pumpkin soup. The nut roast was also lacking flavour and was really heavy. The roast potatoes were crispy on the outside but were not fluffy inside. The chicken roast was almost quite bland too. Decided to try this out, has a lovely facade and good location but heard some negative reviews locally. Menu was just burgers, blah. Interior was badly in need of updating and just felt dark and grubby as soon as you step in the door. My husband came to meet me with baby sleeping in pram. He was greeted by a member of staff who advised children are only allowed outside, not inside the pub. Not feasible on a freezing cold December day. I'm all for 'child free areas' but treating them like dogs is just ridiculous. It doesn't matter what the menu or atmosphere are like, you miss out on so much business by alienating the huge number of young families that live in this area. Luckily there are loads of nicer pubs around which are accepting of children & babies so happy to stick to those.

The Nag is a good little boozer with a lot of character, a nice beer garden and a varied rotation of ales and beers. They also do live music on a Sunday, which is quite nice.Sadly the food is some of the worst I've ever had for their fairly steep prices - both pizzas we had were burned and absolutely dripping in oil. It's hard to convey just how saturated they were. Should also note that if the menu specifies "chillies" it's reasonable to expect chillies and not just a boatload of chilli oil. By all means have a nice relaxing drink here, but given you've got the Village down the road and Pepe's Pizza opening up in the Spar, there's no reason to eat here.

Firstly, I should begin by saying that we didn't eat here. We popped in for a drink and were contemplating getting something to eat but the menu was quite limited and bore no resemblance to the one featured on the pub's website; it was pizza or burgers and we didn't fancy either. Although the pub was quiet, service was slow (but friendly). We took our drinks out into the large garden at the rear of the pub. Only three other tables were occupied, which we thought odd given that it was a hot Saturday afternoon. Two tables were having food and we were astonished to see that the burgers and fries were served in the type of containers you get when you order a burger from a kebab shop. It may be an attempt at being "quirky" or far more likely a means of reducing the amount of dishes to wash, but I wouldn't have been happy paying over £10 for it and for it to be served to me as if I were standing up at a music festival or a fun fair. What really put us off the place though was the sheer number of prohibitive and restrictive signs everywhere, especially those relating to the presence of children in the garden. It did feel a bit like you were being shouted at and we're a same-sex couple without children. It just wasn't really conducive to creating a welcoming atmosphere and so we finished our drinks and headed down the road where we ate in a much more relaxed beer garden. It's a shame because it's a lovely old pub, although the interior décor doesn't match the exterior and with a refurb it could be a lovely village local. The signs should definitely go. By all means have one outside the front or one at the bar, but not cover every outside wall and door with them. Replace them with hanging baskets filled with flowers and you'd have a much more attractive and inviting space.

This is an historic pub in a quiet side street and features a delightful beer garden at the back (there's also a fair amount of seating at the front). You sit surrounded by bamboo, hops, ivy and other floral delights. Along with one other of my group I had a huge and excellent pizza, the other two went for the calzone - and they received the largest versions we'd ever seen. Great food accompanied by excellent English wine. Service was also genuinely friendly and interested in our assessment of the food. A very fine meal. But I regret there are some downsides. For a start the menu is far more limited than the pub's website states. It's just three versions of garlic bread for starters and then a range of pizzas (plus a few types of burger). Diners are informed that the standard pizzas on offer won't be modified (so no excluding a topping you don't like or adding one that you do -even when they're available for other pizza choices). And there are no desserts (not even ice cream) or coffee. It's a pity to let down a very pleasant offering with a such narrow approach to the range of choice customers expect.

Not visited in a long time. Nice to see that it is now a really nice pub although a little strange with red tablecloths. Very good range of beers. Nice garden although much smaller than i remembered. Really nice village pub. Good choice of pubs is Walthamstow village.

This is nearly a great pub - lovely quirky atmosphere, good selection of ales and a pleasant beer garden. There is however a reason I won't go back or recommend it. Almost every wall is adorned with numerous signs in red paint "shouting" rules and regulations at customers. It makes one feel uneasy and put upon. It creates a hostile feel and it's completely unnecessary, if not disrespectful. I'll take my custom to a place where I feel like a customer and where I feel appreciated. Luckily there are better pubs in walking distance!

Visit often, love the garden and the drinks, but varying opening hours, and varying menu offer is starting to irritate. The menu on line looks great, however it bears no resemblance to whats on offer when you visit. However, I have never been disappointed with the quality of food, just the options available.Used to be open every afternoon, now sometimes opens at 4 or 12 or !!!!

We went to the Nags Head for a pub Sunday lunch with a friend visiting from overseas. It was the first time we had eaten there, having gone for (good) drinks previously. The pork belly roast was overcooked and tasteless and the spicy sausage pizza a soggy mess of dough, peppery mince and raw onion - ugh. Worse still, we were sat in the rear terrace, across from a French family with their young children playing quietly nearby. Suddenly the landlady yelled 'Whose children are these?' and unceremoniously insisted children must be seated at the table, claiming there were signs up everywhere to say this. The only signs around said children had to be out of the area by 7.30pm (whereas this was lunchtime). The French family decided to leave as she continued loudly insisting. I hope at least they got a refund as they were still waiting for their food. wish we'd left before our food too - it was not only expensive but foul. Whatever you do, don't make the mistake of going to this place - it's dire.

This was a cute pub in a lovely area we chose to have a Sunday lunch with family. However, I have to report that one of the staff was not pleasant when she raised her voice to yell across the garden area "who owns these children?" Well one of them belonged to us and we owned up to him. She promptly told us to keep him in control. He and the other two children had been playing nicely and quietly together. Not running around stupid as was insinuated. The other couple were so embarrassed they left. There is a way of handling situations and this woman had no tact at all! I have to say this didn't apply to all staff. By the way...our meals were O.K.but would not recommend to people with children.

This place was a breath of fresh air - a place with a real personality of its own, rather than the generic gastro-pub setup. It won't be to everyone's taste, but they are friendly enough, have a decent selection of beer (including local brews) and put out a decent roast too. Add into the mix the outside space and garden, and I'm looking forward to spending a lot more time here come summertime...

This is such a laid back place. Come as you are, whether that be dressed in sequins and high heels or trackies or paint covered dungarees. Mis-matched furniture, great sound tracks, nice fairytale garden, good in house cooking. The jazz on a sunday late afternoon is great.

We visiting The Nags Head yesterday for a drink, as we have on many occasions. It now has a very strange atmosphere though which borders somewhere between a greasy spoon and a very down market restaurant. When we first arrived there were only a couple of people in there. Which considering the rest of the pubs in the village were full to bursting is very telling. The barmaids were sat at a table and seemed to be taking it in turns to go behind the bar to serve people before going back to their own table. This didn't really give a professional or even friendly service. What ensued was just a very odd experience (whilst we finished our pints as quickly as we could) which consisted of all the staff including who I assume is the manageress and the chef stood just a few feet away from us. We felt like we were being scrutinised. This is nothing personal towards the manageress but The Nags Head needs a complete overhaul of decor and atmosphere if it is going to capture its own share of the gastro pub market in Walthamstow Village. Ditch the dodgy table cloths and get some traditional pub furniture back in. The generic furniture and light walls give it a feel of a café and not a cosy village pub.

Very pretty looking pub right in the heart of the village, lovely fairy lights outside. We've been before and the punters are sweet and friendly. Happy, easy music. All you could want in a local pub, really. All the pubs in Walthamstow Village let dogs in. We went on a Sunday evening as there is live music on then. We took our six month old puppy (who is perfectly trained). We were looking forward to the live Sunday music, which we had heard so much about - but were told by the young staff member serving us to sit at the back, outside the pub, because we had a dog. This is before she checked if our dog was trained to sit quietly under the table and before she checked if our puppy is trained. She just said, "You can go outside as you have a dog. There is a heat lamp there." So we listened to the live music through the back doors, outside the pub, sitting by ourselves in 2 degree freezing weather with a heat lamp on our backs, which marred our experience sadly, and made us feel very excluded. We were on our own outside - everyone else inside, listening to music. We left sharpish, abandoning our drinks. The Castle pub, also in the Village allows puppies and dogs in and we have had wonderful drinks and meals there. I hope the Nags Head changes its policy because we love the landlady and the pub is beautiful and the punters are friendly.

Went here with a relatively large group (6 adults, 1 infant) on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. Was informed children can only be sat upstairs not in the main bar. They do not do hot drinks here, which we found out when one of the group ordered tea and was rather bluntly told she couldn't have it as they no longer serve hot drinks. There are no baby changing facilities and I was rather coldly told by the barmaid I should change my infant daughter on the (not exactly clean) bathroom floor when I asked about this. Yes, I appreciate it is a pub and therefore aimed at adults, but if it allows families then it should cater for this in bathroom facilities. The food was ok, being a Sunday, most of the party ordered various roasts which were of a good size and reportedly tasted nice. (Although if you are a vegetarian, it might be worth ordering the goats cheese burger- very tasty- rather than the nut roast which was apparently very dry and bland). However overall it wasn't a great experience and compared with other places in the village area doesn't seem to compete as a viable Sunday lunch venue.

A great local pub in the heart of Walthamstow village. Fab wine list and selection of beers. No TV or games machines, just good old fashioned bonhomie and opportunity to drink and socialise. Great music including live jazz every Sunday. Excellent monthly wine club.

This pub is one of my locals, and one I have always liked, so I am sorry to have to give this feedback. I was one of a group of eight people visiting, first for drinks and a meeting, after which several of us wanted to order food. There ensued a prolonged scene worthy of Fawlty Towers, in which almost everything in turn was declared to be "off". The staff member then claimed the kitchen was about to close, but there were some chicken burgers we could have - there was nothing in stock that did not include chicken, not even any chips. So as I do not eat chicken, it was clear I was destined to go hungry. A lady I take to have been the duty manager then came to our table, giggling, and said she was sorry there was so little food in stock, there would be more next week. I replied that as there was nothing I could eat that evening, that was no comfort. She offered me free chicken wings, but I replied I did not eat chicken. She then went away, but returned a few minutes later, and subjected me to a prolonged rant, during which she said she had never before received a complaint, accused me of shouting at her (not true) and claimed I had embarrassed her. Her attitude during this was angry, aggressive and totally unprofessional. I did not reply to anything she said other than to ask her to go away, which she finally did. Her behaviour was reminiscent of a seven year old child working herself into a tantrum. The only reason I am listing this review as "poor" rather than "terrible" is my previous liking for the pub - I can only hope that this was a one-of occurrence, and other customers will not be treated in this way. And that if food is advertised as being available on a Monday evening, then it will be.

We recently had an intimate wedding reception upstairs at The Nags Head (Madam La Zongas). Head Chef Nino created an amazing Vegan buffet as per our request. Each dish was bursting with flavour and colour. You can tell the team put love into their food -which I think is essential!! Many of our guests were not Vegan but commented on how everything they tried was delicious and that they were inspired. We couldn't have asked for a better service which came with consideration, creativity and friendliness. Thank you Nino, Antonio and all staff.

We usually go to the Nags for drinks and have never eaten there before as go elsewhere in the Village - The Castle and Queens Arms both do very good food. We tried their roast lunch today but really wished we hasn't bothered. It was really bland and the roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding tasted like they came straight from the freezer. For the price very poor value - will stick to drinks in future.

The Nags Head is a lovely local pub that serves delicious food and a good range of real ales. The garden is really pleasant, and perfect to relax in on a summer's evening. The bar staff are always really friendly, and the pub is in a nice quiet location. Every Monday evening there is a life drawing class that is run upstairs in the function room, and this class is fantastic. I would definitely recommend this pub as the best pub in the village.

I moved to Walthamstow about 10 years ago and this was the only decent pub around. Things have changed now and Walthamstow Village has lots of lovely pubs, but this is still my favourite! It is quirky and has lots of character. There are lots of different events here, including wine tasting, which is always a great night. The food is great and I personally find all the staff helpful. The best thing about The Nags though is the atmosphere. It is just so relaxed and has a fab vibe. I have also been to The Nags for New Years and it was one of the best NY I've ever had!

The Nags Head is in Walthamstow Village and in a quiet location so even if you sit on the forecourt it's pretty peaceful. Came here on a Saturday night so the front and back outdoor seating was pretty full. They do havea decent range of drinks here, can be slightly pricey but standard for the area. We had some food and they had a special menu on for the wine festival. I had a cheese fondue with meats, bread and veggies to dip. It was about £10. It would have fed two people but I had it to myself and it was pretty filling. Two of our party had hot dogs. They were just over £7 each. They were really tasty and had had some thought put into them. The last thing we had was a tear and share platter which had bread, olives, onions, meats and sausages. Easy enough for two people. We also had some chips which were good too. In my opinion one of the nicer pubs in the Village with a good atmosphere

We always walk past this pub and think we should pop in for a drink, and as the sun was shining this time we did. I wasn't overly impressed that one bottle of non-alcoholic beer and one diet coke came to more than a fiver. The inside of the pub had nice character and the staff were perfectly pleasant. The beer garden looked inviting, but it was affected by the usual unpleasant impact of people smoking. We drank up quite quickly to escape the fog! Didn't have enough money for another drink anyway!

We stumbled upon this place and decided to go in for some lunch. The pub has a nice relaxed atmosphere and has a good selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. The staff were friendly. The beer garden was lovely on a sunny day. The food we ordered come reasonably quickly and was absolutely delicious. The food and drinks were quite expensive but as stated were very good. Overall a brilliant experience and well worth a visit.

In many ways It's the villages best pub. Good choice of beer & atmosphere, great beer garden & good food. There's just 1 really annoying problem: the signs shouting from every wall...'No children in the bar. At any time'.....'no dogs' ....'no children after 7' etc etc. For a pub that succeeds so well in creating a cool & slightly alternative & arty vibe the signs are out of place & unnecessary & get under the skin making parents with young kids feel a bit unwelcome. The owners should realise when people feel they're shouted at & dictated too they loose a bit of loyalty & sympathy on occasions when standards fall short.

We went to the Nag's Head. There were two dogs running around inside, and we decided to bring our dog in. We ordered a round of drinks, and when we sat down, we were asked to sit outside, because dogs were not allowed inside. We were told that only the owners dogs were allowed inside, and that we had to finish our drinks out in the beer garden. We went outside, the heated area was full of people smoking, and we didn't want to sit there. It was too cold to sit in the unheated areas, so we decided to leave our drinks and go.A complete waste of a round of drinks, and the Nag's Head is the only pub we've been to in Walthamstow where only the owners dogs have a right to roam inside, whilst customers' dogs can't.With two-faced behaviour like this, we won't be going back.Frank & Trish

Came here back to my roots in Walthamstow.. Met up with friends, kids only allowed outside - kind of like a conservatory / extension of the pub. The food - what you order, you get... order a pizza and thats what you get. risotto? thats what you get... no garnish, no side salad. Not a generous portion either, but they DO have italian chefs and i guess that's meant to make up for things.. Well it doesn't ! I'm in no hurry to go back.

This restaurant is ridiculous. I ordered 2 meals and a starter. It came with no Parmesan cheese nor was the order correct. I asked to speak to a manager, the woman said i'm the owner and you're no longer welcome. £500+ was sent there on my son's birthday & his friend just had his at this restaurant. Don't go here!
