The Mine in Neath Port Talbot

Saw some good reviews online so booked here for a family meal during a sightseeing trip to wales. Heart sank a bit as we walked up to the place - down a side alley behind a post office. However, once inside it had a really nice vibe. Small and intimate without feeling crowded. Food was amazing and really generous portions. Service was great too. Came in just shy of £90 for family of four (including 2 hungry teens) - which included two starters, mains and drinks. Have eaten in a lot of other places for same price and much less value. Would definitely recommend.

Looked forward to this for ages and when I got there the toilet door handle was hanging off and the toilet was blocked which for me took the shine off the experience. Food was nice and we upgraded to shovels but I think that just gets you more chips for an extra £3. Don't think we will return.

Popped in for a late Sunday lunch. Ended up with The Shaft Platter was amazing. 2 x burgers sticky ribs tones of chips and amazing chicken. Well worth a visit and we will be back

When we arrived at The Mine we received a warm welcome and were shown to our seats, with the restaurant being in the small size and being full we were sat by the door and found it to be comfortable but cold when the door was opened. The staff were very attentive, and always seemed to have time for a chat and a smile and making us feel very welcome and homely. My wife had garlic mushrooms for her starter followed by a double southern chicken burger and french fries, but although she tried she found it to much, whereas I had king prawn starter and polished off my double southern chicken burger, but am I glad I still had room for desert as I had the white chocolate cheesecake, which wax one of the best I have had for a while, delicious, tasty and all the other superlatives that come to mind. A wonderful evening at atmosphere.

Not recommended! Have been wanting to visit for 3years. My husband surprised me with a meal here for my 40th birthday. We drove an hour to get there to be told the girl my husband spoke to on the phone a week ago didn't put the booking through! Then told us they had no tables. Drove an hour for nothing and now nowhere to go for my 40th birthday. Thanks for ruining it!!. We won't be coming again!

I visited this place as I had heard rave reviews about it previously. We arrived in a group of 6 and after ordering drinks were led to our table. The staff were friendly and attentive and our orders were taken with ease. Having ordered the anit-pasti as a shared starter, I ordered a Burger from their extensive menu and my partner ordered Lasagne. The portion sizes are on the large side and I wasn't surprised to see that my partner had not finished hers. It was only having returned home that she informed me that her Lasagne, whilst tasty, was still frozen in the middle (I am more disappointed with her not wishing to "cause a fuss" than the frozen food). Food apart, I felt the choice of live band was what stopped this review from receiving 5 stars. Whilst I appreciate that we were dinning on a Friday Evening, the live band was deafening. Our table was situated at the furthest end of the restaurant away from the band and without exaggeration, i thought my ears were going to start bleeding at some point. I could see other diners gesturing to the ears at the same time and upon leaving, spoke with an old friend who agreed that whilst the band were good, it was way too loud for such a small venue.

Would rate 0 if possible. Absolutely appalling service throughout which is such a shame because the food was beautiful. Staff were constantly slagging off customers in earshot of other customers. Constantly discussing that they need “table x out” making customers feel rushed. There was a certain brunette waitress who wasn’t in uniform instead had a “white fox” branded hoodie on, who was incredibly rude, and seemed to have a “ringleader” mentality, getting other staff involved with the “slagging off”. If the time slots aren’t working, you need to look at a different booking system rather than rushing customers who are paying higher than average for food in your establishment. One couple arrived earlier than expected and was told to come back in 20 minutes because “other customers coming in are a priority” and they said they didn’t wish to return, and of course the mouthy little brunette slagged them off in front of the whole tiny restaurant. I’m not typically a trip advisor user but the owner has conveniently turned Facebook reviews off. I’d save your money and go somewhere that isn’t a garden shed with no windows, minimal heating and no space to swing a cat.

Absolutely shocked and saddened by the poor service at this place. Its a shame as the food was lovely but would never return based on service alone. Staff were consistently slandering customers where other customers could hear throughout my visit, including ourselves. One waitress in particular in a beige hoodie was beyond rude and borderline offensive. Constantly being reminded that you need to be "out" at x time when you're trying to enjoy a meal out is far from ideal. If I wanted fast food I'd have gone to mcdonald's and saved myself £80+ in the meantime. The restaurant itself is pokey and cramped and for the money charged, you don't get the experience I was expecting. I'd avoid and find another local buisnesses where your custom is valued. My son in law has had a message from the owner after our visit telling us we are never welcome back, thankfully we weren't planning on anyway.

Good place to eat if you eat meat. Used to love going to this restaurant before they scrapped all of the good vegetarian options. They used to do veggie chilli, veggie lasagne, 2 different veggie burgers and more. Now all they do is a halloumi burger and halloumi fries according to their website menu. Very disappointing as used to love coming here. Feel like they are no longer concerned with vegetarian/vegans. 2 years ago I would have given 5 stars.

Took a family of 7 for a meal. Went for the 20oz steaks - only had x1 - told to order in advance. Absolutely fabulous food. Attentive, but not intrusive service and the GREATEST cheese cake EVER. 10/10 Also catered for celiac diner, who said best presented meal she had received. will be returning.

Dig this place. Well worth a visit for a BIG feed. I felt it was pricey but 4 of us ate for £80 which included a side dish and the tip. So, not ridiculous all told (unlike the portions!). The Bombay Bad Boy was £21 plus £3 supplement for it served on a shovel. And there were more expensive burgers on the menu. The Lasagne burger was £24 without the shovel. That said, the shovel does mean larger portions. You need to have the shovel experience for it's novelty. My daughter had two butterfly chicken breast in her burger bun. Absolutely huge! And tasty to boot. I wondered if the chicken might be over cooked and dry, as is often the case, but not so. It was just right, still tender and succulent. Very quirky venue tucked away behind the Premier shop. One of the tables was a cable drum on its side. Really warm atmosphere though, and the girls serving were gems.

My family want last night for my twins birthday. We booked the table back in August as we heard nothing but good about the place. However, when we arrived we walked in with my one year old Grandson and there was a huge table of people stood on the chairs and tables, singing, and shouting and swearing. I was tempted to walk back out but we travelled 80 miles round trip. Once we sat down we ordered drinks, I had a latte, it came half full (I asked for half a shot) I then asked three times for extra milk and sugar, after 20 mins they brought my milk but advised they run out of sugar. They started bringing the food out and got orders wrong and my Son (who's birthday it was) had to wait half hour after everyone else was served because they forgot about his order. When is order came there was no fillings in his burger just cheese. Melanie our server was one of the rudest waitresses I have ever come across, we tried to get her attention and she raised her hand and walked off, she was also seen mimicking me when I was complaining to one of the assistant managers. Gemma on the other hand was amazing and couldn't apologise enough, we ended up having most of the meals free and complimentary drinks. My Daughter then ordered a latte which came in a half pint glass and was advised to be careful as it was very hot, we noticed the glass starting to crack so had to complain again. The food wasn't awful but it certainly wasn't great. If you are looking for somewhere nice to eat and drink give this place a wide berth. It is as rough as they come and most of the staff and chefs need lots more training.

Waste of £40, didn't eat my rib and wouldn't bring it home for my dog because he wouldn't eat it either, i have been asked to confirm my comments by the owner well ok, i can confirm thay my wife and i sat down at 5.15 pm. could not have coffee (machine is broken) so ended with coke (2.50)per can, my wife had her food placed in front of her by 5.25 and it looked ok, my ribe came out at the same time and looked terrible, was not cooked and was pure fat, which could not be cooked the 10 minutes that we sat there, therefor it must have been (cooked) earlier (precooked), we paid our bill and left by 5.45 pm, my reason for not complaining at the time was a simple fact, it was our wedding anniversary, to the owner direct enjoy your £40 Vince chinnock

Well thought we would give this place a whirl for hubby's birthday, upon arrival instantly noticed how very small, dark, dinghy and quite depressing the one tiny room was, crammed with tables, chairs and long wooden benches, so close together there was no room to move or to get in and out for the toilets, no windows, no skylights, no ventilation at all, still we looked at the tiny menu & placed our order, the starters all in all looked ok and were eaten, the first main meal to arrive again looked ok, until it was put in front of us, wow the burger looked grey and crumbled away like sawdust, also they were all drowning in bbq sauce and rubbery tasteless cheese yukk, fries were floppy and full of oil, the child's chicken nugget meal was just gross, again grey in colour, the breadcrumbs just fell off dripping in oil, fries the same floppy & full of oil, very expensive for inedible food, young inexperienced staff, left to just cope, utter disappointment, couldn't wait to get out from there to get some fresh air into my lungs, not somewhere I would recommend or return too.

Well, where to start, this place really is a hidden gem! If you are after honest, tasty, and unique food then you need to try The Mine. The place is tucked up behind a corner shop, in the most unlikely of places. The Mine theme is the prominent as soon as you walk into the venue, and it works so well. It is not the biggest of places, but it is full of character and the staff greet you with a warm welcome. The service was quick and friendly and were able to answer any questions we had about the food they had on offer. The menu is by no mean large but there is plenty to choose from, and if you are foodie then you will enjoy everything on the menu. The meals are massive so not for the faint hearted 😂! But even with the mounds of food the quality is incredible. You can taste every ounce of love and passion that is put into food that is put out here. It was great to talk with one of the waitresses as we were paying up and getting ready to leave. She was more than happy to talk and explained how the place all came about. It was so nice to hear this from her 1st hand and she clearly was very happy in her work. I cannot recommend this place enough! If you want big wholesome tasty meal that is a feast for your eye and belly then this is the place for you!

Every dish was HUGE. They weren't even expensive. If you're coming here, make sure to order mains to share instead of 1 dish per person. The staff were kind and willing to help. The food was delicious. The music was accoustic covers of current popular songs, which was quite nice. It is a little bit too dim for my taste though.

If you like a huge pile of stodge this may be the place for you. Even the way it was piled up on the slate turned me off. Huge overcooked overpriced greased stodge. So much was wasted. Nice staff but we were told to leave...

So first of all I’d like to start by saying me and my partner are regular customers here, unfortunately we booked to attend here this evening at 1730 however my partner had a health check yesterday and was rushed to emergency cardiology as his ecg came back abnormal there was no way for me to contact the mines to make them aware as there is no signal in the hospital and we were having such a fright it didn’t even cross my mind until I saw £60 withdrawn from my bank account from them, I emailed the mines to explain what had happened and had a very unsympathetic reply back saying they will not be reimbursing me for the missed appointment as they have a policy now I’m well aware and appreciate a policy however when it comes to regular customers who have had a genuine reason not to attend I think it’s absolutely disgusting not to reimburse! Safe to say we will never be returning here nor will any of our friends or family! And I’d advise anyone to stay well clear because if anything happens to your family member where you can’t turn up you’ll be charged! Another thing was told I’d booked twice when I certainly didn’t! So must be an error with their system somewhere! AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!!

We enjoyed the evening. Didn't really have any complaints. Food was good. Setting was nice. However the waitress informed us that we had to leave in ten minutes. When she brought our desserts. If she had said before hand. We would not of ordered dessert. We was not informed when we booked the table that we had a time limit. Understandable that it is a small place. And they may need the tables For other guests. It would of been nice to be told about a time scale.

This is the second time I've been to the cwmgwrach branch and I've also been to the merthyr branch. Food was absolutely fantastic as always! Every time I've been I've had something different and I'm never disappointed! The portion sixes are big and the food tastes incredible! It's a lovely small restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere i recommend this place to everyone ! Won't be long I'll be back again!

Unassuming entrance to a real hidden gem. Standard choice of burgers and sides, ask about the daily specials. I had the upside down curry which was AMAZING. Incredibly helpful staff. In an area known for coal The Mine is a true diamond.

Just disappointed that they serve microwave frozen lasagne here. Not what I expected to be honest and the ribs were overcooked and very fatty. Definitely not worth the money.

Place was nice, looked forward for ages to dine here after seeing all the hype. But the food was OK, chips were really greasy and Hard. Would say the price paid wasn't worth the money and wouldn't go again . Although the dessert was spot on 100% worth every penny. But overall value for money from the main is a no go from myself. Staff were friendly and polite .

Disappointed, this visit portion size was a lot smaller than the last with the ribs ordered. There is plenty of flavour, just not of it, no change in the price point, no change on photos on Facebook, just not worth the money anymore 🙄.

Visited for a New Year’s Eve treat and what a delight it was! Never had such a huge burger before in my life and the quality was just as good as the quantity, really meaty burger. We will definitely be back

To clarify, you WILL need to book to get into this place. You will also need a hefty appetite. The meals are huge, are well done and are excellent quality. It's a little pricey compared to some other restaurants, but you don't often get many places doing food like these guys. I'd you've never been before you may struggle to find the place. It's actually down the side of a convenience store next to a pub. Once inside you'll notice it's very small, and is decorated in mining memorabilia. If you feel the urge to go bigger you will be served your meal on a (clean) shovel! It's huge! The desserts are massive too! You can even purchase a shovel dessert spoon to remember your visit! Highly recommended. However, just a few points:- * You WILL likely struggle a little getting from the entrance to your table if you are in a wheelchair. Moreso if the place is busy. * Parking may be problematic if the street in front of the convenience store is busy. You may find yourself having to park a little further away on the street. * Save plenty of room before visiting, the meals are very filling.

After waiting several weeks for a table at The mine I wasn't disappointed with the food or staff it was lovely. However when booking the 7.45 table and wanting to chill out with friends we didn't expect to be told at 9.15 we had 15minutes to finish. We spent £120 and no complaints whatsoever with food or staff. We felt we had to rush our bottle of wine and we would of loved to of had a coffee. If you wish to close early that's fine just don't take a 7.45 booking. We would expect at least two hours to eat our food. We will be back as the food was amazing. Please don't take this as a negative but that's how we felt. Thankyou Nicola
