The Mariner Bar & Restaurant in Down

The food was very good. I went for soup of the day to start and chicken stack for main course. Plenty of it. Staff are very friendly. Live music tonight downstairs. The atmosphere seemed good I definitely recommend coming here.

Came here for lunch around 12:30 on a Sunday. Went upstairs to dining area for food. Ordered Sunday roast (beef), chicken stack, sweet potatoes fries, and seafood tagliatelle. All the food was delicious. The seafood tagliatelle was a bit too creamy and liquidy, so was splatting everywhere. But still was tasty Service was top notch. The ladies who served us was really lovely. Upstairs, there are seats with great views of the sea. Can get a bit busy around 1pm.

Extremely friendly staff and dog friendly pub. Food was ok - just normal pub food. Location great right in the seafront. The pub itself is a hit sparce but has everything you need. 5 stars for particularly friendly bar staff.

We have had food here twice ,both times the meal was lovely. Friendly and helpful staff.Highly recommend the salt and chilli calamari.

One of the tastiest Roast Dinners I’ve had recently. Everything was cooked to perfection, the beef was exquisite. Service was fast, friendly and faultless. A great way to refuel after hiking Mount Donard on a sunny summer Sunday.

Such a lovely welcome for us and our dog. The staff was so lovely, they even gave us a little bowl of treats for the dog. Thank you so much!

Maybe just a quiet evening (Friday) and towards the end of food service (8.30pm) but a very disappointing meal presented, I don't often consider giving a less than positive review,but on.this occasion I was taken aback. Service was OK, but food was clearly reheated, and poor. Do better folks!

A little gem...My husband and i were here just last week for meal with my parents whilst on holiday and the food was outstanding, from starter to dessert...The staff were super friendly and looked after us well (like a 5star hotel) the Mariner would actually put many a hotel to shame. My husband and i actually went back for a second meal and it was beautiful...Everything cooked fresh.....Well done Mariner for knowing what the public really want..You have it nailed...we will be back :)

We could not have been made to feel more welcome as we arrived at the Mariner. Front of house was so friendly, taking time to find out about their customers. The upstairs restaurant was freshly decorated and provided a lovely atmosphere for our meal. The menu had lots of choice for all pallaettes with all being good value. The food was of exceptional quality and was full of flavour. Portions were good and filling. This is was very pleasant dining experience that we will repeat often.

We booked this on a Sunday, but we were running late, I rang and left messages because no staff to answer the phone, any how food was bland, sea food chowder has to much veg in it, same with my linguini, I don't like seafood, so opted for bacon and chicken, it was tasteless, my partner had scampi and chips, scampi tasted rubbery, and chips were awful, he never complained about food, so for him to force something to eat, it was bad, floor was very sticky, it really needed a good mop, lady who served vus was cheerful and pleasant,, even took money off our bill, but they really need more than one staff serving, because we had to keep trying to get her attention for simple things like sauce and vinager, no I won't be back, very Dissipointing.

Fantastic spot , really nice inside good seating large range of beer on tap,and a live band on a Sunday evening,food was terrific, service second to none

Stopped in for a light lunch and chose to have the chowder I went for the small one and it was very generous and tasty.

Just called in for bite to eat,great view staff friendly very clean food was delicious 😋 defo be back.

Honestly seriously disappointing. Staff who’d rather chat to each other than serve waiting customers. A table with 2 young couples at it who had clearly way too much to drink already yet were served more alcohol, We finally ordered and after an hour waiting for fish and chips were told it’d be at least another 30 mins waiting time. Absolute joke. And after saying he was busy the young barman went back to chatting to the girl he was working with. Can’t comment on the food as it never arrived so we left. Definitely won’t be back again. There’s an excellent chip shop in the town and too many other good places, don’t waste your time here.

Also very dog friendly and reasonably priced especially at lunch time with excellent portions

On entering, we found a table, and I went to get drinks. I lifted a menu, only to be accosted by a member of staff, asking who seated us. When I said nobody as he'd ignored us, he walked off. Ordered food, and honestly took about 30 mins for our 2 meals, nevermind the drink that never appeared. Barman with bald head and beard was very ignorant, and the young lad with moustache didn't want to be there. A 3rd guy, with a beard and glasses, couldn't have ben nicer. Food was good, but the service and dead atmosphere in the place lets it down a bucket load. We saw several families get up and leave due to the service. If you're hungry tomorrow, go today.

Been a lot of years since I was in here didn't even know it was called the Mariner and I live here! Food was amazing and the staff where very polite and nice to talk too.

Myself and my family had a beautiful meal there. The portion was big and nothing was too much bother. The staff was friendly especially Steve who was so kind to my 2boys and making jokes with them. Thank you we will be back

Can't say enough wonderful things about this restaurant, the staff, the service or the food. We chose this restaurant to have our wedding reception due to the location and it was the best decision ever! Every single member of the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and treated us like we were regulars. They were kind, helpful and amazing to us and our guests. Felt like we were all good friends before the night was through. They take exceptional service to the next level. Every meal was cooked to perfection and delicious. We even went back after the reception for a night cap and the staff had told the band we were newly married and they made a point to congratulate us and call us up for a dance as husband and wife. I could go on and on. So thank you all so much for making our wedding even more amazing. We'll Absolutely be back soon. Xx

Super great restaurant in a great location, right on the promenade on the 1st floor. So you have an unobstructed view of the bay. The food was great, we had nothing to complain about. We were given gluten-free food, vegan food and the child's special requests were also very happy to be taken into account. Best service, keep it up TOP

Disappointing versus online description and accompanying photos

Had early dinner here with my sister in law on Friday 26 August. Hadn't been here since previous owners, and was not disappointed! The food was delicious and the service by our lovely waitress Caitlin was second to none. Can't wait to eat there again!

Popped in for a bite of lunch and to take shelter from storm Betty. Staff were amazing and so welcoming. We had a delightful lunch, and the pepper sauce was delicious. We can't wait to visit again when we're next in the area.

If you enjoy a nice atmosphere and delicious food, then you are in the right venue. if there was 6 stars, it be there! Beef, seafood chowder are by far the best I've had! This is the place in Newcastle, county Down to give a shout. Food cooked to your requirements, unlike most, meats are fresh/ NOT frozen cheap cuts

Food and service first class. Traditional Sunday lunch of roast beef was one of the tastiest we've had. Beef cooked to perfection as were all the trimmings. Generous portion so no room for desert. Steve the waiter/barman and indeed all the staff were really friendly. Reasonable prices.

Steve and Kim made us feel proper comfortable there, great craic. Lovely people. Food is excellent and a great vibe. You can see the mountains and the sea and they’re dog friendly which was great. Our Bruce welcomed with a bowl of water on entry! 100% recommend a visit here!!

Will if you like good food friendly service this is the place to go. Good surroundings and nice sea views. I had muscles with fried sea bass with coconut curry sauce and skinny fries. Was to die for. Walked in of the street and were accommodated straight away with no reservations but would book a table just in case. We were lucky we just got at the start of service you can find them on Facebook and Instagram. 10/10

Always call in to the mariner with our 3 pups for a drink or food. Great Guinness and the food is beautiful. Had the Jerk Wings with gorgeous blue cheese dip followed by the Burger on Sunday and needed a lie down after it. 😂 The staff are lovely into the bargain very friendly and helpful.

Service was very attentive. We shared the scallops as a starter, creative dish, the flavours and textures worked well, however we were a bit disappointed with the size of the scallops. For the main, we had Trout (fish of the day) and the Mushroom bourguignon. The fish was perfectly cooked, accompanied by mussels. The mushroom bourguignon was very well presented, but the carrots were completely raw, not pleasant to eat. We felt like asking to pop it in the microwave as everything felt a bit cold. Perhaps they need to warm up the dishes for serving. I would come back as the service was very nice.

A great place to eat. In fact, you struggle to find a place in Northern Ireland that's bad. Situated in a breathtaking setting, you've a choice of the coastline or the mountains to marvel at

The food was really nice and high quality. Only thing I would say is that the food could have been warmer and the plates heated up, but still the food was lovely. The service was very good, all the staff were very friendly. Definitely would recommend!

Food was reasonably priced and what you would expect for a pub. Chips were lovely. There is a fish and soup of the day as well as specials. The lady with dark hair who was on the bar/serving was lovely, gave great service and very accommodating, a real credit to the business.

Lovely food and staff probably lacked atmosphere because there wasn't many people

We attended a recent tasting menu event prior to Christmas. We were very excited to see this sort of event in Newcastle as we spend more and more time here now. The chefs were extremely innovative and clearly had a passion for what they do. The service was excellent from the staff on the ground. However there was one issue which unfortunately really impacted the night and that was the wine and drinks service which we later found out was led by senior management/the owner. When we provided feedback on the event privately, that we were left feeling excluded and unable to purchase drinks in the restaurant, we were accused of being drunk and imagining the issue and the respondent actually appeared to find it quite funny despite the feedback being given with positive intent. The feedback was therefore not taken on board. I felt it was important to highlight this for other potential customers. If you aren't known to the restaurant, your experience might be quite different.

Little bit limited choice this time of year but food excellent and portion size huge. Good attentive service and well worth a visit.

Had the steak, which was ok, cooked correctly but lacking flavour. Others food seemed better but not as impressed as the reviews suggest. Service was very slow. I think something must have happened for that given how long it was and did offer a refund, which was good. Tempted to try again at some point. Maybe it was an off day for the kitchen, but it was not the best place locally ive been, contrary to the reviews on here.

There where 6 of us Adults. Food was good, though the Scampi portion was small. Only one choice of Gluten free main course. That my Wife could have !.

We were looking for a cozy restaurant for lunch where you can eat with family and dog. We received a very warm welcome and had great service and very good food. Highly recommended!

Absolutely would recommend! The vibe is very cozy yet classy. Our meals (beer battered cod and the pan-seared hake) were both delicious. We shared the soup of the day (white onion) which was also excellent. Service was great and price was reasonable.

The turkey an ham was fantastic, a real Sunday dinner but my husband was very disappointed with the batter on his fish. Said it was soggy but the fish wad good.
