The Live And Let Live in Colchester

We’ve attended the quiz for the last few months and the atmosphere is always great the food is always warm and tasty, last night we brought my father for the first time, after checking that the building was wheelchair friendly they said it was well………. We were advised to use the back door, which had stones all the way across the path, the doorway first of all had two steps to get in and secondly I had to have my father get out of the chair so I could collapse it enough to get it through the very narrow door, to cap it all off the toilets were in accessible for him, if there had been a fire we would have had real issues I think, so while he had a good evening I feel like some changes need to be made to make it more accessible for him to return

The pub is tucked away and not obvious that it's there, we were recommended this place as being the only viable pub in the village of Stanway. We went with family for a Sunday roast, and while the food was mediocre at best, we were disappointed with the cleanliness of the establishment, the floors looked like they haven't been cleaned in a long time, and the toilets were absolutely stinking and disgusting, both the male and female toilets were in need of a deep and thorough clean. In our opinion, the food itself was overpriced for the quality, and there are other establishments in the area that are similarly priced, and better quality. Would we go back? Probably not unless we hear that the food has improved, and the place has been cleaned and looks more sanitary.,

Came for a roast dinner today with my husband and wow! The positive reviews in here did not disappoint! Staff welcoming and friendly, I can be a bit of a demanding customer but I felt very well looked after by the lovely bar and food serving staff. The atmosphere was lovely, busy but not heaving so we could have a nice conversation whilst we waited for our food. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the pub offers more than roasts on a Sunday, but we decided to go for the beef standard roast with parsnips and pigs in blankets as extras. The meal arrived promptly, the portion was generous and it was all cooked to perfection. The Yorkshire pudding was huge and delicious. Unfortunately, there was no room for dessert, but the table next to us had some and I asked them what it was like. They told me they come especially for the pudding sometimes as it’s homemade. We also sampled some of the ales, which were great. All in all we gave 5 starts and we will definitely be back, can’t wait to come in the summer and enjoy a pint in the beer garden. What a gem! Oh and plenty of parking too !

Saw this place advertised and recommended by a few on FaceBook, after moving into the area - and my goodness what a let-down - went for a Sunday Roast, the veg was hard, only 3 small roast potatoes and the beef was dryer than cured leather... The staff were rude, and made you feel like you weren't welcome - maybe because we are new to the area and it's a clique place?? Sadly, this will be our only visit, and we will explore the other places in the area - feel that it's a real let down given the number of reviews I've seen recommending the place. Not great to bring friends from afar, to this...

We came here for a Sunday carvery with quite high expectations as this pub was rated in the top 10 of pubs in Colchester for a Sunday roast by the gazette , but we were pretty disappointed to be honest, the portions were pretty good but was let down a bit by the standard, it wasn’t the worst roast I’ve had in a pub but certainly wasn’t the best, the gravy was watery, the cabbage was quite hard, meat was a little dry, potatoes were ok but could do with being a bit crispy, we were also disappointed with the deserts.. a couple of us ordered the meringue mountain.. expecting there to be a fair bit of meringue as the name suggests! Well it was hard to find meringue in it! It should have been called cream mountain, about half a meringue in it, bit of ice cream and strawberry and the rest squirty cream! Others had sticky toffee pudding.. all complained about it being salty, Safe to say won’t be returning

I was here recently and tried the festive sandwich off of the November specials menu, which was excellent! A really well put together sandwich with turkey, stuffing, Brie and cranberry sauce which came with roast potatoes, pigs in blankets and gravy on the side. I’ll definitely be back soon to have another one before it goes! I’ve had some other great food here recently including some of their pub grub classics as well as a cracking roast dinner. The atmosphere in the pub was really good too with a tv that shows live sport, pool, darts and a jukebox. And obviously with it being a pub they have a wide range of drinks which will cater to everybody.

Separate menus for vegetarian and meat eaters, staff friendly and beautiful garden area. Would definitely come again and recommend as the food was delicious. They also have gluten free and vegan menus too

Excellent value and great service so will certainly go again. We all enjoyed our food choices and the portion sizes where generous.

Had cod and chips very e disappointed expecting hand batterd fish not run of the mill frozen product Wife had lasagne said it was lovely Granddaughter had ham baguette with chips also liked it her partner had a American burger and he also said it was nice Lol I must be unlucky at picking the right item

Took my partner for his birthday dinner here . I had booked table and pre ordered food . We were not disappointed , food was home cooked and amazing as usual . Good value for money and service great . The Sunday roasts are also to die for , thank you phil and Julie ❤️

Booked in rather last minute for a Sunday Roast, staff were very accommodating as always and allocated us a table where we could tuck our dog into the corner away from others (the venue is very dog friendly, unfortunately our dog isn't!) I had a standard roast beef, as did my husband and step son. I struggled to finish it all so my husband helped me out! We shared some pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese and stuffing. Only my step son had room for dessert (chocolate orange brownie). Service was excellent as always. Food wholesome and delicious. Will continue to return on the regs!

The occasion was spoilt by the most grumpy bar maid we have ever come across. She was rude and impolite. Not a single smile to us, or anyone else the whole time we were in the pub ! Shame, because the food was great.

Attended yesterday for the Pie and Beer Festival. Enjoyed a lovely steak and ale pie and a pint of cherry mild. I have reviewed this venue before, and it is excellent. Just putting this here to advise you to like their facebook page, as they frequently do festivals and special evenings, and these are always great and excellent value. Come early, as by Sunday some of the pies had sold out! Still family and dog friendly venue.

Had a lovely meal of steak and all the usual trimmings., including mushrooms and onion rings which you don't always get these days. The steak was superb and cooked just how I ordered it. I then had the meringue mountain which was really delicious and full of surprises. Would certainly recommend.

Fantastic pub wee pub. Really good quality food and the staff where so polite and helpful, even put the scottish cup final on for the only one in the bar. Brilliant wee place highly recommend.

I popped into the Live and Let Live with my cousin and her husband yesterday. They are always busy on a Sunday, but even more so as it was Mothering Sunday. I didn't have a table, and wasn't planning food, but Maz managed to find one for us which was much appreciated. I enjoyed a few drinks, and has my cousins husband looked at the menu on the table next to us, and saw other peoples HUGE yorkshire puddings come out, he changed his mind about food! Despite being exceptionally busy, they were able to serve him up the delicious prawn cocktail that he ordered. One thing that I must add, is that I am 99.9% of the time with my dog, as I was yesterday. I am always seeking dog friendly Essex pubs, and yet for some reason The Live and Let Live never comes up on my searches, so I would like the world to know they are very dog friendly, inside and outside!! Can’t fault them! Friendly staff who are always accommodating Excellent beer, wine, cocktails, food …… Great place for couples, families and group bookings Funky huts in the garden (with heaters) to keep the rain or sun off your head. No under 18’s in the bar after 9:00 pm Regular events too (Eg. Comedy nights) Proper, decent pub! We love it! 🥰

Lovely pub with fair prices. Tried out a comedy night there and the patrons were love and their food was delicious. Loved the curried chicken pies! Highly recommend.

We stumbled across this gem of a pub while walking the dog. What a costly mistake that was! Having spent thousands on shots, brilliant selection of real ales and great quality food over the many years we've been coming back. Popped in for a pint of lunch today (which did come with a steak and kidney pie and chips) which was lovely, my lunchmate had a massive bowl of chilli and chips which looked and smelt excellent which is what we've come to expect. Friendly regulars, fantastic staff but questionable nicknames, I'm very proud of my local. Didn't even mention the beach huts!!!

We call in to the live and let live for lunch today and had the sharing platter. and they offered to split it half vegetarian and half meat which was really nice of them , it was the nicest thing that we have eaten for a long time 10/10 form us it’s a November special hope they keep it on the menu , the the real ale is great alway something new to try .🍻👍 and all the staff are so nice and helpful thanks 🙏

The live and let live is a great local pub suited for family and friends and is dog friendly. The food is fantastic and incredibly well priced, the beer and ale selection is perfect for whatever you fancy. Finally the bar staff are so welcoming and always serve with a smile.

I regularly collect a takeaway roast dinner, always a great meal, packaged well and hot. Good selection of meats and sides plus the option to add a dessert. I highly recommend for a great meal 😀

First time having a Sunday roast at the Live and it was absolutely amazing. Everything cooked to perfection and the gravy was out of this world. Can't recommend the Live and Let Live enough.

Went with friends for early Christmas Dinner. Great food, massive portions and brilliant service from all the staff, but especially Maz as always. Extremely good value. Highly recommend.

After a 20 mile bike ride, the monthly breakfast club is very welcome. Lots of choice and wonderfully cooked. Service and atmosphere top notch.
