Thanks for a lovely weekend. We left the hotel we were booked into and the Lion came to the rescue. The reception staff were very helpful. Room was cosy and comfortable. Bar staff were friendly. Really nice!

Definitely recommend it and as the setting and the ambience was just beautiful, the music was light and service was great too.

Visited here with family, on a very wet day outside, Shrewsbury was buzzing but the lion was quiet. I think there was a serious shortage of staff as not only ordering drinks and food left us having to go and find someone to take the order the tables weren't cleared very quickly. On saying that we were able to relax and weren't under any pressure to vacate our table. The food was average as good as any sandwich! The place was clean but I think they could reorganise staff levels and their paying system more efficiently.

Went to this hotel with a voucher offer but would certainly go there again as the prices were good for the quality food served. the choice of dishes for each course excellent but it was the presentation and quality that stood out . Nice atmosphere in a relaxed traditional way.

We stopped hereon the way home from Aberystwyth to Oxford. We were too early for food but were made a wonderful (much needed) cup of tea by a very friendly, welcoming landlord. The landlord and a great local by the name of Les gave us some help with our route and made us feel very welcome. Thank you both for such a wonderful stopover.

We had a voucher from Trip Advisor, so our meal was a set menu for £14.50 per person. If we had had to pay the usual price, I would have returned both the starter and main course. I had chicken pate for starters. ( I misread this, as did the lady on the next table and thought it was chicken liver pate...who ever heard of chicken pate?). It was 2 balls of tastelessness with a little salad. For my main course I had hake. They drowned the fish with charizo sauce. How could they put these 2 together? ...a delicate fish with a strong flavoured sauce. It was not even a sauce, like parsley sauce. It was fairly liquid and had bits of sausage in it. I asked for vegetables instead of potatoes and was presented with green beans, which were tasty, and small carrots with their tops and tails still on. The sweet was good.. Creme caramel... Can't really go wrong with that. The waitresses were students doing a holiday job. They did their best. It was downstairs and very dreary..no atmosphere. We were very disappointed.

We first visited this hotel last February and were delighted with everything. It has a great location, good parking (a must in Shrewsbury), helpful, friendly staff and bags of old world charm. On our recent return visit we found all these points still in place, however the breakfast, which had previously been very good, was appalling and its' service indifferent. Such a shame, however the hotel is still a good venue at a reasonable price and there are plenty of decent breakfast options locally

Acceptable 3 course meal , £29 for two , ate July 2016. Menu not as on web site prior to and after purchase. Limited choice but generally good quality . My partner had the chicken option for a main course, plenty of chicken but with little sauce and no seasoning so rather bland. The beef was much better but personally I would have preferred more than a teaspoon of gravy. The service was excellent .

Some of the food on the limited menu did not match the description. After this restaurant was recommended to us, my wife and I thought we would try the Salmon and lemongrass fishcakes with an Asian peanut salad. This was under main courses on the menu for £9.50. After a wait of 35 minutes, we were served 2 salmon patties with some potato in them but no sign of lemongrass and accompanied by a garnish with no sign of peanuts. Maybe as a starter but certainly not a main and definitely not at this price. No dark beers or stouts available either.

We recently had an event at the Lion and the staff were friendly, helpful and couldn't do more for us. The food we had was fantastic and we'll certainly be popping in to have Sunday lunch in the restaurant soon. Thank you Lion Hotel.

Not sure if leaving a review of the hotel for just food is quite right - but we didn't eat in the hotel restaurant (The Hayward) either, just in a lounge area off the hotel bar. Popped in for afternoon tea yesterday. Set selection of sandwiches so if there are two of you you get all four choices as standard which were nice and a good variety. brown bread was a little bit dry but the fillings were all nice and fresh. Lovely coffee (if you don't want tea). Scones, carrot cake and chocolate covered flapjacks to follow. Not sure the flapjacks fitted because they felt a bit heavy and dry after very moist cake. Wish we'd kept a bit of cream aside from the scones for them. Overall very happy though and would recommend and visit again. It's about £10 for one person I think, but £16 for two, so take a friend for better value.Previously we had considered coming to the Lion for lunch but been put off reading the menu outside because we found the prices to be quite a lot. They seem to have had a re-think and the bar menu seemed much more reasonable than we remembered, and the evening restaurant menu was better price than we remembered from previous visits a few years ago (£10-15 for a main now.)Now we realise this we might be visiting for dinner sometime soon.

We called in here for a quick lunch while out shopping and we were not disappointed. There is a good choice of light meals, sandwiches, soups etc. Our meals were served promptly and were delicious.Good job we are not vegetarian, though, as we would have struggled for something to eat.Toilets are very clean, and staff are lovely..

Visited this hotel restaurant, with a Travelzoo coupon, with family members. While the hotel looks amazing from the outside (very old, half-timbered building), some of the public areas inside looked a little run down. On entering the restaurant we were all struck by the smell of fish which seemed to hang in the air. There were very few diners when we arrived, and within about 30 minutes we were the only people in there. The food was quite nice but not spectacular, and I would have considered it expensive had it not been for the coupon we had. There were 2 servers, both from Lithuania I believe, and they certainly weren't busy, but at no time did they ask if we would like more drinks. Overall a little disappointing.

Without doubt, the Bell Inn is one of my favourite pubs! They have a fantastic variety of beers (with digital menus showing tasting notes) - but they are always happy to recommend and they know their stuff. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. The beer garden is great too and there’s outdoor heating. A very solid 5 stars!

It was quite busy with Christmas shoppers. I bought 4 items, but when I got home, I decided that the curtains were not suitable. I took them back yesterday and got a full refund. Then I bought some towels. They are good quality and good value
