The Kingfisher in Allerdale

Four of us arrived five minutes before closing and made a massive order on behalf of a group of 14 walkers. The team took this in their stride, even with other latecomers making orders at the same time. They cooked everything up for us right away and even stayed open a little after hours to do so. Staff were good craic and all the food was delicious. Mixture of meals including fish, scampi, and sausages (all with chips). Brilliant experience all round!

Delicious steak pie so much meat and hubby had meat and potato pie lots of filling. Chips are very tasty too! Great fast service and friendly staff.

I searched for homemade Cumberland sausage and ended up here. Parking is available nearby for 1.9 pounds per hour. The sausage was delicious and there was enough of it that I didn't get tired of it. The cup of tea was also gorgeous, and when mixed with milk, it was mellow and matched well with the spicy sausage. What's amazing is that all the store staff are extremely professional. I choked while eating something green (green peas?), but I quickly asked, ``Do you need some water?'' He quickly brought me water with ice. thank you. From start to finish, everyone greeted everyone with a big smile, and they even talked to me in a friendly manner at the cash register. However, there was no guilty chip (I regret that I should have done that because there were people who left coins, I'm not used to it) Also, it's usually cheap. It's about 15 pounds when you're full. This time it was a little hot and humid in the store. I want to come again.

Evening meal with wife. Good quality chip shop fare. Comfortable restaurant. Staff friendly and welcoming. Relaxed atmosphere with efficient service. Great value with good sized portions.

Very highly recommended ! Always go here, every trip to Keswick. It's lovely, warm, clean and friendly, the fish n chips etc are second to non. Unfortunately they cannot cater for disabled as it's upstairs, but you can just buy from the downstairs bit and take it away. Please note, no dogs allowed upstairs in the restaurant.

Never visited before even though we must have walked past so many times. Without a doubt the best fish and chips we've had. We went up and sat in the dining room which was spotless. Lovely staff too! We'll be back.

Had a takeaway and food was very good and chips not greasy. They remains were even nice the next morning. Noticed later they make their own sausages so wish we had tried them

I recently visited The Kingfisher in Keswick, and I can confidently say it was one of the best fish and chip experiences I’ve ever had. The food was absolutely excellent—crispy, golden batter perfectly encased the freshest fish, and the chips were cooked to perfection: fluffy on the inside and beautifully crisp on the outside. The portions were generous, and the quality of the ingredients was evident in every bite. Even the sides, from the mushy peas to the tartar sauce, were spot on. The staff were friendly and efficient, ensuring the food was served hot and fresh despite the shop being quite busy. If you’re in Keswick and craving top-tier fish and chips, The Kingfisher is a must-visit. Highly recommend!

Very impressed with this place - the food is very tasty & good portion sizes, the service always prompt & polite & efficient. Believe me, a lot of businesses I've come across in the last week would do well to learn a few things from you. Only small niggle I have is, though menu has several choices, they could have a wider range of desserts - if that were to happen, I would call this place outstanding - would certainly recommend!

Proper place for fish and chips and cumberland sausages

The wife and I decided to dine in today instead of a takeaway. Lovely and warm in the cosy seating area. Also very clean and the staff very pleasant. We had 2 x fish & chips, peas, curry sauce and a pot of tea. Best takeaway and dine In in Keswick. Fish is fresh, chips nice and brown and tasty. The curry sauce was sweet and fruity. The peas are peas, mushy but not much taste to be honest. I've recommended to my friends again. Hopefully we will be back soon.

Got the large fish and chips with a side of mushy peas. The chips were really well cooked and crispy as was the fish, the service was really efficient too. We'll definitely be back again to try unusual options like haggis.

Great, authentic, traditional chippy. I never have high expectations of finding decent fish and chips in a tourist town as they are usually tourist traps. However, stumbled across the cafe upstairs at the Kingfisher, and it was a lovely place. Spotlessly clean, great service, crispy cod, lovely chips, and mushy peas all served hot and fresh with bread and butter...yum! Would visit again, thank you.

Had their so- called "speciality" Cumberland sausage and chips, with baked beans, the best bit was the beans! Sausage had been kept warm, dry and hard and chips were average to say the least, the wait to be served was also an age with people ordering after and being served in front of us, not a good experience 😢

Used to be excellent then went through a dodgy patch which we avoided for quite a while but happy to report it is back to it's best, as we had lunch a week ago, some on here criticise ( to crispy chips ) sorry that's just personal, we found the chips and fish batter perfect , don't be put off with the negative comments try it for yourself then comment

Quite possibly my favourite chippy in England!

Didn't expect my fish and chips to be as tasty as it was. 10/10. Batter was outstanding and were the chips. Two very happy tourists who will be ordering again before we head home!

Ate in the upstairs restaurant as was raining outside. Had the extra large cod and managed only a half 😂 Fab fish chips. Proper old deco. Can have buttered bread and tea

Really enjoyed a delicious take away from The Kingfisher, whilst staying over in Keswick recently. Everything is in cooked in palm oil, so is great for vegetarians, with plenty of veggie options also on the menu. Can thoroughly recommend the cheese & onion pattie, superb! Will definitely return when next in the area, one of the best chippies I've visited.

Extremely friendly and helpful staff in the restaurant. As usual everything was superb. I had the turkey and ham pie with chips and my wife had the gluten free fish cakes + chips and mushy peas. The restaurant and toilets are always clean and well maintained. As good as it gets for a chippy ! Highly recommended.

Superb chippy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I took 3 business guests here as part of a trip to show them the English countryside. Coming from Morocco and Saudi Arabia they had never eaten fish and chips from a chip shop before. The chips and fish was crispy, with no grease. Everyone was really happy with the portions and quality Next time I am in Keswick I will most certainly return…this time with 2 tubs of peas 🤩

Welcome was as usual, very friendly, service as usual, fabulous, food exceptional as always. No complaints what so ever. We had Pensioners fish and chips, more than adequate size fish with chips and mushy peas. Tea was as always excellent. Very reasonably priced for the amount you get. We would love to visit more often but live some distance away. Thank you to everyone at the Kingfisher, who make it a memorable occasion. :) We would give it more than 5 star if possible. This is an absolutely fantastic place to eat. I had the fish and chips which were cooked to perfection lovely crisp batter and perfect golden chips. I also had a pot of tea with a slice of bread in a restaurant for just over fifteen quid. Would definitely go again and have no hesitation in recommending this place to everyone

We often interpret a queue outside a fish and chips shop as a positive sign of quality, this proved to be true here. Fantastic chips from an award winning chippy, a welcome treat after an afternoon walk! For me this can only be improved upon by walking down to Friars Crag to enjoy while taking in the view across Derwent Water to the Jaws of Borrowdale! Stunning!

Large cod and chips, the fish took up most of the plate, very well cooked. We were very satisfied, friendly staff and good service.

We visited fir first time today about 1 pm on recommendation ! Staff were excellent and the 2 pensioners specials were absolutely gorgeous ! Will be making this a regular thing when we visit Keswick !! Well done to all staff!

The homemade Cumberland sausages are supposedly its specialty. The food was good value for money. The service is friendly and prompt. Nice homely atmosphere.

Always go here for a takeaway when I visit Keswick and always proves why it is noted for fish and chips supper. Some of the family came this time and all enjoyed the meal, even the daughter who said that usually only eats the fish ate all of the batter. Well recommended 😋

We were looking for a decent fish and chip shop for a takeaway while on holiday in the area. We checked the reviews and decided to try it. The queue out of the door when we arrived was a good sign with locals and tourists. Friendly staff and the food was lovely and portions huge. If you want decent fish and chips I would highly recommend you pay them a visit.

Takeaway fish and chips... I've always believed that the best fish and chips can be found on the yorkshire coast, but these were every bit as good. Blasphemy I know, may be it was all the mountain air but they were a perfect end to a day in the hills.

We went to this fish and chip shop about 8 years ago so decided to revisit as in the area again. Not like it was before, maybe new ownership? Firstly we were told the table would be needed back within the hour. Generally unless the service is very slow, you’d normally be done within the hour having standard fish and chips. It felt odd to say this, it wasn’t like we were out for a romantic 3 course dinner. Only a choice of large cod, fish or plaice. Didn’t feel I could manage a large cod, ‘fish’ could be anything, so we went for the plaice. Edible but tasted and looked like what you’d get in a box of findus or birdseye fish. Good portion size for the money but was disappointed as it was very good in here last time. Places do change I guess

Always excellent fish and chips here. We’ve used the upstairs restaurant also, which provides good serve. Today we had a takeaway. Plenty of chips, lovely battered fish, good service. It’s my only port of call for fish and chips in Keswick.

Very pleasant and efficient service especially from the lovely smiley Merrick! Food freshly cooked and piping hot. The Cumberland sausage was large and delicious and my husband loved his home made steak and kidney pie.If you are in Keswick give the Kingfisher a try. You won’t regret it! 🤗

So refreshing to find a fish & chip shop/restaurant who cater for coeliacs and people who are gluten-free. The proprietor reassured us when discussing how different fryers are used for chips, and for gluten-free food, with a separate food preparation area. He gets it! My husband had the Cumberland sausage and I had smoked haddock & mozzarella fishcakes, both with chips and mushy peas. They were both really lovely and the chips were definitely in my top three favourites ever! They do takeaway but we sat in the nice restaurant area upstairs, by the window with views over to Latrigg and Skiddaw. Highly recommend this place. Update - we loved it here so much we went 3 times in a week!

Fantastic chippy. The Kingfisher Cumberland sausage is unbelievably good. Well cooked crispy chips and unusually tangy curry sauce. The fish looked lightly battered and well cooked. Next time I'm in Keswick will be paying them another visit.

Wise to book at busy times because this is an iconic restaurant that everyone wants to eat in. The food is very traditional, fresh and tasty. The service is efficient, unobtrusive and welcoming. First class!

Gluten Free options with dedicated fryer

Afternoon in keswick with my daughter take away fish & chips, jumbo sausage & chips a bag of scraps & a tin of pop food was delish best chippy food we have had in a long time, walk 10 mins to car and food was still piping hot. good price £15.90 and plenty of food, were we live it would of cost a lot more. will defo return when we visit again. lady who served us was lovely

AMAZING fish and chips. Ate in...came out served piping hot. I love it when fish and chips come out and you can't help but say 'wooo' when you see a lovely big piece of fish on your plate. Loads of chips too. And wow, how tasty. Perfectly cooked, full cod, soft fish and light crisp batter. Chips cooked to perfection. For such a simple dish so many places get fish and chips wrong. Very pleased to say that The Kingfisher gets it spot on. Next time I'm in the Lakes will be back for more.

A family run fish and chip shop. Really friendly people, nice to chat whilst food was cooking. Bonus they also sell their own Cumberland sausage and dry cured bacon. The fish and chips were really good. Wife had a cheese and onion pattie which was very good. Definatly visit again next time we are in Keswick

Had Cumberland sausage and chips. The Cumberland sausage was the best in the world. Seasoned to perfection, meaty and succulent. You can tell they use top quality ingredients. The chips were also top quality, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. We also bought some fresh Cumberland sausage to cook at home, it was fantastic. The only problem is I have to drive 3 hours to buy some more.

The Lake District in Cumbria is a stunning place to visit, renowned for its restaurants, especially fish and chip shops. During my visit, I heard about The Kingfisher and decided to try it. Their smoked sausage and Cumberland sausage were exceptional, and I'd definitely return for more. The cheese savoury was delicious, featuring plenty of stretchy cheese and seasoning. However, the battered cod was disappointing—bland and the batter was also bland and a little gooey on the inside. When I parked in front of The Kingfisher, the staff watched us from behind the counter, likely wondering if we’d come in, which was fine, though inside, I received some odd looks, which made for a strange and cold atmosphere. A young man served me; he was friendly, polite, and answered my questions about the sausages. He was a credit to the business. The shop was clean, tidy, and well-presented, with a restaurant section. You always get a good meal with quick service.

They had ran out of cheese and onion pies when I got there but the haddock and mozzarella fish cake was very tasty. Great chips as well.

I asked a lady in a local shop where I could get good chips and without hesitation she said the Kingfisher. She was right, these are possibly the best chips I’ve ever had!

Popped in today to buy some fresh cumberland sausage ,had it for my tea tonight ,its the best cumberland sausage ive ever had ,lovely and peppery good and meaty ,and taste like its made with good pork ,going back in tommorow so i can take some back to yorkshire for myself and my chubby mate who also loves sausage 😁👍

Popped in while going through the area and was not disappointed! The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was very relaxing and welcoming. The food was all warm, tasty and filling. Will definitely go here again if I'm ever in the area!
