Really nice pub, it was empty when we arrived but I think that's more to do with a football match ending in the area

I feel the picture attached summed the place up well enough to the point the owners must have this here intentionally. Follow all the hipsters to the same place and hunker down from the scary world outside that isn’t white middle class. If you want a monoculture drinking hole then this is the place for you. Of course it would be better if it were a lemming and not a monkey, but the idea is the same. Good selection but you have several off licence’s providing better at a fraction of the price, so just go to one of them and use their outside tables.

Not really a pub atmosphere. More like a school dinner hall with hipsters instead of students. In an ethnically mixed area the clientele is 99% white - first red flag. Beers are pricey, but a good selection. The staff are strangely hostile and plain rude if you haven't pre-booked a table! The place was almost empty the day me and my wife tried to sit down at a table - we sat at the window after being told we couldn't sit there. Since when did pubs turn into restaurants?! The food (Indian) is good, but again, very pricey for a curry. I won't be coming back. Shame as it had potential. Relax the reservations, drop the prices and the attitude and you'll have a different pub entirely.

Really enjoyed some food and a couple of pints here on my birthday (December 23). It's an amazing place - I mean I love my Yard Sale Pizza as much as the next guy and applaud their ubiquity but this is genuine Indian food (which, for me, still represents a welcome change). Awesome beer and really comfortable interior. A top place.

Hands down the best Sunday roast I've had at a pub in quite a while! The pork was delicious and the roast potatoes were perfect. All the vegetables were well- seasoned and there was enough gravy to cover the whole plate, including the massive Yorkshire pudding and soften the pork crackling. Everything was tasty and I'm looking forward to trying a different roast next time :)

Really disappointing, ended up leaving after a few bites of food, watery curry with 4 pieces of thigh meat chicken inedible. The nann bread was thin and crispy not like the usual nann bread, onion barhji was gooey and uncooked in the centre. For £45 definitely not worth the price, ended up leaving and ordering a curry from local Indian for half the price and double the food. Wouldn’t recommend

I had a roast here on Sunday. The food was good as were the beers. The staff, however, were very rude. The waitress tried to take our order within 30 seconds of sitting down, and every time she came back to take our order and we said we weren't ready, she looked visibly annoyed and rolled her eyes! When the food arrived, the same waitress tried to take my plate away whilst I was clearly still eating. This same waitress took turns with another waitress to keep approaching me to take my plate whilst I was clearly eating. We were an hour into our booking and there was no rush in the restaurant so it just felt like we were being made to leave. After this crappy service, despite the tasty meal, I do not feel welcome back to this establishment

Haven't been in this pub for a while but popped in with a friend couple of weeks ago for a drink and thought the food smelt good. So returned last night with partner and oh my oh my, it was sublime. We had some dhal and paneer dishes with pilau rice and everything was cooked to perfection, spicy but not overly hot which is good for me as I don't like too much chilli and heat. Great range of beers and some lovely staff as well. Well worth a visit.

We visited the Jolly Butchers on a Sunday afternoon for a quick drink. This isn’t a review of the food, though the roast did look good. I hadn’t been to this pub in about 10 years, and like the area, it has changed quite a bit - certainly more polished. The beer selection is large, but the barman was pretty reluctant to let us try anything. In fact, he wasn’t particularly welcoming and didn’t say much at all - even thanks when we paid. I always find it odd when there's such a wide selection of beers but little willingness to offer samples. Another server asked if we had booked a table, but we explained we just wanted a drink and asked if we could sit in the area clearly designated for drinks only, which seemed to confuse them. It feels like the pub has gradually morphed into more of a restaurant, perhaps due to lingering effects of COVID, with an emphasis on table service (and service charge). That said, the drinks were good, and the overall atmosphere was chilled. It's the kind of place you could visit alone, with a group, or with family. It’s nice, but when it comes to the overall pub experience (and it being welcoming), especially in an area with so many options, there are better places for just going for a few drinks.

The tandoori chicken of the Sunday roast menu was phenomenal. So much so it was gone before I thought to take a pic. I was practically licking the plate clean. And I don't usually go for chicken because it can be a bit bland but wow did they knock it out the park. Service was super friendly too. Even gave us some stuffing with the tandoori chicken which was very much appreciated.

There's always something interesting to drink. The food is delicious. I'm surprised that more pubs aren't doing Indian food. I've had the duck kathi roll a couple of times, which is probably my favorite. We ordered the ribs last time, which were well seasoned and fall off the bone. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with such a lush smell - a smokey, seasoned tandoori/ BBQ type smell. It made us even more excited for our Sunday roast. I was torn between regular half chicken, the pork loin or the tandoori chicken roast. In the end, after a chat with our waiter, I went for the tandoori chicken roast. He said it was the most popular choice, also I thought I might as well - it’s not the usual thing to have with a Sunday roast, might as well make the most of it. I did not regret it. Everything was great. Very tasty. It arrived quickly. The portion size was generous. We defo enjoyed our meal! My highlights were the chicken, the cauliflower cheese and the rich gravy. Even our Aperol spritzes were well made. The pub was spacious, high ceilings, gorgeous windows. A really nice space on the high street. The only thing that could’ve made it better was if the front door wasn’t left open, the cold breeze meant we ate with our jackets on. We’ll defo go back again, but in the summer!

I would to give this 4/5 stars as the food was amazing but my partner and I had an awful customer service experience with a young staff member at the bar. I will start by saying that every other member of staff in there was actually super nice. But unfortunately you are only as strong as your weakest link. We’ve all been there right, young and working a bar job or in retail. I always make a point of being super nice and patient with people in service or retail as I did it for a long time. I know it can be. But being this rude to someone is not called for, I don’t take it lightly. I ordered 1 of every dish on the menu (it was our work social) and there were more of us in our group than dishes on the menu (it turned out to be a great amount of food — which tasted great, the chefs nailed it). After seeing other people eating and the size of their dishes this seemed like a very appropriate thing to do. He made it seem like what I’d asked for was the most ridiculous thing he’d heard — The staff member quick blinked in shock and responded in such an incredibly rude manner. I also ordered probably too much bread and I asked it that was too much, he made some quick remark that if I’d read the menu properly that some dishes come with bread. The way he did it was so rude. After a super awkward and slightly tense exchange we reduced it, I was honestly gob smacked. That’s your job! To help customers with their orders and questions! Why be so rude! I’ve never eaten here before, I don’t know how big your portions are, that why I asked. I then paid, and he almost snatched the card machine from my hand. As I said, the other staff were great. The food was great. But if this guy worked for me and it was negatively impacting customers then it would be a pretty clear choice of what to do about it. Unfortunately never going to go here again.

Not a pub, it's a restaurant with beer on tap. Waited at the bar for ages, was told they'd be with me in a minute (after 5), and then told it's table service only. Hard surfaces, and an open plan kitchen in the corner, make it extremely noisy and difficult to have conversations, resulting in everyone talking loudly which compounds the problem. Food was alright and came in a reasonable amount of time. Let down by waiters that couldn't hear / remember orders correctly, and making loads of little mistakes.

Have been in here before and has been ok but went in with my partner this afternoon and was about to sit at a seemingly unreserved table. A young man literally ran over and asked if we had booked rather brusquely. We said no but explained we were only having one quick drink (there were several empty tables without any reserved signs) but this did not elicit any response and he just kept his head down looking at his list without communicating. I then pointed to an empty table and asked if we could sit there. "No" was the terse response. He carried on looking at list - no attempt at 'sorry but we are really busy etc etc" or anything approaching decent customer service. Eventually tiring of seeing the top of his head looking at his list we just left. Really poor service. If you have bookings and are full then fine, but just be polite about it!

My mate and I were down from Birmingham for one night only. The pub was deservedly busy at 5pm on Saturday 04.10.23, but we'd booked a table. Both of us had the chicken curry & naan at £11.50. It was VERY tasty without too much heat. The sauce was superb and we were glad spoons were provided. We both had a few pints of some crackin' real ales. This was a great place for food and ale before going over the road to the Three Crowns for a gig at The Waiting Room below. MALKA was totally brillinat btw. Note for management: 'reserved' signs on tables could do with being removed asap after people leave. I saw a few people pop in and leave after thinking there was nowhere to sit.

Booked for a birthday meal on a Sunday at 6.30. Can’t comment on the food as the veg roast and chicken roast option had sold out and couldn’t order from the Indian food menu too so we decided to leave. Suggestion to make it up to anyone who wanted the veg roast option was to ‘give them some more potatoes and veg instead’ was patronising along with the suggestion of booking at an earlier time next time. No one came to take our order until we reminded them, not bothered about our custom so we left and went to celebrate at a restaurant that valued our custom. Not so jolly.

The Rochester Castle 🚇 Rectory Road 🍺 £2.75 Carlsberg ❤️ It’s not very often I review a Wetherspoons pub due to the impact they can have on local independent boozers. However, when I see a pub, my inquisitive nature always urges me to have a nose about and see what is going on inside and this one didn’t disappoint. . So what’s this pub all about? Well, in a word, community. This is a real locals pub with regulars that have drunk in here for years. Stoke Newington has a dwindling Irish community but they are well represented here through the different generations. There were a few old boys sat around one table all holding news papers checking out the form and deciding which horse was going to cover an afternoons drinking. There was also another table who were having the craic and seemingly winding up one fella who told his friends to “Feck off” and called one fella a “hooers melt” which can go either way depending on your friendship, luckily the peace was maintained. In another part of the pub there was a big group perched around a poser table trying to figure out why Arsenal are so shite at the moment. There was a great sense of community spirit here. . I’m second generation Irish who was brought up in pubs across London and Ireland, so this place really resonated with me and brought back some great memories of growing up. The regulars drink in here predominantly because they have always drunk in here with their friends and family regardless of what the name is above the door. My favourite fish and chip shop! Delicious cod and chips. Wonderfully crispy batter and good quality chips with crispy bits. I love this place both for eating in and takeaway and I happily travel more than half an hour to go there rather than closer places. Much less expensive than my trendy local fish and chip shop. I couldn’t reccomend more!

Had an awful experience some Sundays ago, waiter Ben wasn't V accommodating with my pram and when the table next to me stood up for me he told them to mind their own business and shutup? Bit of a lunatic. Also messaged management about it and got no response...the cheek
