The Italian Restaurant in Craven

I went to Matteo's about 2 months ago and every day without fail since I've thought about how INCREDIBLE the food was, in particular the best garlic bread I've ever had in my life (the garlic bread other garlic breads wish they were to be honest), the garlic dough balls with the mound of homemade garlic butter while the dough balls are still steaming from the oven and the baked cannelloni that has ruined all other cannelloni for me. Matteo is clearly so passionate about cooking and making the experience eating there the best he can, running the place with a small effortlessly friendly team and taking the time to check in. His hard work has paid off, its incredible! It's a very small place which would usually put me off but it feels cosy and warm, I live in Scotland and genuinely I'm trying to plan another trip down to Yorkshire so my family can experience the absolute magic that is this restaurant and see how pretty Settle and the surrounding area is. The only bad thing about Matteo's is that I'll never be able to enjoy Italian food the same (and I suppose also that it's not close enough for me to visit weekly but that's my fault). Hands down one of the best meals of my life! (And one more time, THAT BAKED CANNELLONI. Wow.)

My pizza was the worst I have ever experienced in an Italian restaurant. Two of our party had upset stomachs the next day

This place is amazing. The chef/owner and waitress were so lovely and attentive. The food was unreal and such a cute little restaurant!! Couldn’t recommend more!

Ate here on our last night in Settle. A unique and memorable experience in an intimate subterranean space. The food was superb; of particular note for our group was the starter gamberoni (four super large prawns), the cannelloni, the pizzas and the tiramisu. All food freshly prepared by one man in a very small kitchen, and delivered by an equally friendly server. Couldn’t fault it, and as above, it was a memorable evening and just sorry not here to go again this evening. A must!

Very disappointing. Berated by the owner on arrival after a genuine mix up about the booking. Didn't feel like we could say anything while we were there as he announced it to the entire restaurant trying to make a laughing stock of us. Long wait between courses which we wouldn't mind if it was worth the wait but sadly not! Tasteless watery food (Carbonara pasta). No salt, pepper and cutlery on tables when our mains arrived. £8.35 for 4 prawns and half a piece of bread. The waitress was the only positive from our experience. Before there's any comments on why we didn't say anything when we were there. We are far too polite and had already been embarrassed.

Absolutamente encantador pequeño restaurante italiano. Originalmente reservamos para las 8 pm pero llamamos a las 5 : 30 pm para ver si podían encajarnos antes, lo que hicieron. El propietario Matteo y su camarera son tan amables y acogedores. Es un lugar tan peculiar y lleno de encanto, pero lo más importante es que la comida era deliciosa. Sin duda lo volveremos a visitar y lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

Quirky little restaurant, managed to squeeze us in. Despite the late booking we didn't feel rushed and the food was immaculate! Well worth a visit if you are in settle.

My wife and two teenagers went to Rome last year and ate all over the city. This was so much better! My wife and I had Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni with Bolognese sauce, it was genuinely the best we've ever had. The depth of flavour on the dish was incredible, the ratio of cheese and spinach, bang on, we just could not fault it - Perfect. The Garlic Ciabatta was unanimously voted the best any of the others had eaten. Service was slow-ish but we knew this beforehand as the owner advised (he was fabulous, very passionate and entertaining) also wearing every hat - serving food and drinks, cooking and taking the money. It is a crypt like space which is intimate and warm. I would have taken a picture of my food but I was too excited and prioritised feeding my face with this amazing gift. - Thank you so much

What a little Gem! Matteo was so helpful with Fitting us in last minute as travelling up late. Food was amazing.. everything from fresh and the proper Italian way! It had a chilled out vibe and was happy to enjoy drinks and wait for food. The beauty of it was it was just Matteo doing it all... The greeting, waiting, serving and cooking! A true one man band and such a lovely guy! Thank you :)

A quirky place with an equally quirky chef, waiter, general everyman which is fabulous. Friendly and the food is first class. It's different as it's literally run by one man you might have to wait for your drinks, but get it's the whole experience and we really enjoyed eating and chatting to our host. Not to be missed.

A great find during a short stay in Settle. A big choice of authentic Italian dishes all cooked and served by Matteo. I believe he is getting waiting help shortly which he deserves! Nice ambience too with a vaulted stone ceiling

Durante una semana de estancia en Settle pedimos pizza para llevar para dos - absolutamente delicioso, probablemente el mejor que hemos tenido en mucho tiempo. De hecho nos quedamos tan impresionados que pedimos un par de cenas para llevar dos noches después y no nos decepcionó... comida fabulosa, buen precio y el hombre en sí es un genio.

Matteo is a magician,how he runs this business single handedly is awesome!.. fabulous atmosphere, fabulous food and all at a reasonable price too! Will definitely return and highly recommend 🥰

Our second time at Matteo’s, we actually traveled from Manchester just to eat here again last night. Everything is made fresh, he’s a one man band with heaps of passion and enthusiasm for his food and customers. He makes time to chat and entertain you! Even though he literally does it all, serves, cooks and cleans. With it being such a friendly, intimate environment. we got talking to another three of the tables last night and Matteo joined us for a drink at the end of the evening. We all laughed and shared stories, it certainly leaves you feeling a sense of “home”. The food is always delicious, piping hot and fresh. Matteo what a diamond you are!

We tried this place on holiday and it was absolutely fantastic. Delicious home cooked food and a very warm welcome.

Nice enough atmosphere but ….We arrived at 8 and got our main course at 10. Matteo obviously has issues running this place - mainly the fact he has no staff so does everything himself. This is hopeless with the 22 diners who were in that night sitting around waiting, and waiting…. He may be a nice enough guy but this way of running a restaurant is unacceptable. So be aware of the long wait. As for the food it was ok but no better than that.

Matteo was an excellent host, who acted as greeter, waiter and chef - without any assistance. The food was excellent and we will certainly return for a further visit if we visit the area for a further holiday. We would whole heartedly recommend a visit, but if you book a table and subsequently cannot make it please do let Matteo know so that he can offer the table to someone else, as he was badly let down by a table of ten when we visited. You will not be disappointed by a visit to Matteo's restaurant. Lovely last experience of our holiday and he makes you feel incredibly welcomed.

Matteo was an amazing host, really is a just him working there. Be prepared to wait longer than conventional restaurants but the food was amazing. Only down side was it was very hot in the restaurant because it’s so small.

Pizzas & pasta were amazing, add to that some extra special white wine we were recommended by the incredibly accommodating chef Matteo, we ended up spending £100 on 3 x 2 courses (dinner & dessert) + 2 bottles of white wine and some soft drinks - the best meal of our 7 day stay without any shadow of a doubt, Thanks again to the chef 5*

An absolute gem! We stumbled on this amazing place and couldn’t have found any better! Matteo squeezed us in at short notice and was the perfect host. He is a one man wonder. Attentive, witty and calmness personified. This place is a true one man band. He is front of house, bar, and cook as well as clearing. This was the highlight of our trip to settle! Our food was delicious, rustic, proper Italian food. Honestly couldn’t ask for anything better from one person in a wonderful little hidden gem of a restaurant. Don’t expect fast food. This is quality food for that comes in good time. Next time we are that way, this will be our first and only place to go to eat. Enjoy!! My son and I always look forward to our visits to Matteo’s spot. Ever since we discovered it several years ago, we’ve come back every year to be treated to Matteo’s cuisine and his character. This year, my son chose a pizza and I plumped for cannelloni. Matteo is a one man band, so he has to juggle taking orders, cooking them and serving, all while engaging with his customers. I don’t know how he does it. This night he had a table of 16 to manage and whilst he was clearly rushed off his feet, still found time to make sure we were looked after. As for the meals, you can always rely on good quality, well cooked food.

We turned up on a busy Saturday evening without a booking. Matteo wasn't able to accommodate us immediately but gave us some suggestions to try, but told us to come back later if no luck, which we ended up doing. And so glad we did! Wonderful food and service, Matteo worked so hard, and the food was excellent. Couldn't recommend this place enough, I will definitely be back. Thanks for a brilliant evening

I didn't feel well next day. Food tasted nice though. Menu offered large or regular pizza but I was not offered a choice when ordering. Received and charged for large. Felt a bit cheated. When we raised matter, we were quite rudely dismissed.

Honestly some of the best Italian food we’ve eaten outside Venice and Rome! Matteo is an absolute work horse - front of house, waiter and superstar chef rolled into one package. We decided to go for chef’s recommendations for the wine and food and he really did not disappoint! Our starters were the queen or scallops and aubergine parmigiana. Both sublime - the scallops cooked superbly and the aubergine the best we’ve ever tasted (and we’ve eaten it a lot!). The mains were the Pork special and the meatballs - both delectable and perfect. Pork chops have to be cooked just right - and these weee succulent, juicy and very very tasty! The meatballs - oh wow! If we’d have thought about it we would have taken several portions home to freeze! The service is slow and you do have to wait - but it is so very worth it. We’ve eaten in small Italian restaurants in Rome and it’s very reminiscent of that - with time between courses to drink and talk rather than the rush to get everything out super speed! The place itself is in an old cellar full of character and ambience - it only has 8 tables and not space for many people so it’s very romantic and intimate. Absolute gem and will be a firm re-visit the next time we go to Settle! Great job Matteo - 2 very happy customers! Chris & Jo

Hard to find a harder working chap than Matteo. No wonder he has recently gone on a new food regime to build himself up. A one man cooking band in an atmospheric old wine cellar with arched low ceiling. One of those good value does what it says on the tin places. Just good solid nosh at reasonable prices. A nice fresh bready base on my pizza with generous topping and a bottle of local craft ale and a nice salad. Expect some substitutes on the food, but he will tell you what he's doing. There's some good veggies on the pizza, not just tomato onion mushrooms and peppers here. Watching him work is a poetry in motion as he multi tasks his way through multiple orders on his own. Serves drink and food, prepares food, chats to customers, clears tables. He makes a day off feel great!

What an experience! Matteo is a one man band. Everything about our evening was wonderful. Matteos welcome, the food, Italian Prosecco and atmosphere. We will definitely return upon our next weekend in Settle. Thank you Matteo.

This is a singularly unique place to eat. Very popular. It's a undervault which gives it a cozy atmosphere. The owner does everything from greating you, taking your coat, cooking, taking your order, serving your meal, taking payment, washing up... everything. He's of a individual character and charming in an engaging way. Considering he is the sole employee everything went well the night we were there, managing 18 covers in hour or so. The food. I had pizza but whilst good value and topping which was excellent the base was more like focaccia than pizza. It's a matter of preference but it was too heavy for me. My wife had callelloni which was very good. Drinks were maybe a bit limited but not in a way that's an issue. Good value overall. Food lacks a little refinement possibly but if you like half inch pizza bases it could be a full five stars. Please give it a try there is a lot of good things about Matteo's.

Called for takeaway pizza. Chef looked very stressed in a cramped kitchen with equipment all over the place. He begrudgingly said he could make us two pizzas. We did notice his fingernails were black - a worrying start! The pizza bases were very thick and soggy. Toppings were average and minimal. Honestly would not return as poor value for money - go to Booth’s round the corner and buy a pizza! Perhaps this restaurant needs a revamp and more staff to make it welcoming

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our evening here. The food was great with huge portions and ingredients sourced from Italy. Really friendly head chef who provided great service. Very pleased we ended our trip to Settle with this meal!

Come here with friends at least once a year from Scotland. Food is amazing, host is amazing. Menu is great, must try another dish this time, but I love the lasagna!!

STAY AWAY FOLKS! …… if your going to turn up 11 minutes late! As we walked in we met a very obnoxious and rude chef/front of house who quite aggressively stated ‘we were late’. I have never in all my years dining out have come across this shocking behaviour. (Truth be told we were actually 4 mins early based on the original booking) The very small man is obviously up to his eyes balls in very small man syndrome. An absolute embarrassment to himself and the business! Really glad they didn’t take any of our money!

We visited Matteos as a group of 5 including 1 vegetarian and were blown away by the quality of the food and great service. We had garlic breads to start followed by a selection of pastas and pizza and a couple of bottles of wine.Everything was excellent,I cannot recommend Matteos highly enough.

Great food in a setting full of character. Had the veggie lasagne - genuinely couldn’t tell it was veggie - tastiest one I’ve ever had. Note that Matteo runs this place himself so if you are looking for waiters running around grinding black pepper on demand, it’s not going to happen. If you’re not in a rush it’s great.

The chap running the restaurant is extremely hard working . Unfortunately it needs more hands on deck as the service suffers because not only is the man in charge the chef , he is also the only waiter in the restaurant. The food is spectacular but unfortunately let down by the slow service . It needs a waitress to take the orders and serve the drinks so he can focus on cooking

Fantastic afternoon at Matteos! Great communication before booking, I am gluten free and nothing was a problem, matteo could adjust the menu to suit me, when we arrived, we were welcomed with a smile, matteo was the only person working that day and there were 10 of us to look after! What an amazing job he did, attentive, attention to detail and the food was absolutely lovely! We will certainly be returning, it is so nice to be able to find a restaurant that takes your intolerances into consideration And still produce absolutely gorgeous food! Thank you so much, you made my birthday really special thankyou!! A definite visit if your travelling to settle! Beautiful food !!!

Quite a unique place, haven't been anywhere quite like it. I'd say the food is similar to good home cooking. The serving/cooking is all done by one person, it wasn't too busy when we were there but can imagine you may have to wait longer at busier times. Food very tasty, fresh and a good price. Intimate setting with not many tables

I spend a fair amount of time in restaurants and they can often be easily forgettable. Not Rosa and Matteos though. As soon as we arrived Matteo made us feel so welcome and he was happy for us to have our dog with us. The food was really very tasty made with fresh herbs and products and was bursting with flavours, we had meatballs, meat lasagne and vegan lasagne ( which he prepared earlier in case I may want it, as I told him at booking I was vegan) Matteo remembered our drinks just as we all liked them and kept them coming when we asked. The ambience was great authentic and cosy. We are all local and will be back again and again.

First time here, but would go again. Matteo is everything, chef, waiter and barman. His work ethic and attitude are worth visiting the restaurant for in themselves. However, the food is excellent. Traditional Italian food cooked from scratch with passion. Thanks for great meal Matteo.

Visited New Years Day , very grateful to be able to walk in as we had no booking. We also were delighted to be able to bring our dog Tyson. Was a small restaurant but quite busy . We were offered free Prosecco on arrival, a lovely touch . Our host was chef ,Barman ,waiter and pot washer all in one . How he pulled it off is remarkable!

Had an amazing home cooked Italian meal at this lovely Italian restaurant with great service. Full of character and proper cooked from scratch pasta dishes. Would highly recommend to anyone who prefers proper food to chain restaurant food. The wine was also very good and everything was very reasonably priced. Thanks for booking us in at short notice and for chatting to us at the end of the night.... we'll be back!

Booked it for me and my wife on Saturday night for my 50th birthday weekend. The restaurant was quiet but so was the rest of Settle. Metteo was very welcoming and the place was cosy. We had olives and Garlic prawns for starters, very nice. Mains. I had meat balls and pasta, missus had Matteos cannelloni. Both lovely :) Big portions so we didn't manage to eat it all. Will visit again next time we visit again.

Thought we’d try a new place in Settle due to good reviews. I made my family go back up the stairs after coming down them as I thought this cannot be the entrance and it must be the kitchen (photo) this was all piled up outside the door to the restaurant. Greeted rather rudely and sat down in the corner where the table was wet. The walls were sweating and had black mold all up them. Should’ve just left straight away. The only thing the chef got right was the tomato garlic bread. Pasta was undercooked, carbonara was disgusting, prawns were anaemic and sent back with no apology & even I can’t get a lasagne wrong. The “chef” lets say lacked in hygiene and was just all round unprofessional. As we left we got a good look at the kitchen and it was filthy.🤮 £90 we paid for food I wouldn’t even feed to my dog. Will not be returning. The place needs closing down.

Dropped in with friends on a night out in Settle. It's a tiny little place with a relaxed atmosphere. Service was slow but the food was great and we enjoyed our time there. Highly recommended. The chef is also the waiter, barman and bottle washer. He cares about what he does and you can tell, the food is delicious.

I have never been to such a terrible restaurant and am very surprised it is still allowed to operate. The chef/owner was totally alone to do everything. His clothing and finger nails were dirty. I could see the kitchen area from where I sat and he did not have any disposable gloves on while picking up different foods. Also he kept coughing into his sleeve including in front of diners.

This place is definitely a one of a kind. We came here during our visit to settle, and this place alone will certainly make us come back to the town centre. It's among the best Italian food we've had (which is a lot). The king prawns starter had us shutting our eyes to savour it, because it were absolutely divine. The carbona that I had was faultless, the sauce was a little runnier than I'm used to, but it was still thick enough and very tasty. My partner's meatballs were devoured very quickly - the were amazing too, especially the sauce. The pasta on both dishes was cooked perfectly. Lovely fresh bread served with the starter and a main. The only small thing we have to say is that the meatballs were quite salty, however the very nice sauce made the salt a nice level. The thing I find the most amazing, is that it was one man doing everything on his own - literally. The cooking, the waiting, the phone, everything. Kudos to him!! I'm absolutely amazed, and he was very friendly and on the ball with everything. Very inspiring. The atmosphere was very genuine Italian. It was in a stone basement style room, very intimate. Very unique. Proper Italian music and lovely warm lighting, it was very relaxing. I can't wait to visit again.

This is a little gem ,the food is delicious and really reasonably priced. The chef works so hard cooking to order and serving with a really warm smile .We come to this restaurant as often as possible as we live over a 100 miles away,and it's worth the journey .Fabulous.

Three of us had a really great meal here and I would certainly try to come back again. The place is small and filled up quite early for a midweek evening.

I was impressed from the moment I phoned the restaurant! I asked if me and 6 others could book in that night, after we had walked the Yorkshire 3 peaks, Matteo couldn’t of being more accommodating telling us to take our time and he will stay open until we got there! When we got there we were met by Matteo who was so lovely and couldn’t do enough for us as well as serving other tables, fetching our drinks and cooking our food! The food was absolutely delicious and if we are ever back in the area we will definitely be back! Thank you Matteo & good luck with your walk! ☺️

We arrived as a walk-in at this little gem in the middle of Settle. We were greeted by Matteo and his one staff member who between them worked magic to feed and water a packed restaurant with aplomb. The setting was a small cellar, where you walk through the kitchen to the dining space. The food was authentic rustic Italian, inspired by Matteo’s parents and grandparents and was outstanding. We are only visitors to the area but we will be back. Could not recommend too highly.

We had a fantastic meal, there was one man running the whole show, the place was packed from the beginning, we were late for our booking, and were still welcomed and accommodated by the host. We had a wait on food and drinks, but this was to be expected seeing as the host was doing every job in the restaurant, however, the food didn't disappoint! It was beautiful and we all enjoyed our meals. The only bad thing is we don't live closer, as we would like to go every weekend 😁 excellent little hidden gem. Thank you

Arrived in a group of 7 without pre-booking but Matteo quickly moved tables around to accommodate us. I'm so glad we choose this place because the food was amazing. Pizza, pasta and chicken dishes were extraordinary and Matteo was a great host. We will be back.

I’m a local and having read the good reviews we were looking forward to a nice meal. I ordered a Lasagne but sadly it was the worst thing I had ever tasted - it was incredibly strong to the point that I’m sure it was off, the other person I was with tasted it too and thought the same and it smelled so bad I had to ask the waitress to take it away. As we left another couple were paying in front of us and we had a good look at the kitchen which to be honest looked less than hygienic with tubs of food on the floor. I don’t like giving bad reviews and from the ones I read it looks like the Pizza may be ok - but I’m afraid what I saw and tasted has put me off for life and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Amazing food. We had garlic mushrooms and a garlic bread for starter which were delicious. My husband had the steak and I had the house chicken. Really nicely cooked and presented. Lovely little restaurant. Love the stone walls and intimate feel of the place. Matteo and the waitress were really attentive and on hand if we needed anything. Can’t fault anything. Thank you for a lovely evening and we will be back soon.

Very slow service as the owner/chef/waiter (yep he does everything!) takes everyone's drinks order, then everyone's food order. We didn't order starters so had to wait whilst everyone ate their starters. Portion size was really good but the base was think, and the taste of pizza not that great. Matteo and his other waiters were very friendly so can't fault that. Finally, it is a very tiny place and cramped with tables so it you get claustrophobic then pls avoid.

He remembered when we arrived and made sure we had the extensive gluten free menu. Food was excellent and even made alterations to the menu for my girlfriend as one of the sauces wasn’t available. Would recommend to anyone in the area.

Tiny little restaurant with maybe 20 covers. Food cooked to order and all arrived on time. Matteo was running on his own, if you’re tall mind your head ! Food tasty and good sized portions.

We nipped in at 6pm the off chance there would be a table free in the evening (8pm) and we were told that there was but there would be a wait because it was busy. Not a problem we were in no rush. Arrived at 8pm and I can honestly say it’s the most unique dining experience I have ever had. The whole restaurant was run by one man who was so attentive to all the guests. Every table was full and he made sure we all knew that things would take a while but was apologetic throughout. The drinks were kept flowing as he prepared and served the food. How this guy has the energy to keep this up night after night and still have a smile on his face is beyond me but he did it so well! The food did take a while but was so so worth it. We had a pizza to share, Garlic mushrooms and antipasti for one (there was two of us) and it was far more than we could eat but it was all so delicious! Not a place to go for a quick bite to eat but definitely a place to visit if you’ve got an evening to spare on Settle.

First time at this place for me and my two children. Called first to make sure there was space for us as it was getting close to closing time, he politely reassured me he would be able to accommodate us. First things first - THIS CHEF / OWNER CAN COOK !! The BEST pizza I’ve ever tried, my children want to go back tomorrow already (they are very fussy and I’ve ate at so many restaurants world wide). Second - The owner was on his own - HE WORKS SO HARD !!! His helper was on holiday… he couldn’t do enough to help, he worked over time to serve us and the table next time us, he even made time to talk to customers and we all had such a laugh!! SO FRIENDLY ! He’s a top business owner doing his best. I couldn’t ask for anymore. Fresh / quality ingredients, very tasty and pizza bases all home made, warm plates. I know how hard it is running a small business in todays times as I have one. I’ve just read through the 1 star reviews and am so disappointed by some peoples LACK OF UNDERSTANDING - some people expect 100% every day and it’s just not able when your running a business on your own… a little kindness goes along way, why not politely say there is a problem when your there - instead of going home and being a keyboard warrior! Wine was nice - I left it to his choice. I watched him cook for 20 minutes, he prepared fresh home made everything and we talked about our struggles of reaching VAT 85,000, card fees stealing our profits, government not raising VAT threshold since 2017 , suffocating small businesses. He said 3 local small businesses have just closed locally. If you want to see lovely small businesses like this around towns - visit them - support them - understand them and be patient- we are just humans working hard to serve. Unless you would think green king, Mc Donald’s, subway and papa johns or BIG VAT registered restaurants. Keep up the great work Matteo 💪🏼 probably see you tomorrow! 😋

Just back from a lovely meal. Excellent food. The owner cooks, waits on and does everything but manages to tto serve super Italian meals. How he dies it I do not know. A relaxed pace. Take your time and enjoy.
