The Hayhurst Arms in Cheshire West and Chester

Great food. Good service. Multiple different families with kids playing ipads or phones with volume on. Kind of ruined the meal and experience. I understand that its not the restaurant's fault that lazy parents now parent via iPads and phonrs instead of interacting with their own children. Really ruins the experience of eating at the Hayhurst for me so I probably will not visit again. I don't understand why restaurant's don't introduce a policy of keeping electronic devices personal, with the volume off to prevent the assault on the senses when you are trying to relax and talk during a meal. Expensive way to guarantee a headache.

My first visit as recommended by good friend. Lovely food and beautiful surroundings. I'll be returning soon to treat my Mum for her birthday.

Excellent quality ingredients. This is not your average "pub grub"; don't expect huge portions. Meals are quality rather than quantity. Staff are efficient and friendly. A regular for all my family.

Ben was an incredible waiter. He made me and my family laugh a lot and made my birthday meal so special. Amazing food and atmosphere as usual!

Went for a late lunch with hubby today to a bustling pub with a real fire burning. Had the cheese and onion pie and honestly it's the best I've ever tasted. Staff are so brilliant and the place has a real happy vibe about it. We will defo be back

Edit: 04/10/24 - The sweet chilli is still a good meal, very tasty without being overbearing. This was supplemented by a very nice 6% lager beer,. Not cheap at £6.50/pint, but very refreshing all the same. Still one of my favourite local places to grab some good food/drink and have a catch-up at the end of the week. The sweet chilli beef salad was spot on, as were the fries. The garlic bread with cheese was more cheese-on-toast as the garlic was noticeable by its absence. The bitter was very good, a nice smooth pint. 👍 Service was helpful, friendly and attentive. It was quite busy for a sunday evening so they must be doing something right. Definitely worth a visit. 😁

Only go because it’s our friends’ local place. Been at least a half a dozen times. Always disappointed in choices, quality and quantity, never mind the food being extremely overpriced. Fish and chips were OK but too expensive. Was served cold raviolis on a cold evening. And the steak was tough as leather. Not again.

My friend and I recently had a lovely dinner at the Heyhurst Arms. The evening started well with plenty of space to park. We got inside and went to the bar to check in for dinner. We were about 15 minutes early but were shown straight to our table. The staff were attentive and friendly, but not instusive. The next challenge was how to decide what to have, we were spoiled for choice. Both of us could have eaten almost anything from this really broad menu. There's something for everyone here! The food was really delicious, and just as you would expect (or hope) from this elavated pub grub menu. The highlight of the evening for us, however, was the fantastic service we received, particularly from our main waitress, who was really knowledgeable about the wines, discussed lots of things with us about the food, and generally was super friendly, professinal and welcoming. We will definitely be back.

First time for me. Lovely pub and dog friendly. Varied menu and prices as expected. One less star for size of coffee cup. Needs to be bigger! Lovely waitress Ellie B, thank you. Would return to maybe try a Sunday lunch. Update Aug 24 - been tonight and I just find the menu expensive for what you get. Salty fries that resemble maccies plus a small burger nearly £17. Tasty but didn't knock my socks off. Don't think we'll call again at these prices/portions/quality 😢

We were disappointed with our last visit! Bread roll was hard as stone,various other items were over cooked and inedible due to over cooking ,reported this to our server and didn’t get a response! Wrote to explain our situation disappointment,I did write to the company and didn’t get a response so we won’t return! We were regular visitors and have some discount vouchers if anyone wants these let me know!👎👎

Great atmosphere. Loved the food which was exceptional for us. We recommend the crispy beef salad which was particularly tasty and the sticky toffee pudding was just the best. Worth the travel. Australia needs this place🥰

When the only suggestion is "how about a blue cheese sauce (as an alternative to the excellent peppercorn sauce) to accompany the excellent rump steaks", you now that your favourite restaurant on the Northeast side of Winsford has cracked it! Repeated happy customers (along with Fox&Hounds to the southeast and The Plough out to the West of Winsford. We are spoilt for choice! This builds upon out previous (very happy) review four years ago in 2019: Several recent visits. Always great food, drink and service. We shall be back again (and again!) Updated (again!) 27AUG2024: continued excellence across effectively monthly visits throughout 2024 so far.

Always a pleasure to come back to the Hayhurst Arms, dog friendly for our pooch Penny, and the staff are super. Sunday dinner was delicious, both the lamb & mix roast dinner was a hit with our party! Thank you for being patient and dealing with allergies in a professional manner. We managed to squeeze in a dessert too - highly recommend the passionfruit cheesecake, super light & fluffy! We'll be back soon!

The service we received was amazing. Lucy offered an alternative when we weren’t sure of the accompanyments. She was attentive, polite and showed GENUINE interest in why we dining. She is a credit to the Hayhurst restaurant.

Didnt eat but food that was being served looked really good and not to expensive, unlike the drinks 2 pints of shandy £11.60 .even with that price for drinks its worth a visit its a beautiful pub and staff are friendly and welcoming

A nice Cheshire country pub , spacious inside with well laid out seating so not to close to other diners. Good food and beer.

We waited for 2 hours for main courses to be served. No starters . So disappointed,just feel they are just trying to get heads in but not looking after the people, staff looked overwhelmed . Will not be returning anytime soon .

Went for a Sunday lunch. When looking at the prices I noted that it’s more expensive than other pubs. It has a nice atmosphere so at over £20 for a beef roast dinner I hoped it would be good. My partner ordered roast beef and pork belly which was over £21. My roast beef Sunday lunch came and there was 3 inches of bare plate all the way around. It was stacked so I dismantled it to find that there were 3 small roast potatoes and a small amount of shredded dark green cabbage. A small roasted carrot and…2 mange tout.. these belong on a stir fry in my opinion. Also some carrot shavings which I would have on a salad, not a roast dinner. The 2 slices of beef were a decent size and flavour and the single Yorkshire pudding was nice. But.. I was still hungry after eating this. I have never been hungry after eating a whole roast dinner! my partners was the same but only had 1 piece of beef and then 1 tiny stick of pork. We are very disappointed with the portion size, we will not be eating here again. I feel ripped off as we went to another pub and ordered starters and dessert as we were still starving. For the record we are both slim and are not big eaters. But for the price they should consider doing a decent portion or drop their prices. I do not recommend going here for food. You will feel unsatisfied.

Lovely food. Service was very friendly and quick. Staff were happy to accommodate allergens in the group and were attentive to the small details. Busy Friday lunch in a pub, but the atmosphere was relaxed and not too loud.

Average food at overinflated prices with poor service. Very expensive for what you get. The food is basic and portion size small. I ordered the cheese pie, and they brought me fish and chips. My meal came out when everyone else had nearly finished. The pie was £17. All you got was a slice of pie, a few leaves of spinach and some gravy. Pretty disappointing. The pub is trying to be a cut above the rest but is falling short in my opinion. It's the first time I've been and the last. The staff were obviously overwhelmed and couldn't cope with the amount of people in. When they did attend the table they were great, just not enough of them.

Very dissapinted in the meals, we voiced our concerns but not sure if they were taken seriously. Probably won't choose this venue for any future eating out.

Disappointed. Called in for a birthday lunch with my husband. It seemed we were inconveniencing the person behind the bar as he asked if we had a reservation, which we did not. We asked if we could sit outside and were told no food was being served outside. Not true, as later he carried two meals to customers outside. We were sat at a table by the door next to a number of noisy people. The food was slow to arrive and mediocre, service was dreadful. Customer service training required.

Pork Sunday roast was delicious!

Very good. Unfortunately when we were last there the barmaid removed the sparkler from the beer and served us with a flat pint. Today it was superb. Well done.

Shockingly bad ! Had same menu in Formby but this awful. Redcurrant sauce with cheese pie ?? Really ?? Other branches serve a mustard sauce which is more compatible . Also it was rock hard ! Microwaved to death ! Husband had the brisket which was dry , just awful all of it !!

We hired the private dining room for my husband’s retirement & birthday meal. The staff were amazing and we were made to feel very welcome. The food was delicious and we got 5 star service. Thank you so much for helping us to make this a special and memorable event.

Lovely food, friendly service, good location.

We went on a sunny Saturday and sat outside. It's a lovely setting. We had the steak sandwich and the lamb flatbread. The steak sandwich was good. Lamb flatbtead was disappointing and, in my opinion, pricey for what you got. The lady that served us was very friendly and welcoming.

Love the Hayhurst Arms and always seem to end up having the crispy beef salad. Yesterday once again I had the crispy beef salad but the beef was tiny curled up dry little bits all stuck together with very little chilli sauce . Extremely disappointing.

Had a retirement party last nigh. Can not fault anything. Communication was excellent, food great, staff went above and beyond to make it a fantastic evening. Thank you.

Service was so slow and food was poor: We waited over an hour and a half for food to arrive, people who'd ordered their food after us were eating and finishing their meal before ours made it to the table. Food was overpriced for what we got. Reheated pie, cold in places and pastry was rock hard and stale. Had missing ingredients, so had to request them and wait longer, can with 3 tiny pathetic cold roast potatoes, the whole meal overall was luke-warm to cold. We were a pre-booked group of 10 and out of the 10 only 3 enjoyed the food. Would really not recommend this place at all, very very disappointed.

Usual great food and great service

Staff are always amazing here and the food is great. They cater very well for allergies also. Dog friendly which is always a plus, and if you do have a dog, I would recommend the dog walk on the first Sunday of each month.

The roast lamb dinner was amazing, I was told by other members of the family that the steak burger was delicious. The staff can't do enough for you. 10 out of 10.

Went tonight. Starters great, service great. Then down hill. 2 steak burgers burnt but burnt side down on both burgers. Then salmon linguine extremely salty. My husband couldn’t eat it. I love salty food so said I’d eat it so we swapped, but I couldn’t finish it as it was too salty for me too. We were hungry and on a timer as we had limited time so decided to just mention at the end of the meal as constructive criticism. We were meet by what we believe to be a shift manager or of that stature after mentioning it to the clearing staff just as a passing comment . The ‘manager’ came, telling us that’s how salmon tastes ,’salty’. We are in our 60’s extremely well travelled( we live in the UAE and the Uk) and dined and know how salmon should taste and how salt tastes. The attitude of this person has yet again meant we shall take a break from this pub unfortunately yet again down to staff attitude . Why does this place hire such people? All the other staff untill this point were lovely and couldn’t do enough. Oh well I’m sure we will find plenty of other places to spend our money!

Well….what can I say, we visit here most Sundays, so this is difficult to write, so here goes…. sometimes we have food here but mostly just drinks, today we decided to have some food and boy were we disappointed….place has really dropped off the edge of a cliff, service was terrible, the 2 kids on the bar were nothing shy of embarrassing, chap called (Tom) and a younger girl were just short of getting a room together, people around us complaining about there drinks not turning up while “Ken and Barbie” were flirting all over the bar together and clearly other staff were getting frustrated with them…..we ordered food and most of it was good, however the fish cake for nearly 14 quid was just one fish cake and garnished with cheap vegetables to make it look expensive, we got some burnt chips after we had eaten the meal, a chap from the management clearly seen we were not happy and kindly took the chips off the bill……I spoke to (Tom) at the bar and told him that’s it’s a shame to see the place go down hill….he asked why and I mentioned the service was poor, he replied with the table we sit on gets forgotten about, although it’s right next to the bar, and although we didn’t book a table and were in the bar…..we still pay the same price for food and drink as everybody else, so there is no reason to be treated differently…..we left shortly after this as Tom and the girl in the bar were clearly talking about us, which made us feel great, it was also nice that they were clearing up around us, obviously wanting to get finished, bin bags being swung around while we were eating was wonderful, this was at 7:15 so a long way away from there 10:30 closing time, Management were having a knock up meal in the back room and not arsed about the shambles going on around them. we paid the bill and cleared off, safe to say we probably won’t be going back anytime soon Awful shame as the brunning and price pubs are normally good…..they better get a grip on this place before it’s too late….

Where do I start. From walking in til leaving we were looked after wonderfully. Food, service, atmosphere, cosiness was lovely. Amelia our waitress was amazing. So lovely and polite. Nothing was too much trouble. She's a credit to ur establishment. Next time I'm back to see my friend Tracie, we'll be back guys. Thank you for a lovely evening xx

31/04/24 Have been a number of times now but we booked a table for Easter Sunday, well worth the journey. Food was brilliant, really tasty with really decent portion sizes. Again the staff continue to be lovely, professional and friendly. Highly recommended - make sure you book! *********************** 2023. Went for lunch with my family, first time here and wasn't disappointed. Welcomed by staff and shown to our prebooked table. Served by Ben who was very helpful and professionally sociable without being too attentive. Food was exceptionally good with everything on the menu available. Unfortunately I was the designated driver otherwise after our meal I would have happily stayed for an hour or two to sample the quite extensive choice of drinks they stock. We will be going back!

Great meal and very attentive staff

We usually visit here for food however on a recent visit found that prices had increased yet the experience was not great. We seemed to be forgotten about at our table as it took a long time to have our order taken and then have food delivered and it wasn't overly busy. We did not get what was ordered on one of the plates so there was a further delay and we had to ask for drinks more than once. If prices are increased the experience needs to match.

Every time we visit the food and service is amazing. Lovely friendly staff and never disappoints. We are a group of friends who meet every couple of months and we do try other places but we always come back to the lovely Hayhurst and always will.

Lovely dog friendly place. Very warm and cosy, thank to the very well lit fires. Food is excellent - more like a good restaurant than a pub. Don't expect your food to be pinged and on a plate within minutes - but so worth the wait. I'm coeliac and can very much recommend the chicken and ham pie or the fish and chips. Great to have gf food that doesn't come with the usual baked potato. Sunday roast is also phenomenal 😋

Lovely evening with delicious main course of Sicilian Fish Stew - served with ciabatta and aioli. Pudding was apple tart with vanilla ice cream - tasty but was more of a tarte tatin.

The Hayhurst Arms is a good bet for a decent pub meal. Friendly staff in a decent atmosphere. Not too busy on this visit (just after Xmas and new year). Nice, well cooked meal, I took up the challenge of finishing the fish and chips, whale on a plate! Will visit again.

Just had a meal in here. Food decent enough so no complaints there. The service however I would describe as shocking. Me and my wife were taking my 84 year old mother in law (recently had a stroke) who struggles walking and has to use a frame. When we arrived I asked who I presume the manageress who was manning the bar if we could sit near the door to make the walk easier back to the car (this is an eating area). We were told that they couldn’t serve us food in that area as they only had 3 staff working. Not sure why that matters. I tried explaining my reasoning for wanting to sit there but to no avail. We made our way to the restaurant area and had our meal. Towards the end of our meal we were shocked to see 2 tables of people sitting in the area we weren’t allowed to sit in all studying food menus. I was really riled by this and questioned the manageress who had some form of hissy fit. Never seen service as bad as this and she was extremely rude. No apology offered and i was accused of shouting (i wasnt) and she said the meal is on her (didnt want or expect a free meal) only an apology. The lady in question clearly needs training in how to show compassion. We definetly wont return. Gobsmacked
