This could so easily of been at least a 4 star review as the general appearance, condition and location of the place are great. Unfortunately the Bed linen stank like it had been left in a dusty cupboard for a year or 2 after having sweaty bodies sleep in it. Clean in appearance but dirty, dank and sweaty smelling nonetheless. Disappointing breakfast as nothing cooked on offer and the hotel owner needs to realize that a Continental breakfast is usually more than a bowl of rice crispys, toast and a cupcake. We were booked in for 2 nights but no amount of fabreze on the bed sheets could improve the smell and we checked out after the 1st night. Everything else was fine but in short the the 2 main and most important items of a hotel stay for many i.e your bed and breakfast were sadly extremely poor. We won't be back.

Very wecoming staff and not too busy. We took 2 'under 4s' and the alcove seating was ideal. Roomy and very clean throughout.Homemade cauliflower soup to start was very tasty. Could have done with a pepper mill but personal preference, I guess.Sunday lunch was perfect with giant yorkshires and plenty of veg, cooked to perfection.Highly recommended and will certainly return!

It was very quiet on our visit but I am sure if they keep up this high standard they won’t be short of covers It must be said that Herd & Herb has only recently opened so any review prior to July should be ignored as they are not a review of Herd & Herb. We called today ie Sunday 24/Feb for a two coarse Sunday lunch on a groupon deal& were very dissapointed. We used to come to the hardwick arms on a regular basis when the previous owners had it,but this was our first visit for a while. We both left most of the meal as it was inedible the beef was so tough you could not cut it in fact it did not seem like beef at all it could have been some old dead horse for all we knew.also the Yorkshire puddings was not recocognisable as such jus a soggy under cooked mess on the plate, the service was also slow & intermittent, stop & start.we complained to the waitress first & she said she would tell the chef , but nothing happened so then I told the young barman who also done nothing so this will be the last time we visit this place sadly.we thought the new owners would make the place better, but it is much worse from the food aspect.i don’t know how a so called chef could send out food like that.as also mentioned in a previous tweet the smell in both sets of toilets is disgusting you can smell them from the main bar where food is served,my wife said only one of the ladies toilets is working & stinking also.what a waste of a Sunday afternoon.we traveled 25 miles from Sunderland area for nothing.i hope the new owners read this & do something about the food/chef/&the stinking toilets.its a bad advertisement for a pub in a lovely country village.

I was in this pub drinking on Boxing Day with friends. I had a plastic glass from a previous pub with me which had the other establishments name on it however it was filled with alcohol I’d purchased on these premises and was empty when I brought it in. The so called manager barked at me that I could have it in there, I explained it was actually empty when I brought it in as I had finished the drink from the previous pub on the way over, and was filled with alcohol I had bought here, the bar man actually confirmed this to him yet this still wasn’t good enough. Never met someone so rude in all my life, Manager??? Please, he couldn’t even collect glasses without dropping them and smashing them. I decided to leave as he was so rude and asked for a plastic to take my drink, I was given a plastic with another pubs name on it from one of HIS members of staff, he then barked at me again saying I couldn’t drink out of it, yet I was given it from his staff? Utterly ridiculous. He looks like he can barely manage getting dressed never mind manage a pub. He needs some training in customer service, instead of barking at customers maybe sit and talk to them and explain you aren’t happy. If I had been spoken to in an acceptable manor and not shouted at in front of all my friends I wouldn’t have even found all of this an issue. Won’t be going back there anytime soon.

Hardwick Arms. The last time we visited here was January, before the new owners took over. We had bought a Groupon for a Steak meal and bottle of wine. On entering except for the scaffolding outside nothing seemed to have changed, standing waiting to be seated there was a nasty smell not sure what it was seemed worse near the toilet but they were clean. When we were given the menu we were surprised at how limited it was. We were told that side dishes were extra and we had to pay £1-50 each for French Fries. Our friends went for home cooked chips for £2-50 to be told they were frozen chips. The meal looked nothing like the picture on the Groupon advert.Would we go back no. We normally go six to eight times a year but due to other commitments we hadn’t been able to go since the new owners had taken over.

I am writing this review without ever having the pleasure of staying at this establishment !!! At the beginning of July I booked a single room for myself for this coming Saturday (18th August) so I would be able to attend Hardwick Live and not have to worry about getting home, I received a confirmation email from 'Rachel' which even stated which room number I was to stay in - number 9. Last night I decided to call at the hotel and ask for an early check-in and also to pay for my room in order to save time on Saturday, only to be told by a man on reception after about 10 minutes of confusion that I didn't have a room reserved at all, and there was in fact a person of another name booked into room 9 for 2 nights not 1! The man at reception called Rachel on her phone and she tried to fob me off with some excuse about there being an overbooking due to no fault of there's whatsoever and that as they operated on a first come - first serve basis, my booking had to be cancelled. My reaction was that this was in fact rubbish and because someone wanted to reserve for the 2 nights they took this as an opportunity to make more money, thus not honouring my booking. I did indeed point out that a friend of mine had booked 2-3 weeks after me and her room was still available for her. I was never informed of any cancellation prior to me actually calling at the hotel, which thank god I did, although Rachel insists she emailed, rang and texted me, all of these actions I have no record of !

I would highly recommend to stay clear from this place. We previously purchased a groupon voucher for 2 surf and turfs. It stated the choice was rump or sirloin and that if you wanted to you could upgrade to a filet for £2 extra. We were then told on arrival that they had no filet’s and had also ran out of sirloin leaving us no option but rump. Even though we had pre booked the table so they knew we were coming. We also ordered started which when came were just frozen starters you can buy at most supermarkets and with some salad that looked as wilted as their wallpaper. The place is in need of a refurb. The steaks on the other hand were just inedible!!!!! Tough as old boots and as you can see from the photo we did try to eat what we could but there was just nothing but fat. No-one came to check on us until the end when we then told the young waiter it was not very nice, he offered us desserts and we were told ‘dont worry i wont charge ya for em’ but we declined as if the starter and main were anything to go off id rather not. Wont be returning and will be spreading the message.

Myself and a friend went with a surf and turf Groupon voucher. We were a little apprehensive due to the mixed reviews. On arrival the exterior of the building was a bit of a let down, it needs a bit of tlc. Inside it is an old fashioned pub (which I find lovely). Some attention to fixtures and fittings may be in order. We sat in the conservatory. The young man that served us was polite and friendly. We bought a bottle of Gallo White Zinfandel which was £15.00. I had salt and pepper squid to start, my friend had scallops. The starters were lovely but there was more salad than fish. The surf and turf was rump steak with three prawns and garlic butter, mushrooms, salad and home made chips. The steak was a little tough but cooked the way I asked and the chips were lovely. The portion size was much better than the starter. For dessert I had a banoffee cream pie and my friend had lumpy bumpy cake. The desserts were nice. The restaurant was quiet and the staff were not intrusive. To finish we each had a coffee which was lovely. Excluding the wine the bill for starter, dessert and coffee came to £25.00 which was fine. I have spent more money for worse food and service in other places. If you go don't expect luxury as far as the building and decor goes but the food was very nice.

Had a Groupon for hardwick arms in sedgefield. Fine print states you have to book 48 hours before you go. We tried ringing to book but no one answers the phone. So we were left with no option but to just drive there. 16 mile trip to get there and there was one person in the whole place but he was in pub part. The restaurant was empty. We informed who we believe was the manager that we had a Groupon and he said we have to book 48hrs before. We informed him we tried but no one answers the phone. He said sorry but that's what you have to do. Even though the place was dead, not one person in the restaurant, he wouldn't let us dine. His attitude and customer care skills are zero! No wonder the place is empty if that's the way they go on with customers.Told family what happened and we've all cancelled our groupons. That's 5 they have lost. I find it bizarre that you have to book 2 days in advance to a pub that has no customers! I think we know why it's empty! Hmmm. Avoid like the plague!

Visited the Hardwick Arms Hotel Sedgefield for first time having purchased a Groupon voucher for Sunday Roast which cost £4 a head. Wasn't too sure what to expect at that price but was pleasantly surprised. The standard of food was fantastic. The food was piping hot and very tasty. Everything appeared fresh and there was a very good selection of vegetables. In fact we even had three different types of potato! As a party of five we had beef and pork. Both were delicious although no crackling. We also had deserts which were very good. For the standard of food alone I would be bordering on 5 stars particularly given the price. However, I've given 4 stars as the service could of been quicker and once finally served it would of been nice had the staff returned to see if we needed anything else as I'd of liked more gravy. The pub is a traditional local pub and although dated I like classic pubs and I'm basing the review on the food and drink not the decor. We would return. Thanks to the chef for a lovely Sunday lunch.

We had purchased a Groupon voucher for two courses for two people and were looking forward to visiting this establishment for the first time. The Groupon allowed us to get a starter up to the value of £6:75 and main up to value of £8:75 ( a great deal or so we thought ) . The picture accompanying the Groupon showed some beautiful looking scallops as a starter, my hubby opted for those and I for the fresh mussels. We were told these two items were not available, how convenient not to have the two higher priced items unavailable!!!We settled for squid and prawn cocktail, both were okay , just okay ! I'm trying to cut down on my bread consumption and the restaurant certainly helped with this , the thin sliced cheap supermarket white bread served with the prawn cocktail didn't tempt me all !!!!For our mains we both had a Thai stir fry , once again okay but nothing special. The restaurant had an 'all singing all dancing ' coffee machine, but if you only use mediocre coffee beans you will only get mediocre coffee, our cappuccino and americano was certainly lacking in flavour. Will we be revisiting this restaurant? I don't think so. At least Groupon allows one to try a restaurant without a huge expense, but surely these are the customers you should impress then hopefully they will return and pay full prices . We very rarely use Groupon and are usually disappointed.

Booked in for Sunday lunch on a Groupon voucher which I'm sometimes a bit dubious when price is so low. Unfortunately I was right to be dubious! It's been a few years since I've visited this place so 1st impressions as you walk through the bar are quite good i.e. Nicely decorated with leather settees. We were shown to our table on arrival after ordering some drinks. After ordering our meals we were then told they had run out of beef and lamb - never very good running out of the main dishes on a Sunday lunch! We had to order turkey instead. The 2 cokes in our drinks order took over 20 mins to arrive due to problem at bar. Kids were already eating main course before they got a drink and we'd ordered them before we sat down! The late drinks were taken off our bill as a gesture of goodwill. Food was average. Turkey was very dry and needed to be soaked in gravy for any taste.Staff were friendly enough albeit a bit brusk. It's not ever going to be a fine dining experience but if you are looking for value for money and some basic grub then it fits the bill.

The bar was nicer than expected with leather sofas, plenty of high seats & tables & a pleasant decor, drinks served swiftly by member of staff who'd been outside seconds earlier smoking, didn't see her wash her hands! Next to us there were a group of 3 guys & every sentence they spoke contained expletives, it wasn't nice to hear & uncalled for, recognising this is beyond the pubs control but they were loud (regulars from the greeting at the bar), I found it offensive, not something I wish to listen to when out for a meal or a drink & based on this visit, will not return.

Just stayed here with my husband and 2 boys 13 and 10.we visited to sedgefield for the 1st time for the races.stayed for 2 nights room only as they don't do breakfast here but you can eat in the "sister hotel called cross hills" for breakfast, this hotel just smelled really bad of urine the whole time we was in there!so I wouldn't eat or even have a drink here, rooms very basic but ok. We did have to remind them twice to put an extra bed in, if you are going here soon make sure you take warm clothing as the heating in your room doesn't come on until 2pm. So if you want abit of time getting showered etc then it's very cold, in the night it was freezing!we called in for a drink in the ' cross hills' and it was awful, sent drinks back, think they need to clean their pipes. The golden lion was a nice cosy place, our boys had a really nice meal there, it was huge, had a lasagne and the other son had a cottage pie, San Miguel was nice, a lady behind the bar offered to charge 1 of our devices up which I thought was really nice of her as we had travelled 2 hours, went in the ' dun cow' and that sounded a lot better than the hardwick hotel on the accommodation side,So if you need somewhere to stay, don't look at the hardwick!!!!!!

We all left totally stuffed.Exceptional value with a Groupon, still very good value without.Recommended

We booked a table for 2 at 8.00pm on Saturday night after having purchased a groupon voucher. We arrived only to be told that the last orders were 7.30pm so couldn't be served. My husband asked to see the manager who seemed to be the chef as well and he was totally unapologetic and very rude. The girl we spoke to first said that it was someone new who took the booking hence the mistake. I would never go back to that place again so be warned!

My family and I have visited this restaurant 3 times now in as many weeks such is the quality of the meals, service and the price. It is rare these days that these qualities are seen together in one place but in the case of the Hardwick arms you can literally have it all. The menu offers everything you could ask for in the traditional meal sector and also has outstanding thai meals. You can really tell that all the ingredients used are fresh and of the highest quality and that this together with the expertise of the chef's is what makes the difference.

Ate here on Tuesday the 28th of June. It was booked as a business lunch for 16. The food was over cooked. Burnt dry and the chips has been cooked in old fat. I hardly touched my meal. Had scampi and chips. I could of thrown the scampi of the wall and it would of come back and done damage was that hard. Later thar afternoon alot of our staff had upset tummies. And 2 members of our staff were off the following 2 days. Both had very upset tummies involving being sick and not of the toilet. I would never eat in here again.

Visited here with a Groupon offer with my partner. Decided to have starter which could have been a main meal in itself with a few chips on the side. My partner said it was the best Hunters Chicken he had ever had. I decided to go with the lamb shank which was also delicious. Very large portions though. I would thoroughly recommend eating here, great value food.

Went to this restaurant for a Sunday lunch (groupon). When we arrived the place was packed which was understandable. We got to our table and we're handed the menus. I wanted the lamb dinner but they had no lamb and I didn't like the look of the pork. I got the chicken and when it came, the plate was huge. Just the plate though. The food was scattered around this massive plate so the food for cold fast. Mashed potatoes were frozen auntbessies swirls (which was extremely disappointing for a restaurant) and the amount of meat was very little. I had chicken breast that was about half a centimetre thick and had three slices. I'm a growing lad so this was like an appetizer for me.The price was very high for what we got.The veg that came in a separate fish was weird. Tasted a bit like stale water and tea (the drink).

We both had the 8oz sirloin steaks accompanied by a generous portion of Chips, Peas, Mushrooms and Onion rings. We opted for the vegetable option with Caulifower, Brocolli and Carrots all were well cooked and properly al dente. All the food was served piping hot on hot plates which we also prefer. The local cask ales were very good and I enjoyed a pint of Blue Lamp's Lazy Days. The service was pleasant and efficient. We will certainly eat here again when we are back in the area and would recommend this pub to anyone considering eating in Sedgefield.

Chips looked like the fat was old and they were a dark brown and tasted horrible. The batter on the fish was again because of the old fat, horrible and fish itself like jelly! Now I know why they are constantly on groupon because no one will return!

We eat and drink at the Hardwick arms quite often and booked to eat as normal on a Saturday night. After a long week we were looking forward to a nice meal and a bottle of wine! We arrived 15 minutes early and was going to have a pre meal drink. We tried to check in with the waitress who then told us that we were not booked in ???? We had booked 3 days earlier with the head of house for a table time of 7.15pm and confirmed the date and time. We were very upset when we found out that we had not been booked in for the Saturday but in fact booked in for the Friday evening by mistake. The waitress stated that she would check with "the boss" due to the mistake being theirs and try and fit us in. We were then told "the boss said no and nothing she could do even though it was their mistake". What a great way to treat your regular paying customers. We then left hungry and the whole experience had ruined a night we had been looking forward to ........there needs to be some improvement. For starters the right hand needs to know what the left had is doing. Very very upset and disappointed with the way the staff and "the boss" has just teated people who support them in tough times like they do not matter. Let me remind you we keep your business going threw tough times and good. I think we will now try different places to eat as it seems customers do not matter here when the staff make such a huge mistake.

The restaurant is very well appointed, the bar has the usual range of drinks available. Our starters were all very tasty, fresh and hot. Spring rolls, king prawn wontons, squid rings and Thai fish cakes were our selections. Main courses were Thai chicken yellow curry, Thai pork red curry, sweet and sour chicken and mine was chicken stir fry with fresh chilli, ginger and oyster sauce. Superb!

When u told her she then said they needed 48 hours notice at this point I hung up.Then I decided to ring back to speak to the manager who I was told again by the same lady he was not in it hen said I was putting a bad review on trip advisor then all of a sudden a mans voice came on saying if it was group on don't bother coming get my money back he was being very rude and wouldn't give his name when I said I was going on trip advisor he said make sure it is a bad review you give us at that point I ended the conversation and I rang taste card to complain it's not the 1st review like my experience I would advise anyone looking to go to this place to give it a miss they are not nice people and I don't know how they are still in business the daft thing is by the time we bought a bottle of wine and other drinks we would have spent over £50 not bad for a quiet Tuesday in January but I they don't want the business,I have reviewed lots of places and I always give positive comments but I couldn't in this case sorry

Visited the restaurant with a groupon voucher for 2 X 2 course steak dinner. There are a number of restaurants/hotels in the Sedgefield area that carry the name Hardwick and we weren't certain which one had our reservation. Arriving in the dark it was difficult to find the entrance immediately and forebodings started. The restaurant is past the public bar and an argument between drinkers was raging as we went in. Still we carried on. We were then introduced to our waitress for the evening Ella, The first sign that things were improving. Ella served us drinks checked that we had menus and served us very well creating a more pleasant experience. The meal was sirloin steak with the trimmings and either a starter or sweet to make up the second course. The food was very good and that combined with Ella's help over came the disappointing start to the evening. Foodlover539

After trying to get in touch with hotel for the past few days finally a guy picked up. I asked if he had a table this afternoon, said he would check. Once he realised I was a groupon customer he said that I must give 48hrs notice and they had no tables free. 1hr later I called back to book for another day, to my surprise the lady who picked up said we could go this afternoon. What a joke. Arrangements had already been changed. I assumed the whole idea of a groupon deal was to look good and offer good customer service to encourage further trade for new people. Do not use this hotel or restaurant, worse place I have ever dealt with. I will also log a complaint with groupon, should not have the option to use groupon !

The food is lovely, so it is such a shame people are receiving bad service. Staff only seem rude to those who purchase groupons, I know friends and family who have also purchased groupons on 5 different occasions and been treated poorly. I used a Groupon Offer to try out the Sunday Lunch at Hardwick Arms Hotel. I bought a voucher for 4 and took our Grandsons. From the moment we entered the bar we were shown to our table and looked after buy the wonderful staff. The Restaurant was busy but everything was well organised. Our little Grandsons were fussed over by a lovely lady serving us. We chose 3 chicken dinners and 1 beef. The presentation of the food was great, unbelievable amount of sumptuous vegetables with juicy meat and a great serving of additional broccoli, cauliflower and peas. Extra Gravy and sauces. It was mouth watering; my Grandsons who are very picky over their food ate it with the exception of a few vegetables. We were stuffed, we were asked if we wanted sweets but the boys would have left the sweets however the lady serving us gave them 2 small ice-creams (and did not charge) My husband did say that this was the best Sunday Dinner at a restaurant he has been served.
