Thai River in County Durham

Horrible food. Loads of skin in meal and chicken was slimy. Not nice at all so I wouldn’t recommend. Don’t bother to go here.

The food was absolutely beautiful, taste, and presentation, the service was brilliant. The location is fabulous, Durham cathedral within eye shot and situated on the river which provides the perfect photo opportunity.

Sadly disappointing experience. Restaurant in an ideal location and has good opening hours. However, the prices on the menu, didn't reflect the quality of the food, not the portion sizes. Also, as a vegetarian, I found the lack or vartiety in vegetarian dishes underwhelming (they are all tofu dishes). Staff were lovely and friendly, just a little disappointing overall.

Had booked a table as we had eaten here before and the food had been very good and the restaurant really nice with fresh flowers on tables etc. When we arrived last night there was a sign on the door and the bar to say the alcohol licence had expired so soft drinks only or could bring your own. No indication of this at time of booking. We were out to enjoy a meal with a couple of drinks and bottle of wine so we left and went elsewhere.

The best spot to eat in Durham. Service is unmatched, every item on the menu is incredible and the location is perfect.

Reservamos una mesa para nietos de 2o cumpleaños para asegurar espacio para nosotros, 6 adultos y 2 bebés. Llegué para encontrar ninguna mesa preparada para nosotros, tuvimos que mover mesas nosotros mismos para acomodar cochecito. La trona estaba parcialmente rota. Después de 20 minutos tenía que pedir a alguien que tomara bebidas orden que tardó otros 10 minutos en llegar y fueron pillados al final de la mesa. Pedido de comida tomada , todos pedimos entrantes seguidos de platos principales. Después de unos 40 minutos una camarera empezó a sacar nuestros platos principales, explicamos que ni siquiera habíamos tenido entrantes (pudimos ver al camarero original hurgando en los archivos de pedidos) y luego trató de decir que no habíamos pedido ninguno. ¡A estas alturas habíamos estado allí una hora sin comida! Su actitud era terrible, nos sentimos muy inoportunos todo el tiempo que estuvimos allí. Decidimos darnos por vencidos e irnos a otro lugar así que fui a pagar las bebidas, ni siquiera obtuvimos una disculpa adecuada, ¡no importa la oferta de una bebida gratis! Nunca volverás a ir.

Si pudiera darle a Thai River 6 estrellas lo haría. Personal muy amable y eficiente, un entorno muy agradable y la comida más increíble. Comimos curry amarillo y pato con chile y ajo y recomendaría ambos platos a cualquiera que visite aquí. Si nos hubiéramos quedado otra noche en Durham habríamos comido aquí de nuevo. No puedo recomendarlo lo suficiente.

Visited this established this evening at 8pm. We were rudely spoken to by a gentleman who insisted our voucher wasn't valid which was not true. He was insisting we purchase our food for the al a carte menu. Upon which having already purchasing the voucher we left! We then headed to Zaap Thai I can honestly say the food was amazing as was the service.

Wonderful meal served by very friendly and efficient team. No booking was necessary. Great atmosphere - not too noisy - and fab location.

Located in Durham beside the river Wear Thai River Durham is run by their Thai owner. Service was really good. And the interior is very nice and cozy. Now onto the food. We ordered: Tom yum seafood udon soup - we wanted Tom yum soup and we wanted to order noodles as well. So we got a mix both. The broth was creamy and flavourful. Portion size was plenty with a good amount of seafood. It had mussels, cuttlefish, prawns, mushrooms. Thai fish cakes - these were the appetisers and went well with the Tom Yum Seafood Udon Soup. I usually like to dip my Thai appetiser in my tom yum soup. So this was a good combination. Duck on fire - this was the star. Stir fried roasted duck with basil, chilli and garlic. It was like a burst of flavours inside my mouth. The duck skin was crispy and the meat itself was tender. Loved the sauce/marination. This went really well with the steamed rice we ordered. This is dish is one of their best sellers according to their menu. I’d highly recommend this restaurant. They accept both cash and card payment. Do give it a try when you visit Durham and want to try Thai food by the river.

Visit here for the first time and the venue is near the river in Durham in the central area. The service and food was very good quality and tasty. The duck taramind was good and spicy as opposed to sweet in other venues I have had this dish. Decor was pleasant and prices reasonable. Would return

Visited yesterday with a Wowcher, expected small portions but the starters were rather big, 4 chicken satay which were nice with a nice sauce and salt n pepper belly pork chunks which were lovely, mains were Chicken Massaman which was lovely and a red chicken curry which was also lovely, 2 large portions of rice and a drink each ,only negative was the wine given it was quite yellow and for me not nice, will definitely be going again

Authentic Thai food managed by Thai boss. Location is right at the city centre. Many Asian customer like this place. Good quality of food and portion is generous. Favourite meeting place for students.

Warm Welcome, in a well-presented, clean restaurant. The Staff were lovely, warm and engaging. The food was wonderful; so much that we ate there each night of our stay, breaking our plan to try different restaurants! The service, food and atmosphere was great each time. Teh restaurant is tucked away, overlooking the river, and so is just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of a busy Durham on a weekend evening, but still close enough to be back in it, within a minute. Will definitely visit here again, we have to work our way through the menu!

Very disappointing customer care and tasteless food. We are not going back to this restaurant. My friend ordered chicken and it looked like and tasted too dry like mushrooms. My other friend ordered grilled prawns but they were also tasteless and swimming in a lake of tasteless sauce. My Duck in Tamarind sauce was not any better. We left most of the food on our plates. The waitress was very disconnected, non-smiling, almost hostile. We actually thought she was racist because she chose to first serve a white person who was behind us on the queue when we made payment.

Visited Thai River over bank holiday weekend and unfortunately won't be going back. We usually opt for Nadon Thai or Zen but fancied somewhere different. We decided on satay chicken for starter and this came nicely presented but the chicken was dry as sticks. We then chose beef panang curry and the duck on fire dish. Panang curry was average, iv had better. This was served with boiled rice. The duck on fire dish was like a spicy and sour dish, edible but not sure why it's called 'on fire' as it wasn't really spicy. This again was average, we weren't wowed at the taste. We are yet to see a waiter come to the table to ask if everything was OK. Small bottles of tiger £6. Average food for over average prices in comparison to other Thai restaurants in the area. Not a patch on Zen.

Food was lovely- really recommend the crispy pork! There were some difficulties communicating with the waitress about food intolerances, so I would be mindful if you have one or any allergies. Also the prices on the online menu are wrong, and food is more expensive now on the menus in the restaurant

Unfortunately, the service I received was far from the hospitable and respectful environment I had anticipated. From the moment I entered, the host's demeanor cast a shadow over the experience. Their pretentious attitude and lack of basic hospitality left me feeling unwelcome and undervalued. The expectation of a friendly greeting was replaced by a sense of being an inconvenience, which is contrary to the essence of Thai hospitality. The host's 'primadonna' behavior suggested that their personal needs were more important than the guests'. This not only resulted in inefficient service but also an uncomfortable atmosphere for me as a patron. What was most disconcerting, however, was the apparent discriminatory treatment. It seemed as though respect and courtesy were selectively given, which is not only inappropriate but also deeply troubling. Equality is a fundamental right, and in a setting that should celebrate diversity and inclusivity, such behavior is especially out of place.

Decrepit service if you can call it service….. we sat for 1 and a half hours waiting for our mains to arrive…. What a disappointment…

Ordered at 6.45pm order was supposed to be delivered by 7.15pm. At 8.45pm no update, so ended up diving to collect order as was getting absolutely no where chasing. An absolutely shocking experience, would never consider using this service again!

Just finished a lovely meal at the Thai River, Durham. Ironically I noticed it via a Wowcher offer to fit in with a meeting in Durham. Easy to book at table and a warm welcome on entry. Great value menu, effectively free starter and a drink. Excellent service, Amazing flavours thoroughly worth a visit. Tom Yam Chicken soup, Crispy Pork, Pad Thai Chicken & Stir fried Beef & pepper in Black Bean vegetable sauce. All excellent. Thank you Thai River.

We all loved our meal, quite chilli hot but expected in a Thai restaurant, fresh veg and salat everything freshly prepared 😋

Order at 19:20 still had not arrived by 21:00 despite only supposed to be 35 minute wait. I drove to restaurant and they were so rude and had not even attempted to make my food. I waited for my food and left. I did not use delivery driver as I had to come to collect as I could not get in touch with the restaurant. The delivery driver did tell me they do this all the time when busy, they just ignore just eat orders. NEVER AGAIN POOR SERVICE AND RUDENESS ON ANOTHER LEVEL!

Used to be my favourite Thai restaurant Got the spicy basil king prawn paid a extra £1.50 for the fried egg on rice had a hard yolk and got a very small portion of food probably 1/2 the amount used to get and the prices are a lot higher hopefully they can get back on track and get sorted out

Normally come here and it’s absolutely fab however we came recently and it was not the same. The food was ok and the attitude of one staff member was horrendous. After ages of waiting with dirty plates on the table and being the only table in the restaurant we got the bill and there was a service charge on the receipt. We asked them to take the service change off the bill as we were wanting to leave a tip in cash. However we were told it is “compulsory” service charge. She finally took the service charge off the bill after arguing and snatching the receipt off my family member then storming off. Absolutely terrible service!

I wasn't exactly happy with the food, however great service and atmosphere. I had some prawn dish as the mains, wasn't happy with the sauce, had some fried crispy pork belly it was good 👍.

The delivery was at 18.50 after being initially indicated at 17.30 we telephoned the restaurant at 18.00 who indicated that the problem was the lack of a driver to pick up. Please refund us the costs as the food was no longer fresh and it was no longer a convenient time to eat

Never acknowledged my booking made by email so had to chase it up. Very disappointing meal, bland and tasteless. Waiter took 2 full plates away and never said anything or queried why it was all left.

This is a beautiful restaurant on a quiet spot overlooking the River Wear with a great view of Durham Castle. The food is wonderful, delicious and presented with lovely attention to detail. Lovely staff as well. As with a good Thai restaurant, this is food that tastes clean as well as delicious, and it's a space you feel better for having spent time in.

We had mixed thoughts on Thai river we got the sharing starter which was very nice no complaints. For main I got the fish souffle which was nice. My partner got the lamb shank massaman.. which again tasted nice but there was only a very small amount of lamb.. also the prices were different from the online menu....

Very expensive for three small dishes, the salad was so spicy as to be inedible and the two mains were very poor quality. I won’t be using them again.

Ordered at 19:43 for our food to be delivered close to 22:00. I attempted to call the restaurant only for the call to be answered (after waiting some time) and immediately hung up on. Subsequent calls left unanswered. Terrible service. Food delivered wasn’t hot and not worth waiting 2 hours for. We’ve ordered quite a lot before but for this service I won’t be ordering again..

This place serves beautiful food I have been here a few of times and the food is always hot and tasty. The staff are very good. I really can't believe that the restaurant is only half full, the place is really clean and well presented. I would definitely recommend any of the seafood dishes.

we came in last minute and it was pretty busy, but we immediately seated and served. it did take quite a while for the food to come out with others being brought their food before us, but again we didn't book so we didn't mind. the waitresses were very apologetic and the food was well worth the wait. it was a bit rowdy but it was a Saturday night

I eat a lot of Thai food in the UK and in Thailand where I travel regularly. There are a few great places in the north east who have passion for their craft. This is truly awful Thai food. It reminded me of someone at home cooking Thai food for the first time. There was no balance of flavours. I ordered penang curry and it didn’t come with one of the main toppings and it was really salty. Also asked for a hot Thai tea but they can’t be bothered to make it so had to have an iced one that batch make and chill. My girlfriend ordered pad kra pao which was edible but her egg was raw inside. £1.40 for one egg that we wouldn’t eat. The person who served us had a terrible attitude and was very abrupt. I would never go back.

Absolutely beautiful food in a gorgeous setting

Visited for the first time and absolutely loved this authentic Thai food. Shared the stater platter and each item was very tasty. Had the beef salad and it was up there with the best I’ve had. Highly recommended

This is my second visit and although I enjoyed it last time, this was definitely not the case when we visited tonight. There was only one other table in tonight when we arrived and we waited what seemed like a lifetime for drinks. Which the waiter managed to get wrong. I ordered one still mineral water and he brought a soda water and two glasses of lukewarm tap water which tasted odd. The starters were good. I ordered the wonton soup and my friend ordered the chicken on toast. Unfortunately, this is where the positives ended. I order a seafood mixed platter for main course. When it arrive I was impressed with the quantity of seafood but there was a very peculiar smell. As I had a bite of the first prawn I noticed that it had two separate temperatures. It was hot and the outside and slimy and cold on the inside and the taste was rancid! I investigated the other prawns by pulling them apart and discovered that they were all raw and the peculiar smell from earlier was in fact coming from the prawns. This immediately made me feel ill. The water returned with our second round of drinks and I told him about the undercooked prawns. He said he would change it right away. No apology. After that I ran straight to the toilet as I felt physically sick. There was no way I would attempted to eat anything else. I was on the verge of vomiting and have been all night at the thought of smelly, slimy, half cooked prawn I ate. Upon paying I tried to get the attention of our waiter but he avoided eye contact. The woman who was taking payment didn’t seem to speak much English. They had taken off my main meal but the entire experience was ruined by the raw prawns. My friend also left her full main meal as she didn’t have much of an appetite after I chucked up my wonton soup in the toilets. I understand that accidents happen but our meal was totally ruined by something that was completely the chefs fault. He should be probing all food for internal temperatures and recording them for their hygiene records. I paid £65 for food that we didn’t eat or was eaten but thrown up in the gents toilets. I will never go back and if I’m ill over the next few days I will be seeking legal action!

Starters : satay and dumplings - see pics, were an unhealthy temperature: tepid, more cool than cold, and definitely not hot. Rice - egg fried - was hot and delicious as was the red curry. Thai man - presumably the owner - was making a noisy racket at a table very near us. Looked like they were watching snooker on his phone. Very rude. Place was empty. No atmosphere. Girl serving us was lovely though. Wouldn't go back.

This place has never changed in quality. Every now and then you go somewhere and you think, hmm not as good as it was. Been here numerous times never changed. Great food and location if you get a window seat is impressive.

Fantastic quality, great portions, well packaged and the food was delicious.

i'm a thai food lover. As usual soups was refreshing and delecious. i would recommend to try their soups. And view from restaurant was fabulous.

With the exception of 1 meal, all (party of 5) others where excellent. Management remedied this, will definitely return.

First time for us and certainly won’t be the last! Food was amazing! As was the service. We went for the set menu for two. Excellent value and huge portions.

Worst Thai food in my life. please don’t eat here if you know what Thai food is. My gf and I ordered the Thai Ocean grill and Tom Yum soup which were unacceptably bad. The grilled sea food was totally cold, fishy, stinky and in such a small portion compared to its price of £30. Furthermore, they didn’t even clean the dirt from the back of the prawn (see pic below). The Tomyum soup is salty doesn’t taste like Tom Yum at all.

Please read this 🥲 (first time putting bad review) We ordered Prawn Tomyum, Seafood Grill and Pineapple fried rice in a total of 60 pounds. None of them are good🤦🏼‍♀️ 1. Prawn tomyum: clear sour and super salty soup without any tomyum taste 😫 2. Seafood grill: unfresh and chewy squid, unclean prawn and mussels served. Seafood was not fully grilled and it’s cold when served. Such a small portion that obviously didn’t worth 30 quid 😫 3. Pineapple fried rice: Very blend just like white rice with yellow colouring 😫 *not just the food is bad but importantly unhygienic🥹. I had a bad stomach kick after having the seafood 🥹

We waited so long for the food - over 2 hours from when we ordered it - that we had to drive there and pick it up ourselves. The restaurant could not get in touch with just eat for support to rectify this.

The Udon Pad Sam Sa Hai contained prawn and other seafood, which was not listed in the ingredients on the website. This is a clear oversight in allergen safety.

I placed an order at 20:18 with an expected delivery time of 20:45-21:05. It was continuously being pushed back for the delivery time to then being 21:30 -21:50. I rang restaurant at 21:03 who advised that a driver had not been assigned and that was why there was a delay, they assured me that the food was not cooked. Waited a while for drinks order to come , starter came soup was lovely fishcakes weren't nice at all. Mains came beef was dry and chewy Chicken was awful My partner isn't fussy and he couldn't eat either meals. We won't be returning and definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant

Really enjoyed our Saturday lunch at Thai River. Very attentive staff. Nice ambience. Superb food and not at all pricey considering the quality of the food and service. Highly recommended.

Just eat delivery driver never picked up order. But Thai river were incredibly kind and delivered the food themselves so I wasn’t left waiting.

Food was delicious but the Just Eat drivers hadn't even turned up an hour after placing the order. I ended up collecting it myself. I'll be going direct next time.

Just Eat was unable to give a driver so a member of the Thai river team drove out to give my order. He was a lovely and kind man and I appreciate his dedication and kindness to bring my order to me :) thank you so much, it is incredibly appreciated and I can’t thank the man enough!

If you order a set, you must asked for your drink. They won’t serve you the drink written on your set menu if you did not ask for it. This is very different from other restaurants. Usually when your set include drinks, the waiter or waitress would serve you without you asking for it. Wouldn’t recommend, if you forget to ask for your drink in the set and pay , they won’t remind you, and they think it is your own problem not getting your drink.

Me and my wife went here for our anniversary. Got to say we went in there blind not knowing what our choices were and made a lucky guess. Got to say we guessed perfect I had crispy squid for starter with salad and chilli sauce was amazing with a generous starter portion. And if you like a bit spice but not too much then definitely go for the Duck Curry (as written on the menu) best meal out for a long time excellent service and nice pint of Stella. Reasonable prices also.

I ordered Pad kha phauw which it came with rice, taste was good , only rice seemed to be left over and warm with microwave as It's quite dry.

The food was amazing with quite big portions me and my daughter couldn't finish it all so staff popped it in take away containers for us to take home. Staff were lovely, polite and helpful. Nice atmosphere. We finished off with an amazing special green tea. Thoroughly recommend this Thai restaurant.

Don’t no we’re to start shocking Went in for lunch order wine delivered started to order food to be told it all needs to co s out together soup apitizer and mains as short staffed should have told us when we were seated hence got up and left went some were else been 6/7 times no more just lost &100 pound no wonder places go bust will not be going back and please don’t respond as it’s a waste of time you are either open or not as simple as that
