27th August 2024 Mouldy sandwich?! We went for a quick sandwich and a cup of tea after a day out. Although we thought the prices were expensive, we could live with paying £13.50 for a bacon sandwich as we thought it would be good quality. The bread was stale and the bacon looked like dried shoe sole, but that wasn't the worst part. My husband ordered a cheddar cheese sandwich, the cheddar had a strange taste and I would say it had gone bad, it was indeed mouldy. Overpriced and disappointing to say the least. Sadly we won't be returning here.

Stopped off for breakfast on a Sunday morning. The place was quite busy but we found a table easily. When I enquired at the bar if breakfast was available to non residents I was advised that it was, was pointed in the direction of some menus and told we had ten minutes to choose and order at the bar. The menus had no prices but we duly selected French toast, a vegetarian breakfast and coffees. The coffees arrived precariously balanced on a tray, consequently my cappacino was slopped into the saucer. No matter, it was only lukewarm and had to be returned anyway! The person at the bar just said ‘ok’ when I asked for a hot version, though the replacement was delivered with an apology. Regretfully it was not hot and was drunk in one. I was not inclined to go for best of three and no one came back to check that it was ok. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his cooked breakfast and said he would give it a ten out of ten. My French toast was not what I expected in that it lacked any sign of the bread being cooked in any kind of coating but it was none the less a pleasant eating experience which was down to the yogurt and berry compote that it was covered in. No one asked if everything was ok or if we enjoyed our meal. My husband didn’t get a receipt when he paid at the point of ordering. The hotel website says that a 10% service charge is automatically added to the bill. I would prefer to decide if the service warrants a tip. A little difficult to negotiate after the event and rather presumptuous to charge up front! All in all not a bad experience, reasonable food, nice surroundings but the service could be improved.

I have a gluten allergy which I advised The Grosvenor of when booking and ordering. I ordered the chicken which on the menu came with pomme dauphine which is generally made with wheat flour. I asked our waiter if I could have this dish and was surprised when he didn't come back to advise a substitute for the pomme dauphine. When the dish arrived I immediately asked the waiter again if this dish was gluten free and explained that pomme dauphine is made with potatoes and choux pastry. He went away to check again saying that even this item was gluten free. I am now doubled up in pain with stomach cramps and diarrhoea which happens when I have been exposed to gluten. I have eaten here several times as well so I am surprised and shocked that this has happened. I would advise to avoid if you have any intolerances. Update: Hi Amy @The Grosvenor Shaftesbury, thank you for your response, and for your reassurance of your allergen procedures. As I mentioned I have eaten with yourselves before on many occasions and I have thoroughly enjoyed my meals, it is unfortunate that on this occasion that I had such a bad reaction, and so soon after having eaten. I have amended my rating accordingly and will indeed endeavour to visit again in the future.

Hotel in Shaftesbury, nice old spacious hotel, large bar and separate dining room, I had the smoked mackerel with crackers, my wife the salami with chillies. We both had the roast, my only complaint is deep fried potatoes, not roasted potatoes, good apart from that. Both had desserts, triple chocolate brownie, and a strawberry tartlet. Nice friendly attentive service

I went there for lunch. I asked for there to be no tomatoes in my salad, and they failed to do this. When I pointed it out, (it was a tomato sauce) they just shrugged their shoulders. I asked for bread, right at the beginning, as we were both very hungry, this failed to arrive, and I had to ask again. It finally arrived when we had nearly finished our meal. When the bill came, I was charged for Toast and then Toast and Jam, so twice. When I queried this, they said it was because I asked for it twice., although I only received toast (not bread as requested). They failed to take the price of the toast and jam off the bill. I had heard from other locals that it is dreadful, and they were right! (The actual chicken salad was ok).

We stayed here for one night en route to Cornwall and loved everything about it. The location is perfect and right in the heart of Shaftesbury for visiting Gold Hill, Shaftesbury Abbey ruins etc. The hotel has been very stylishly and tastefully appointed, we were given a room upgrade by the Manager which was very much appreciated, and had a lovely large room overlooking the high street. The dinner and breakfast were also superb. We would love to stay there again.

We weren’t checked in until 3:20 when we had to remind the barman/receptionist that we were waiting in the bar area as he had asked us an hour before. The room was ok, a bit dark, with a window that rattled constantly. We were on a Stay & Dine offer, which we’ve purchased before in 3 of the group’s other hotels. The evening meal was average; chorizo potatoes came on a tiny plate with bright green liquid/sauce alongside. Chips were huge, and not to our liking. So not really worth the extra,- we would have preferred to eat elsewhere. Very loud DJ on a Friday night which attracted a noisy/wild group of youngsters who left as soon as the DJ signed off at 9pm thankfully. The DJ’s music was more suited to a nightclub, not a chilled out hotel. The bar area was very cold, and even though they had a wood burner it wasn’t lit!!! Overall, not half as good as your other hotels in the group which we’ve stayed at, e.g The Swan at Wedmore and Timbrell’s Yard at Bradford on Avon. We wouldn’t stay here again.

Just back from an overnight stay at the Grosvenor Arms and we were delighted. First time visit to Shaftesbury. Found the Grosvenor online, liked the look of it and we weren't disappointed. We arrived really early but received a warm welcome and to our surprise our room was already available. The room itself was perfect. Spacious , clean , with a big comfortable bed , plenty of wardrobe space and one of the best UK hotel bedrooms I've come across. A fantastic big, powerful shower. Excellent toiletries and great towels. The attention to detail in the room and bathroom were first class and a credit to the management and staff. We had booked the 'dine and stay' package so had dinner in the hotel too. Food was nice though my only feedback is that the choice of main meals is a bit limited. Breakfast this morning was great, freshly cooked with pastries, yogurt, jams, and cereals all available too. All in all a lovely break for us and a strong recommendation for anyone staying in Shaftesbury of surrounding area.

We ate at the bar in The Grosvenor Arms for lunch last Sunday to celebrate our friend’s birthday. It is a beautiful venue and the bar area is very nice. I decided to just have two starters because I was going to my son’s for dinner only a few hours later. My two friends ordered Sunday roast. I ordered the Venison scotch egg and crispy potato fries thinking that would tide me over. Not because I’m cheap and you can see from the menu, it actually costs more than most of the Sunday roasts. I did know this at the time when I decided that is what I wanted. What I did not expect was ‘Crispy potato fries, Godminster truffle cheese with spring onion aioli consists of THREE chips. I mean they were nice, but certainly not £3-per-chip nice. 😳 If our waiter hadn’t dashed off so quickly, I would have told him to take it away. Or at least asked ‘is that it?’ I’m happy to report the venison scotch eggs was delicious and worth every penny. My friends enjoyed their slow roast pork belly meals - generous portions, beautifully cooked, and from where I was sitting, mouth watering. I did mention my disappointment to the bar staff when we paid. They just looked at me as if I said something as benign as ‘your glasses are stacked nicely’. I did not pursue it further because I didn’t want to make it awkward for friends, especially as it was clear the bar staff couldn’t be less interested. Just ask about the food in more detail than I did when ordering.

The rooms are stunning, beautifully appointed, lovely soaps and hand creams etc. The bed was perfect, such a good night's sleep. Blackout curtains really helped as the window was single glazed, as you would expect from a period building, so a teeny bit of street noise. Shower was glorious. Breakfast was amazing and service was perfect, I was allowed to make up my own selection from the cooked breakfast. Slight wait on check in and out but staff were very busy. Would definitely return

Starters were Cornish coronation crab on toast, thinly spread so as to give a taste but no substance, and whiskey and brown sugar cured salmon, small portion, with rye bread. Neither inspired. Mains were rump steak, one medium with bernaise sauce, the other medium to well done with peppercorn sauce. Rosemary chips. Half the medium steak was left because it was too tough, the well done steak was also tough but edible. Deserts were Dorset cheese board and rhubarb parfait. The parfait was good but the Dorset cheese board could have come from the local supermarket. Cheddar was ordinary, red smoked was similar, the Brie was cold and out of proportion to the others size wise, and the blue salty and otherwise bland. Wine was a 500 ml carafe of Secateurs red, at £21 it was possibly overpriced, the house white, 2 glasses, was average. Initially we were told we were in the restaurant though we’d booked in the bar, when we asked if we could eat in the restaurant we were told it was full. The bar is lively but we had a view of the working side of it which included the bin, not offensive but there are better things to look at when having dinner. A mild complaint about the steak was noted and the deserts were offer gratis, appreciated. Sadly when one adds the taxi fare to the bill of over £137 (deserts would have taken it above £150), this was a less than average evening.

How to run a successful hospitality business and how to be disability aware 1. When a client checks in and mentions a disability, do NOT under any circumstances start talking slowly and deliberately as if the client is stupid. 2. When a client checks in and you are aware that they are less able OFFER to bring their bags or luggage in… do NOT leave them struggling with a lively assistance dog and 2 strollers and luggage to the 2nd floor when a first floor lift accessible room would have been so much more appropriate. 3. When the client smiles and explains that she has stayed before but cannot recall exactly when, don’t roll your eyes because she notices stuff like that and it’s diminishing. 4. Be aware that the client might be struggling with the considerable noise levels and business in the hotel foyer and bar area. 5. Consider making yourself more aware of visible and invisible disabilities - good customer care isnt simply responding to high end clients who shout for attention and complain to get what they want. it’s about quiet customers who struggle with anxiety and need care, not patronising slow speed talking. A few tips for the Grosvenor Hotel Shaftesbury and their duty manager because the said client will be checking out tomorrow if things don’t improve…

The location is in the heart of this small but well formed Dorset town. In terms of location its only drawback is the lack of parking space. The staff are young and well drilled.Always helpful and polite even when the hotel is really busy. The bar area is lively and the drinks are reasonably priced. There are a mix of room sizes but all are well furnished etc. Food is better than good, with really good ingredients used at all times. We were a group of friend gathering for a weekend away. 14 persons were easily accommodated for dinner and even though the hotel and bar were really busy, we were always served and supplied with drinks on time. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending The Grosvenor for any age group to enjoy a short break.

Lunch for two. Service and food just about adequate. Staff polite but not friendly, there was a briskness. We have been many times pre COVID, but this time was disappointing.

Dont know if it’s because its been a while since I’ve been out for dinner, but this meal was incredible. Smaller portions but that didn’t matter, beautiful ‘pub’, friendly staff and REALLY delicious food! Thank you!!

We loved our 3 night (dinner B&B) stay recently. The hotel is right in the middle of Shaftesbury, at the start of the High Street which has great indie shops, and also a few yards from the famous Gold Hill, of the Hovis TV fame!...

We had a lovely evening meal here - interesting menu and tasty well presented food. All the waiting staff were delightful, and very helpful. We ate in the courtyard which was lovely. Very good wine list too.

Stiflingly hot Saturday morning's exploration of this Dorset town ended with lunch at this town centre hotel. We had a table in the compact courtyard, gratifyingly shaded from the fierce sunshine. The courtyard itself could benefit from a little more colourful planting but for all that it was a pleasant setting. My wife chose 2 starters the first of which, a spicy aubergine concoction, was sublime whilst I conventionally opted for the burger. Whilst a little too crumbly, my burger was nevertheless excellent. To nitpick I found the beer too warm but blame myself for ignoring my own best advice to avoid draught beers in hotels. My wife's glass of French chenin blanc hit the spot...well chilled and subtly fruity. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a meal but stick to the wine list.

Visited with family and three dogs. Nice servers. Good wine and ale selection. All food delicious. Nice to sit in courtyard, with babbling fountain.Seemed like a long walk to the kitchen, as it took ages to get sauces from server and she forgot the ketchup. There was also a big ole star anise in the risotto that wasn't listed and I accidentally bit into it and that was not a fun time. But damn was that risotto tasty otherwise!

Had to send the sharing starter back as some of the items were literally inedible. Vegetarian main also had a very questionable flavour but tried to eat some of it as no replacement starter was offered and was quite hungry at this point.Beer tasted off too so abandoned that and left without attempting dessert.Such a disappointing experience. Expensive and not even pleasant food.

Nice setting and decor, but poor experience today. 2 pm and in for a drink and lunch, but told they're too busy to take orders right now and perhaps check back in 20 mins or so. Not packed out at all and no explanation why they can't cope or even a simple apology. Def not returning or recommending to others :-(

From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere and staff were very warm and extremely friendly. The service and food was excellent and and pricing was reasonable. The place was packed and being that it was Christmas Eve that didn't seem to make a difference.

Knew the Grosvenor back in the 1960s when we lived nearby, so was interesting to revisit in its current form. Interesting decor and layout, we met up in the bar before moving into the restaurant. All very pleasant. Had difficulty in finding something on the menu, several of us deciding on a pizza, cooked on a wood fire. This was quite nice and more than I could manage. We had a very pleasant time together and would visit again when in the area.

She didn't want the potatoes or Yorkshire pudding, good thing, it would have been an enormous amount of food.I love the dining area, stylish an d clean.Friendly front of house team & Chef. Not sure about the decaff cappuccino - both my friend & I stared at the ceiling until 4am - Not happy with the sleep deprivation - ? so query IF the coffee machine had been "flushed" before making the decaf?

Only spent 30 minutes in this bar this week. It was a shame because the bar and lounge area are beautiful. However I object to paying £14-95 for a pint of lager and a large glass of pinot origi. Sorry guys but that is the dearest I have paid anywhere in the last 10 years and extortionate
