Had a takeaway this evening and it was awful. We have had food from this restaurant before and it was always nice so decided to have a treat for my 73rd birthday. I had a king prawn butterfly and it was totally tasteless and stale, followed by lamb passanda and god knows what happened there , lamb no flavour and not as tender as it used to be and the passanda sauce horrid. Not to mention the saag paneer which looked like a green mess. I’ve never had an Indian meal this bad before. I am so disappointed as the food from here was always great until now. Hubby had Raj special Biryani and the veg curry that came with it was a pot of oil and no taste to the main Biryani

We are regular customers and order from here as least once a month and as always the food was fabulous , fresh and on time. Although we do get them free we did think ONE poppadom between the usual 5 of us was a tad mean...we had awful job breaking it up to share amongst 5 people ;)

Not happy with sevise waited to long for food seems they look after delivery first not customer in restaurant won't be back sorry

Went to Clacton on Sea for a night and visited the British Raj after reading some good reviews. The staff were friendly the food was delicious and plentiful and very reasonably priced I would highly recommend.

Delicious authentic food and happy to cook a dish that wasn't on the menu. Excellent, friendly service. Very good value.

We have been staying at Valley Farm Holiday park and decided we wanted an Indian meal off site. Not being from the area we did a trip advisor search and the number 1 was The British Raj. There was 9 of us altogether and I will be honest when we first approached the restaurant we was a bit put off by the appearance from the outside. We thought it looked just like a takeaway and thought for a second we had gone to the wrong place. Please please don't let this put you off!! Inside it is a restaurant and a fab one at that. The waiter and customer service was one of the best we have experienced in a long time. Nothing was too much trouble. We split the bill into 3 families and he was attentive to all of us equally. He really was a lovely guy. The food was beautiful and they adjusted dishes to suit our particular requests. We had different starters and we highly recommend the award winning onion bhaji's. We had curry's ranging from mild to burn your mouth off and all were equally delicious. Our youngest of the party.had chicken nuggets and chips and his plate was clear too. Portions were big and we all left full and very happy. The only negative is we are on holiday here so wouldn't be able to come again soon but its definitely top of the list when we return!!

We visited on Saturday evening and the restaurant was empty. One other couple came in but that was all Service was good and so was the food so cannot fault it on that. It does not serve alcohol but you can bring your own. We went to Aldi just up the road for a bottle of wine. Nice food but not a great atmosphere.

The waiters weren't very attentive - we had to ask to order our food and didn't get our hot drinks after our buffet meal. The food however was plentiful and very flavourful.

I have had a few takeaways from this restaurant and generally they weren't bad. But I had one yesterday and everything was awful. The only thing that was ok was the korma sauce. The chicken in all dishes was rubbery and tasteless. The garlic rice didn't taste of anything. The supposed 'award' winning onion bhaji's were terrible, again no flavour at all, unidentifiable as onion inside. The chicken rogan sauce was watery, and bland. I ended up throwing most of it away. I don't know if it was a different chef, but it was awful. I won't be ordering from them again!

During the covid crisis we have had 4 takeaways ordered on line via there website they have been excellent everytime. I often eat Indian style food and this compares to the best. I cannot wait to book a table after the 17th MAY. We live in Holland on sea and it is always hot and fresh. This restuarant is under new owners since DECEMBER AND HAS IMPROVED

There was an incident, they handled it very professionally, thank you. We would order from there again.

Its mother's day so we had a takeaway from what used to be the great gurka so I didn't think it be as tasty tried the chef's speciality and the were wonder full I will definitely use this indian restraunt again please try it it really is tasty .

Thought I would give this a go even though been a few very bad reviews, guess what they were right! Meal was due to arrive 18:38 and no sign of it at 19:00 so rang up and was told it’s on its way now. It arrived at 19:50 after I had to call again, only to be told at first you already had it? Then told just a couple of minutes, when I got it it was luke warm and had very little flavour, I won’t be using again that’s for sure.

food is crap the restaurant is not very nice inside and they have illegal immagrants working in there as they got raided and was in the local paper they will probs delete this review but if i dont put it out there you will never know untill you make the mistake of ordering from there yourselfs

Ordered food at 18:45 for a 19:30 delvery Rang at 19:45 and it still hadn't left the premises Finally arrived at 20:35 Food was average but very greasy

Lived in Clacton for 20 years - why have I never eaten or got a takeaway from here before now! Wow wow wow - so yummy I could of eaten it all again!

Lovely fresh cooked food with maximum flavours . Absolutely spot on. One only criticism is that the poppadoms were not freshly cooked and tasted as if they came from a packet. Nice friendly staff but they were busy so service was a little slow. This restaurant does not sell alcohol and we were not made aware of this on booking. The tables are set well apart. I would give 4.5 out of 5 for the tasty food if I could.

Getting seated was a task the waitress was nice but dizzy food was nice the firs time we went but seems to have gone down hill a bit, saying that I would try again at some stage

Had an excellent dinner with 7 other friends. A great selection from the menu. I had one of their specialities and was very pleased with the flavours. The other ladies were also impressed with their choices. It was good value, inexpensive and attentive staff. I note that their hygiene rating had dropped but, hopefully, it will be rectified soon. On our way out we were thanked for choosing them!

Ordered and paid for delivery online for valentines takeaway. It stated order would be 50 minutes which was fine. Delivery actually took 2hrs and 10 minutes! After 1 hr 30 minutes I tried to call to find out where our order was but phone was constantly going to voice mail. I called 62 times! My husband left to go to the restaurant to find out where our food was when the delivery arrived. Food was all leaking In the packaging and definitely not worth the wait. Would never use again and would not recommend.

Waited over hour and a half , food arrived cold , driver went to wrong address , then to be lied to by the shop saying the driver has only just left when the driver called ten mins ago lost on other side of town Food tasted bland Would not recommend at all

Had a pleasant meal here while away on business. The food was nicely flavoured with just the right amount of heat and spice as described on the menu. Although it was mid week and not busy the staff were pleasantly attentive without feeling overwhelming. Will definitely eat here again but will venture for one of the more different items on the menu.

What has happened ? The food JS really gone downhill, we have had many a curry from the Great Gurkha and always recommended them to others however on ordering Saturday we collected the meal to find no one eating in the restaurant and when we got it home it was very oily and had no flavour whatsoever very very bland, not sure if I will try it again.

This has really gone downhill, it used to be the best Indian restaurant in Clacton but ordered a takeaway yesterday was told it would be 70 minutes and 1 hour 40 minutes I’m still waiting so rang up twice and no one picked up the phone they just cut me off! Then it did turn up 10 minutes later and both curries looked and tasted watered down!! The mint sauce also was just coloured water, I’ve had many many good curries there before but for whatever reason it’s gone downhill!! Avoid

Ordered delivery take away, food was 45 mins late, cold Really oiley especially onion bhaji where ch were dripping with oil, ordered vindaloo and it was less spiced than a madras, papadoms were soft really poor all round

We frequently go to this restaurant and always have a enjoyable dining experience. The restaurant is nicely decorated and sits approximately 45 people. The choice of food is what you would expect from this kind of establishment. Quality of the dishes are consistent with full flavour and the chicken is nice and soft..not tough or chewy. Only negative I can find is that the toilets are rather small..But all in all, I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a quiet romantic dinning experience..

The Great Gurkha is without a doubt the best Indian restaurant in Clacton. The staff were attentive and very professional, when the food arrived it was plentiful and piping hot, absolutely delicious. I would definitely revisit The Great Gurkha 10/10

The food from this place has been 10/10 for me every time and really enjoyed. Good price and very fast on delivery. Good atmosphere in the restaurant to and very nice staff.

Our first visit after finding good reviews online thought we would give it a go must say the food was excellent and very reasonably priced, staff are friendly and would recommend you give it a try 👍

We went here on a Saturday night and we were the only two people dining in in the whole restaurant. They seem to do a good trade on takeaways though.

My BF & I can't recommend this lovely authentic restaurant enough. Although we've been there before tonight was an anniversary & due to the high quality of service, environment, wonderfully cooked - delicately blended spices food & reasonable price - so we have vowed to frequent the restaurant far more often.

Everything is freshly cooked and bursting with flavour whenever we order dinner from here there’s smiles all round!

Once again another 5 star review with exceptional food, and the usual friendly staff. We prefer eating early, and were given a fast and efficient service, despite the large volume of takeaway orders.

This place used to be amazing but seems to have gone downhill recently. They where closed for a month without explanation. We ordered our usual array of dish nothing was the same.

Beautiful food. Ordered through just eat, in December and probably twice in Jan, I am boring and have a chicken tikka but my it was creamy and stunning. Chicken was perfect. Had a beautiful tandoori mixed grill the weekend, just yummy. I order a few hours in advance and timing is perfect that way! Always polite delivery drivers too. We’ll be back xx

Great food on a quiet evening in the winter - after business meetings all day , just needed a place to catch up with a colleague n enjoy a WONDERFUL dinner - This place delivered.

Saturday find this place through word of mouth from couple at the pub , we was not disappointed at all . Owner was very friendly, balti was best I have ever had me and my partner thoroughly enjoy the food compliments to chefs and the staff

Nice mix of Indian districts which does change the food totally. Authentic Indian. The food is very good and hot. Staff friendly and welcoming and knowledgeable.

Takeaway was 1.5hrs late stone cold tasted awful and found what looked like two dog hairs. Very rude manager, really didn’t care about his customers. Should be ashamed.

I have used the takeaway many times but tonight’s experience was the last, given wrong order twice order placed at 6pm told it would be 40 to 45 mins and it’s now 8.45 heading to KFC with a refund. If you can’t handle the number of orders DONT accept them, it’s the fastest way to loose good customers, you have lost me for certain

This is the first time I have ordered a take away here for a long time and I must admit it’s still just as good as it used to me! Very very good Indian food and great mint sauce I must add if you want a Indian take away in Clacton this is the best in the area!

Was told my delivery would be 110 mins max, 2hours later still no food, when I called to ask where my food was the gent on the phone started getting aggressive and shouting I tried explaining I like there food just wanted to know where my order was he then replied it's Saturday where busy and put the phone down, so as nice as the food is I would not order again out of principal.

100% the best quality Indian food and service in clacton, we, my family and friends never go anywhere else........ we go there now a few times a month and invite any of our work parties (which we have had a few!) Staff are fabulous and anything extra you may require it's there, absolutely 10 out 10 I would say xx

This restaurant has a wide range of delicious dishes that you do not see on every restaurant menu. The Chatti Chicken is particularly good.

While staying in weeley we ordered a take away from The Great Gurkha , it took a little bit of time to arrive , but in fairness , we’d ordered like £100 worth of food and it was very close to their closing time.

This restaurant does a great take-away menu and that's what we had. The restaurant opened at 17.00 and we phoned our order through about 5 minutes after. Twenty five minutes later we attended the restaurant to collect our order and found three other orders also waiting for collection. Everything ordered was present and service was swift and efficient. The meal, for four people, was ordered from the menu and turned out to be so good that i'd put it in my top three ever best Indian type meals. I'm 60 years old and i've had a lot (!) of indian type meals. I would heartily recommend this restaurant . In fact i woulkd suggest that you're missing out on a fantastic meal if you don't go.

I am a long time repeat customer of this restaurant and each and every time the food is perfect. The staff are always so friendly and will try to cater to your every wish, you just have to ask. The restaurant is beautifully decorated inside, wheelchair accessible as long as its not too wide. You can shut out the outside world and escape to this fantastic place. Great for birthday parties, casual meals or even a cheeky takeaway. 10/10 guys keep it up

We have been loyal customers to this Indian restaurant for a few years and had always been very happy with the quality of the food and the service.

Excellent food. The onion Baji and shek kebab to start were very tasty. Both curries ticked all the boxes for flavour and spice. Even the rice and nan bread were fluffy and fresh. Friendly and efficient waitress.

Visited the restaurant on 2nd April, and must thank the staff for such a wonderful evening. The food was exceptional and we were very well looked after. We had no delay in the food arriving, although we did eat early in the evening when it wasn't so busy. Must also mention how well they looked after my son who has special needs and in a wheelchair. Nothing was too much trouble.

The Gurka is a traditional Indian Restaurant. The menu has all the regular dishes along with a good selection of chefs specials. It is reasonably priced too.

I have been ordering from this restaurant for the last year and have been very impressed. I ordered tonight and it was accepted with just eat and I paid with a card as normal. I was then called by the restaurant about 20mins later to say they was going to charge me £3.50 as according to there sat nav it was 4.2 miles away which was over there 4 mile deliver radius. I said it actually says on just eat that it is 3.4 miles and that you have been delivering for the last year. I was then told that if I didn’t pay the extra they would not deliver my food. I then ask to speak to the manager and he said he is not here I am in charge. He then called me stupid and put the phone down on me. This is totally unacceptable and will not be going back to this restaurant. You should be ashamed.

Had booked our table for valentines night and when we arrived, the restaurant was full and incredibly busy, the staff were so pleasant and made us feel so welcome, the food absolutely beautiful and we couldn’t fault it, highly recommended to go to this wonderful restaurant, look forward to going again soon.

My wife and l went to the Guaka restaurant in Clacton- On-Sea last night and found the service and food outstanding ( one best curry's we had in long time)

Went to this restaurant on a Wednesday night, only two other diners.

We had tried a few times to get a delivery from here only to be told we were out of area.we are in point clear. I tried on Saturday and got a lovely lady who took my order and said they do deliver to st. Osyth and us. I appreciate it can be frustrating when a delivery is really late and it would put me off if more than 40 minutes, however ours was 10 minutes early and the best we have had since moving here 16 months ago. We usually have a couple a month so hopefully we can get delivered to from now on.

One of the best indians I had ever. I have worked in an indian restaurant these guys know their stuff I especialy like the okra and chana masala which you can't get many places although they tent to burn the daal their other dishes smell and taste excellent.

visiting my partners mum in Clacton-on-sea, we decided to have a meal for our last evening, unfortunately my partner hurt his foot so we had a takeaway, the service was fantastic, the deliver man with a lovey smile came and the meal was absolutely wonderful,this restaurant never fails to provide excellent food along with staff with a smile. Just had the most gorgeous lamb madras curry with mushroom rice, Bombay a look, 2 poppa do some and a large mint sauce. It was really lovely, the lamb was so tender and the sauce, thick and tasty. Delivered within the time slot by a friendly lady. Well done again gurkha, even though this is the first review I have took the time to write, me and my partner have eaten many meals here, I even had my 50th birthday here, there was lots of us and we were very well catered for. Some of my friends have even been converted from other restaurants. Special mention to the lovely Julie who works really hard taking shop and phone orders, it sometimes gets manic there, but she's always happy and charming. Maxine

Ordered a home delivery through Just Eat at 6.50pm with a delivery time of 7.35. This was then changed to 8.05pm.

Visited this restaurant on a Saturday night. The food is highly recommended. I had the gurkha lamb curry, have to say it was the best lamb curry I have had in a restaurant. The lamb was cooked perfectly and no fat on it at all. My fiance had one of the chicken curries which was also fantastic. Cannot fault the food at all. We had to wait a while for the main course as the restaurant was busy, but we were told of this before we ordered, the waiting staff were very attentive and apologetic about the wait. The only criticism I would have is the volume of the phones ringing. There were two to three phones at the bar almost constantly ringing with delivery orders, maybe these could be turned down a bit or the staff could wear earpieces as this was a quite distracting. Overall though, an amazing meal and great value. Will definitely be back.

My order was fairly basic, a couple of standard curries but I somehow ended up with extra items I hadn’t ordered. Not too much of an issue aside from the fact that it looks like I was charged for them.Lamb Bhuna, mostly oil & Fat, at least half a mug full, tasted like a generic curry, nothing to define it as specifically being a Bhuna.Butter Chicken, horrible fluorescent Red chicken Korma full of sugar.Restaurant was fairly empty when I visited.

Me and my wife who own and run a pub and restaurant looked for the highest rated Indian in clacton....we found this place....what a find and shows trip advisor works. The food was absolutely stunning, I think it was the best Indian meal I've ever had and my wife agreed. The service was great and friendly, timings were perfect. Can't say enough good things about the place. Can't wait to go back!!

A trip to flicks and stumbled along this Indian and wow it's amazing, better than the mogul in mannintree we loved it and the staff were a asset, definitely will be going back next week and it's great value too. Please go and try you will not be disappointed

We had starters, paneer and pakora which were really lovely and there was a nice amount of salad too! The main course was nice and portions were generous, we were full! It would be great if there was some background music as it's very quiet when not that busy. It would be great if there was more lighting outside too as we passed twice and Im sure others may miss this nice restaurant. The service was super and friendly and we enjoyed our visit.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion now we have used the service that was given to us by yourself which is proving food to the public at a cost and based on that which you offer we was not satisfy..let me point out the food was very late and to top it off our tummy hurts which I stated it's keeps our toilet busy sometimes these things happen in a food business.. Now you have our fist review removed because it's now what you wanted to hear.

Don't get me wrong, I love the internet, however when it takes control of a restaurant to the detriment of live customers, who make the effort to go out for a meal and try to give them some money, then somethings very wrong. In the case of the 'Great Gurkha' it would seem that 'Just Eat' takes priority over live customers. I base this on the conversations that were taking place whilst we were waiting. By far the best takeaway in Clacton.amazing food always comes piping hot and with free poppadoms and dip and if you spend a bit more free Bombay aloo .The chicken tikka pathia is so tasty the best pathia in town and I've tried them all!! The breads are spot on especially the stuffed paratha.

Recommend by our hotel manager. Was not disappointed. Food was lovely. Very friendly service. Toilets spotlessly clean. If ever we are in this area again we will definitely be dining at the great Gurkha.

we went to this indian sunday evening well iv been to many indian meals and by far this has been the best the taste and quality was amazing we was on holiday and am gutted i want get another one for long time i give more than 100 precent for this place the people where lovley to very welcoming wish they was in whitstable

I believe this restaurant has changed staff/ownership since my last visit a year ago, however the food is still excellently prepared, served and tastes great! Very reasonably priced with wine and soft drinks at or below average pub prices. I will certainly visit again

Five of us shared a variety of starters & mains, each very good in their own right. The one downside to our visit was the dining room was staffed with one person to answer the phone for take-out, greet and seat customers, wait tables, and collect cash for take-outs. On top of that the kitchen staff started a verbal fight with the waitrest, screamed at her, reduced her to tears, and generally cast an unpleasant pall over our meal! Recommendation... do not plan to dine in on a Wednesday.

Best Indian we have had in a long time. Chicken Taka Tak was really lovely. Great taste. Service was excellent. A immaculate setting very clean. With a lovely atmosphere. Brilliant night.

It is refreshing to taste Indian food that has so many delicate flavours whilst being nicely spicy. The banquet night is an absolute bargain. You can have all your food brought out together if you like, served sizzling hot from the trolley. Friendly service. Hugely recommended.

Relaxed Indian Restaurant serving really good food. The buffet menu is excellent value as are the various set menus. Can highly recommend giving them a try if you enjoy good Indian food

My partner and I enjoyed a very tasty meal on a Sunday evening which was banquet night. The banquet is great value for money. The staff were very friendly and helped me decide what to pick from the menu. I will certainly be returning and recommending this restaurant.

Lovely place. Food is delicious. The staff go above and beyond for their customers. I asked for a particular drink and because they didn't have what I wanted, the waiter went out to get it for me. Would recommend to anyone.
