Absolute gem. Great attention to detail in well curated small plates. Understated establishment where the food is forward. Wine and cocktail list superb. Service a terrific blend of friendly and professional. Not a touristy dining experience. Gourmand’s delight.

Me and my fiancee were travelling back from a long day exploring and searched for places to eat... we found this place and googled the reviews and everything looked good so we went in. After ordering some drinks we sat down. The Worthingtons I had was perfect to be fair... but that was the one and only positive about the whole experience. We were then given some dirty menus to look through while being entertained by a TV in the corner showing some show about farming. Looking through the really random choice of food, we decided on a chicken burger and some starters to share. We were then given some greasy cutlery and waited for about 10 minutes for the food. The burger roll was VERY stale. The duck spring rolls were so sloppy on the inside and very hard on the outside like they had been cooked a few times - the same situation with the deep fried haggis balls. While discovering all of this... we were still being entertained by the same farming show on the TV which had now started to show a scene of a cow giving birth... all round hilarious experience that cost us £30. I would avoid this "restaurant" and pop to tesco instead if hungry.

On the outside the Grapes Hotel looks very unassuming and like any regular village Hotel of its kind, but.....parked the car and went inside and we did get one big surprise. Yes its oldie worldy and thats one of the things that make this place special for us and probably many more. Small hotel but plenty of parking for the restaurant for those who are just popping in for a drink or a meal. At the moment its just changed to the winter months opening times for the bar which is around 5pm but if a guest they open the bar and they did just that for us when we arrived. Checked in and shown to our room. Yes the stairs can be a little steep but hand rails allow you to manage them and there is a landing between the floors. Key for the room and key for the outside door. The room itself was a good size even although the ceilings are low due to being in the roof space. We are quiet short people so no issue. En suite was a must for us and we had one. It was a twin room and clean and fresh enough. Bed comfy too and had a good nights sleep and the traffic didnt bother us at all from the A75. We sat in the beer garden to the back of the property in the lovely warm weather for September and had a glass or two of wine. Our stay was due to attending a hospital appointment the following day as we travelled 76.3 miles and can take 1hr 32 mins on the A75 but to ensure on time for 11am appointment we stopped overnight before and we will be using it again for the same purpose. Only 15mins to the hospital at Cargenbridge depending on traffic but arrived 30mins early which is good. Anyway a really good menu available and the special that night was Sirlion steak with chips and onion rings and we asked to hold the onion rings and could hubby have mushrooms instead and it was not any bother at all. To start I had the soup option and it was a choice of tomato(homemade) or chicken and mushroom so plumped for the tomato and it was beautifully flavoured and served with seeded bread and butter. It makes a change from just white (nice touch). Hubby had the Garlic mushrooms with salad and garlic mayo...tasty and just the right size of portion. Next the main course and I had difficulty choosing but went for the Fish and Chips and it was breaded instead of batter and again a nice change. Crispy fish with the chips and peas and only left a few chips as full up. The steak for hubby was asked for cooked Blue and although cooked rare to ensure that the steak was not cold in the middle it was beautifully cooked and very tasty and well worth the money served with chips and mushrooms. A glass of Merlot to wash it down with . I finished my meal with a glass of port. After dinner a few games of pool and a game or two of darts, drinks and then bed. Good music choice too. The inside is so cosy and homely and there are a good number of tables. Good nights sleep and breakfast at 9am and had been asked the night before whether we would want a cooked breakfast and we said yes please. Freshly cooked a sausage and bacon and black pudding and haggis and tattie scone and fried egg. Toast white and seeded and asked if we wanted more oh and a cooked tomato fresh from the greenhouse. Coffee and tea. Orange juice too. All in all a fantastic stay and fantastic meal and the best breakfast we have had in a hotel for a very very long time. Thanks Wilma and Fred .....See you soon .£69 for one night and breakfast included thats what we paid.

Went for lunch 12/06/19 on way home from hospital appointment. We arrived just as it opened for lunch at 12:30 but late if you ask me . Also please note this is in Springholm along the A75 towards Castle Douglas from Crocketford. You can't miss the place it's done out in purple. We were giving the lunch menu but only had sandwiches/toastes, soup and baked potato. But on website I had noticed hot meals so asked glad I did . Place looks lovely and clean . I asked and got a lovely mug of tea hate tiny wee cups of tea. The macaroni lovely quality cheese nice and creamy , chips and garlic bread ok . Wife had chicken, ham , leek bake again that was lovely . Definitely worth another visit.

Booked this B+B for the weekend, we were not expecting the weather to be brilliant hence why we booked a b+b that had a public house attached. From the minute we got here we were made to feel soooooooo welcome by Wilmar and Ian, it was like home from home. The bedroom was immaculately clean and bed was really comfortable. The breakfasts, sandwiches and Sunday lunch were yummy. It is not a massive public house but this makes the experience even better as you get to know all the locals who are lovley, I was taught how to play domino's and even had a game of bingo. Loved every minute. Wilmar and Ian are fantastic hosts and we can't wait to re-visit we feel like we were made to feel like part of the family. "see ya soon" 😁. Thanks for a brill weekend 👍

We decided to have lunch here, after an absence of some two years. Unfortunately, the new management have not continued with the excellent service and quality of food provided by the previous owners. On asking for a gluten free menu, my request was met with a blank stare and was offered the salad or macaroni cheese. I was encouraged by this and asked "you have gluten free pasta?" This turned out to be not the case. I decided to go for the safe option and ordered a cheese and pineapple salad which was perfectly fine but disappointing in respect of the choice available. One of our party ordered sweet and sour chicken and was given, what appeared to be, chicken gougons a with helping of rice and a small bowl of sauce. Also, very disappointing. There was a notice on the wall re allergens but I fear there is not enough knowledge in the owners to provide safe and accurate information. Clearly they are not aware of the dangers which, nowadays, is quite shocking. Obviously, we will not be returning to a once favourite eatery.

10 of us (4 adults & 6 kids) turned up unexpectedly on route home from camping trip & were immediately welcomed in by landlord. Once we ordered the food came quickly considering there was 10 of us......10 mins later there was 10 empty plates. 10 mains, 4 kids desserts, 2 adults desserts & 10 drinks came to £82 due to kids eat free deal. Definitely a stop off next time we pass. Great food and great value.

First of all, The Grapes is in Springholm, not Crocketford. We were recommended to visit and we were not disappointed. Yes its a old building, but is full of charm and is clean. Our meals were fantastic, great portion size, all good home cooking and piping hot. There were 5 of us, 4 had 2 courses and 1 person had one course. We had intended to have free, however, we didn't have the room. The price was just under £70 and we had 2 alcohol drinks and 7 soft drink. Really lovely welcome as we arrived earlier than intended, and we presume the owner and waitress were both lovely. We are already planning our next visit. We can't wait :)

The sat nav told us we would miss the boat by one minute. So the stopped here for evening meal whilst waiting on the later boat. When we went in only the owner was present. He told us that food was not normally served for 30 mins. As we had time to spare no rush. The food was warm and in the end served reasonably quickly. Overall it was tasty and more importantly cook fresh. This is the second time I hav estopped here and will do again.

Service 5* Value 4* Food 3* Cleanliness 5* Atmosphere 5* Decor 2* We passed this place a while ago and I thought of it when we fancied lunch out today. The outside is very tatty, but the bar is fine, with a real fire adding to the warmth of the welcome from the staff. As we were the only ones in (late Sat afternoon) and I couldn't face fighting with the TV blaring in the corner she was happy to switch it off - much appreciated. There's a good menu choice - think Scottish pub food, with steaks, burgers, chilli, curry etc. There were minor issues with all of my courses (hard bits of haggis in starter, very salty chicken pie for main, no caramel taste in caramel apple pie). I ended up leaving quite a bit. However on the plus side the chips were lovely and crisp, the custard was super tasty, and my husband cleared his plate every time. Maybe I was just unlucky. £25/head for a 3 course meal, soft drinks/coffees and tip seemed good value. If this place was my local I'd be really happy, but it's nowhere near the destination restaurant suggested by its 5* average TA rating.

David and Janet were absolute legends. They welcomed me and my boyfriend fresh off our bikes after a 45 mile cycle ride. Darren was thrilled to learn that he would indeed be able to watch his favourite team play football via a wi-fi connection. Even when our laptop died, David fired up his and let us watch the game while ours charged. We had the steak and ale pie and gammon and both plates were delicious. The portion sizes were very generous and reasonable price-wise. We were impressed by the extent of their menu. Great beer and a very refreshing New Zealand cider also proved inexpensive. Thanks again guys! A 5* place.

There aren't many places to eat between Cairnryan and Carlisle so this was a shot in the dark. And it's not at all bad. It's a scruffy, homely pub where you can feel at ease. Kids are welcome (eat free at least sometimes, maybe always). Dogs are also welcome. The food was ok but nothing more. I should have known better than to order lamb shank - rarely is it as hot in the middle as it should be but it was fine. My daughter's chicken in garlic sauce was seriously garlicky.Haute quisine, it isn't, but it does fill a gap well.

Subconsciously registered 'The Grapes' as we passed through en route to a wedding near Castle Douglas. On the Sunday evening, none of the family fancied cooking in our rented accommodation, and as we had not eaten a proper meal all day, it was a toss-up between an on spec visit to 'The Grapes' or the chippie in Castle Douglas.Fortunately, 'The Grapes' won by a majority vote. (Dissenting voice from a 3-year old who would live on chips if his mum allowed it. We ignored him).As other reviewers have commented, the owner David and his staff are informative, enthusiastic and can cook good food. As a party of 6, we sat in the restaurant and were able to choose from a fairly comprehensive menu. David was apologetic that the Sunday roast had sold out at lunch-time, and if it was to a similar standard to the food we received, I can quite see why.Being new to the area, David was able to point out places of interest and even recommended places to stay on our next visit. The bill was not expensive for the size and quality of the meals, and we were the last to leave. Now if David can organise a spot of July sunshine, we will keep our promise to go back.P.S. In case you were worried, the little fellah did get his chips...and ice-cream, his second favourite.

Really warm welcome here at this family run pub. We chose to eat in the bar and enjoyed a great meal with lots of choices ( don't know how they keep this up). I am usually suspicious of restaurants with huge menus but The Grapes manage to deliver variety, quality and massive portions. We last ate there on Halloween weekend and the decorations were a bit OTT and I prefer the less over stated Christmas décor ! People in D&G are missing a trick not visiting Springholm and giving The Grapes a try. (There is a pre 5pm offer of main courses at £5 ish)PS. Grandson very impressed with the ultra pink ice cream sauce!

Myself and two friends visited the Grapes at Springholm last week on the way back from visiting my wife at Dumfries hospital. We arrived about 8.45pm and asked if it were possible to still get a meal? We were told that they had stopped serving and ovens had been switched off, but he would check to see if they could be put back on for us. A couple of minutes later we were told they could do a meal and we were asked if we wanted to go through to the dining room. Very impressed with the size and variety of the menu particularly as this is not a large venue. We all settled on the chicken and leek pie a wise choice as it proved to be an excellent meal. Veg were fresh, well cooked and the sauce in the pie to die for! Throughout our meal the proprietor a David McNally was attentive and exceptionally pleasant and when I explained about visiting my wife he said any time we wanted a meal later than their normal cooking times to ring and he would keep the kitchen open for us. That is what I call service.
