You would expect nothing less than a pub to be busy on a Saturday afternoon so why was there only one person serving when a friend and I visited? Perhaps the reason is that, if you are a regular, all you have to do is to stroll up to the bar, indicate how many pints you wish to purchase by holding up the requisite number of fingers and you will get served very quickly despite the fact that others have been waiting much longer than you. It was also rather chaotic in that we witnessed a member of staff wandering around for quite a few minutes with two platefuls of food; he was clearly unaware of the table to which the meals had to be taken to - by the time he found the customers the food must have been cold. Prices are good and the one lady behind the bar was very friendly and doing her best but I didn't think the quality of the drinks was very good. My friend and I were thinking about having a second drink but when we realised there was something like 20+ people at the bar and only one barperson we decided that elsewhere deserved our custom.

Just a couple of drinks at the Goose, I was on Amstel a pint £2.70 , don't know whether it was alcoholic enough for me might avoid it next time perhaps, we stayed a while, a large pub, not been in here before, huge pub, traditional sort of place, take a look at those amazing ceiling lights, the screens were showing a football game Southampton v Man City, I was disappointed that no good music was playing it was Saturday night, need some good music on every night of the week, all you could hear was people talking, the tables were a bit cluttered for too long with other peoples old drinks and plates, not taken away quick enough, when I was sitting down at a table, the bar girl seemed oblivious of where she was sticking her bottom, I presume she was oblivious, there is a menu, you can get food here also, I suppose the pub seems an older style inside. Overall it was ok, but not great, there is a pool table also. It seems to attract students and an older patronage also, various ages overall. Drinking at the Goose.

I love the goose, it's a proper cheap pub and have been coming here for my two uni years. Although now it's trying to change its image for the worse! Awful 'cocktails' which are not cheap and staff have had no training in it yet, tacky inspirational quotes dotted around the beer garden and in the ladies and now they are deciding to paint the walls lilac and paint things brightly coloured to try and go more 'classy' or funky. It isn't working! It just looks messy and confused. The goose is proud to be the classic local, don't make it something it's not. Bring back the 241 on pina colada in a carton!

We watched burgers and fried breakfasts coming out of the kitchen which all looked good, so we were hopeful that our cooked meal would be equally tasty. The menu offered a choice of beef, turkey or half a roast chicken. However, we were told that only turkey was available. We should have taken this as a warning...After waiting 30 minutes, the food arrived and it looked ok but that's about where the pleasure ended. Each plate only contained two small slices of turkey roll (certainly not comparable to half a roast chicken). The mash and yorkshire pudding were ok but the peas were tasteless, the roast potatoes were dry in the middle and the carrot batons were barely cooked. I'm not one to complain but in this instance (and at £6.79 each; a great deal more than charged by many high street carveries) I had to comment on the carrots being poor, so our plates were taken away to have the meal replaced. After about 10 minutes our original meals were returned with a top-up of gravy but with the carrots still uncooked. I run a food business myself and they tasted as if they had been cooked from frozen in a microwave, and could only be described as 'wet and spongy'.We ate what we could of the meal, leaving the carrots and peas and made a speedy exit. WIth the boast that "We have a fantastic menu, packed full of delicious dishes which will cater to your every need." I think the owner should randomly sample some of these dishes to ensure quality is maintained. Eating at the Goose at the OVT was definitely NOT a good start to 2017 for us.

I love everything about the place. It feels just like your living room. Cheapest pint in Selly and the atmosphere in the place is always warmer and more friendly than other pubs in the area. This is due to the staff, the crowd and the decor. It feels like a proper pub rather than like you're sitting in an ikea show room (Pear/S'oak). I frequently visit this pub with friends and i love it. Some may be put off by the 'old man' feel, especially in the mornings when most of the customers are made up of old regulars watching the horse racing. But pop in during the evening and the pub is brought to life. With live music events, a pub quiz, and good value food and drink it has a great atmosphere. But even better are the staff. I often go to pubs and bars where the staff never have a smile on their face and don't really interact with customers at all. At the Goose the staff are always in a good mood, know most of the regulars (old men and students alike) by their names, and are always up for a joke and good conversation. When they aren't too busy of course! Well worth a visit!

The overall feeling is that the place could do with a good clean! We did order lunch & both had the £7.49 Steak, chips, onion rings, peas & grilled tomato which was really nice. My partner had the curly fries instead of chips & they were lovely. The food was excellent really the dessert was extremely tasty too. Condiments were served in a card beer holder which didn't seem very hygienic. The food was served fast & arrived very hot. It’s worth a visit if only to look at the unusual Victorian ceramic murals on the wall. Especially eye-catching is the Baccus-like figure with the Latin inscription to the left of the main door. Then from there on it tends to go a bit downhill. On the plus side the pub is clearly well kept, and the range of real ales look extremely tempting. Regretfully I was driving and couldn’t try them – perhaps worth a return visit, but only after I’ve eaten first. There’s a beer garden of sorts at the back, that seemed to be populated by smoking students. The food…my wife had the mixed grill, which was large enough, but the chicken breast and the steak had clearly languished overlong on the grill, and appeared as dry shrivelled burnt offerings. The chips were out of a packet – I’m always amazed how restauranteurs seem to think we can’t tell the difference. My meat pie was okay but nothing to return for; the filling had that mucus-like appearance of the ingredients inside cheap meat pies. But maybe we’re being a tad unfair. The meal prices were not extravagant, Selly Oak is largely a student suburb, and the pub is surrounded by cheap eateries. It is a large pub and I imagine to survive they need to cater to the students, so quantity and price were the determinants, not quality. Having a full belly and a few beers as cheaply as possible was my aim when I was a student many years ago.

This was without doubt the worst meal I’ve eaten in a long time. I was staying at the university so I went up the Bristol Road to find something to eat. The Goose looked OK from the outside. Inside it proclaimed ‘real pub, real food, real ale’. I had a decent pint of Marstons Pedigree while I waited for my food order to arrive. I ordered the Nachos and a baked potato. The pub was lively enough with plenty of students in, though I noticed few were eating. The carpet was filthy. The Nachos was a bowlful of tortilla chips with meagre amounts of cheese, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and jalapeños. This was Ok apart from the overwhelming ratio of tortillas to the rest, and the overall portion size being too small. I turned my attention to the baked potato I had ordered. This was a small spud backed up by a nasty side salad of lettuce leaf with sliced cabbage stalks. The coleslaw filling was barely present. As I cut into the spud, I could see there was something wrong. The flesh was 50 shades of grey with a distinct black area. I beckoned the waitress who took the plate away. I ordered a pint of Mad Goose Purity Pale Ale to keep me occupied until a replacement meal arrived. The nasty side salad was unchanged, with the dollop of mayonnaise I had already added. This time, the spud was a similar size and there was no more coleslaw, but I was relieved to see that the flesh was a creamy yellow. I was hungry so I ate the spud and much of the lettuce. I was still hungry but I did not want to order more food here and went elsewhere. So, in summary I’ve rated this place as poor rather than terrible – because there was real ale and it was drinkable – but I would never go back to eat there.

This used to be a great pub but ever since Stonegate took over it has gone downhill. The ever changing staff are rude and inattentive and are more interested in chatting with each other. it seems this place doesn't like locals as they are more focused on student trade. Can't comment on the food but when I have been in there there have been plenty of half full plates of food left on tables - that speaks volumes. Beer ok ish but real ales over priced. This used to be one of the cheapest pubs in England! Shame, this place has so much potential - a big dance hall upstairs and a basement none of them used.

Saturday night foray for the two meals for £8.45 (was a couple of pounds cheaper until recently). Had Cheese and Bacon Burger with Chips. Pint of Timothy Taylor Boltmaker at £3.35 was glorious.Students all gone home so much quieter. Staff efficient and friendly.

Working near the place now, so thought I'd try it as I've eaten all round selly oak apart from in here.. and I won't be eating here again, nearly 5 pounds for a jacket potato with chilli and cheese which when it came out looked like a new potato minus the cheese and with no exaggeration 2 table spoons of chilli :( I never had chance to ask because the waitress dashed off very quickly. With the competition they have in the area for food, I can't see much revenue coming in to this place from food if that's the effort of a quiet lunch time :( won't go back

2人で頼むとお得なメニューがあります。ハンバーガーセットとかですね。普通にダラダラ飲むなら、近所にもっといいパブあります。ここは入り口から入って、中を抜けると外の席があるので、喫煙者とかがいると便利かも。

I can only believe that this commercial enterprise has been established by an anti-capitalist militant or prohibitionist intent on proving that Capitalism just doesn't work and alcohol is evil, it is la lovely old building albeit unsympathetically renovated, located in a prime position with potential for business from locals and students. NOTHING about this place works well, except the darkness that allows the regulars to slip their own spirits into their soft drinks. None of the staff seem located in this time zone or on this planet, customers seem to be a mere irritant distracting their attention away from the giant TV screens that dominate the place. The British Boozer is an endangered species, and I felt sorry for the student tourists from other countries who popped in to explore the place only to find they could not escape and ended up overstaying their VISAs as they had stuck to the tables, chairs and carpets. I wouldn't dare to eat here, and had to send back two chipped glasses for fear of catching gingivitis. This could be a great place, selling Englishness back to the tourists, providing a music venue and providing a haven for the few locals left in the transient world that is Selly Oak. What a waste.

Had to wait an hour for mains, in which time 4 parties had arrived, ordered and ate. Chicken skewer bone dry. No reimbursement offered. It's the best Selly Oak has to offer but we'll avoid in the future. It's a shame as the food could be decent and it's cheap.

We popped in for lunch on a Sunday. The menu was pretty pub standard, but with a wide range, suiting most tastes. One little thing that impressed me was that the beer taps had the prices on, so no surprises. The pub sits in the middle of studentville, so I guess that's why. I wish more pubs did it. Food was, again, decent pub food, served fairly promptly. Staff were all very helpful. There was soccer on the screens around, if that's your thing, and easy to ignore if it isn't. I'll go back next time I'm in Selly Oak.

Was glad to see Molloys open again after such a long time. We went in and could smell the odour of damp and saw the ceiling and walls with mould stains. The floor is dirty and the place hasn't been given a helping hand since it was shut. The place doesn't do food now. We stopped for a quick pint although no idea of a good.pint no head and smelt like cleaning fluid. Such a shame the place wasn't inspected or at least cleaned before opening.

Sat at a table and one of the chefs bashed into my table spilling my newly bought drink. The manager (walking two seconds behind her) then decided to bring me beer mats because "your table is a bit of a mess. I hope you appreciate the fact I bought these over for you" I then ordered a small breakfast. Whilst eating it I was interrupted by a member of staff sweeping under my table whilst I was eating. She even bashed my foot with the broom whilst I was eating. That food on the floor was there before I arrived. I felt extremely embarrassed by the fact that I was being victimized just because a member of staff had walked into my table and I was blamed for it, and that I could not eat my meal in peace (no where else would interrupt a guest's meal in this way) I have added a photo of one of the pieces of (not my) food, that the memeber of staff was trying to get from under my feet as I was eating.

Last week dinner service was terrible, the waitress could hardly speak a word of English and got my order all wrong and then didn’t understand why! She asked me 3 times what wine I would like and still brought the wrong one. Tables are always sticky. Last night service was a bit better but I knocked my fork on the floor when the waiter was right there yet he didn’t pick it up or being me another one. This morning, last weeks waitress is on, table extremely sticky and again she didn’t understand what my order was so goodness knows what I’ll get. Oh had the meal deal but had to pay for the additional chicken on the noodles. That’s unfair I think, who is going to order just a bowl of noodles and no protein?

Excellent food cooked by Liz as always! Excellent and welcoming service from Becky N, Seriously recommend their Surf and Turf and new flatbreads! Also a great selection of Gluten Free choices. Congratulations to Amy on your new role, it’s great to be back :)

The main issue, is the service from front of staff on a Friday, as this is the day i generally visit. You can stand waiting to be acknowledged for over a minute while they continue doing what they are doing before they have look up and ask you what you want. Food is generally very good apart from the bacon, in the bee fast which always appears it’s been cooked on a dirty plate After three visits having the same poor service I will not be visiting this establishment again.
