We enjoyed a coffee in the lounge on Saturday and highly recommend popping in just for that. Comfortable armchairs, fire and cosy comfortable feel. Decided to try the Sunday lunch and cannot recommend it highly enough. The roast beef was sirloin when so often it's topside. Fabulous service from all the staff. Will return.

We went here for our annual family Christmas meal/meet up and this is the best restaurant we have been to. The customer service was exceptional and the food was exquisite. It was well worth the money. It was so good I opted for a three course meal, rather than two. We all really enjoyed it and it had a lovely atmosphere and ambience. I would definitely recommend visiting and treating yourself. Only recommendation would be to add a child's menu or option of smaller portions for children.

Popped in for a drink with friends but stayed to eat (in bar as dogs not allowed in George restaurant). Food was excellent. Scallops perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, steak, tender, tasty and again perfectly cooked (rare). Chicken lovely and moist, dauphinoise superb. Barbary duck also excellent and perfectly cooked pink. Wine was excellent, staff/ owner very friendly, helpful and service excellent. A little bit pricy but the quality of the food & cooking justified the price. Ignore all reviews prior to Nov 23 as it is now under new ownership and is being transformed into a great asset to Oakham.

We wanted to try something different for Saturday lunch with friends so came here to The George, had a drink in the bar then lunch in the restaurant. We all just had a main course but it was enjoyed by all. My cod wrapped in Parma ham was very tasty and the chicken and steak equally well received. Service was friendly if a little slow but overall it was a fine lunch. Great quality and presentation of the food. I look forward to our next visit.

The once lovely food , has gone extremely down hill. Dried up bread , limp slimy lettuce. When mention it felt we were dismissed . Empty lounge area but still had to shout to get attention, thereafter sat listening to staff using expletives whilst we waited rather a substantial time for our disappointing food . Will not be back shame really .

I live in town anyway, but I was out and about doing some errands and, on realising the time, wanted somewhere to eat for lunch. I have not been in The George (since it changed from the Whipper-in) so decided to try there - at nearly 1.50pm it was heading towards the end of their lunch service, so was not sure if they would still be taking fresh orders. The man behind the bar was very friendly and accommodating. I chose the Caesar Salad (from the starters) and asked if it could be made as a main meal instead. Yes, no problem at all, and with just a small increase in price as to be expected. I also ordered a small glass of rose wine, and a glass of water with it being so lovely and hot at the time. I chose to eat outside in their courtyard garden. My food arrived in a timely manner - and my goodness, it was huge!! Lots of chicken and anchovies, plenty of leaves, croutons and lovely toasted, flaked parmesan cheese ... it all looked (and tasted) amazing!! I also had a dessert - Eton Mess, which came presented on a plate - not how I had envisaged it, being artistically deconstructed as it were ... but absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend The George in Oakham for lunch (or an evening meal). With great food - fairly priced, and friendly, warm, welcoming, obliging staff ... What's not to love? I for one, will definitely be back soon!!

We decided to go out for a meal last Saturday evening, and found most of the restaurants very very busy (which can only be a good thing). We thought about the Whipper-In, and there was quite a good menu advertised outside. Looking through the window there was only one couple with a child eating in the lounge, nobody in the restaurant. Bearing in mind this is a Saturday evening at around 7.50 pm. We went into the reception and rang the bell. Waited for 10 mins, and nobody arrived, so we went out. We had a very nice meal elsewhere, which was not quite as busy as the others we had looked at. The Whipper-In is really missing a trick here - do they want business or not?! They dont seem to do anything to attract people. I remeber when I was a teen the now restaurant was called The George bar and was absolutely heaving at a weekend, people couldn't get in! I suggest the Whipper gets rid of the restaurant, as nobody goes there. Get it back to a bar and do happy hours, 2 drinks and a free shot, anything like this to get the drinkers back in as they sadly dont seem to want people to dine there. They need to encourage people to get back in there with offers etc, and once people start to go, the friends will follow. Come on Whipper - buck your ideas up and start to attract customers!!

Only sliced bread available at Dinner and Chef wouldn’t part with a nann bread as I wasn’t having curry. The Manager passed through the restaurant a couple of times more concerned by the whereabouts of “my scissors” than acknowledging the dining guests. Food was ok, battered fish looked anaemic but just cooked. Didn’t feel welcome, just taken for granted.

Having booked on 9 December and chosen menus for a festive lunch on Tuesday 12 December we arrived at the appointed time. After waiting for 10 minutes we were shown to a table in the bar area. We were the only diners. We are four elderly ladies. Aged 81 - 90. We had to negotiate steps and electrical cable to get to our table. There were no signs of any "festive" decoration. When our starters arrived, Thai fishcakes, there was only one on a bed of salad and a blob of mayonnaise, they had obviously been reheated in not very good oil and left an unpleasant taste in the mouth. One mouthful was enough. To enhance the dining experience we were treated to workmen drilling a few feet from us. It was all too much and we spoke to the chef/manager and receptionist. They were full of apologies and explained that until we arrived they did not know we were coming; this despite the reservation being entered on Saturday and the chosen menus discussed. The whole experience was a complete disaster - and not the first at the same venue although we had been told it was under new management and had improved. Sadly this was not our experience - nul points.

The young lady who served us I thought was the cleaner, I would recommend that the staff from here should be sent to another hotel too see how the job should be done. I will neither recommend or use this hotel again and my gift experience which included Champagne which we did not get was a complete waste of money for the person who bought it for us. I have to say the Hotel is very quaint and looks great from the outside however if you look closer for example at the toilet doors, badly marked the general decor is a sign of a poorly run facility.

Four stars for the tasty food and friendly staff. But our meal would have been a lot nicer if there had been a decent red wine on the wine list. Instead they are all 'pub wines' - we chose the priciest (Woodbridge Cab Sauv, a budget Californian) and it was still not pleasant - if anything it detracted from the meal. This is disappointing when there are many places the restaurant could buy cheap yet decent wine in Oakham. There's a very reasonable wine shop practically next door! Also - what kind of restaurant gives you 3 tiny sachets of generic tomato sauce when you ask for condiments? This is a restaurant, not Burger King! I felt this was rather depressong - as though someone is counting every penny. So - a mixed experience. With a few tweaks this place could be getting top notch reviews. But you get the feeling someone somewhere just doesn't care about it quite enough. Which is a shame.

I called at the "Whipper-in" lunch today (20/02/2017), because the last time I visited I had an enjoyable three night stay.Because it was 1-40 pm when I arrived I asked at reception if lunch was still available and was told "yes". My lunch arrived and was quite enjoyable, the waiter was friendly and every-thing seemed fine. However, when I attempted to order dessert, I was told it was too late because the chef had gone home! The waiter apologised and was obviously concerned. He said he probably couldn't deal with it, I don't blame him, although what I wanted was probably in a fridge somewhere and only needed a knife to cut off a slice.I went to reception to pay my bill and when asked if everything was okay, I explained about the dessert and the disappeared chef. The receptionist also apologised and offered to serve it herself. But, my desire for a dessert had passed.I find it difficult to comprehend that the chef can just disappear knowing that at least one costumer (his source of income) was still in the restaurant. Could he not have enquired if I wanted anything else?!!Does costumer care only apply to"front of house?!"It is such a shame, the hotel staff are always friendly and helpful, the hotel is full of atmosphere, well kept, superbly located and should be a goldmine.I wondered when I went why there were no other customers in the restaurant, perhaps I have found the reason why!

Went yesterday and were shown to a table in the bar area, really gloomy and dark on a miserable winters day. Expected delicate little sandwiches, delicious cakes, plain scones and hot tea. Got wedges for sandwiches which were not all that fresh, horrid scones with sultanas in that were more like tasteless biscuits and rather stale cake. Our tea soon got cold and we were not offered any hot water, in fact we were pretty much left to our own devices. When we left, the guy at reception was busy talking to his mate and only thought to say goodbye as were out of the door. Really disappointing tea and service.

We went to The Market Café for dinner, not realising it was part of The George restaurant - separate entrances etc. We realised only when we sat down and were presented with George Restaurant menus. My wife pointed it out to the young waiter, who said 'I've only been here a few weeks', that the prices on the identical menu were more expensive than those on the wall outside the Market Café.He went outside, came back said he had no explanation but would find out. On his return he said it was an old menu but they would honour the lower prices. My wife's chicken breast in leeks and cream was 'OK' my liver and bacon had overcooked liver which verged on toughness. The sauté potatoes accompanying the chicken breasts and the lyonnais potatoes accompanying the liver were in both cases substituted with baby new potatoes, without explanation.During the meal the two extra place-settings at our table for four were never removed, and the menus left lying on the table for the entire meal, the white wine was brought to the table but not poured for us, and not supplied with a cool bucket.I do not blame our two young waiters who were both pleasant and keen, but had obviously never received any training.48 hours later the old menu was still on the wall outside.

I was recently given a lovely gift for a special birthday which was a champagne afternoon tea for two. There was a choice of places to go but having previously stayed at this hotel and loving the area I chose here. We pre- booked three weeks in advance and was really looking forward to it. The waiter was very pleasant and accommodating as we were early, but he sat us at a reserved table and brought us our champagne. Within no more than 3 minutes he presented our food. Clearly pre- prepared the sandwiches were made with cheap white bread, and fillings were cheese and branston, salmon and cream cheese and ham with mustard. No choice, butter whether you wanted it or not, and let's just say the presentation was like someone was rushing and decided it was OK to cut the sandwiches like you would for a pack up!! My husband doesn't like pickle or mustard so went hungry! I purchased crisps to make it more exciting! The cake was better but simply Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle and of course scones, jam & cream. Coffee arrived and it was just warm but by this point we just wanted to leave. This experience cost my friend £50 and quite frankly if I'd had to pay for it I would have been speaking to the manager! It was by far the worst afternoon tea I have ever had and I was so disappointed we had travelled so far for it! It should be fresh and we'll presented with customers being given the opportunity to tell you what they do not like so the food can at least be eaten.

We were in Oakham just for one night, after a very busy day. We had walked the length of the vilage in search of a resaurant that a) wasn't packed, and b) might serve something tasty and diferent. We were extrememly glad that so many other places were full, because we ended up, almost in desperation, in the bar area of the George/Whipper-In. The bar itself is small, with just a few tables. In contrast with the rest of the decor of the building it is modern and bright, with a very simple, modern and bold flower decoration on the tables.. Our fab Swedish hostess (she and her husband are new to the hotel) made us welcome and gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu whilst ensuring that our throats were not dry.Our meals were superb, using fresh ingredients, beautifully put together in combnations that you wouldn't ordinarily find in a rural English pub; my slow cooked pork (recomended in chatting with another diner), featured excelent crackling, paired with pureed parsnip and mashed sweet potoato. Delicious. Our portions were just right (not 'nouvelle' but not so hearty that you can't face the thought of desert). We chose a cheeseboard that featured local cheeses (including a lovely Stilton) with cold poached grapes and a fig chutney, both made on site. Utterly delicious and presented beautifully.Having met the chef, Brenton, it's clear that this young man is passionate about food, and it shows.I can see no reason for us to find ourselves in Oakham again, but if we were, I would book a table at the bar for dinner, well in advance and the reasons that this isn't a five star review is that the tables are a little cramped and the selection of beers was not very great. Other than that, great stuff.

All the food I think is freshly cooked/ 'homemade'. My husband had the fishcake starter and slowly cooked beef and I had chicken liver starter and four hour cooked pork, all very good. The service was also good though we were a little disappointed that nobody acknowledged us as we were leaving ie a thank you or goodnight etc. Overall we were pleased with our meal at the restaurant.

My daughter and I visited for lunch during the school holidays. We were presented with two menus, neither of which was clearly marked as a 'lunch' or 'dinner' menu, plus a kids menu (a pet hate, but that's by the by...).I felt that most of the dishes were overpriced, so opted for lower-priced options. The Asian Noodle Box (£4.95) and a chicken, bacon and brie panini (£6.95).The noodles were awful. Undercooked and lacking the coriander, spring onion and beansprouts on the menu. But it did contain huge chunks of stewed carrot and loads of green beans. The 'mixed salad garnishj' with the panini was a few scraps of rocket, iceberg and other leaves. Not even a slice of tomato or cucumber - and no dressing. The iceberg had clearly been hanging around as the edges were all brown.Afterwards I complained about all the above and the manager (I think) told me that lettuce was definitely cut fresh today and had come from the market outside. Even confronted with the evidence he stuck to his guns, but did go to speak to the chef.He returned, but only to concede that the lettuce should not be brown around the edges. He said the noodles were supposed to be 'al dente'. He said that, "as with all noodles, they can't be cooked badly".He did knock the price of our drinks (two Cokes) off the bill, but frankly he should have let us have it for free out of shame. The red onion, mushrooms and mixed peppers looked - and tasted - suspiciously like they had come pre-sliced in a bag, but he assures me everything is freshly prepared...

We booked a table for six in the restaurant for lunch but when we arrived we were put in the Bistro, which was like a cheap cafe, as we were the only party to book for the restaurant..Some of the food was a joke and the rest was pretty poor for the prices charged.I must say the staff tried their best.We shall definitely not be returning.2 course meal £20.
