The George Inn in West Dorset

We stopped off here for a lunch, and was welcomed by friendly staff. We had bacon and brie rolls that were so good, the bacon was nice and crispy, a delight. We will be back.

Our escape from heavy rain today, turned into our lunchtime venue & all 3 of us were v happy. One small adverse comment, my otherwise good turkey curry & rice - the curry had been over salted. But, I generally avoid adding salt to anything - except of course chips! The fish n chips were excellent.

Amazing food, friendly staff, a great place for lunch after walking along Hive beach. Dog friendly which was lovely, they even got them a water bowl. Would recommend a visit anytime.

The beer was excellent. However the food was bland very bland and overcooked. The choice was poor and it was like sitting in an undertakers waiting room

Had very disappointing meal here last Saturday evening. We were told we could only go at 6.45 but when we arrived there was no one in the place. Real lack of atmosphere and quite chilly that evening. Service started well but then we had to chase to get served and get the bill. Food also very average - cold potatoes with the special rainbow trout. We’ve eaten here every year we’ve been on holiday for last 8 years but not sure we want to return now.

What a beautiful, charming place this is. The landlord/owner s friendly, polite and welcoming. Food absolutely amazing. We’ll definitely be back although it’s likely to be new owners when that happens. They’ve got A LOT to live up to!!

Had dinner with 3 friends - one of the best meals I’ve had recently. Excellent service too. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

This place lacks atmosphere and warmth. Ordered 2 children's ham, egg and chips. Chips were overdone but whoever cooked the eggs really needs to learn how to do it properly, they had been placed into hot fat, burning all the edges and underneath, also were really greasy, first visit and will not be returning.

had dinner here Tuesday 2 July. a very nice looking pub with great tasting food. I had the dbv burger and affogato and I did not want either to end. sadly they did, but I would more than happily recommend this place.

I called to see if they had a table for two at 730 last night. I was told they could squeeze us in but they were very busy and we’d ‘have to bear with them’ as there were only two of them on. I was a little put off but figured how bad can it be? We arrived ten minutes late having taken a wrong turn as we are just visiting the area and, after apologizing, were told by the charmless girl at the bar that we’d have to order straight away as ‘it’s now 745 and the kitchen closes at 8’! I wish she’d told me that on the phone as we would probably have tried somewhere else. We were shown to our seat in the quiet dining area, where there was only one other table eating, and ordered promptly, as requested. The food came out in about 15 minutes. I had ordered their DBV burger (sadly frozen, not fresh, for £18) which was strangely gamey tasting and served on a hard and cold-from-the-chiller pretzel bun. The chips were the scrapings from the bottom of the fryer . I suppose they couldn’t be bothered to make a fresh batch as ‘the kitchen closes at 8’. The menu is clearly designed to be prepared by someone with no culinary training. All frozen offerings , microwaveable, or simple assembly dishes like ploughmans or my partners salmon carpaccio, which he said was pretty good (£22). We had a bottle of French rose (£26) which was barely chilled and played dominoes supplied by the pub, which turned out to be the best thing about this place. I’m sure Dorset is full of lovely pubs serving fresh, locally produced food but this isn’t one of them. Overpriced and below par food. One to avoid if visiting the area.

Busy pub, by plenty of seating. I was allocated my own table, The food was very good and served quickly. Chideock has a lot of history so is worthy of a post meal walk.

Disappointing. This pub has such potential but everything was just slightly lacking. The welcome was not warm, the ambiance was also on the cool side and the food was average.

I booked a table for me and my wife and 2dogs we were greeted by Sophie who was extremely polite and friendly throughout our visit and she made us feel very comfortable and welcomed and the food was absolutely outstanding I had the steak and my wife had the chicken bacon and leek pie and the steak was cooked to perfection and it melted in my mouth it was the best steak I have ever eaten and the pie was amazing as well I would like to thank the chef very much for the best meals for a long time. Went for New Years Eve. We were squeezed in with a four legged friend at late notice. Service was fantastic straight away and throughout the evening when they were very busy. We had the fish and the duck. Both were exceptional and I have to say one of the best Duck dishes I’ve tasted. Was all very well and reasonably priced, and finished off with some brilliant live music. A great way to spend New Years. Thank you!

After driving past this pub for many years we decided to stop off for a drink and hoping the kitchen was serving food as it was late in the afternoon and most pubs enroute home were closed. Well what can we say other than amazing ! The charm of old inn , the amazing hospitality together with sumptuous dishes and good local beer meant we will most definitely be returning! Support your local pubs and breweries, again Palmers of Bridport do the simple things and make sure guests are happy! Well done to the manager and kitchen staff !

It's several years since we were last the The George and the atmosphere and food were great then. This visit showed many changes - not least in the menu - but food and service were as good as ever. The menu had a great range of choices, the prices reasonable and the staff friendly. It wasn't a busy night but quiet is good. We will certainly return.

Visited here yet again and wasn’t disappointed. We have been coming here for at least 10years pre, during and post COVID. And can honestly say everything is excellent. Food, welcome, atmosphere and venue. It is clean and welcoming and good to be back

Excellent service and food, and Coeliacs well catered for. We booked here for dinner after seeing the good reviews on a Gluten Free website. Exceeded expectation - the staff were welcoming and very knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients. The food was delicious and varied with a great choice and the service was first class. I can't recommend The George highly enough. We will be definitely be returning next time we are in the area!

What's happened? We made a point to visit this pub on its pizza evening as we had always enjoyed these in the past (previously stayed twice in holiday cottages in Chideock). We were early but prepared to have a drink & wait awhile for pizza oven to be fired up. Very soon we were told we could order and ready to go (being about 45 minutes earlier than expected) but hey ho we ordered & they arrived very quickly. Well what rubbish? The bases used to be very thin & stone baked, these were like cardboard the toppings were bland & not evenily scattered. £54 later 2 x drinks each, a bowl of olives & 2 poor pizzas we left very disappointed. Money I think could have been spent on a more memorable meal. Sorry won't be returning

This is a traditional British pub in a lovely location, with great staff and very tasty fresh food.

Members of my family went into the pub to book a table for 16. They said the two members of staff they spoke to were most unwelcoming and verging on rude..they were unable to fit us in which is fair enough, but surely politeness in relaying this doesn't cost much..won't be going there ever as a result which is a shame given we are staying two doors away and the place was recommended!!!

Best pizza anywhere end of. And the pub has a great atmosphere, other amazing food and a good choice of drinks. They welcome dogs just warn them in advance - not a hardship. Staff are really friendly and even when busy are very attentive.

The setting and the staff/service were lovely. However, having ordered the plougmans, it felt like it had come straight out of a very cold fridge. The two slices of chunky bread in particular were just solid and freezing. Such a shame, you made such an effort with good food and huge (too huge) portions but this was such an issue. Please serve it at room temperature and also warm the bread.

What a fantastic find. We booked the day before for 4 of us we all had starters. Mine was mackerel it was excellent, then the beef roast, one of the best I have had. We all thought the food was top class. As well as the excellent food the staff were so helpful & attentive. I will most definitely going back.

We’ve been to The George at Chideock a few times and my Lunch last Thursday was very good. 3 of us had Fish Chips and Garden Peas and the other one had the Vegetarian Option, Mushroom Bourgeon. We were all pleased with the food but I have to say I thought the Menu was a bit limited.Also the Bill wasn’t cheap.

When I last came to Chideock I said that this establishment was nothing to write home about. Unfortunately my latest visit does nothing to make me change my mind. Lockdown has made me ask myself why I visit such places. I found the place dark, dismal and uninviting. It could have been uplifted by the food and drink but alas no. The best part of the experience was that the ladies who were serving were very pleasant. The hospitality industry is undergoing fundamental changes and in my opinion places like this need to adapt or they will disappear.

Really nice atmosphere with fire being lit on a November evening after a long walk on south Coast Way. We wanted to treat ourselves for a birthday. The staff were lovely and service very good. Sadly we were disappointed. We chose the Vegan and Veggie options on the menu but they were really very poor. Stodgy, bland, no flavour and we couldn't finish it. I hope that the chef can explore tastier options and try things to suit people who don't eat meat or dairy, otherwise you're neglecting a client group entirely.

My friend and I have eaten here a couple of times.It is dog friendly and my boy was given a few dog biscuits which delighted him.We find the owner and the staff are delightful and very friendly. There is no rush but food is served in a timely manner.Car parking at the rear is very handy.The food is lovely especially the desserts!

Have eaten here 2 nights as most other pubs in the area close on Mondays and Tuesdays. The food is absolutely delicious and the Malbec really good. Great staff and good atmosphere had a really lovely time here. Can recommend the steak and chicken supreme!!!!

Pretty poor quality food. I had the fish on a bed of noodles. The noodles tasted dreadful… too salty. My wife had a burger which was unimaginative and dry. Friendly staff tho.

We visited for Sunday lunch as a family of 3 generations. The staff would wonderfully accommodating finding a suitable highchair for our baby and bringing a baby portion of Sunday roast for him ahead of our food so we could feed him early.All the food was delicious and we really enjoyed ourselves. We visited this pub when we previously visited the area, and again we weren’t disappointed. The present landlord has obviously made sure that everything runs smoothly and the staff couldn’t be more pleasant and helpful. We had a lovely dinner one evening and Sunday roast. we visited on a Monday evening after finding just about every other place in the area is shut on Monday and Tuesday... ane excellent opportunity for the George!We have driven past this place so many times over the year, and have a vague recollection of visiting and being less than impressed many years ago but it must have changed hands or had a complete revamp and rethink because now it is fantastic - clean, welcoming, great service, lovely cosy interior (nice looking patio area out back with pizza oven too), the food was great (scallops, burger, chicken supreme), reasonably priced, and the wine was at a good price too. We will be back!!!

During our trip to West Bay, we had lunch at this excellent Inn. Everyone really enjoyed their food but the standout dish for me was their scallops. They were outstanding and the best I have ever tasted. If I lived closer I would be there every week

The service was spot on. Very personable, attentive and friendly. The food was delicious too. We went once during our stay in the area and decided to book again for the last night. We weren’t disappointed. All meals during both visits were delicious! It was recommended to us and we can see why!

Just had a gorgeous lunch, sat in the garden at The George. The garden is really nicely maintained with stunning flowers.
