A spur of the moment call on a wet Tuesday afternoon in April, around 2pm. The pub itself is respectfully decorated and well maintained. There is a bar with pool table and TV, to the other side there is more of a lounge area with tv and a partitioned side (at the time of writing) serving meals. The bar areas are relatively tidy and reasonably presented although all drinks were not available today. Food can only be judged on the lunch time menu (photo attached) and although prepared and cooked ok, portion size was a little disappointing. The toilets are either keeping a historical charm or funds ran short during the refurb - quite a let down. On the whole, worth a visit but seems a little overpriced on both food and drink when you consider this is located in a village with local competitors offering more value for money and promotions on food/drink options.

We are regulars because it’s always nice, warm and fresh and always feel welcome, it all changed when the new owners came in! We ordered our drinks no problem, walked into the lounge area we normally like, said hello to the manager who knew us and blonde girl without a reply. Then we were asked if we were eating we replied no and the bar girl said you can’t sit in this area you have to go in the other end! The place was empty and they wanted to tell us where to sit COME ON! This was January, We have never been back since and won’t as long as this manager is there

We visited on a Saturday lunch time. The first thing we noticed was that the pub was freezing no heating on which is not good when it's 2 degrees outside. I ordered corned beef pie and fries. I was told the pie was being made from scratch so would take about 15 minutes. When it arrived the pastry on top was cooked but the filling was cold and the bottom pastry was doughy. My partner had the gammon which she described as lacking taste. The morreti I had was nice and the waitress was very pleasant but over all its not somewhere we'd consider going back to

Been a few times recently, after it’s been taken over, service is good and menu seems good value for money- food wise we’ve only ever tried the nachos, which are amazing, fresh, spicy (presume you can ask for,them to be a bit less on the spicy side - ) but it’s worth just popping in for them alone !

Amazing from start to finish dinner out of this world and big thank you to Emma for everything she’s done for us today she’s definitely a keeper well done the gate for making this a family place to eat we will be back and big thank you again to Emma see u next time

From the moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome. Comfortable seating and surroundings. The food was amazing and the price was also fantastic for the quality of food. We will definitely be calling in again

Had a lovely Sunday lunch however we needed to ask for more veg as we were only given a portion enough for one when there was three of us. We weren't offered any sauces and on request they were brought in the supermarket jars. Some small adjustments would make a big difference. I would still come again.

Did went there couple weeks ago with 15 people n the foods really lovely, really enjoy it and the service is lovely and deffo go back again x

Was quiet lunchtime, so little atmosphere. Was there with family, so enjoyed it.

Arrived at The Gate at around 5’oclock along with my elderly mother ,only a few people in so got seated quite easily .We were given two menus (menus need to be looked at , food stains on them and just very grubby perhaps laminate them then a quick wipe and good as new ) Ordered two mince and dumplings along with two soft drinks and waited for our meals to arrive . It wasn’t too long before our meals came, it stated our meals came with vegetables, yes we got a small pot of peas but the carrots were so finely diced you couldn’t see them never mind eat them . Mince and dumplings very disappointing, mince lacked flavour and was warm not hot , dumpling was solid and tasteless. Last thing, could you offer the option of mashed potato or chips, I’m sure mashed potato would be a better option to accompany this dish . One last thing on the kitchen, please can you ask the chef who is on the pass to wear disposable plastic gloves when handling food with bare hands, not very hygienic. We visited The Gate on the opening night and the food was spot on and have been again since , but this time the food was poor to say the least, hope it’s not on the decline as you can see the current owners have made quite an effort to make a go of this establishment.

We held my Dads celebration of life at The Gate yesterday. The staff were great and loooked after us so well. The buffet was totally amazing. Thank you all for helping make a difficult day a bit nicer.

We visited for Mother's Day lunch. Excellent menu with a really good choice at a fair price. We all had a Sunday roast and it was cooked to perfection with the veg served in a bowl for us to help ourselves. I always think this is a good way to serve so you can decide how much you would like. Desserts were fantastic too. We will definitely be back.

Little gem of a pub! Beautifully refurbished, quite a pleasant surprise when you step inside! Friendly staff and had a lovely chat with the owner. Cheesy chips were amazing! Been back since for one of there amazing burgers, will definitely be back!! Looking forward to trying out Quiz night

Went for our daughters 21st birthday we all had a lovely meal - the staff went out of their way to make sure we had a good night, a special shout out to Emma who was lovely. Thanks for helping us make it a night to remember 🙂

Called in on the way home as its quite local to us....I had a ceasar salad and my partner had steak...absolutely lovely would highly recommend....friendly bar staff too!!

Food OK and swift. Had to get our own cutlery and condiments. Only one real ale on tap.

Bit of issue with the wine but Linsey sorted it straight away she is utterly amazing, ordered steaks cooked to perfection , love the fact we have somewhere we can walk to , finally the gate have done right well done was unreal . Have to say Lindsey knows what needs done

I would just like to thank Trevor and his team for their amazing hospitality at my Fathers wake last Monday. The staff on duty were so kind and helpful. Nothing was an issue for them. The buffet laid out was absolutely amazing. Loads of choice and set out beautifully. All of our guests made comments about the variety and we were very happy with the value for money. Very happy customers. You did ‘Our Dad’ proud! Thank you From all the family xx

Fourth time we’ve been here and can’t fault a thing, only this time I remembered to take photos. Tomahawk pork steak, halloumi burger and American burger, all A-star👍

Lovely bar very cosy food looked lovely

Called in to the gate yesterday evening with my other half was greeted by the most miserable staff she had to clue what she was doing at all wouldn’t hurt to smile once…. we called in about a week or so ago and was met by a lovely young lady who was more then helpful always smiling even took the time out to check to see if we where ok so to the young lady who was working last Wednesday at around 13:30 thank you for making our welcome amazing and we will definitely be back :)

Food took 45 minutes from order to table and was incorrect. As it had taken so long to come I ate it all the same. Food was reasonable, burger was greasy but chips were nice

First time visiting since it reopened and we only knew it had reopened through driving past...no advertising saying it had. The decor was typical of alot of pubs...pleasant but no different from anywhere else.The drinks were very reasonably priced but the choices of cider very limited...1 on draught which was Inch's and then 3 or 4 bottles mixed fruits varieties...which is fine if you like Inch's or mixed fruit ciders which I dont. On to the food...First of all I dont think I've ever been anywhere lately where you have to get your own cutlery and condiments ??there did appear to be plenty of staff around as well...my parter had gammon with a fried egg...he said it was fine but the egg white was abit "snotty"...I had scampi...I dont know what the coating was on the scampi ? Tempura batter maybe ? But whatever it was it wasn't stated on the menu and as I dont like that particular batter I had to leave them.On both dishes the chips were obviously home made and very nice. We would go again and hopefully the little teething problems they seem to be having with the service and menu etc will be sorted.

1. We had reserved our table, which was fine. But then we had to ask for menus - there was no price shown for starters. Eventually, as no-one came to take our order, we decided that we must have to order at the bar. Then it seems we weren't able to open a tab, and had to pay for our food upfront, and each time we bought drinks. We then had to find our own cutlery. 2. Starters were OK, but I expected toast under my garlic mushrooms, not soggy bread. 3. Main courses were tepid. The plates were cold, and the only thing hot was the gravy (advertised as best in Durham, but nothing special!). We weren't offered any apple/cranberry sauces. The pub was fairly busy, which was good to see, but it will be some time before we go back for food. There were plenty of staff, who were all very pleasant, but maybe they could do with a bit more training.

We visited The Gate for lunch today. Recently reopened under new management, we'd heard good reviews so thought we'd see for ourselves. Definitely weren't disappointed, the decor inside is nice, comfy seats and a nice bar area. I had the Classic Burger, my husband the American Burger. Those plus a pint and a lime & soda came to just over £22. The food was superb - all home cooked which is excellent, nice to know you're not eating processed rubbish that's just been heated up, and you can tell a lot of care and attention goes into the food. Also came within 10 minutes of our order, we did arrive at 12 though so may have been first in the queue! Was nice that you can see into the kitchen as well, sign of a quality pub with nothing to hide. We'll definitely return to try out some other items on the menu, highly recommend checking it out!

Great!! Lovely pub, great food, owners have given it the wow factor, staff are so friendly, great nights too, Karaoke, Quiz nights, open Mike, music acts on a Friday, community we have our local back, get yourselves along, you won't be disappointed🙂

The Gate has only been open under new management for just over a week now and has a very family friendly atmosphere. The food is affordable and tasty. Trevor and his staff are great and he has a selection of entertainment 4 nights a week. Keep up the good work and my wife and I plus friends will certainly be back. A breath of fresh air. Lunch was plentiful and delicious and served by friendly staff . Although the weather was snowy and price of electricity leaves a lot to be desired the room was lovely and warm. The prices are very competitive and I recommend the Gates. There is entertainment, Karaoke, quiz, buskers night. There is a special on at lunch times £7.99 for 2 courses

Been to The Gate in Framwellgate Moor Durham. The food was amazing and staff so friendly. We had a Mixed Grill, Chicken & leak pie ( both with chips) and sides of Garlic mushrooms & onion rings. 1 Blackcurrant & lemonade and 1 lime & soda.

Lovely food, had grandmas heaven (Caesar salad topped with chicken, scampi, onion rings and chips) and a hot beef torpedo roll both were delicious and the service was really quick will definitely be back.

I went with my husband for lunch and waited forever. Two separate tables of 3 people came in after us and were served while we still waited. Found out they hadn't even put our order through . They werent even observant enough to see this...

For non local people please note the poor reviews were from previous Management, the pub has just reopened March 2023 with new owners. . Been here with both friends and family, both times food was delicious and reasonably priced. Sunday lunch was very good with...

Just had a lovely Sunday lunch at The Gate Framwellgate moor service was great lovely atmosphere. Prices are reasonable

First time in the place since it reopened last year. Refurb looks really good. No food available at the moment and the opening hours are variable. Seems clean and tidy. £4 for Amstell, tasted good. Very quiet for a Thursday teatime. Will probably drop in again but the changeable hours are a problem.

Made a fairly late booking for a party of six adults and two children. When arriving one of the party wavered from having the Sunday lunch that she’d booked and it wasn’t going to be a problem for them - she eventually went for the Sunday lunch after all, and she said that it was delicious. Other members of the party had a variety of different dishes and everyone was delighted with what they had. The only disappointment was the there was no fillet steak available, although it was near the end of service. We’ve been three times for some food and have been impressed every time. We’ll certainly be back.

Just home from visiting this restuarant. Went with family who stay locally. We had excellent meals. The SeaBass was delicious. We all agreed the mains were good value for money, very tasty and big portions. We still had room for deserts and they didn't disappoint either. If we stayed in the area we would definitely visit again but travelling back to Scotland soon. Thank you for a lovely experience in your refurbished establishment.

Ordered chicken katsu wrap from the sandwiches and wrap menu and it was lovely! Food was piping hot when served and very tasty and worth the price. Very full and enjoyed my experience! Will come back again.
