Local to the area and have been going for years however service and quality both deteriorated more recently. Arrived at 945 this morning and waited 45 minutes for 1 breakfast to arrive at table despite asking after 30 minutes if everything was ok. Poached eggs and avacado on toast - minimal ‘avacado spread’ which didn’t appear fresh and very over cooked poached eggs. Really want to support the team and local business but won’t be going back! Rest of table had scones / coffees which were nice but not good enough to justify the wait and overall service.

I think they are cutting corner. The sizes of teas and coffees has got much smaller, I am sure the large coffee size used to be the medium, and the amount on the plates for breakfast has got smaller too.

This was an excellent scottish breakfast. At £10.95 it's at the high end price wise for a breakfast but, it was cooked with care, well presented, and a real plateful. I think you also get a free tea and filter coffee with this breakfast. Other coffees/tea are available at an additional cost. Nice open plan building with outdoor seats. Very friendly attentive staff. Clean and tidy toilets. 9/10 I'll definitely be back.

Went for a tuna sandwich and cheese and pickle sandwiches. Previously, the meals were very good with plenty of fillings. My sandwich, tuna, was not even spread to the edges and had half the amount in as last time. Tasted more of bread than tuna. My husband had the cheese and pickle sandwich only no pickle. They ran out the day before( dont they check stock to see what needs topping up?). So only some cheese in the sandwich. Crisps are so hard to bite into. Salad was barely there. No cucumber or tomato. Place was nearly empty. I'm not surprised as really gone down hill. Prices have sure gone up but for much much less . Won't be returning in a hurry, that's for sure

When we visit Kelso we always have a trip to this lovely garden centre. There is something for everyone to look at and enjoy. The cafe is fantastic, the service is excellent and the food is really good. Reasonable priced too.

We visited the garden centre in Kelso to purchase arts and crafts for my children to do in time for Christmas. But little did we know that they have recently removed the Art and Crafts from their shelves permanently. So disappointing.

Have been to Mayfield many times, normally for a drink and a scone, which are very nice, but this time decided to try a Mediterranean omelette, advertised to come with chips and salad, I didn’t want chips but there was no reduction in price (almost £13) so I thought I would get a larger side of salad instead, alas this was not the case, the omelette was so large, don’t know how many eggs used, probably 6 which is far too many for one person, the only veg I could identify were tomatoes and courgette, salad was limp and pathetic, my first omelette had to go back as it was undercooked , virtually raw egg inside, staff had no problem getting me another one which was cooked, but overall it had no taste at all, the addition of cheese would help greatly, my pet hate, served on a wooden chopping board, what’s wrong with a china plate, at least that would look clean. It is always hit and miss with service in this place, and although the staff are generally very nice it can take an inordinate amount of time to get served, no matter what you have. There are so many great places in Kelso to eat, if Mayfield want people to eat there they really need to up their game because the prices do not reflect the quality of food.

I had the fish , mostly batter !!! It came with a handful of chips , cold mushy peas , dried out tartar sauce and the bread and butter was stale with margarine and not butter as offered on the menu . All in all cafe food at al a carte prices , don't eat here unless you enjoy being ripped off ... Also the bread had green mould on the edge , this place is a joke !

Stange place. On the one hand we would highly recommend the garden centre and especially the garden plants section, which is utterly superb (as is the fresh fruit and veg. section). But what a let-down the restaurant food was. We ordered an avocado and humous sandwich which was served on what appeared to be cheap shop-bought brown bread - apparently un-buttered. The thin smear of avocado on one slice and humous on the other (with dreary carrot grated on top) meant that it was uncomfortably dry, accentuated by un-dressed salad and salty crisps. It needed a whole pot of tea to wash it down, otherwise would have been inedible. Meanwhile the other "gourmet" fish finger sandwich was served on what appeared to be cheap, unbuttered, shop-bought white bread, making it claggy, un-appetising and difficult to eat. Not worth the money. The staff were very pleasant though. Thoughts - for what it's worth, our experience is - that we had planned a trip to Kelso, but had previously read your reviews on the Mayfield Garden Centre restaurant, and had decided to eat elsewhere. But we found that parking in Kelso Town Centre was impossible. The Mayfield Restaurant was busy and we had to queue, so perhaps other people also experienced our parking difficulties and veered towards the this place, simply because there is ample parking. We won't return.

Bought a bargain David Austin rose great. However we went in the restaurant and one of our party wanted a sausage roll that were piled up on the serving hatch. After queuing we were told we couldn't buy a sausage roll for 10mins. It took about 5 mins to get our two scones and 3 coffees and pay to be told again it would be another 10 mins to buy a sausage roll! Why? Ridiculous

Last August I wrote a glowing report on this cafe. Oh how disappointing this latest visit was. Dish of fish and chips with a slice of buttered bread 14.95. Bread was cut in half diagonally and fish the same size. Overcooked batter so hard and half a dozen chips also hard. A total waste of money it resembled a child’s portion and the slice of bread was this to make up for small portions. If I want buttered bread I can eat that at home. Altogether 47.00 for three meals a complete waste of money.

Being dedicated gardeners whenever we come across a Garden Centre that we have never visited before we have to go in and have a look around. We were greatly impressed by the qrange and quality of plants for sale and actually managed to buy two plants we had been looking for for some time. After putting the plants in our car we returned to the building and went to the restaurant where we had coffee and exceedingly good scones. These were far superior to the ones on offer at our own local garden centre..

Have been a regular customer here but not anymore, went with my wife for lunch ordered, the Pea and Ham soup which was terrible, it had been obviously watered down to the stage there was no substance left in it it was awful the worst soup we have ever had, table next to us said the place had went downhill recently, the standard of food was at times shocking the soup we had was shocking. to charge £6 each for a soup and a roll was a joke, the total bill for 2 soups, a piece of shortbread and tea for two £19 40. the time was 12. noon and the place was only two thirds full, perhaps this tells its own story. I checked the prices at 4 other premises in Kelso, the maximim i saw for a plate of soup and a roll was £4.20. Give this place a miss overpriced poor quality

Comfortable restaurant with a large number of tables staffed by a pleasant team. Visited for tea and cakes where there was a good selection including scones, tray-bakes and cakes - much improved from earlier visits. However somewhat surprised to find the cakes etc were not screened off from the queue of customers or under covers like Marks & Spencer use; - assume must be work in progress to have the displayed food better protected?

This is no longer a relaxing place because of the irritating background music. People with hidden disabilities will find this place hard going. Chatting is difficult for thise with hearing issues. Cake and traybake portions are rather small and mean for an average price near the £3 mark. The choice is not as good as it used to be. A scone with butter but no jam is £2.65. Coffee has never been good there. The staff are pleasant but the faces seem to change all the time. The slick table service during covid was much better - maybe they should bring that back. Disappointing to lose a former bolthole but it's really slipped.

From first contact with counter staff who ensured our order was exactly correct to the actual food and presentation. My husband was totally pleased no mean feat I can assure you. We will return next time in Kelso

Service friendly but the "gourmet BLT" was anything but, £9.25 for the smallest BLT wrap, did come with chips but they weren't great tbh. Regular coffee now £2.75 so not cheap place for snack anymore. Wouldn't not rush back, a sandwich at Ednam House is cheaper than the garden centre.

A large well stocked garden centre near to the town centre. Lots of trees, shrubs, plants, perennials, all the things a good garden centre should stock. The fayre on offer exceeds that, with garden furniture, water features, statues, housewares, ladies clothing and a variety of foodstuffs. The jewel in the crown is the restaurant. This is large, well appointed and comfortable, and with a friendly, helpful staff. The food on offer was of great variety, Sunday lunches, fish & chips, burgers, pasta and so much more. You want it, they have it. I was greatly impressed with the extensive children's menu too. My wife and I settled for a light bite, cheese scones with butter, and Americano coffees, which should have been hotter. This was the only downside I could find, but the scones were to die for. Overall, a very good impression was created by the centre. Clean, well run, and way above the average. Ample free parking, with a short walk to the entrance, this most useful to the less able.
