The Friary in Carrickfergus

Firstly I want to say I'll never be back or recommend this to anyone, ordered to collect, chips missing from order, was put in the book that we were owed this, next week I placed an order and got the chips that were missing, the guy who served us put two tubs of boiling curry sauce upside down in the bag, it scalded my son's girlfriend's legs so badly they blistered and was very badly burned. Of course we contacted them and were told the manager would call us back, this never happened and our phone calls went ignored. This is extremely dangerous way of packing and needs to be looked into. Bad customer service from management, never be back!!

They have lost or really never knew the art of making Fish and chips etc. I could go on and on but what's the point they don't care. If there was a prize for making GREASY & TOO MUCH batter then the Fairy would get first prize.

Not good. Has got very expensive and one of the most expensive in the town. First off staff member walked away after serving peeson in front of me, without even acknowledging me. Hard chips, I don't mind crisp but have to be soft and fluffy inside. Pastie was soggy and batter coming off. The curry sauce was watery and lumpy, wouldn't have thought this was actually possible, but it was, it was actually watery with lumps, perhaps they hadn't stirred the mix enough. There area few others which get rave reviews that we haven't tried yet and are cheaper so will try these. Honestly don't know how it wins awards.

I usually enjoy the food from here. Not tonight. I ordered a cod supper and after waiting 20min I took it home and opened it up. The cod was Thin and dry,mostly batter and also burned. £7.95 wasted. I could have taken it back but I'm angry and pissed off and things could escalate. But I will NEVER be back. There are plently of other chippys in Carrick who wont rip you off.

Had a fish supper from here and it was without doubt the worst I have ever had. The chips were half cooked and cold and the fish must have thought it was still in the sea as it was so soaked in grease. Wouldn’t eat here again even if it were free. Very disappointed as we had eaten here several times before with few issues but this time the whole meal ended up in the bin.

I very seldom leave a bad review and it saddens me to do so. Extremely bad management in the delivery side, this has happened to other people I know, the wait time over two hours but I decided to give them my custom which I now regret. I placed and paid my order at 5.30pm and was supposed to be delivered by 6.10pm, I telephoned at 6.45pm it hadn't even left the shop but was told it shouldn't be long, still no sign by 7.15pm so I phoned again,at last it had finally left I got my order at 7.30pm two hours it took. I will never order again and won't recommend to anyone. This is extremely bad customer service and bad management on their part. Not the staffs fault, definitely management. Hire more delivery drivers to handle busy days!!

Do not under any circumstances place an order for delivery and expect it to be delivered at the stated time 2nd chance at ordering will never order again

Well that wasnt not the greatest Plain burger had dressing and cheese on it. Chips wouldn't even call what we got chips dregs at bottom of the pan and very little of them. Salt and ginger yup forgot that also Had to go back up and order curry sauce yup didn't add to order

If you want some well cooked take out food it is hard to pass the Friary. Love this place. I’m quite a fussy eater but have never been disappointed. Staff are amazing, very professional and so friendly. Well worth a visit.

I swore I would never use this chippy again it’s not so much for the food being poor it’s how slow the staff are 25mins to cook a small chip and a steakette bap please don’t reply and say it’s freshly cooked on order every chippy normally have a batch ready to go “fast food “ really !! even when the guy put the lunch box up he then and only then did he put my small chip into the fryer a total shambles so people if your in a hurry I would advise you to shop elsewhere there is definitely better chippies close by

I bought 2 x pensioner fish suppers for lunch. The food was made fresh while I waited and it tasted amazing. I was served by a girl called Hannah and her friendly service made our visit an absolute pleasure. I would give 10 out of 10 for the food and for the service. I will continue to use this chip shop and highly recommend the visit.

I have visited this chippy several times this year purely for convenience. The food is ok, the staff are friendly and the variety of choice is good but the service is very slow. Only recommendation for this chippy is the speed of service.

Love their chicken burgers with the salad and mayo!!! Over Christmas they sustained during the madness. Decided to call and pre order! So the question was what would u like on ur chicken burger to which I replied salad and mayo! That’ll take about 10 minutes! Headed up in ten and collected order really looking forward to it. Opened it and there was no lettuce, no tomato, no onion. God I could have cried So I called to let them know and they immediately said they would replace the whole thing immediately! I said no it’s not worth it for a garnish of salad! Don’t do that! But hell when u really look forward to something and it’s not what u ordered it’s really frustrating! So ultimately it has put me of!

We ordered 3 Fish suppers for delivery, we were told approximately 15-20 mins, in fact it took 40 minutes! We did telephone to find out how much longer and was informed it was on it’s way “I THINK”. We have used them before but we will not be using them again, the fish batter was wet and soggy and the chips were hard and slimy! The standards have deteriorated over the last couple of years, we thought maybe the standards would have improved hence we gave them another chance. I hope you take notice of these comments and look at improving your standards.

Live this chippy, lovely quick staff. Food is 100% fresh!!! You can call for delivery or collect. They do offers daily. Great amount and good for miney

It’s a nice takeaway . I have ordered their cod supper and scampi supper . The scampi’s u get here are the best u can get in a carrickfergus chippy. The tartar sauce is also excellent . The only time I was served a lesser quantity is when it was on a weekend .I could have counted the chips in the box on my fingers. And 7 pound something for a box of scampi supper I expected more . May be I was greedy . But food is remarkably good for a chippy.

As the title says, service is very slow. On the upside, it probably means your food has been cooked from fresh but fast food this is not.In common with so many chippys these days the chips are undercooked. They are served a bit in the white site and mushy. Would be so much better if they were, as the submarine commander says in Dads army: " And I don't want nasty soggy chips. I want them crisp und brown"The pink pasties are spicy and very nice. Good value for money as you get to taste them all night!!Extensive menu including all day fry.With some small improvements this could get 5 stars.

I ordered the Whole Tail Scampi for £4.85. You get a great big box of battered scampi, chips, side salad and sauce. Excellent value, and the food itself tasted great. They had newspapers, which we ignored. Their menu says they have a 5-star hygiene rating, a fish & chip quality award, msc.org say they do certified sustainable seafood, and they say they were top 60 in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2018.Big shop, with some great wooden benches you can dine at. Huge bank of windows, although the scene outside is mostly a petrol station forecourt, with trees further off. I liked their twisty light bulbs.

The food in here is hit and miss, it can be lovely, but other times not great. I usually like the Chicken kebab on pitta, but there have been a couple of times I've got this and the chicken pieces have been so hard and dry that they were inedible.

Chips ok, fish excellent. Unfortunately some (not all) of the staff are mouth-breathers; making snide remarks and sniggering behind customers' backs is really not on. Management need to get a grip.

I don't understand how the quality of the food can be so hit and miss. The first time I went it was really good, the 2nd time it was terrible in fact it was so bad we were unable to eat the chips and took them back whereas normally they would have gone in the bin, decided to try it again and it was just ok, ended up back again as it was the only takeaway open on a Sunday and it was lovely. Unfortunately it is so inconsistent we avoid it now which is a real shame because it has one of the best selection of gluten free options of any of the chip shops in Carrickfergus but the waiting time for gluten free food is ridiculous.

This place is so hit and miss it's crazy. Ordered via their app at 16:55 for collection at 17:35 and they didn't have the order ready so i had to wait for 20 minutes for my order to be made on top of the time from when I placed my order to give them warning of my arrival time. I can only assume they forgot my order, they didn't admit that to me! 9/10 times despite asking if you want salt and vinegar they will forget to put it on. Man Carrickfergus sucks for places to eat! The food here is fine but the hassle and mistakes just make it not worth eating here any longer. Getting fish and chips shouldn't be that difficult but for these guys it is. ALWAYS expect a long wait for food? Management really need to get a grip on the issues in this place.

I find the place very hit and miss, and slow. First few times it was great for fish and chips but recently very average, plus seems slow. Think we wiĺl give it a miss for a while

Cuando visitamos por primera vez fue excelente, en ocasiones no ha sido tan buena, si pides por teléfono el intervalo de tiempo que te dan se aseguran su lista, pero si vas y pides pueden esperar al menos 25 minutos. El tamaño de la porción era enorme, pero me di cuenta a finales de las porciones cada vez más, que supongo que no es una mala cosa teniendo en cuenta que comer demasiado.

Dos peces y un chip era el orden. Las patatas no eran buenas y los peces grandes, aunque el bateador era empalagoso y un poco crujientes. Tenía que raspar el bateador fuera y comer los peces. Si Mortons en pescado y patatas fritas son una ballycastle 10 entonces El Convento es uno.

Había leído algunas críticas antes de escribir la mía. Algunos habían dicho que era un servicio muy lento, me gustaría decir que la gente tiene el servicio prácticamente baja a la parálisis completa. Esperé casi 25 minutos y sólo pedimos un chip. Fue doloroso observar la inactividad del personal de lo que me contó casi 10, por qué tantas? Sólo dos de ellos parecían realmente haciendo algo. La chica con pelo rubio y gafas fue la estrella del espectáculo, mientras que el chico joven con feria de pelo es un absoluto desperdicio de espacio, no emplear él. El director necesita para poner un par de arreglos en lugar de los clientes pronto o se vaya a otro sitio.

Best fish and chips around. They have loads of choice. The chicken kebab on chips definitely a favourite

En un día frío y única me encontraba en mi propio almuerzo, así que para mí me decidí a tratar a un bacalao y patatas fritas. Esta fue mi primera vez en el convento, y no será la última. Yo estaba muy contento de ver que la comida era fresco en frente de usted. Esto significa que tienes que esperar, pero vale la pena. El convento tiene un menú muy amplio para llevar a cabo, tenga en cuenta que hay una pequeña zona para comer.

Pescado y patatas fritas bien hechas cuando pedimos, tuvimos que esperar un tiempo, pero vale la pena la espera. El personal era servicial

Went for a takeaway for 6 fish suppers, but they were sold out of all fish. Took the chicken, but it had obviously been cooked some time before as it was dry and chewy. The chips were average, and not fresh. Staff weren't very helpfull. Certainly won't be returning.

Ordered food from here and took them well over and hour and a half to deliver it. Called to find out what was happening to be told it was ready and just waiting on the delivery drive. Called back 30 minutes later to be told it was just being made now.. make me this the first person lied to me

Went for a takeaway in this fine place . Whilst not being a chippy person I have to admit the chips were one of the best I have eaten, so crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside , top marks. The chicken burger was beautifully done . My partner had the breaded cod which was superb ( had to try it ) . Will be back when I visit Carrick again .Give it a go you won't be disappointed.

Best chicken burger I've ever had, huge. And massive portions of everything, I'm a big girl and me and my partner share a chip! Especially love the onion rings, can't imagine a chippy without them. Absolutely beautiful. Friendly staff all the time. And the queues speak for themselves.

Staff are friendly and very prompt when taking orders. Always very busy when I'm in but don't mind the wait as the food is worth it. Always a pleasant visit. definitely recommend.

Very friendly staff, excellent value for money and great portion sizes. A full and varied menu. We got a family deal which fed four of us with leftovers. Looking forward to our next visit.

The best chippy in Carrick by far never disappoints! I love their gravy, couldn't even think of going anywhere else now!! Congrats on the chippy of the year award...

Although I found the food nice I found there were too many mistakes in my order and found the staff only apologised once out of seven occasions. As I was spending on average £20 every week and disappointed at the missing items I now take my custom elsewhere.I was refunded for the missing items but found the Friary a big let down.

The Friary food wise is the best chip shop in carrickfergus, although you have to wait 25 minutes for your food without fail upon ordering. The food is great tasting but it's just far too long for "fast food", especially when you're hungry. If you have time to burn and are prepared to wait for a great tasting chippy this is the best place to go in Carrickfergus. Can also get very busy but busy or not you are guaranteed to wait a while for the food. Also 9 times out of 10 despite them asking or you specifying you want salt and pepper they will forget to put it on, this became so annoying to us we bought the vinegar they sell in the shop to counteract the apparent mental block of them never ever doing it. Given an average rating as the food tastes excellent, just knocked off the two stars for painful waiting times and always ignoring salt and vinegar requests. Used to be our go to on a Friday but we have moved on now.

AMAZING!!Management, staff and premises immaculate.Had a chicken, bacon and cheese burger, my (veggie) girlfriend had an egg soda.The manageress went out of her way to ensure the veggie order wasn't contaminated with anything non-veggie.Food 10/10Service 10/10Really worth a visit.

This chip shop is the best in Carrick, great food for great prices. This is now the chip shop I would now go to.

use here a lot for quick lunches and lazy teatimes the variety of food is good and all freshly fried

This is my closet chippy, and it's not the best. What ever they are frying their chips in or or the chips themselves are horrible. Their sausages aren't very nice either. I love a chippy sausage that is golden you don't get that here. The only thing I did enjoy was my well done onion rings!

Ordered a delivery which took over an hour to arrive. You could easily tell that the food had been prepared some time ago. Cold & soggy fish and chips .

I have to say I along with my family use this establishment quite often, since it opened. It is "local" to me and in a good location with other outlets including a petrol station. It has a small seating area to eat or await your takeaway meal(s) being prepared. They once prided themselves on how "fresh" ingredients were prepared, nothing pre-cooked. all done at time of ordering in house (hence the wait) which was a refreshing change to other similar outlets but alas..I am afraid it can now be a bit of a hit or miss when ordering from here. Initially the food was good quality, well prepared and cooked to a high standard with good presentation. I recently had a family meal of 2 Cod suppers, 1 adult Goujon mega meal deal, 1 Chicken fillet mega meal deal and a children's Chicken Goujon meal deal which came to a price of close on £30 and I was a little disappointed with some of the contents,The Fish had been over cooked with batter "burnt" or should I say crisp and dark (if you like it that way), likewise some of the Chips were small and dried up. The meals also seemed to be a little greasy which wasn't always the case, albeit plentiful.May be I had been unlucky on this occasion and will no doubt use this place again, unless standards do drop further.

Chicken goujons are usually good! My partner loves the all day fry they do, it is slightly expensive although they do meal deals with a drink for example a chicken goujon supper

Decided to give the Friary another as couldn't be bothered going to my usual one ( the furthest away from me) and it is actually the closest to me. I was very disappointed. I had to wait a while to place order as most staff were out the back. Despite being somewhat in my opinion overstaffed ( at least 5 or 6) processing of orders is really slow. There were only 2 other customers in at the time. The cod was smaller and greaser than what we're used to and had 4!!! Chips underneath.. the burgers got thumbs up from kids. However the order was over £2 more expensive than our usual haunt. Considering the prices I was hoping for more. No better than first visit over a year ago.

Good chips, this place has a lovely fish and chips, lovely sausage supper, the only problem is it can be a bit slow.

Used this place a few times simply out of convenience and in the hope it improves. Unfortunately it constantly disappoints. The fish was one of the worst I've ever had, dry and over battered. I previously had chicken on chips and it was poor also... I just don't know how many times you give somewhere a chance.

Have been here 3 times now before reviewing! Fish poor quality almost tastes frozen, Sausages very poor, Ulster fry absolutely disgusting threw it away! Chips loaded with fat and tasted like old cold roast potato's! if this place wants to charge the high prices it needs to improve 100%.I will be voting with my feet and eat elsewhere in future!

Ordered fish supper. Fish was a bit soggy and chips were too well cooked. Cheeseburger ordered for my son was a cheap slice of processed cheese. Would rather this had been proper grated cheese like other chippies give. Not bad but room for improvement.

Tried this place when it first opened and it wasn't great then but I decided to wait a while and try again, second time around was no better if not worse!! Small portions of super greasy food at expensive prices is not a good combination think I'll be sticking to Victoria hotspot.

Ate this week at the new place the friary, can't wait to go back. Only had breakfast and looking forward to dinner here, you can eat in or take away, sockets available for chargers or lap tops which is a nice touch. The sausage In my cooked breakfast were obviously butchers sausages whichever were a delight! Do not change these! Excellent value for money. Two breakfasts for just over a fiver. Extremely clean, 5 star rating and friendly staff

Visited the Friary when it first opened and wasn't too impressed. It was bunged as to be expected, service was very very slow and food just ok. Got a kids meal about a month ago although not that busy was still slow, although I think food is cooked fresh to order so this could be why. They have plenty of staff too,With only myself for tea tonight I grabbed a quick bag of chips and I have to say I'm still not that impressed. They were a little soft for my liking ( but not greasy) and I could taste the oil even though covered in vinegar. Portion size is smaller than most and prices a bit higher. Chips with curry sauce are very expensive compared to most.The staff are lovely and the premises clean, bright, airy and fresh I'm not a regular chippy person anymore ( used to be) and unfortunately the Friary hasn't managed to convert me. Don't think I will be back.
