The Fox & Hounds - Harlestone in Daventry

Meat eaters had a lovely Sunday roast dinner , sadly the veggie option (butternut wellington) was disappointing- very heavy pastry. Service was great & desserts all delicious.

Once very good, now very poor. I ordered a salad main course which used to come in a large bowl with an abundance of leaves, seeds, nuts, and other salad trimmings. Now, no greens, a small dolop of humus, a couple of tomatoes a few croutons, bottled and elderly looking capers, and a few stale, soft croutons. 10% more expensive than July 2023. The cheese board was no better. Where previously you'd find a decent selection of bespoke local cheddar and other boutique cheeses, thoughtfully presented, this selection arrived with grapes oddly picked off the stem, the cheapest plastic supermarket Camenbert, cheddar, and Stilton, served in mouse sized portions. This is a classic case of a once quality gastro pub falling victim to inflation, poorly trained kitchen staff, and sinking to the usual provincial UK mediocrity when it comes to food preparation.

If you like great food and wine this is the place to go. They have a set menu for £100 with a premium bottle of wine and options like scallops, steak, pork belly and cheese. Something for everyone and a great offer.

Sad to see the pub has gone down hill. It used to be very good. Greeted by a rather grumpy young man working at the bar, who lead us to our table with no interaction. When we sat down, he said we needed to use the barcode to order and ‘that was that’. We had no interaction with staff until we went back inside to ask about allergies. There was no detail about allergies on the main menu. We were then handed an iPad and told to go back to the table. The iPad was difficult to use and didn’t always explain clearly what was gluten free and what wasn’t. Due to it being unclear, we had to go back inside the pub and ask a member of staff about the iPad. We were then told they did gluten free bread and we could swap options on the main menu to be gluten free. This was never explained before. We were just handed an iPad & had to work it out ourselves. The manager came and helped us in the end. She was helpful, however, agreed the system they have to use for allergies isn’t very good. Food was average overall. Not good like it used to be! Missing that personal touch and good service. Will not be returning anytime soon sadly. Has potential to be such a lovely country pub but is far from that at the moment.

Recently visited after having a booking with another nearby restaurant who had to unexpectedly cancel our booking. The Fox & Hound gave us too service! The other restaurant had a power cut and sent their bookings to The Fox & Hound. Considering they would have been a lot busier, on a Sunday evening, they delivered our food so quickly. The food was so tasty as well. Shannon served us and was very happy, cheerful and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be back. Very pleased with the service and food.

We had a fabulous lunch at the Fox and hounds. The food was amazing. The service was first class and the atmosphere was great. This is a beautiful pub in a beautiful location and well worth a visit. We will be back.

This place was a total disaster. 1. Waited more than 20 minutes to get a drink 2 Ordered food, waited 30 minutes for starters to arrive, mushrooms were not cooked and hardly warm, sent them back, replaced after 10 minutes. 3 parfait came with two slices of bread not toasted just eatable. 4 meal of the day liver, swimming in gravey. Not how to serve this type of meal. 5 Second meal Gammon was ok There must be a problem with the kitchen, the staff know there is a problem so the they offer to reduce the bill. We didn’t ask they just reduce the total. We just want good value food! Why would we consider going back when there are others serving better service and food. I don,t think so This place used to be so good. Very disappointed!

Found this place by accident whilst looking for a place to have a virtual business meeting! And I couldn’t have wished to have found a better place, Becky was so welcoming and friendly, it felt like I was in my living room!! My husband and I had Sunday lunch last week. I had beef, he had trio of roasts. The food was quite tasty. However it wasn’t quite as warm as it should have been and my husband was disappointed that the roast chicken element of his dinner was a small chicken leg on the bone and very little meat. Our order was taken quickly and we didn’t wait long for our food which was good. Our waitress was pleasant, however nobody checked after we got our food to make sure all was ok. They were very busy though. The main thing that spoiled our visit was this horrible drain smell that came just after we finished our food. Just as well it was after our food, because honestly if it was during our meal, I could not have eaten… and that’s not an exaggeration! I l felt like retching as it was! We mentioned this to our waitress when we paid our bill. She sort of fobbed it off saying that it came from outside and a sewage smell was just one of those things we get in the lovely countryside location!…. Now I want to make it clear that we don’t blame her for saying this. It was probably some rehearsed answer staff were told to give to customers who complained!! Honestly, it’s a silly patronising excuse. That was no “healthy country smell”. I was brought up on a farm in Ireland and I know the various country odours: slurry, dung, silage etc… this was simply a stomach churning blocked drain smell! The management need to be honest with the customers, and not give a silly “countryside” excuse. Most of all they need to sort it out. This is a good restaurant, it’s relatively pricey which isn’t a problem… but please, horrible smells should not be part of the dining experience!

I’m actually quite upset about my experience today. The Fox and Hounds has always been a go to of mine for a nice lunch or evening meal. We booked in the bar area so we could take our dog - one of the lovely things about this pub is having a area for dogs. We ordered a pizza, a cheeseburger, Lemonade, coffee, and small wine £49.50ish. The food came very quickly. Coffee was nice. Wine as expected. The burger was 100% a frozen processed patty, it had no taste to it and neither did the cheese, the bun had that slightly stale feel … you know when you can’t tell if it’s toasted or stale because it’s soft in the middle but hard at the edges and it feels like stale hard over toasted. They put no sauce or relish in it or either butter the bread so it’s just a patty, bit of cheese melted on it and bread. Really dry and unpleasant. They take a chunk of jarred pickle and chop that in the middle and stick on the side in a pointless ramekin. Honestly it was rank but I was starving so I ate it and gave half to the dog. The pizza looked like one of the pizza express ones you cook at home from Tesco for £5 - which is fine as pizza express is nice but kinda not what we thought we’d get. We asked for extra bacon which I don’t believe we got unless the normal portion is one fingernails worth so then our two fingernails worth makes sense. I won’t be coming back, it was absolutely disappointing and such a shame as it used to be good.

I cannot fault the service here, it was very efficient and friendly. However the food was a bit of a disappointment. The cod was very greasy and the nourish bowl did not contain the listed ingredients so whilst it was tasty it did not have the roasted cauliflower or squash I was expecting, a little bit of broccolini and carrot is not the best alternative. At least give me the choice to choose something else. Sadly the espresso was awful as frequently is in the UK.
