We are in Portland for a short break and decided on the Eight kings for our dinner. The staff are very attentive and friendly. From what I saw locals were in as well (so a big thumbs up from them) drinks were prompt- our dinners to a little longer than expected but the staff kept apologising. But it was well worth the wait - yum I would def recommend 👌

Came here for dinner after a long day in Portland. The atmosphere inside is nice and the staff are friendly. Unfortunately, they messed up 2 of our 3 dinner orders (delivering the wrong burger type) and told us we'd have to wait again to get the correct orders - as we had waited 30 minutes up to that point we just kept what we had. Food was sadly not very good, with burger patties being flat and lifeless. Would have appreciated more action from them on getting us the right orders. It's a shame because the place is lovely on the inside!

The Eight Kings is a lovely pub. Staff are friendly, welcoming and efficient; service at the bar and in the restaurant was faultless; the food was excellent, delicious and plentiful. There is a pleasant garden with lots of seating, and inside was comfortable with a friendly and lively atmosphere. Definitely recommended. The only negative was availability of parking. Most of the roadside in the immediate vicinity has double yellow lines, or resident parking.

let's start with the drinks. They didn't have what I wanted, so they provided me with a suitable alternative to what I had ordered. the menu had a good selection of different foods to try, and I was looking forward to the king burger that I had ordered. Then came THE WAIT. 1 hour and 30 minutes of tummy rumbling and being told 'the food will be here shortly' and them offering a drink on the house, I finally received my food. It was strange because it came with not the onion rings that it said on the menu but a portion of low quality chips that weren't even mentioned beforehand, I asked what had happened to the onion rings and was presented with 3 uncooked depressed rings of onion. The burger seemed to be made out of ingredients bought from a corner shop, and the salad was lacking the basic parts (e.g, tomatoes). The reasoning we got given for such a poor experience was that they were busy even though only 3 of 7 tables were being used. In their defence, they had ONE member of staff missing, but why didn't they have any backup? In conclusion , I strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant at all costs.

This lovely little pub on the side of a roundabout could be easily passed by but it really is worth stopping in for a visit. It was our first time visiting the pub and from the moment we entered we were greeted with a warm and friendly smile. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff especially Jamie and Zak . The carvery was absolutely amazing. The meat melted in my mouth and the roast potatoes were the best I've ever had. Put that together with a warm but relaxed atmosphere and this little gem of a pub on Portland will definitely be on my list to revisit.

Wonderful Sunday Carvery, best roast potatoes ever (don't tell my mum). Generous meat portions, lots of veg variety. Would have been 5 stars but felt a little rushed, we weren't offered to see the dessert menu, and when asked were told there was no time as the next sitting was due in 10 minutes. We arrived 5 minutes before our booking, and had to wait for our table to be cleared had to wait for our turn at the carvery . A hour and half just isn't long enough for the sitting. But to finish on a positive, great value to money.

Visited on a weekend trip to the area, after finding the café we were going to eat at had a closed kitchen. Arrived during an outdoor party event, but were hoping for chips rather than 'full roast wrapped in a Yorkshire pudding' so went in to the bar - asked the barmaid if they were also serving chips as well, and one of the regulars propping up the bar was the only one to respond with a shake of the head. Did eventually manage to order a drink, which I had to lean over the regulars to do, went outside to a picnic table only to have a chain of staff sit down to vape at the next table seemingly one after another. Gave up after the first drink and moved on from the fruity haze... I get that a reasonable amount of trade comes from events, and local regular drinkers, but on this occasion we didn't feel like we were made welcome.

Visited today just before 1:30, asked the barmen if the kitchen was open and are they still serving lunch, he replied yes. Then a young girl come out from the kitchen and she told the barmen the fryers are off and it’s only sandwiches! This was purely down to a lack of communication between the front off house and kitchen staff. The barman was very pleasant and apologetic, The dinning areas looked clean and modern. Can’t comment on the food or drink as we didn’t eat and went elsewhere that food was still being served, they missed out on £60 we spent in another local that also had spectacular views across Portland

Beautiful pub and restaurant in the lovely area of Portland. Phoned ahead to book a table for Carvery and were told we would be able to come at 3:15. Arrived at 3:05 and were asked to wait in beer garden, which was a lovely space. Ordered diet cokes all of which were very flat. We then went through to the dining room, which looked clean and bright. Unfortunately that is where the positives ended. We had to sit and wait for nearly an hour to go and get our food, by the time we were told we were allowed, all that remained was dry looking meat, not enough Yorkshire’s or roast potatoes for everyone in our party and an array of vegetables that looked as though they had been sat out for hours. The cabbage was brown and the green beans had lost all of their colour and were grey, I couldn’t put either on my plate. There were a lot of flys around the food counter. The chef/ owner (possibly) apologised for what was left after one of us asked if the food was being replenished and did charge us a discount at only £5 per head. We did appreciate the token of the food being discounted but to be honest had it not have been we would have probably been refusing to pay anyway. She blamed it on the fact that people had just eaten so much that day, however I got the impression they were looking after regulars first as certain tables were being brought out extra Yorkshire’s and even one table who went up for seconds before we were allowed to go and get our food. Seems a shame as we had checked the reviews before booking the table and they all seemed positive, So I am assuming we have caught them on a very bad day.

Food portions were not very big, even my 10 and 12 year old were still hungry after their adult meals(chilli with nachos, guacamole and sour cream), lots of nachos, a small spoonful of chilli and no guacamole or sour cream but we didn't realise until they'd finished so it was too late to say anything, steak over cooked but still tasty. Lasagne wasn't as meaty and firm/stood up, as you would expect from a homemade one, it looked more like a microwave meal.Based on other reviews we expected it to be much nicer than it was. Extremely disappointed, it felt like fast food Indian at silver service prices, in complete contrast to our last visit two years ago, five stars on all counts.. So what were the issues? First the positives 1 We were served poppadoms whilst we perused the menu. 2. The starters were tasty. Now the negatives 1. Of the eight people waiting for a table, we were the only couple not to have been offered a drink 2. Our starters arrived before we had finished our poppadoms 3. Our main course arrived seconds after finishing our starters, but the bottle of wine we'd ordered had been forgotten about. We had to remind them 4. As soon as we'd finished our main course (and our first glass of wine from the bottle) , our dishes were cleared and the bill appeared without requesting it so we couldn't even order a digestive. 5 The bull included drinks we hadn't ordered or received. 6. We queried the bill and were informed that 'We don't serve coffee or dessert so we bring the bill as soon as we've cleared the table, but you're welcome to stay as long as you want" 6. A revised bill came which we paid and then left! The whole expensive experience took less than an hour. Not quite the special celebratory meal we'd anticipated. We left and found a quiet pub to have a digestive and relax.
